Ian Bremmer sits down with Jesuit priest and bestselling author Father James Martin to discuss the unprecedented election of Pope Leo XIV—the first-ever (North) American Pope—and what his leadership could mean for the Catholic Church, American politics, and a divided, secular world. Known for his humility and spiritual depth, Pope Leo has a chance to bridge widening rifts within the Church. “There's a lot of division and anger,” Martin says, “but Pope Leo has the opportunity to build bridges between progressives and traditionalists.”Martin highlights the Pope's early statements on war and migration as signs that his moral leadership will extend beyond Church walls, rooted in a clear Gospel mandate: “When Jesus says, ‘When you welcome the stranger, you welcome me,' that's pretty clear.”The conversation also touches on Martin's advocacy for LGBTQ Catholics, especially the trans community, who he says are “being treated like dirt,” and the enduring legacy of Pope Francis, whose compassion and global engagement still echo in the Vatican. “Francis showed us that the Church is a field hospital,” Martin says.Host: Ian Bremmer Guest: Father James Martin Subscribe to the GZERO World with Ian Bremmer Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred podcast platform, to receive new episodes as soon as they're published.

Ghosts and Things: The Material Culture of Nineteenth-Century Spiritualism (Cornell University Press, 2025) by Dr. Aviva Briefel argues that Victorians turned to the dead to understand the material culture of their present. With the rise of spiritualism in Britain in the early 1850s, séances invited participants to contact ghosts using material things, from ordinary household furniture to specialized technologies invented to register the presence of spirits. In its supernatural object lessons, Victorian spiritualism was not just a mystical movement centered on the dead but also a practical resource for learning how to negotiate the uncanniness of life under capitalism. Dr. Briefel explores how spiritualism compelled séance participants to speculate on the manufacture of spectral clothing; ponder the hidden histories and energies of parlor furniture; confront the humiliations of consumerism as summoned spirits pelted them with exotic fruits; and comprehend modes of mechanical reproduction, like photography and electrotyping, that had the power to shape identities. Dr. Briefel argues that spiritualist practices and the objects they employed offered both believers and skeptics unexpected frameworks for grappling with the often-invisible forces of labor, consumption, exploitation, and exchange that haunted their everyday lives. Ghosts and Things reveals how spiritualism's explorations of the borderland between life and death, matter and spirit, produced a strange and seductive combination of wonder and discomfort that allowed participants to experience the possibilities and precarities of industrial modernity in novel ways. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Moses Hull was a silver tongued Adventist evangelist who gave up his faith in favor of dialoging with the dead. His fall from grace has become a fearful narrative deployed by Adventists to keep away from slippery slopes that might lead to Spiritualism. But do we have the whole story? In this episode Seth invites Matthew Lucio, Greg Howell, and Shawn Brace to explore one of Adventism's cautionary tales related to talking with the dead. "Guard your consciousness because our consciousness is our most most precious thing that we have."Welcome to the grand finale of the Bewitched series. Robyn and I wrap up this intense journey, reflecting on lessons learned and closing the book. We discuss the ethical responsibility we felt and the personal cost of sharing these stories.I share 11 patterns of manipulation I tracked across guest stories, explaining how they relate to childhood relational trauma and exploiting "soft spots", like creating trauma bonds and gaslighting. Robyn adds personality insights, contrasting the Dark Tetrad with the Light Triad. We touch on how traits like openness and agreeableness, combined with trauma, may make accomplished, intuitive women susceptible. Discernment is crucial. We also address the question of why Betty's identity was not revealed. We're excited to continue podcasting, collaborating on new content focusing on ethics, integrity, and standards in the healing and spiritual leadership space. We want to thank all of the women who wanted to come forward with their stories and experiences. And also, everyone who showed their support, caring and interest in the series. Ep 47: MEDIUM Philosophy Andy Byng is an evidential medium, teacher, and Spiritualist Reverend. Andy truly inspires Jane and Sarah in this episode as he shares the history, philosophy, and theology of Spiritualism and mediumship. This conversation delves into the nuances of spirit communication, the importance of self-development in mediumship, and the role of philosophy in today's society. And how mediumship is really a natural part of being human! Andy's profound journey into mediumship displays the importance of storytelling in spirit communication. He discusses his early experiences, the awakening of his mediumistic abilities, and the personal development that shaped his understanding of spirit relationships. The conversation explores the natural narrative of life and how it intertwines with the messages from the spirit world, highlighting the significance of self-discovery in the journey of becoming a medium. He shares the importance of viewing the spirit world as a partnership rather than a hierarchy, advocating for a rational approach to mediumship that operates within natural laws. The discussion explores the role of mediumship in today's society, particularly in light of recent global challenges, and highlights the significance of community