Today's podcast features Rafe Kelley, owner of Evolve Move Play. Rafe has studied and taught a multitude of movement practices spanning gymnastics, parkour, martial arts, weightlifting, and more for over 20 years. His passion is to help people build the physical practice that will help make them the strongest, most adaptable, and most resilient version of themselves in movement and life. Rafe has had a profound impact on my coaching and training philosophy and has helped me expand my views on the totality of the bio-psycho-social model of movement and human performance. Much of modern training is overly prescriptive, reliant on drills, and overemphasizes winning. This leads to practices with a reduced learning potential, a downplay of creativity, and a lowered ceiling of movement and skill potential. It also leads to less engaging practices in general. In today's episode, Rafe delves into his unique methods and teachings that foster creative and adaptable athletic movement. He explores the interplay of constraints and play in sport and skill training, underscores the significance of creativity and improvisation in movement (and how to cultivate it), and shares insights on the role of joy in movement. Rafe also touches upon collaborative movement training, rough-housing, dance, and movement improvisation, and how these elements can shape better learners and movers in their respective sports or movement practices. By gaining a deeper understanding of play, exploration, and constraints, we can unlock the full potential of human performance. Main Points 2:30- The balance between constraints and free play in coaching, as well as children's skill development 15:30- Training based off of “following one's joy”, versus more set skill rehearsal 25:30- Creativity and improvisation in human movement and sport performance 32:30- Athleticism, dance, and individual dancing versus dancing with others, in context of sport 41:00- Roughhousing and links to team sport movement and problem solving 48:00- Forms of play that are both done for winning, as well as learning, exploration and mutual growth 57:30- Scaling and continuums of effort in individual and team sports, for improved learning 1:07:00- The use of roughhousing, and contact improv oriented work, on facilitating play states, and opening up movement options in a donor sport format Rafe Kelley Quotes “Soccer works because there is a set of constraints; there are structures that allow the game to exist, but there are infinite degrees of freedom once the constraints are in place” “Usually I'll have 3 areas I'm working in, and then one core skill” “At the end of the session, I'll ask them “What was your rose, your bud and your thorn”. They get to reflect on what they want to hold going forward” “Sweet, we are playing tag. How do we add a little more speed demand to that tag. How do we play a version of tag that looks like this, and gives you the thing you are looking for?” “Creativity is the ability to create a solution to a movement problem, in a sport situation” “What made Barry Sanders special wasn't that he did set plays better than anybody else” “A gymnast doing a high bar routine, is actually adjusting constantly to try to achieve the goal; they are not doing the exact same thing… but that's far less ...

