This week on Business Over Beer, the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only The Sasquatch Hunters, it's part 2 of our interview with Freelance Travel Writer, Matt Wastradowski. In this episode, Matt tells us about a few more of his favorite hikes from his book, Moon Pacific Northwest Hiking. Also, we compare Matt the freelance writer to Matt the small business owner, and how the journey he went on, both metaphorical and literal, is the same journey that most small business owners go on. And, we ask Matt if he's ever encountered Sasquatch, you'll have to listen to find out if he has. Prost! In this episode: Hiking all alone by oneself, as Matt did for much of this book, is a metaphor for what it's like to be an entrepreneur; Some days you feel like you might die, while other days you feel total freedom and empowerment and are surrounded by the most beautiful views in the world. Much like writing a travel guide, as an entrepreneur and a small business owner, there will always be moments of "What have I done?" When he started freelancing he thought he would be working less, but turned out he was working so much more. Writing this book was of course hard and draining, but it pales in comparison to those moments of genuine transcendence, excitement and gratitude that he gets to do what he loves. Matt was not always a big hiker, as a kid he quit the boy scouts because it was too outdoorsy. It's not just about writing a book, but also about trying to inspire that a passion in others to do something may might think is not possible. After college, he tried several jobs and realized that he was looking for something he was never going to find in a 9-5 job. Writing this book was a fun game of discovery and being able to share that with others to inspire a passion for this region. Angie's Mystery Beer: Boulevard Brewing - Kansas City, MO Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, 11.8% ABV, 32 IBU "Over-the-top but surprisingly approachable, this twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat. Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out. Roughly one-third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer; the rest is aged for up to a year (or more!) in both first and second use whiskey casks." This week on Business Over Beer, we welcome big time Hollywood (Assistant) Director, Jason C. Brown. He shares with us how he went from a Zoology degree at Miami University of Ohio to working on some of the biggest shows in Hollywood. Most notably, Jason has been the First Assistant Director on Drunk History and has directed the short films Panic Button, Imaginary Friends and soon to be released Meet Cute. Other credits include Brews Brothers, The Mindy Project, NCIS LA, Awkward and Medium, among many others. We get a little sneak peek into what it's actually like working in Hollywood, the actual "work", not the perceived glitz and glam. Prost! In this episode: Jason talks about the "Midwest work ethic", and how that helped him stand out when he was getting started. Preparation is key to success in any industry; Nothing ever goes as planned, so everyone on set, on a team, in a business, has to have some element of thinking outside the box. Plan for all contingencies, see it before it happens and respond. Networking. Do it (That's it, that's the whole bullet point). Don't say "No" to any job that might help you learn your craft or industry. There's learning to be had from all situations; Learn from the good AND the bad directors/managers/business owners you work with. Don't be afraid to tell people what you want and go for it. Guest Beer: Boulevard Brewing - Kansas City, MO Jam Band Berry Ale, 5.9% ABV, 6 IBU "Accompanying a simple malt base, blueberry, raspberry and tart cherry play in perfect harmony to create a slightly tart ale that sings with ripe, bursting fruit flavor. Aromas of dark berries, citrus and melon open the show, bridging to zippy fruit flavors that meld into an easy-drinking summer beer worthy of an encore." Angie's Mystery Beer: Stone Brewing - Escondido, CA Enjoy By 07.04.20 IPA, 9.4% ABV, 90 IBU "For this version of Stone Enjoy By IPA we thought: “We don’t always have a filter, so why should our beer?” By skipping a step and letting this devastatingly fresh, golden-hued double IPA go unfiltered, the beer takes on a hazy appearance and its peach and tropical fruit hop aroma are intensified. So though it may sound like it, this missed step was no misstep." Episode Links: Jason C. Brown IMDB Panic Button - Short Film Directed by Jason C. This is a great episode with a ton of relevant and useful tips for combat athletes! Jason C. Brown shares a ton of information about kettlebell conditioning for jiu-jitsu and other martial arts including the details of kettlebell form, competitions, and designing conditioning programs for different people with different goals. We also riff on old-school jiu-jitsu techniques and why they still work. Give it a listen and, as always, please share it with someone else if you think it'll be useful for them!
