This week we tell the strange and little-known story of the Mountain Cove Community, a spiritualist commune founded in the mountains of what's now West Virginia in the early 1850s.Led by Reverends Thomas Lake Harris and James L. Scott, the group believed they could communicate with spirits, build a new Eden in Appalachia, and create a perfect society apart from the corruption of the outside world. But as power, prophecy, and control grew inside the community, Mountain Cove began to unravel. If you enjoy Appalachian history and folklore, be sure to subscribe to the Stories podcast. Thanks for listening!

This week I'm talking to Cyrus Kirkpatrick about his book 'The Afterlife and Beyond: An Examination of Life After Death by an Out-of-Body Explorer'. If the afterlife is real, what does that mean for our lives? For society? In a second feature book by afterlife and supernatural writer Cyrus Kirkpatrick, these questions are poised as the consequences of an afterlife are explored in relation to subjects from cryogenics to artificial intelligence and the origins of life. In addition, objective evidence for the afterlife is scrutinized, with detailed out-of-body experiences and trips through other realms reported, including helpful information about how we can connect ourselves to other dimensions and reunite with loved ones. Bio Cyrus Kirkpatrick released Understanding Life After Death in 2015 followed by The Afterlife and Beyond in 2018. Both of these books investigated realities of the Spiritualism movement, scientific investigations into survival of consciousness. During this time, Cyrus has appeared as a speaker for the Afterlife Research Education Institute, and numerous media appearances. This also included the founding of the Afterlife Topics and Metaphysics YouTube and Facebook communities. Cyrus's focus shifted primarily into direct, clairaudient communications with “worlds beyond Earth”, including verifiable or cross corresponding telepathic sessions that relate to often “grand sagas” that exist beyond our one planet, and how many subjects link together, including life after death often misidentified as a spirit world but is actually a higher reality, magical cosmos that is both physical and endlessly ancient. This discovery led to the forthcoming release of the book The Cosmic Shift of Mankind which documents many communications with important characters from Nikola Tesla to forces of the higher multiverse continuously spreading a message about a ‘5th density or ‘5d Shift' that will bring Planet Earth into the realities beyond our own. That includes entire worlds which we would deem as our afterlife realities that are ‘extraordinary' versions of our planet and culture. https://www.amazon.com/Afterlife-Beyond-Examination-Out-Body-ebook/dp/B07FRKJ78R https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlifeMy book 'Verified Near Death Experiences' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Something that will change and appear to be very, very alive. Or at least, be very sentient despite being dead or unrecognizable as far as life as we know it. Then, a tale about a family all experiencing things in a Colombian apartment, unaware of each others encounters. Next up, a call back to an episode from 2020 about Sue Hardy- kind of. The Fox Sisters, Hydesville, and the birth of modern Spiritualism began with something terrifyingly simple: a knock in the dark.In 1848 Hydesville, New York, two young sisters, Maggie and Kate Fox, claimed they could communicate with a mysterious spirit inside their family farmhouse. What started as eerie nighttime rappings soon became a national obsession, drawing neighbors, skeptics, journalists, believers, and grieving families desperate for proof that death was not the end. The phenomenon helped ignite one of the most influential supernatural movements in American history: Spiritualism. But was it a true haunting… or one of the most consequential paranormal hoaxes ever performed?Inside this episode:The Hydesville Rappings: How strange knocks in a farmhouse became a chilling code from “the dead.”Maggie and Kate Fox: Two young girls caught between childhood mischief, family pressure, celebrity, and exploitation.Leah Fox and the Spiritualist Machine: How the sisters' older sibling helped transform a local haunting into a public spectacle.Seances, Grief, and Belief: Why 19th-century America was so ready to believe the dead could answer. The 1888 Confession: Maggie Fox's shocking public admission that the spirit rappings were produced by physical tricks. The Bones in the Wall: The strange 1904 discovery that seemed to vindicate the legend… until the certainty began to fall apart. This is not just a ghost story. It is a story about grief, faith, fraud, family, and the terrible human hunger to hear one more message from someone we have lost. Whether the Fox Sisters were frauds, victims, performers, believers, or all of those things at once, their story changed the way America imagined the dead. From a cold farmhouse in Hydesville, New York, to packed lecture halls and séance parlors, the Fox Sisters helped build a movement on one promise: ask the dead a question, and they might answer. We're telling that story tonight.