Dr. John Vervaeke engages with Rafe Kelley, a visionary movement coach, in a nuanced discussion that meanders from the philosophy of human movement to the meaning of life. Kelley imparts his unique approach to personal growth, advocating for a harmonious blend of physicality and philosophical depth. He delves into the significance of sensory-motor learning, ethical action, and the role of movement in understanding both self and world. The pair traverse an array of complex topics such as the connection between cognition and emotion, the profound philosophy behind parkour, and even venture into existential crises among athletes. Kelley compellingly argues that modern humans have lost touch with their natural environment, a point underscored by Vervaeke's reflections on serious play and rituals. Drawing on literature from Maps of Meaning to predictive processing, the dialogue is layered with insights into the integration of body and mind.    Rafe Kelley (@RafeKelley) is a pioneering movement coach and founder of Evolve Move Play, an organization devoted to helping individuals reconnect with the natural world and their own innate capacity for movement. With a background spanning disciplines from parkour and martial arts to gymnastics, Kelley advocates for a holistic approach to physical training that emphasizes the mind-body connection, ethical development, and personal growth. Through workshops, podcasts, and seminars, Rafe Kelley is redefining the landscape of what it means to move, think, and live harmoniously.   Resources:   Rafe Kelley: Website | YouTube | X     Dr. John Vervaeke: Website | YouTube | Patreon | X The Vervaeke Foundation Workshops | Evolve Move Play Volunteer Park Trust Wilderness Awareness School   Voices with Vervaeke - YouTube: The deep return to nature in order to cultivate wisdom and meaning w/ Kyle Koch   Rafe Kelley - YouTube John Vervaeke & Lex Friedman on Return to the Source Nest Robbers: Return to the Source 2021    The Dr. Jordan B. [00:15:30] Dr. John Vervaeke discusses the relationship between physiological awareness and emotions, suggesting that even when people are immobilized, they can still experience emotions. [00:19:40] Highlighting the complexity of the relationship between sensory motor capacity and cognitive ability, Vervaeke suggestis a top-down approach might also be at play. [00:23:16] Rafe Kelley discusses the importance of our relationship with 'being' and how it drives meaning in life. [00:32:53] Dr. John Vervaeke and Rafe Kelley delve into the transformative effect of parkour on the perception and understanding of the environment, enriching and expanding the geometries of thought and physical relationships. [00:38:23] Painting a somber picture, Rafe Kelley states that modern Westerners have disconnected from nature, which strips the environment of its innate meaning. [00:43:44] Discussing how collective intelligence can arise from group physical activities, Kelley talks about widening the scope of what we consider 'intelligent behavior'. [00:46:14] Dr. Vervaeke shifts the conversation to cognitive and sensory motor movements, emphasizing their complex and exaptive relationship. [00:50:14] Cognitive dimensions get a new perspective as Dr. Vervaeke talks about the role of beauty in cultivating wisdom. [00:57:26] Questioning our notion of cognition, Vervaeke explores the possibility of sensory motor aspects extending to all cognition. [01:00:20] Rafe Kelley highlights humans' unique ability to throw objects with precise aim, challenging the notion of human physical inferiority. [01:02:40] Dr. Vervaeke reflects on how martial arts tap into an intuitive understanding of philosophy, giving a nod to embodied cognition. [01:12:00] Both Kelley and Vervaeke weigh in on the meaning crisis, and how their perspectives on movement and cognition offer a pathway out. [01:18:20] Kelley mentions Jordan Peterson's model of the archetypal hero and suggests that the physical interaction with the environment is undervalued. [01:19:20] The conversation concludes with a proposition for a future discussion on the role of embodiment in response to AI.

If you can take off your shoes, take off your shoes, and if you can hang from a tree branch, hang from a tree branch and start there and feel what it feels like in your body... Dr. Jordan B. Peterson, joined by movement and parkour expert Rafe Kelley, discuss the importance of rough-and-tumble play for developing children, how a lifestyle centered around movement can expand our grasp and involvement with the natural world, and why society should value masculine activities, rather than adhering to the push for feminization in all aspects of modern life. Rafe Kelley is an entrepreneur and advocate for a lifestyle centered around human movement. He suffered at a young age from ADHD, causing him to struggle in school. As it would happen, he came into contact with a mentor who recognized his need for play, encouraged time in nature, and taught him to productively roughhouse. This quickly resulted in Kelley advancing in his studies, launching him on his life path. In college, he studied anthropology and evolutionary biology, falling in love with martial arts and parkour along the way. He would go on to establish the first parkour gym on the west coast, Parkour Visions, before developing a new fitness lifestyle based on primal movement that Kelley calls “Evolve, Move, Play.” - Sponsors - Birch Gold Group: Text "JORDAN" to 989898 for your no-cost, no-obligation, FREE information kit. Hallow: Try Hallow for 3 months FREE: https://hallow.com/jordan  - Links - For Rafe Kelley: Join Rafe on an Evolve Move Play retreat: https://www.evolvemoveplay.com/retreats/ Rafe on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rafekelley/?hl=en Rafe on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/rafekelley