and personal purpose in spiritual growth. Takeaways The storytelling aspect of mediumship is essential. Every spirit communicator has a need to establish their identity. Mediumship is a natural expression of communication with the spirit world. Personal development is crucial for uncovering mediumistic abilities. Life experiences create a narrative that aids in spirit communication. Awakening to one's mediumship often comes from self-discovery. Mediumship should be approached with an open heart and mind. The journey of self-discovery unfolds organically over time. Building a relationship with the spirit world is about friendship, not worship. Spiritualism teaches that we are all equals, with God within us. Mediumship should be presented rationally, operating within natural laws. Mediumship provides evidence of survival and inspires personal exploration. Mediumship can remind us of our spiritual nature amidst physical struggles. Tension can hinder mediumship effectiveness. Every experience can serve a spiritual purpose. Sound Bites "Storytelling is a big part of my teaching." "Life creates a narrative all by itself." "Every experience can be spiritual." Many of us have plenty of experiences with math, especially when we were younger. Perhaps some of your memories of what math was like for you in school are unpleasant, to say the least. Yet there are many people who are passionate about mathematics, especially Christians who see mathematics as the God-given language by which we can better understand not only the physical world around us, but God Himself. Naturalism has no real answers for why mathematics is so useful and even beautiful and practical not only for doing science, but in our everyday lives. And how are beauty and mathematics linked? What do beauty and math tell us about God Himself? This week we wrap up our conversation with youth leader, math professor, friend of Watchman Fellowship and Christian apologist Paige Lehrmann. Paige will share with us her passion about mathematics, beauty, and how we can incorporate them in our defense for the hope that is in us (1 Peter 3:15). Paige Lehrmann is the Director of Student Ministries at St. Andrew's Community Church in Oklahoma City and a student at Dallas Theological Seminary. She earned her B.A. in Philosophy and Mathematics from Oklahoma Baptist University, where she completed an interdisciplinary thesis on the Trinity. Paige went on to pursue graduate studies in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma and has taught as an adjunct professor at Mid-America Christian University. She has presented at apologetics conferences on topics such as the Trinity, the divinity of Christ, and theistic arguments from beauty. Through her work, she hopes to help others think deeply about faith, truth, and the beauty of the Gospel. You may contact Paige via email at Paige.lehrmann@gmail.com. "I had no sexual energy. I couldn't feel anything. That's when I knew—we were siphoned."In this final and explosive interview of the Bewitched series, Baljit Rayat steps forward with a harrowing story that spans nearly two decades. As the first student to ever learn the Akashic Records from Betty, Baljit didn't just witness the rise of a spiritual leader—she lived through the full descent into chaos, control, and cult-like manipulation. What began in 2006 as a path of spiritual awakening and mentorship slowly evolved into a twisted entanglement of gaslighting, psychosis, and psychic entrapment. Baljit recounts the signs she missed, the energy shifts she ignored, and the moments when her body began showing symptoms—weight gain, lost libido, mental fog—of being psychically infiltrated. But nothing prepared her for the Santa Fe retreat, where psychodrama erupted, euphoria blurred into confusion, and something darker came through under the guise of sacred ritual. From being telepathically pressured to rejoin programs, Baljit unveils how Betty's tactics became coercive, paranoid, and surreal. She opens up about the soul-crushing aftermath, the moment she finally blocked Betty, and the freedom that followed. This episode is about reclaiming your energy, breaking the spell, and waking up to the truth.TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS(00:00) Intro(00:52) In Today's Episode...Baljit Rayat and the Final Chapter(02:11) Upcoming Episode: 11 Patterns of Manipulation and Personality Profiling(03:32) The Metamorphosis(05:02) Welcoming Baljit's Unique Perspective(07:10) Baljit's First Steps with Betty and Initial Red Flags(12:28) The Shift and The Pandemic Impact(17:51) Spiritual Psychosis and The Santa Fe Retreat(24:10) The Blue Lotus Tea and Mind Games(31:14) The Santa Fe Aftermath - Bye Betty, You're Hijacked(36:59) Croatia and The Male Entity(46:49) Cult-Like Behavior(52:57) Unveiling Hidden Transformations, Psychic Attacks, and Targeting(55:26) The Shift in Energy - Who's Above Betty?(58:06) Trauma Bonding, Infiltration, and Revelations(01:05:21) Psychological and Energetic Insights(01:07:47) The San Diego Trauma Reveal(01:16:28) Galactic Interference - The Portal is Open(01:23:49) Who Made You, Betty?(01:27:30) Betty's Training System Exposed(01:39:11) Where Do We Go From Here?