It's been a while since Lakers fans could feel genuinely good about the team, but it's possible at least things are starting to turn. That was the feeling at least following Friday's 134-118 win over the Atlanta Hawks at the Crypt. It was their fourth straight victory, and one where you could see signs of what things could look like going forward, including... Continued dominance from LeBron James... Malik Monk continuing to burn things up as a scorer, in ways that can unlock lots of possibilities for L.A... Russell Westbrook taking better care of the ball (perhaps because always needed as a go-to scorer?)... Some (knock on wood) actual continuity, and as full a roster as the Lakers have had all year... Remember, Anthony Davis will return at some point. Is it truly safe to put out those positive vibes? To allow yourself as a fan to be vulnerable in what's been a Lucy-pulls-the-football type of year? Maybe, maybe not. But for one night at least, Lakers fans are going to sleep feeling optimistic. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LeBron James, Malik Monk, THT Lead Lakers Past Sacramento. Russell Westbrook Has Zero(!!!) Turnovers

Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

Style points, and the demand for them, have been outlawed on the Locked On Lakers podcast. Which is good, because Tuesday's win over Sacramento wasn't long on them. The Lakers didn't shoot the ball particularly well, and they didn't defend particularly well, either. But they didn't give the ball away to a subpar Sacramento team - only five turnovers total - that needs some favors to be competitive on any given night. Only one first half turnover for the team overall, and none at all from Russell Westbrook! Who didn't have one the entire game, the first time that's happened in a regular season since 2016. Then LeBron James (14 points) and Malik Monk (11 points) took over in the fourth quarter and put the game away, delivering L.A. its third straight win. Badly needed ones, too, over weak opponents chasing them in the standings. With that in mind, what should fans feel good about? Where should they worry? LeBron's play continues to marvel, and Monk is truly settling into a role where he can (should?) be more a focus offensively in late game situations than Westbrook. And Talen Horton-Tucker had his best game in a long, long while. Plus, Dwight Howard! Frank Vogel used him against a Kings squad that refused to play along with the Lakers' small lineups, and Howard's 20 minutes were incredibly impactful. The Lakers aren't anywhere near where they need to go, but are taking care of business for the time being. That's about as much as can be expected, night to night. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers beat Sacramento because they took care of the ball. Funny how that works. SEGMENT 2: Talen Horton-Tucker and Dwight Howard played big roles in the win. Are they going to be big pieces going forward? SEGMENT 3: Is Malik Monk a better fourth quarter option offensively than Westbrook? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Malik Monk Thrives as a Starter, Stanley Johnson Finds a Role, and the Lakers Officially Trade Rajon Rondo

The Lakers aren't just on a two-game winning streak. (It's depressing that a pair of consecutive wins qualifies as a shift, but that's the world we currently live in.) They're also getting closer to some interesting roster decisions regarding the futures of Avery Bradley, Stanley Johnson, Darren Collison and perhaps even someone like DeAndre Jordan along the roster fringes. That in large part played a role in the trading of Rajon Rondo, which became official on Monday. Rondo went to Cleveland in a three-way deal with the Knicks that set up the former Laker champ with more playing time on a surprisingly good team (indicative of the respect and affection he garnered with the purple and gold brass, and in particular, Frank Vogel). It also saved L.A. about $4M in luxury tax money, which could create flexibility down the road. In any event, the team will soon have to decide about Johnson and Collison's next deals (their 10-day contracts have expired) and whether to guarantee Bradley's contract before January 7th. Collison doesn't appear likely to be retained, but the Kamenetzkys would be shocked if Johnson and Bradley didn't remain on the team until season's end. Both have earned their spots (and in Bradley's case, mea culpas from the doubting K Bros), and are also cool stories in a season that's been largely depressing. It's always fun when easy to root for players succeed. Speaking of which, Malik Monk is another likable dude who's been absolutely killing it of late, and throughout the season in general. During Monday's practice, Monk shared some thoughts about this experience of betting on himself with the Lakers. Plus, he reveals the deep influence Nick Young played in his life! HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers have officially traded Rondo, which has some (positive) financial ramifications for the Lakers. SEGMENT 2: The futures of Bradley and Johnson. SEGMENT 3: Thoughts on Monk's season (and right arm). Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Strike up the band! After five straight losses, including a Christmas day loss so infuriating fans and media were relocating Russell Westbrook to Houston, Philadelphia or anywhere else the rumor mill deemed just feasible enough, the Lakers are finally off the schneid! Tuesday saw them beat a scrappy (if hapless) Houston Rockets squad 132-123, in a game that was too competitive for true comfort, but not without some interesting facets. To begin, interim head coach opted for a new starting lineup with Talen Horton-Tucker coming off the bench, Malik Monk and newbie Stanley Johnson at the forward sports, and LEBRON JAMES starting at center. (He also limited the rotation to just eight players, none of whom were true bigs.) The team in turn responded with their best offensive showing in a while. 20+ points from Monk and Carmelo Anthony. Triple-doubles for LeBron and Westbrook. And while Fizdale emphasized how this was not necessarily a permanent look moving forward, it's pretty clear we'll be seeing a lot of small ball in the Lakers' future. And until Anthony Davis returns, it appears a huge chunk of the center minutes will be played by LeBron, who used this game as yet another reminder of his exceptional versatility and basketball I.Q. To make this positional shift just 48 hours before turning 37 years old, nineteen seasons in, is legitimately pretty amazing. Next, it's LeBron's controversial (and very irresponsible) COVID/Spiderman meme, and took a listener email about Fizdale and Frank Vogel. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: A look at the win over Houston. SEGMENT 2: LeBron, your starting 5! SEGMENT 3: LeBron's meme, and a listener email. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Well, the good cheer generated by the win in Dallas was fun while it lasted. Less than 48 hours after Austin Reaves became a folk hero with a game-winner against the Mavericks, all hell has broken loose for the Lakers. Since then, the Lakers have lost games to the Timberwolves (Friday) and Bulls (Sunday), lost various teammates to the health and safety protocols (as of this recording, the unavailable include Reaves, Talen Horton-Tucker, Avery Bradley, Malik Monk, Dwight Howard, and Kent Bazemore), lost head coach Frank Vogel to the protocols... and most importantly, lost Anthony Davis to a sprained knee in Minnesota. That injury is expected to keep AD out at least one month, and who knows how much longer, given his history with ailments. So. What are the Lakers to do from here? To begin, continue to play as hard as they did during the loss in Chicago, which will at least give them a fighting chance against many teams. (They can also do things like stop turning the ball over and missing free throws, but that approach has been ignored all season.) With Trevor Ariza finally back, they can further lean into playing the small ball that best suits them (albeit without Davis, which is the best version of that look). They can perhaps utilize Isaiah Thomas, here on a 10-day hardship contract, and having put up double figures in both games since he arrived. Given how Davis' absence dramatically affects the Lakers' defensive upside, they're gonna have to score more. But really, they're just gonna have to hang on tight for dear life. Make no mistake. Davis' injury is a really big, bad deal, and there ain't much way around that fact. Host: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: The Kamenetzkys break down the loss to Chicago, and where the Lakers stand with the roster decimated. SEGMENT TWO: How can Thomas and Ariza help the team? Sports has been ravaged of late with various COVID-19 outbreaks, and the Lakers have unfortunately been no exception. Already down Talen Horton-Tucker, Malik Monk and Dwight Howard after positive tests, Thursday saw Russell Westbrook and Avery Bradley join them in the health and safety protocols. For those keeping score at home, that leaves the Lakers perilously short on backcourt players, and specifically, point guards. As such, they're bringing back a familiar face. Former All-NBA/All-Star/half-season Laker Isaiah Thomas will reportedly join the team on a 10-day deal. How much he'll actually be able to help remains to be seen (his previous comeback attempts have stalled out), but Thomas is easy to root for, regardless. In the meantime, COVID-19 doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon, which means the NBA will have to figure out the best way to handle this new wave. Should they briefly pause the season? Is that necessary, much less doable? Would it even make much of a difference? In any event, for however long this disrupts the Lakers, the onus becomes that much greater for Anthony Davis to take his game to another level. And finally, Austin Reaves' game-winner against Dallas is yet another sign of being ready for a key rotation role. Would that emergence make the Lakers more likely to trade THT? Brian thinks yes. Andy says no. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment 1: Westbrook and Bradley enter the protocols. Welcome back, Isaiah Thomas! Segment 2: What can/should the NBA do about this latest outbreak? Plus, the need for Anthony Davis to really step up. Segment 3: Austin Reaves should be cemented now in the rotation. Austin Reaves Is a Hero as the Lakers Knock off The Mavericks for a Third Straight Win

