#398: The Lucrative AI Training Opportunity for Freelance Writers

High-Income Business Writing

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 7, 2026 28:36

A lot of writers hear the word "training" and picture a conference room full of strangers, a slide deck, and a formal curriculum. That's not what I'm talking about here. The training opportunity most freelancers are sitting on is much smaller, much more personal, and already happening inside your existing client relationships. You're just doing it for free, and you probably haven't recognized it for what it is. In this episode, I break down what AI training actually looks like at the freelancer level: one-on-one coaching with a key contact, a focused small-team engagement, an ongoing embedded arrangement. And I spend real time on the objection that stops most writers before they even get started: "I don't know enough to teach anyone." The knowledge gap between you and your clients is bigger than you think. And the clients who need this help most aren't looking for a guru. They're looking for someone a few steps ahead who already knows them and their business. What You'll Learn Why the training work you're already doing informally is worth real money What a realistic training engagement looks like at the freelancer level, from a simple coaching series to a small team workshop Why you don't need to be an AI expert to deliver real value to your clients right now How to think about pricing when you're selling a transformation, not hours Why training engagements have a natural tendency to open doors to other, deeper work with the same client What to say to a current client to start this conversation without it feeling like a pitch Key Ideas & Takeaways 1. You're already doing this work. If you've ever spent time on a call walking a client through an AI tool, troubleshooting their outputs, or explaining why their results came out generic, that's training. You've been delivering it informally for free. The move is to recognize it, name it, and package it as a real engagement. 2. Training doesn't mean a room full of strangers. At the freelancer level, training usually means one key contact at a client you already know, or a small team of two to four people. It's focused, practical, and built around their specific tools and content types. A coaching series of four to six sessions is a perfectly complete engagement. No slide deck required. 3. You don't need to be an expert. To a third grader, an eighth grader is a really big, smart kid. You don't need to know everything about AI. You need to know more than your client does right now, and for most of your clients, that bar is lower than you think. What makes you specifically valuable isn't generic AI knowledge. It's your understanding of their content, their industry, and what good looks like for them. 4. Price toward the outcome, not the hours. A training engagement isn't worth your hourly rate times the number of sessions. It's worth the value of the transformation you're helping the client achieve: time saved, quality improved, risk reduced. Start by asking what it's worth to your client to have a reliable, on-brand AI workflow in place. Then price toward that number. 5. Training gets you closer to the work. When you're embedded in a client's process, you see things you wouldn't see from the outside: where quality control is breaking down, where the content strategy is unclear, where editorial judgment is missing before content ships. That proximity naturally surfaces new ways to help, without any pushing required. Action Steps Think of one current client who has asked you AI-related questions in the last few months. That's your starting point. Write down what you've already been helping them with informally. That's the foundation of your first training offer. Sketch out what a four to six session coaching series would look like for that client, built around their specific content types and workflows. Think through the outcome: what would it be worth to that client to have a reliable, on-brand AI process in place? Use that to anchor your pricing. Draft one paragraph describing the offer in plain language: what it covers, how long it runs, what the client walks away with. Keep it simple and concrete. Have one conversation. Tell a current client you've noticed they've been asking AI questions and ask if it would be useful to formalize that a bit.

Tim Allen, Chief Growth Officer at MBE CPAs, shares how his lifelong passion for writing and motorsports has enriched both his personal and professional life. He reminisces about his early days getting in trouble for producing a black market student newspaper and how those writing skills, encouraged by his English teacher mom, have led to freelance opportunities with industry publications. Tim discusses his favorite experiences interviewing fascinating people in the automotive world, including celebrities like Keanu Reeves and Aaron Shelby. He believes his pursuits outside of work make him a better business developer and communicator, helping him craft better pitches and approach conversations from multiple angles. Tim emphasizes the value of bringing one's best self, including unique interests, into the workplace, noting how sharing these passions fosters stronger human connections. He encourages others to embrace their interests unapologetically, underlining that being comfortable with who you are paves the way for greater fulfillment at work and beyond. Episode Highlights · Tim highlights how his love for writing and motorsports not only enriches his personal life but also sharpens his skills and creativity in his corporate marketing and business development roles. · His experiences as a freelance writer, interviewing notable personalities and going behind the scenes at motorsports events underscore how following your interests can create unique and memorable opportunities. · Tim believes sharing personal interests (your "And") at work fosters genuine connections, makes you more relatable, and helps build stronger, more engaging relationships with colleagues and clients. · He encourages people not to hide who they are; being open about your hobbies or passions leads to a richer, more authentic professional (and personal) life, even if it takes time to become comfortable with that vulnerability. · Tim values spending time, like coffee catch-ups or casual chats, getting to know people beyond their job titles, emphasizing that these interactions are not only rewarding but also an essential (and too often overlooked) part of building community and culture in and out of work.