What if the voices we hear in modern ghost hunts… were already being heard long before recording devices even existed? In this unsettling episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro explore the eerie origins of Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)—decades before microphones, tape recorders, or digital audio ever entered the picture. During the height of 19th-century Spiritualism, inventors and experimenters used crude devices—vibrating wires, acoustic horns, and chemically treated plates—in an attempt to capture something impossible: the voices of the dead. And according to their journals… they may have succeeded. Across multiple accounts spanning countries and decades, early researchers reported hearing faint but structured responses—names repeated, urgent pleas, and chilling phrases like “Help me,” “I am lost,” and “Don't leave.” These weren't dramatic or theatrical. They were flat, mechanical… and disturbingly consistent. Even more unsettling? Some messages suggested confusion—voices that didn't seem to realize they were dead at all. So what does it mean that modern EVP recordings—captured with advanced technology—report the same exact types of messages? Is this proof of something trying to reach us across time? Or has the human brain been playing the same trick on us for over 150 years? Then, in a sharp turn from paranormal to profoundly bizarre, the episode dives into one of medicine's strangest real experiments: milk transfusions. In the mid-1800s, desperate doctors battling deadly diseases like cholera attempted to replace lost blood… with milk injected directly into the veins. Yes. Milk. At first, some patients appeared to improve—just enough to give doctors hope. But what followed was often catastrophic: chills, labored breathing, shock, and death. Without understanding blood types or human biology, physicians clung to the idea far longer than they should have—until science finally caught up and revealed just how wrong they were. This episode blends eerie historical accounts with jaw-dropping medical missteps, reminding us that the line between science and the unknown has always been thinner than we think. And sometimes… dangerously so.

Jim welcomes author Brad Ricca to explore the surprising intersection of Harry Houdini, Abraham Lincoln, and the explosive rise of spiritualism in America. Brad paints a vivid portrait of Houdini not just as a master illusionist, but as a relentless crusader determined to expose mediums he believed were exploiting grief for profit. From dramatic jail escapes to deeply personal attempts to contact his late mother, Houdini's journey reveals a man caught between skepticism and a yearning to believe. The discussion also dives into the eerie cultural backdrop of the early 20th century, where séances, war-time loss, and political mythmaking collided. Ricca unpacks how Lincoln's legacy became entangled in spiritualist claims, fueling Houdini's mission and shaping a broader battle over truth, belief, and deception. Along the way, the episode touches on chilling moments surrounding Houdini's death, the enduring mystery of his final days, and the lasting question that still lingers today: where does illusion end and something else begin? The Lead Masks Case is one of the strangest unsolved mysteries in true crime history: two Brazilian electronics technicians, found dead on a hillside in Niterói, Brazil, wearing homemade lead eye masks, with a cryptic note instructing them to take capsules, await a signal, and use the mask afterward. In this episode of Terrifying & True, we dig into the eerie facts, the failed investigation, the missing cause of death, and the theories that have kept this bizarre case alive for decades—from UFO encounters and occult experiments to poison, fraud, and murder. This is the kind of case that feels too strange to be real: raincoats in the brush, missing money, removed watches, a note that reads like a ritual checklist, and no clear answer for what killed Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz. The deeper you go, the weirder it gets. If you love unsolved mysteries, paranormal true crime, UFO cases, bizarre deaths, Brazilian mysteries, and strange historical cases, this episode is built to pull you all the way in. Inside this episode:The 1966 deaths of two technicians on Morro do VintémThe infamous lead masks and the chilling noteCapsules, signals, and “protect metals”Witness claims, missing money, and possible companionsThe autopsy delay that doomed the caseWhy the official cause of death remains unknownTheories involving UFOs, spiritualism, poison, and homicideIf you've ever been fascinated by cases where the evidence seems to point everywhere and nowhere at once, The Lead Masks Case is an all-timer. The Fox sisters began their time as famous mediums by hearing simple knocking sounds in their childhood bedroom.; supposed signs of an intelligent haunting by an entity they could communicate with. From there, they grew to become unintentional leaders of the Spiritualism movement. Then, years later, they confessed that it was nothing more than a hoax. Or was it? Let's find out as we dive into the strange world of the Fox sisters, and how they founded a belief system that still has roots today.