In a season filled with a string of disappointments, from bad losses to injuries to, now, what appears to be a (hopefully contained) Covid outbreak, the Lakers have been short on genuinely good and joyous stories. The exception there has been undrafted rookie Austin Reaves, who started off as a ready-made substitute to make Alex Caruso-themed jokes, before building into a player the Lakers might be able to use more than expected, before becoming someone the Lakers needed in their rotation. Wednesday in Dallas, Reaves became a damned hero, nailing the game winner in overtime to give the Lakers a third straight win. He hit five of six from downtown, overall, and Frank Vogel said after he couldn't pull Reaves off the floor because his defense was too good. In the short term, the Lakers will give Reaves a lot of floor time because they don't have many players (Malik Monk, Talen Horton-Tucker and Dwight Howard are in the Covid protocols and Trevor Ariza is still not ready) but long term for a team desperate for predictable two-way players, Reaves is quickly becoming indispensable. Meanwhile, it wasn't a great night for the Big Three. None were bad, none were great, and yet the Lakers won. That hasn't been the norm through most of the season. It's because they got just enough when it was needed most, and the team was willing to commit for four quarters (plus five minutes) defensively. Yes, the Mavs struggled on their own, but LA put in the work. Are they turning a corner, not necessarily in their performance (they were held under 100 points in regulation, so the offense has some work left to do. But they won anyway. LeBron talked about it after - what does this say about the group's evolution? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Austin Reaves, the hero the Lakers want AND the hero the Lakers need. This is a really cool story. SEGMENT 2: The Big Three weren't great, but the Lakers won anyway. That's meaningful for this team, given their track record this season. SEGMENT 3: LeBron talked about the team's identity. How are they recalibrating their sense of collective self? How important is that for turning things around in a meaningful way? The NBA is under siege with new COVID cases and the Lakers are the most recent team to be impacted as Talen Horton-Tucker, Dwight Howard, and Malik Monk all enter the NBA's health and safety protocols. As we all hope for low impact cases, quick recoveries, and containment of the virus, the basketball will (for now) go on. With that, Pete, Mike, and Darius react to the news by first discussing THT's recent play and how much losing him hurts, and then exploring how to replace him in the starting lineup and why they'd all choose Austin Reaves. Later, the guys discuss Kent Bazemore and whether he too should get a chance in the rotation as another wing option to help supplement Monk's absence. Malik Monk is proving to be exactly what the Lakers need as a backup guard who can change the game with his shot making and scoring ability. His 2nd half vs. the Kings, where he posted a +41 in the boxscore, attests to that. But, with LeBron James out, should Monk take on a bigger role and be moved to the starting lineup? If so, who should he replace? Is his defense good enough to play a bigger role? Does his positive on-court partnership with Russell Westbrook override whatever concerns exist? The Lakers have a couple days to kill between Tuesday's win over Sacramento, fueled by arguably their best half of the year, and Friday's tilt at Staples against the Clippers. Thankfully, LeBron James, stuck in the NBA's health and safety protocols, helped fill that space with a weird tweet about something fishy going on, featuring four different fish emoji. Didn't know there were that many to choose from! What was he getting at? Let's speculate! Meanwhile, the Lakers are clumped in with about seven other teams in the conference, with injuries and other unfortunate circumstances keeping the group close. So while things feel bad, and in many ways are, certain things are well within reach, even if L.A. doesn't turn it around right away. A first round home playoff series, for example. Silver lining in what's otherwise been a disappointing first quarter of the year. One increasingly bright spot: Malik Monk, who is adjusting to the expectations that are tied to title-level defense. Something he never had to worry about in Charlotte. Can he keep it up? Meanwhile, Talen Horton-Tucker has slumped big time since crushing it over his first three games returning to the lineup following thumb surgery. Did everyone expect too much? How badly do the Lakers need him to turn it around? How likely is it he'll be a steady two-way contributor by the end of the year? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Very little has gone according to plan for the Lakers this season, and that drumbeat continued Tuesday as the Lakers learned LeBron James would be forced into the league's Covid health and safety protocols. How long he'll be out depends on his symptoms and how fast he returns two negative tests, but at the least he'll miss Friday's game against the Clippers, and it would be prudent to plan on him being out for a couple more after. By now, the Lakers know what it's like to play without him, even if "knowing" doesn't mean "succeeding." They'll have to figure it out, and in the second half Tuesday, seemed to come up with a pretty good formula: Work really hard, and play real defense. After a terribly lazy first half against the Kings, Frank Vogel laid into the group, and it worked. The Lakers blew the doors of Sacramento over the final 24 minutes, turning a nine-point halftime deficit into a 25-point win. It was led by Anthony Davis and a strong second half from Russell Westbrook. Malik Monk was great, as was... Dwight Howard (!!!) who was not expecting to play (because Vogel told him he wouldn't) but was inserted into the game early for an ineffective DeAndre Jordan. Howard responded with his best game of the season, by a mile. Does that mean he's the primary "traditional big" going forward? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers were awful early against Sacramento, but responded to a halftime butt chewing from Vogel. In the end, they had a moment to feel good about themselves. No small thing for a group that has struggled. SEGMENT 2: Dwight Howard emerges. Does this game fundamentally change the way Vogel uses his center pairing? SEGMENT 3: LeBron in the protocols. How long might he be out? How does it hurt them if LBJ misses another 3-6 games? Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! But even if Locked On Lakers listeners didn't enjoy their dinner (or their families), they at least got to bask in the glow of Wednesday's strong Lakers victory over the Indiana Pacers. The 124-116 OT win capped the Lakers' roadie at 2-3, and featured some extremely interesting wrinkles. You had Anthony Davis missing the game due to the effects of the fever he fought through to play in New York, and hasn't yet shaken. You had strong supporting performances from Malik Monk and Wayne Ellington, along with 20 hard-fought points from Russell Westbrook, who didn't shoot particularly well, but got to the free throw line eleven times, hitting nine. You had the Lakers clawing back after being down for nearly the entire game. And then you had an incredible performance down the stretch from LeBron James, who scored 15 points during the last two minutes of regulation and overtime. He also spent a large chunk of the game playing small-ball center, a look that helped fuel the comeback, and unlock a strong version of the Lakers. Could this become part of the Lakers' identity moving forward? And finally, an interesting GQ interview with Dwight Howard, who talked Lakers, roses, snakes, and more! Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT ONE: LeBron's still got it, folks! SEGMENT TWO: Could LeBron at center play a role in helping a rudderless Lakers discover an identity? For a second straight game, the Lakers found themselves in overtime, and for the the second straight game they found a way to get a win. In this case, it was against a very good Miami Heat team, which made the absences of Rajon Rondo and Austin Reaves (on top of LeBron James, et al) even more of a potential obstacle to conquer. And the overall performance wasn't perfect. But it was also often quite good on both sides of the ball, and featured strong performances from Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Avery Bradley, and especially Malik Monk, who led the team in scoring with 27 points off the bench. After the win, Frank Vogel and several players noted how last Saturday's horrendous, disengaged loss to the Trail Blazers forced everyone to take a long look in the mirror and honestly assess some problems. A two-game winning streak doesn't mean everything's been fixed, and however great these Lakers can be, that level won't arrive until they have a full roster. What can be controlled until then, however, is their effort and attitudes. It was reassuring (not to mention, fun) to see a better version of both on display. In the meantime, these Lakers are now 3-0 in overtime. (Insert shrug emoji.) Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Segment one: The Kamenetzkys react to the win over the Heat, and in particular, how the Lakers have responded since Saturday's dispiriting loss to Portland, which felt potentially dangerous moving forward. So on the one hand, the Lakers got huge, mega-star performances from their three mega-stars. They won on Tuesday, running their record to a more tidy 5-3 after a very shaky start (in the win/loss column, at least). Russell Westbrook continues to look much more comfortable playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, seeming to settle into an attacking rhythm and turning the ball over a lot less (four or fewer in four of his last five games). On the other hand... The Lakers surrendered 70 (70!!!) points to the HOUSTON ROCKETS in the first half of Tuesday's win. The same Rockets who entered the game as the league's 28th most efficient offensive team. Or, put another way, the 3rd most inefficient. They were nearly victimized by two late side-out-of-bounds plays that left Houston a half second or so from going to the line with a chance to tie the game. The Rockets suck, and the Lakers only won by two. So there's that. Bottom line, the Lakers continue to drive their fans crazy, benefitting only local cardiologists and other dispensers of heart care. It's going to be a bumpy ride, people. And what will it look like as players get back off the injury list and onto the court? Is Malik Monk feeling some footsteps, whether from Austin Reaves or the impending return of Wayne Ellington and Kendrick Nunn (not to mention Talen Horton-Tucker)? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers win, and the Big Three is dominant. Let's talk about why... SEGMENT 2: LeBron says Westbrook is starting to "fit out," meaning he's playing like Russell Westbrook should play. Not trying to be someone he's not because others think that's what happens for the Lakers to thrive. What was the evidence on Tuesday? Is he turning a corner? SEGMENT 3: Austin Reaves is earning playing time, while Malik Monk seems to be bleeding it. Is it possible Monk is pressing because he knows those already-shrinking minutes could disappear once the roster is healthy? Is he attacking the time he's getting the right way? The last several days have not been kind to the Lakers. They've yet to win a preseason game. Trevor Ariza is out indefinitely after ankle surgery. Malik Monk is sidelined (albeit hopefully not for long) with a groin issue. And then came Monday's news that Talen Horton Tucker will require surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. It's not yet known how long the recovery will take, but it goes without saying that the Lakers will be without their emerging young player for a sizable period. Beyond the loss of THT's individual skills, the Lakers are extremely low on dudes who could conceivably (much less credibly) play small forward. It's basically now LeBron James, Kent Bazemore... and crickets. This was already a thin position on the roster, but Rob Pelinka seemed content to keep the fifteenth roster spot open, rather than add some depth, Now that feels damn near impossible to justify. Whether James Ennis, Wes Matthews or whoever, the Lakers need a live body who can credibly play 10-15 minutes at the spot. On the positive side, Tuesday's preseason game against the Warriors should finally feature the long-awaited preseason debuts of LeBron, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook as a trio. What will the Kamenetzkys be watching for as we finally see what this looks like? Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: What is the trickledown effect of Talen Horton-Horton out for the foreseeable future? Another day, another Lakers preseason loss. This time, it was 123-94 spanking at the hands of the Phoenix Suns, a continuation of a themes seen since training camp opened. The Lakers were shorthanded (Trevor Ariza, Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk are injured, while LeBron James opted not to suit up), and the play on both sides of the ball was, shall we say, erratic. And the final score reflected a general lack of cohesion. Not that there were no positives to speak of. Anthony Davis played his best game of the preseason, and seems to be rounding steadily into form, whether in terms of his offensive aggression or his defensive impact. Carmelo Anthony connected on five three-pointers. And Kent Bazemore was a quintessential "three-and-D" player (particularly the "D" part, where he was quite disruptive to Phoenix's schemes). As raggedy as the game was, those three stood out with positive contributions. On the other hand, Russell Westbrook was pretty brutal, whether as a scorer or running the offense. Only three of his twelve shots fell, and those nine missed shots were matched with nine turnovers. To be clear, a big issue appears to be timing and a lack of familiarity with so many new teammates, which is to be expected to some degree. If anything, Westbrook may have been periodically overcompensating trying to move the ball around. Still, he's been a turnover machine in two preseason appearances, and it's still not entirely clear what his role is when he's not in charge of the ball. Then again, it's not entirely clear the Lakers have been getting the most from this preseason, anyway. Hosts: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Kamenetzkys begin the show with the positive elements from the loss: AD. Melo. Bazemore (who seems to have cemented his case to start). SEGMENT 2: Game #2 for Russ? He's clearly trying hard to involve his teammates, but hooo boy... SEGMENT 3: Have the Lakers been getting everything out of the preseason they want? The Lakers kicked off their preseason Sunday, losing to the Brooklyn Nets )or people wearing Brooklyn Nets uniforms, at least), 123-97. Save a break-a-sweat first quarter from Anthony Davis, both teams ran without their stars, so it's hard to draw too much meaning from the result, but certain things did stick out: It was nice to see Davis back on the floor, even playing a little in a game where if he took the afternoon off nobody would have blinked. There's a lot riding on this season for Davis, and just choosing to get out on the floor and begin the process of getting back to the elite levels not reached last season is encouraging. Malik Monk (6-12, 15 points) showed some of the skills that attracted the Lakers to him, and left teammates surprised he was available at the minimum. If he provides the type of offense he did Sunday along with passable D, at the least he'll answer the question of where he fits into a crowded rotation. The answer would be decidedly "somewhere." Talen Horton-Tucker and Kendrick Nunn shared a backcourt. Were the different responsibilities each seemed to carry an indicator of how - and with whom- the coaching staff might deploy both? Dwight Howard is back, and to say the least, brought some Dwight Howard vibes. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose, Anthony Davis plays... did he make an impression? And what about Malik Monk? He certainly got Lakers Twitter going. SEGMENT 2: More on Monk. How could something that builds on his career performance last season impact the upside for the team? And what did we see from THT and Nunn that might be a clue for where the coaching staff is leaning in terms of responsibilities, roles and floor combinations? SEGMENT 3: Dwight Howard is back, and he's bringing that Dwight Howard vibe once again. Is that a good thing? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
