A row has been brewing for months in the southern Indian state of Karnataka after dozens of Muslim students were barred by authorities from entering colleges because they were wearing the hijab.  Widespread protests and counter protests by students attending local colleges and pre-universities have erupted across the southern coastal state, raising tensions in the communally sensitive region. Female Muslim students have lobbied for days outside the gates of their colleges, demanding the administration let them attend classes wearing the hijab.  Their protests have been met by counter-demonstrations by students linked to right-wing Hindu groups. They wear saffron scarves - a colour used by hardline nationalists - and march in the streets chanting "Jai Shri Ram", a traditional Hindu salutation that has in recent years become a war cry. In this week's Beyond the Headlines, Nilanjana Gupta looks at why the hijab is the source of more division than ever in India.

This week, host Basant Kumar is joined by Shivangi Saxena and Ashwine Kumar Singh of Newslaundry.Shivangi talks about her report on an August 8 gathering at Delhi's Jantar Mantar where the participants called for the wanton killing of Muslims in India. She recalls speaking with Uttam Upadhyay, one of those shouting for murder. “The Muslim community is a danger to the Hindu dharma,” Shivangi says Uttam told her. “For Hinduism to continue Islam needs to be eradicated. And in order to eradicate Islam we need to boycott the Muslims financially.” She reflects on how scary it was to report in such an environment and how she had to keep her personal feelings in check to report. She was shocked, Shivangi says, after learning that the mob had cornered another reporter, Anmol Preetam, and demanded that he shout the slogan “Jai Shri Ram”.Ashwine and Basant discuss their story about how some people burst firecrackers near Indian hockey player Vandana Katariya's family home in Uttarakhand after her team had failed to earn a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. They found that the incident was likely rooted in personal animus and casteism as sections of the media had reported, Basant says. “We did not meet anyone who told us casteist comments were made, though some speculated that the bursting of firecrackers was done out of jealousy,” adds Ashwine.They also talk about the tax raids on Dainik Bhaskar and the Hindi paper's journalism, how the Delhi police have acted in the last two years, and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have. Two back-to-back protests in Delhi informed by strong anti-Muslim sentiments are triggering fresh concerns about the weakened state of India's secular fabric. The first protest took place in Dwarka Sector 22, where the construction of a Hajj House for Muslim pilgrims is set to take place. A large group of residents from the neighbourhood area and Khaps from nearby villages had gathered at the site of the prospective Hajj House, on 6 August, chanting "Jai Shri Ram" and "Hindu Ekta" to oppose its construction. While some protesters said they feared that the Hajj House itself would become "another Tablighi Jamaat", some other claimed that constructing the Hajj House would lead to clashes, riots, and a law-and-order problem.  But the second and doubly concerning rally took place in the heart of Delhi — at Jantar Mantar, just two days after the Dwarka gathering, where in a protest against "colonial era laws", some especially violent and inflammatory slogans were raised against the Muslim community.  Purported video clips from the gathering showed protestors raising slogans that threaten to kill Muslims, which have been drawing massive outrage over the past few days.  This led the police to take action two days after the slogans were raised and arrest five people, including a Supreme Court lawyer and former Delhi BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay who had organised the event.