In this final deep dive of the Victorian Spiritualism series, Ashleigh closes the séance room door—then opens something much bigger: power. Victorian Spiritualism wasn't only about ghosts, raps, and ectoplasm. It was also a rare cultural doorway where women could claim spiritual and intellectual authority in a society that restricted their public voice. This episode is structured around five archetypes—five women, five expressions of spiritual authority, five ways of stepping through the veil:The 5 Archetypes & Featured WomenThe Trance Speaker: Cora L. V. Scott (Cora Hatch) (1840–1923) — trance lecturing as a “loophole” for women to teach philosophy publiclyThe Movement Builder: Emma Hardinge Britten (1823–1899) — turning Spiritualism into infrastructure through writing, history, and organizingThe Esoteric Architect: Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831–1891) — building cosmology and founding the Theosophical SocietyThe Embodied Medium: Florence Cook (c.1856–1904) — materialization séances, “Katie King,” and the gendered scrutiny of embodied powerThe Symbolic Visionary: Pamela Coleman Smith (“Pixie”) (1878–1951) — the creative force behind the most influential modern tarot template (and the long erasure of her credit)Episode highlightsWhy Victorian Spiritualism created a socially “acceptable” way for women to speak publiclyHow trance lecturing became power-through-plausible-deniabilityThe moment Spiritualism shifts from parlor spectacle into worldview and philosophyA beginner-friendly explanation of what the Theosophical Society was (and why it mattered)The high-stakes tension of physical mediumship—and why women's bodies became the battleground for beliefWhy Pamela Coleman Smith's illustrated minors changed tarot forever (and why that matters for modern intuitive reading)Series wrap + what's nextThis episode ties a bow on the Victorian Spiritualism series—and then gently opens the next doorway. **Discussion begins at 4:30**In the late 1950s, a quiet family in the English town of Hexham experienced a tragedy that would forever change their lives, and eventually become one of the most famous alleged cases of reincarnation in modern history. In 1957, two young sisters, Joanna and Jacqueline Pollock, were killed in a car accident while walking to church with a friend. Their parents, devastated by the loss, tried to rebuild their lives while carrying unimaginable grief. But about a year later, something extraordinary happened. Their mother gave birth to twin girls: Jennifer and Gillian. Almost immediately, their father became convinced that the twins were somehow the rebirth of the daughters he had lost. As the girls grew older, they began displaying strange similarities to their deceased sisters, including shared personality traits, specific fears, and even what appeared to be memories of places and events they had never experienced. One twin was even born with birthmarks that closely resembled scars that Jacqueline had before her death. The story would go on to attract the attention of researchers studying reincarnation, including psychiatrist Ian Stevenson, who documented cases of children claiming memories of past lives around the world. But the Pollock Sisters case raises a difficult question: were these eerie similarities evidence of something beyond our understanding… or could they be explained by grief, suggestion, and coincidence? Did the Fox Sisters really talk to the dead, or start the biggest paranormal hoax in American history? Host Aaron Sagers is joined by author Barb Rosenstock to explore American Spirits, the true story of the sisters who launched the Spiritualism movement in the lead up to the Civil War with their mysterious “spirit rappings.” In her compelling book that goes deep into the strange lives of celebrity, famous interactions, and struggles with alcohol, Barb discusses belief vs. deception, why séances took hold across America, and how grief and the media fueled a national obsession with the afterlife. She also answers the question of whether Leah Fox is the villain of the story. Plus, a look at Houdini's Library and Harry Houdini's lifelong love of books. Question: Have you attended a seance, and did you found it convincing? _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. How much of