Rafe Kelley has spent much of his life moving and promoting movement. Rafe is the owner of 'Evolve Move Play' and has an amazing philosophical and experiential grasp of movement. He has been involved with many different martial art forms, has been practicing parkour since its humble beginnings and is a huge natural movement advocate! His 'Evolve Move Play' podcast and views on movement have really expanded my perspective. In the health and fitness industry, all too often movement is abstracted into components of fitness. Gyms are often highly contrived environments. There is a bias to focus on all that can be measured but as Rafe says; 'not everything that can be measured is neccessary and not everthing that is neccessary can be measured'. Yes, there is a time and place for; measuring, doing isolated exercises and controlling the environment but thinking 'this is the only way' is self limiting. Sometimes we should 'just move in nature'! Why? Well, from an evolutionary standpoint, before 'the comforts of the current age', there was a time where if you couldn't; run, climb, swim, hang, wrestle, crawl, throw, dance; you wouldn't survive. As humans we were designed to do all these general physical skills coupled with our natural environment. So, let's try some of these meaningful human movements. Perhaps overtime it helps you better couple how you perceive the environment with your movement, your rhythm, timing and co-ordination? Perhaps it challenges you to do potentially fear evoking/fun/challenging/playful things that you normally wouldn't do? Perhaps it helps push you towards better functional athleticism rather than being able to do a meaningless lift in a very controlled environment? Thanks for the enlightening chat Rafe! Motor learning is the worldview by which you keep yourself from over-compartmentalizing elements of a total training program.  It's how you discover the window, or lens by which an athlete acquires mastery in their sport, and also determines how you go about constructing a training session with the “whole” in mind.  It allows one to see the forest from the trees in the process of athletic mastery.  If we only listen to “speed”, “output” and “drill” oriented material, and leave out the actual over-arching process of motor learning in any sort of athletic performance discussion, we end up with a more over-compartmentalized, less sustainable, less effective, and less enjoyable model of training On the podcast today, Rafe and Charles speak in the first half, on games they particularly enjoy from a true “generalist” point of view; games that encapsulate the most essential elements of “human-ness” in movement.  These game principles can be plugged into either general (for the sake of better outputs for the subsequent training session), or specific warmups (for the sake of “donor” learning to the main session).  In the second half, we get into a detailed discussion on dynamic points of learning and coaching, speaking on points of drill vs. holistic approach to skills, frequency of feedback (and types of feedback), working with highly analytical athletes, checking the effectiveness of one's cues, and much more. Timestamps and Main Points: 4:41 – Why Rafe and Charles love rugby as a multi-dimensional game that encapsulates a lot of human qualities and opportunities 14:12 – “Hybrid” games that coaches like to play as a generalist warmup to a strength training session, and the emergence of “king of the course” 23:21 – How to craft a “donor” activity to prepare for your primary training activity 32:49 – What the balance is, in parkour, on teaching actual technique, vs. decisions 52:08 – How to properly tell stories and frame skills to an athlete, without letting words get in the way 1:02:11 – How many efforts to let an athlete perform, before coaches should seek to intervene in the form of a cue or instruction, and how to help athletes be better self-learners 1:14:34 – Cueing and instructing athletes who may desire more structure than others 1:22:37 – Thoughts on velocity of a movement, and the transferability of drills, or slower versions of skills, versus fast movements 1:27:02 – “Feeding the Error” and principles of variable learning that can assist in skill development 1:32:38 – How to improve learning by reducing potential “fear” constraints in sports with a potential risk element “I would contest that (rugby) is the best designed ball sport… it's the only sport I played that allowed for a range of body types” “Team sports have all of (generalist fitness) demands in them… and you have to do it in a team manner, you have to cooperate with other people”

Welcome back to another episode of The Heart Speaks Podcast. In this episode, I speak with Rafe Kelly, founder of Evolve, Move, Play, an organization that's dedicated to getting people off the couch and moving their bodies out in nature and the outdoors. Now, why is this important? Because as human beings, our bodies were designed to move, and in fact, we cannot actually have a sense of meaning without movement. In this episode, we discuss why that is, and we dive into other juicy topics, like why some movement practices are worth pursuing more than others, why roughhousing is essential to developing empathy, and how you cannot be truly non-violent unless you are capable of being violent and consciously choose not to use violence. Enjoy the episode!

What're the “use cases” of barefoot training and orthotics, respectively? What're the easiest ways to integrate plyometric and jump training into the programming of a general population client? Where does “play” fit in in the context of an athlete's training session or training week? Can there be such a thing as “too much” structure in training? What do machine learning and human motor learning have in common? What do the terms “ancestral” and “transhumanistic” have anything to do with the world of physical preparation? What KPIs do Joel and Tim care about MOST in ensuring long term client success? …then give this episode of the More Train, Less Pain podcast a listen!
