Today that's Embeth Davidtz, director of Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, now in theaters and expanding this weekend. Our B-Sides include Feast of July, The Gingerbread Man, Mansfield Park, and Bicentennial Man. We speak with Davidtz about her directorial debut, her incredibly diverse acting career, and adapting from the memoir by Alexandra Fuller. There's extended discussion of Robert Altman's direction of actors, the underrated qualities of Feast of July (a Merchant Ivory production!), and the ambitions of Bicentennial Man. There are reflections on working with B-Side friend and frequent guest Alessandro Nivola, the legacy of the Miss Honey character from Matilda, and the “trickery” involved in directing a child like Lexi Venter to an incredibly natural performance.

In today's episode, Embeth shares the extraordinary journey that shaped her voice as a storyteller—from her upbringing in apartheid-era South Africa to her unexpected entry into acting through a university drama program. She reflects on being discovered in a play by a William Morris agent, catching Spielberg's attention through a TV movie, and ultimately choosing to pause her career to raise a family. That pause led to a creative reawakening and a nine-year quest to adapt a memoir into her directorial debut, Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight. Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for a bonus podcast to discuss Bicentennial Man for its 25th anniversary. Bicentennial Man is a science fiction comedy-drama directed by Chris Columbus and written by Nicholas Kazan. It is based on a novelette by Isaac Asimov, as well as a novel by Asimov and Robert Silverberg. It opened in theaters on December 17, 1999. The film follows Andrew, an immortal robot (Robin Williams) who first serves the Martin family in a futuristic 2005. Mr. Martin (Sam Neill), who determines that Andrew has human emotions and interests, guides his development. Later, Andrew decides to take on more human attributes, including synthetic skin and organs, with the aid of inventor Rupert Burns (Oliver Platt). Other characters include Mrs. Martin (Wendy Crewson), the Martins' daughter Amanda (Hallie Kate Eisenberg, Embeth Davidtz), and Amanda's granddaughter (also Davidtz). Bicentennial Man garnered mixed-to-negative reviews, and it bombed at the box office. Robin Williams was nominated for Worst Actor at the Razzies, though the movie was nominated for Best Makeup at the Oscars. Aaron and Josh talk about the first time they saw Bicentennial Man, its plot, characters, and themes. They also mention its deceptive marketing campaign and how the film stands out in today's movie landscape. For more science fiction, you can listen to Aaron and Josh's Twilight Zone podcast with guest Randy Allain. Bicentennial Man is available on Prime Video

Tune in as Arthur's pal Kate comes back around to the program for a breakdown of Schindler's List, the 1993 Holocaust drama that covers the real-life tale of German industrialist and Nazi Party member Oskar Schindler as he ends up using his factory work to rescue over a thousand Jews. Considering the genocide that Israel has been committing against Palestine for the past nine months (or really, for decades), it's timely to go back through history and focus on a previous genocide. Frustrations with the sanitization of the dickweasel parts of Schindler's life, the movie's choice to draw parallels between Schindler and Nazi Amon Göth, and the hosts' favorite film composers comprise a few of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Schindler's List stars Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall, Jonathan Sagall, Embeth Davidtz, Ezra Dagan, Wojciech Klata, Bettina Kupfer, and Ludger Pistor. It's a cage match in a used car graveyard, with soul hunter Cyrus Kriticos taking on soul preserver Kalina Oretzia.  Lost amidst the metal is The Breaker, a murderous ghost Cyrus wishes to add to his collection.  Assisting Cyrus is Dennis, a medium whose ability to sense ghosts sends him into spasms of pain.  Kalina's only wish is to set souls free and let them roam the earth.  Cyrus succeeds in capturing Breaker, but loses his life in the process.  We cut to the home of Cyrus's nephew, math teacher Arthur Kriticos, his two children Bobby and Kathy, and their nanny, the sassy Maggie. They've got a visitor today, a lawyer, Ben Moss, representing Cyrus's estate. The news:  Cyrus is bequeathing his house to Arthur, who's spent the last few months mourning the death of his wife in a fire.  The house, it turns out, is a modern masterpiece of architecture, a glass structure with Latin etched on the walls, and walls that slide back and forth like a living organism.  Arthur's flattered, but… he can't pay for this.  He barely gets by as it is.  But Ben assures him, Cyrus has everything figured out.  All Arthur and the kids need to do is move in and get settled.  But once they start looking around, the Kriticos family realizes they're being watched, and the inhabitants of the basement are none too happy to be under new management. In this episode, per fan request, I retro review the 1995 movie Murder in the First starring Christian Slater, Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman. This movie is loosely based on the life of Henri Young, played by Bacon, who tried to escape Alcatraz and was thrown in the hole for over 3 years. He then ends up killing the inmate that ratted out their escape attempt and is put on trial. Slater plays Young's defense attorney who is unluckily assigned the case by the public defender. Oldman plays the sadistic assistant warden of Alcatraz who enjoys torturing Young. The movie goes over the trial and the subsequent verdict. If you haven't seen the movie, check out this review to see if it's worth changing that reality. If you've seen it, watch to find out what someone else thinks of it. Murder in the First also stars Embeth Davidtz, William H. Macy, R.
