On September 13th of last year 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was visiting Tehran with her family, having traveled from Irans' Kurdish region. While in Tehran she was stopped by Iran's morality police for improperly wearing her hijab, or head covering. Three days after her arrest she was dead. In the days, weeks, and months following her death Iran has seen nationwide protests, and while protests are not a particularly new thing in Iran, what's unprecedented about these protests are the calls not simply for reforms but for the toppling of Iran's theocratic regime, a regime that has been in power since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. Today's episode provides an update on the protests. Last month also saw another seismic event in Iranian, and Middle East politics. After decades of saber rattling, proxy wars, and general hostility, China helped to negotiate the reestablishment of diplomatic ties between The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. What this means for the two regional super powers, for those within their spheres of influence, and for geopolitics will be the focus of the second half of our show. Dr. Assal Rad received her PhD in Middle Eastern History from the University of California, Irvine in 2018. Her PhD research focused on Modern Iran, with an emphasis on national identity formation, and identity in post-revolutionary Iran. She's also author of “The State of Resistance: Politics, Culture, and Identity in Modern Iran. Dr. Pouya Alimagham is a historian of the modern Middle East at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His areas of expertise range from revolutionary movements, Political Islam and post-Islamism, terrorism, US foreign policy, and contemporary politics. He's also the author of “Contesting the Iranian Revolution: The Green Uprisings" (Cambridge University Press).

It took Salimata Sylla three hours to get to the away fixture she was due to play with her basketball team mates from the Parisian suburb of Aubervilliers. But it was only a few minutes before the match started that she learned she was going to sit the game out on the bench. Despite playing for more than 10 years in the French Championship, the federation that controls her sport decided to apply the rule that forbids female basketball players from wearing the hijab. Her coach describes her as the backbone of the team and an ambassador for the sport. She has been a face of basketball for many big brands on social media. And the hijab she wears is sold by mainstream sportswear manufacturers. Salimata's ban is the latest in country where the right to wear a hijab has long divided opinion. But in her case, it raises an interesting dilemma for France. While domestic sporting federations enforce their ban on the hijab, their international counterparts have no such ban in place. So what will happen, Salimata wonders, when the Olympics come to Paris next year? Reporter Claire Jones goes to Paris to meet Salimata to find out how she can resolve her wish to express her Muslim faith by wearing a hijab with her desire to play the sport she loves. Presenter: Claire Jones Producer: Helen Lee and Rob Cave Production co-ordinator: Mica Nepomuceno

Although news about Iran doesn't deluge our headlines any longer, as it did the days and weeks after Ms. Mahsa Amini's murder, we continue to hear and see trickles of news about Iran and Iranians. And it's a good time to talk about it, because it's the Persian New Year on March 20th - just 3 days from now. In this episode, my guest, Dr. Khodadad Rezakhani of Leiden University, takes us from the Black Sea to the Iranian plateau to talk about Persians & Iranians. Are these terms interchangeable? He also tells us which one is more appropriate: the Persian or Iranian New Year? From there we talk about Eranshahr, and why that important term developed during the Sasanian Empire as opposed to earlier empires, namely the Achaemenid and Parthians. Dr. Rezakhani describes the importance of the Sasanian Empire in history, and how this mighty empire pummeled the Byzantine Roman Empire and then, suddenly, fell to the Arabs and Islamization of Iran. Throughout our conversation, he debunks many myths about Iran and world history. To learn more about Dr. Rezakhani, you can visit his academic homepage. On World Hijab Day, Business Daily's Emb Hashmi explores the enormous market in modest fashion and in particular the hijab. We meet four women who wear the hijab in their own way and also make a living out of modelling, making and selling hijabs. Dr Sana Askary, founder of Yumin Hijab tells Emb that when she decided to wear the hijab a few years ago she couldn't find one she could wear comfortably so she designed her own and now runs a hijab business which she's hoping to expand this year. Shazrina Azman aka Mizz Nina was an award winning Malaysian singer songwriter but a chance moment on Hajj pilgrimage made her realise she wanted to dress more modestly. Sharzina adapted her already very successful fashion business to more modest clothing designs and left her free hair look behind to wear the hijab. Lalla Mariah al-Idrissi is a model and filmmaker and tells us she's considered a model with hijab she's considered a model with hijab because the hijab is such a significant part of her appearance and Eniya Rana a modest fashion influencer based in London and married mother of 5 describes how she creates very relatable online content for a growing global female audience.