your life is spent performing a role versus actually inhabiting your own skin? For many high-achieving women and business owners, the "hustle" isn't just a schedule, it's a shield. Today, I'm joined by my partner in crime, Stephanie Singer, to pull back the curtain on our last BLSS retreat and why the "magic" people felt wasn't accidental...it was deeply somatic. We dive into the necessity of physical proximity in a world that has become overly digitized and disconnected. As a trauma expert, I see how often we try to "mind" our way out of core wounds, but true transformation happens when you are witnessed in a safe, high-frequency container. We discuss the radical act of valuing yourself enough to step out of your daily environment and into a space designed for your expansion. This isn't just about a "getaway"; it's about deprogramming from the societal expectations that demand women be everything to everyone while leaving nothing for themselves. We explore how vulnerability acts as a catalyst for leadership and why reclaiming your consciousness requires the courage to be seen in your most authentic state. Magic and Medicines is BACK - just like the ooky-spooky ghosts summoned up by believers in this episode's topic - Spiritualism! As we discuss, philosophically speaking 'Spiritualism' is a big old tradition, involving any belief system rooted in concepts of souls, spirits, or supernatural forces. In the 19th century however, during the Second Great Awakening in upstate New York, Spiritualist ideas from a range of Revivalist traditions combined to make something new.Exploding in popularity following America's Civil War, then booming again in Britain after the Great War, new generations of 'Mediums' had come forth, channeling ghosts and cosmic forces in ways that would have been recognisable in Prophets, Holy Maids and Cunning Folk from the Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance eras.Which is to say, Necromancy was back after a rebrand - and so were its enemies, in the forms of debunkers, prosecutors, and many a Society of Psychical Research. From rapping tables to sudden splurges of ectoplasm, Spiritualist manifestos to Harry Houdini hunting severed hands hidden in delicate places, this one has it all.So, turn off the lights, light some candles, and let's all hold hands...Is there anybody there?!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Tonight's guest is David from Essex in the UK. What begins in childhood develops over time into a series of deeply physical and psychological encounters. David describes being drawn into spiritualist circles despite initial skepticism, repeatedly drawn into situations where others believed he was more than a passive participant, and experiencing moments where his body appeared to respond before his mind ever agreed. He is part of the Essex UFO and Paranormal Group, taking part in investigations and group work connected to unexplained experiences across the region.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/2026One Life | One Story (Promo)A podcast about real people's lives, each episode centers on a single person and a defining experience,Listen on all podcast apps: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5EE7HbNItkQQbJdtZCHt88Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/one-life-one-story/id1861678226Spreaker:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/one-life-one-story--6823002If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show with a virtual coffee:https://ko-fi.com/ufochroniclespodcastFollow and Subscribe on X to get ad-free episodesX: https://x.com/UFOchronpodcast/Want to share your encounter on the show?Email: UFOChronicles@gmail.comOr Fill out Guest Form:https://forms.gle/uGQ8PTVRkcjy4nxS7Podcast Merchandise:https://www.teepublic.com/user/ufo-chronicles-podcastHelp Support UFO CHRONICLES by becoming a Patron:https://patreon.com/UFOChroniclespodcastAll Links for Podcast:https://linktr.ee/UFOChroniclesPodcastThank you for listening!Like share and subscribe it really helps me when people share the show on social media, it means we can reach more people and more witnesses and without your amazing support, it wouldn't be possible.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ufo-chronicles-podcast--3395068/support.