**WAYS TO ENTER MY WORLD** When you leave a review of the podcast, send us a screenshot and we'll send you a $250 credit, you can apply to anything else in my world. "I love you, so I'm going to beat you… then tell you I love you again."That's how Brenda describes the psychological undertow that pulled her into—and kept her in—Betty's web for nearly a decade. In this piercing episode of the Bewitched series, Brenda Reiss joins us to unpack her long, layered experience with Betty, dating all the way back to 2014. What started as a business mentorship for a corporate escapee turned into an eerily familiar cycle of emotional manipulation, shame-laced power plays, and spiritual gaslighting.Brenda takes us through every twist: the way Betty shamed clients into MLM schemes under the guise of financial empowerment, the bizarre telepathic “nudges” that seemed to lure her back whenever she tried to walk away, and the chaos of energetically loaded retreats where nothing was clear, yet everything felt controlling. This episode hits hard with real-life cult tactics masquerading as coaching: isolating clients, confusing group dynamics, trauma bonding masked as healing, and the ever-slippery line between mentor and manipulator.Brenda's story is a masterclass in the slow, subtle erosion of personal power—and her emergence from that fog is both a cautionary tale and a powerful reclamation of sovereignty.TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS(00:00) Intro(00:53) In Today's Episode...Brenda Reiss(02:38) Shame is At The Bottom of The Sundae(06:47) Benefits of The Metamorphosis(09:22) Brenda's Beginning with Betty: The Pull and The Shame(18:02) Childhood Trauma: Advantage Betty. What do you do when the mentor you trusted becomes the monster you never saw coming?Today we have Elizabeth Purvis on the show. Elizabeth thought she had found her match: a magnetic spiritual leader with a bold vision, unshakeable confidence, and a promise to unlock the deepest realms of transformation and magic. But behind the veil of light and leadership, something darker simmered. In this gripping episode, Elizabeth recounts her long and complex relationship with Betty, tracing it from fascination to disillusionment—and ultimately, reclamation.Drawn in by Betty's charisma and promise of elevated consciousness, spiritual mastery, and access to powerful circles, Elizabeth entered with eyes wide open. What she didn't expect was how quickly admiration would blur into confusion, betrayal, and manipulation. We follow Elizabeth's path through cognitive dissonance, spiritual gaslighting, and professional entanglement—including being hired by Betty herself. As the cracks widened, Elizabeth faced the truth: this wasn't a sacred mentorship. Today we take a peek at the interesting life of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the man who invented the world's most famous and influential literary detective, Sherlock Holmes. However, Doyle was never really that interested in the fictional creation that made him famous. He was very interested, though, in spiritualism, and took part in hundreds of seances and wrote dozens of books, pamphlets, and newspaper articles attesting to a belief he saw as indisputable fact: that the dead surround us and we can speak with them. The Morris Pratt Institute was built to study the spirit world—but in Whitewater, some believe it opened doors that were never meant to be unlocked.IN THIS EPISODE: Whitewater legend says that the bizarre experiments conducted at the Morris Pratt Institute of Spiritualism in Wisconsin, to communicate with the dead, have left the town cursed by witches and haunted by restless spirits. It's no wonder it has garnered the nickname of “Second Salem.” (Whitewater: The Second Salem) *** The Wild West had many drifters with troubled pasts. One found himself at the heart of one of the most infamous crimes in American history. Ben Kuhl went from horse theft, to stagecoach robbery, to murder – from notoriety to infamy – all in pursuit of elusive riches. Finally arrested and convicted due to a bloody handprint (The Last Stagecoach Robbery) *** Fred West was just a regular boy, or so it seemed. But behind closed doors, in reality, he was becoming evil incarnate. And upon meeting his future wife Rose, it only expanded his predatory predilections. Fred and Rose descended from petty crimes to unspeakable horrors of rape and murder – even of the most young and innocent. From their "House of Horrors" the depths of their depravity was acted out — hidden from site. But as the walls closed in and the truth emerged, the true horror of their crimes was laid bare. Danielle Aykroyd is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who performs under the name Vera Sola. Sometimes called the "lost love child of Leonard Cohen and Nancy Sinatra," Vera Sola's smoky vocalization and searing, soaring songs have a cinematic aspect to them, and would feel equally at home in a David Lynch film or a prairie full of phantoms. A trained poet, her lyrics are twisting and imagistic, marked alternatively by restrained mystery and a resplendent, wild-eyed rage. Her 2018 debut LP, Shades, which she plays every instrument on, is a study in shadowy Americana and mesmeric incantation. Her sophomore album of 2024, Peacemaker, is a more expansive extravaganza with lush orchestration, dark dreamscapes, and tales of vengeance, heartache, and haunting. Vera Sola's new EP, Ghostmaker is a pared-down resurrection of Peacemaker tracks, and features a brand new song, “The Ghostmaster's Daughter.”On this episode, Danielle discusses howspirits guide her music, her relationship to ghosts, and the liberating power of finding her voice.Pam also talks about the feminist history of Spiritualism, and answers a listener question about a precarious prediction. Vera Sola's songs featured in the audio version of this podcast episode are as follows:“Circles” from Shades“Bad Idea” from Peacemaker“The Ghostmaster's Daughter” from Ghostmaker“Blood Bond” from Peacemaker“Instrument of War” from PeacemakerCheck out the video of this episode over on YouTube (and please like and subscribe to the channel while you're at it!)Our sponsors for this episode are Mithras Candle, BetterHelp, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, and Dear Antigone. We also have print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here, and all sorts of other bewitching goodies available in the Witch Wave shop. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to detailed show notes, bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more!