#382: The Truth About AI and Freelance Writers — What 157 Writers Just Revealed

High-Income Business Writing

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2025 70:40

The AI adoption picture is nuanced In this episode, I share some fascinating insights about AI usage among writers and the impact it's having on their business. Last month, I sent out a simple 10-question survey to my community about AI usage, fears, and business impact. I received 157 complete responses from writers across every experience level, from brand-new freelancers to 15+ year veterans. What they shared was, in some ways, congruent with what I've been saying for the past few months on the topic of AI integration in our businesses as freelancers. But in other ways, the data was very surprising and went against some of my assumptions. . Overall, here's what I discovered: The story we're telling ourselves about AI and freelance writing — both the doom-and-gloom version and the "AI will solve everything" version — is missing something crucial. The real story is way more nuanced. More interesting. And way more hopeful. Below is a very short, high-level summary of what I uncovered. There's way more detail in the audio. And, again, you can download my full (and free) PDF report on the survey findings here: Key stats & signals Adoption is real: 93% use AI to some degree; ~74% are regular or fully integrated users. Impact splits three ways: 34% say AI elevates their work or enables new offerings; 41% mainly see time savings; ~25% report little or negative impact. The “integration dividend”: Fully integrated users were ~6.5x more likely than non-users to report revenue growth. Client disclosure: 49.7% haven't told clients they use AI. Among those who did, reactions skew positive/neutral 4:1 over negative. Security is the true brake: Confidentiality concerns are the only fear strongly correlated with hesitation. Market reality check: 86% report their business is doing about the same or better than a year ago. What's working (and what isn't) Winners focus on value, not speed. Positioning AI as a quality and capability lift draws nearly double the positive client reactions versus “it helps me go faster.” Dabbling doesn't pay. Occasional users see flat results; systematic workflows create compounding gains. Efficiency ≠ income, unless pricing and packaging evolve. One in three sees clear AI benefits without revenue growth because time savings get reinvested in the same low-margin work or “free” add-ons. Four writer personas Velocity Builders (29%) – Fully integrated, confident, doubling down. Next move: tighten packaging and raise fees. Cautious Optimizers (28%) – Consistent users, worried about client perceptions. Next move: use “value” framing when discussing process. DIY Skeptics (23%) – Occasional or non-users, held back by security/ethics. Next move: private-mode workflows and clear data policies. Value Elevators (20%) – Regular users leveraging AI for strategy and advisory. Next move: document outcomes and increase rates. Practical moves you can make this week Map your workflow and insert AI where it upgrades research, planning, analysis, repurposing, and client communication—not just drafting. Reframe your client narrative: “AI helps me spend more time on strategic thinking and client-specific insight.” Audit deliverables from the last 6 months and convert “extras” (competitive intel, repurposing plans, frameworks) into defined, billable components. Triage security: adopt approved tools/workspaces for NDA-sensitive work so you can move forward without risk. Recommended paths forward Efficiency Path: Do the same work faster. Good entry point; not durable on its own. Capability Path: Expand offerings and depth; move up the value ladder. Leadership Path: Guide clients on their own AI integration and workflows; highest leverage. Resources & next steps AI Advantage Bootcamp: Registration opens around October 20. Be on the lookout for details. And if you're not already.  Share the episode: Know a freelancer rethinking their positioning with AI? Send this their way.

If you've been told you need to hustle harder or wait until you're "healthy enough" to start your business, this conversation will change how you think about capacity, pricing, and what's actually possible. What you'll learn:How to structure a freelance business that generates full-time income on part-time hours (20-25 hours/week)Why pricing by deliverables instead of hours is the key to sustainable freelancing with chronic illnessHow to turn your health journey into business expertise and find clients who value your unique perspectivePerfect for: Freelance writers, consultants, and creatives with chronic illness who want to build sustainable businesses without sacrificing their health.Send Me A Text & Share Your QA's or ThoughtsJoin The 5-Day Audio Series - Rooted Sales Loved this episode? It was a crazy, and at times hilarious week in the NFL, but before Bomani Jones recaps Week 8 he begins today's episode by discussing Dwyane Wade's sculpture. Why does it look so bad and why have modern day sculpture artists gotten worse? (0:53) From there Bomani first talks about Jameis Winston and the Browns who had a big upset win over the Baltimore Ravens. Bomani says that watching Jameis is like watching Uncut Gems, while listening to him talk sounds like you're at a church. (4:15) Then Bomani covers Anthony Richardson's statements of being tired, and the insane Bears hail mary, more specially the Bears corner who let the catch happen because he was taunting the fans. (9:30) After briefly talking about Trevon Diggs' comments to a reporter, Bomani transitions to Nick Bosa who made headlines for wearing a MAGA hat after the conclusion of last nights game. Bomani listens to Bosa's postgame statements or lack thereof, and asks the question to Bosa, why is this important? Bomani compares Bosa's actions to what Colin Kaepernick's stand and why he suffered so much more than Nick Bosa.
