It's Hanukkah, friends! And in an attempt to build a human menorah, host Rachel Belle invited Mark Oppenheimer, Stephanie Butnick and Liel Leibovitz into the studio, hosts of the world's leading Jewish podcast, Unorthodox! (We are still five "candles" short, if you know anyone). Together, we attempt to tackle the most important Jewish food topics of our time: is it more Jewish to wrap your leftovers in tin foil or plastic wrap? Is it a good idea to blend schnitzel and Israeli salad into a savory smoothie? And the most shocking topic of all: are bagels even a Jewish food anymore? Food writer and cookbook author, Leah Koenig joins the show to share the history of bagels, cream cheese and lox in America. And we revisit the biggest bagel scandal of 2019, the tweet that rocked the nation: Bagelgate! A couple of St Louis food writers weigh in on the St Louis tradition of "bread slicing" bagels. All this and, of course, the last meal reveals of Mark, Stephanie and Liel! Buy Mark, Liel & Stephanie’s new book, The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia!
It's Hanukkah, so naturally, we dedicated this ep to--hot take--one of the best possible iterations of potatoes: the latke. We filled ourselves with two versions of extremely delectable potato pancakes (one by Mark Bittman of the NYT, and one by our girl Ina) and a large quantity of apple sauce and sour cream (because we have souls in our bodies and brains in our heads), and we'll just say that the only way to f this up is to not make latkes at all. Go now! Hurry! Happy holidays!
Ho ho ho, and happy birthday! It's Hanukkah-time in Gift City, so stock up for Administrative Professionals' Day! What? You didn't get the biggest teddy bear on the planet for your loved on on Valentine's Day? What kind of monster are you?! You better be ready for deep mattress price reductions come Labor Day. Shop, shop, shop...why, just since beginning to type this, marketers have created three new holidays that come with an expectation of gift-giving. Guess what the Gorillamen are talking about this week? It's our gift to you... * * * We begin with the first gifts we ever received...and the first gifts we ever gave. After that, find out if we like receiving gifts -- and if we're good at giving gifts. We spend a moment wondering if there are too many gift-giving holidays in the U.S. before discussing the go-to gifts or methods we use when having to buy gifts for people we don't know very well. And then we talk about all this: What’s the best gift you’ve ever gotten? The most useful? What’s the best gift you’ve ever given someone? The worst you’ve received? The worst you’ve given?
Wax and oil, oil and wax! When the wax and oil questions start rolling in, it can only mean one thing: It's Hanukkah! In this episode, Jolie answers questions about getting wax off a menorah and delicate textiles, and talks about ways to minimize the smells caused by frying latkes in the home, or transporting them in a handbag. Yes, you read that right. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
