In 1974, Chinatown - now widely considered to be among the greatest films ever made - was nominated for 11 Oscars. Despite the creative confidence and freedom of the era, the 1970s were a time of tolerance for the morally questionable, or even downright illegal, behaviour of some of the powerful men creating these movies.Chinatown's director, Roman Polanski, is the most totemic of those figures. His 1977 indictment for drugging and raping a 13 year-old led the director to flee the United States and seek legal and creative sanctuary in France, where he has remained and continued to make celebrated movies such at The Pianist, for which he won the Best Director Academy Award in 2003. Fifty years on from Chinatown's release, Mark Kermode and Ellen E Jones ask how we can appreciate cinematic masterpieces like Chinatown which have been made by very problematic people? Ellen gets about as close as it's possible to get to the creators of Chinatown - Hawk Koch worked with Roman Polanski on the set of Rosemary's Baby and, as the First Assistant Director on Chinatown, he was deeply connected with the movie and its director. In a wide ranging interview, he shares his memories from the set, discusses his friendship with Polanski and reflects on remaining in love with a movie despite its troubled past.Claire Dederer's Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma is a highly personal account of her own relationship with the works of film-makers like Roman Polanski and Woody Allen, and the questions of how knowledge of an artist's personal life does or doesn't change the way we feel about their art. Mark talks to Claire about the ethical and emotional issues of separating the art from the artist.Produced by Freya Hellier. A Hidden Flack production for BBC Radio 4
A graduate of Boston College, Burke started out in television as a production Assistant while working other odd jobs, from bar bouncer, golf caddy to factory assemblyman, to sustain the meager TV industry income. His height and physical build came in handy, scoring him a gig loading grip trucks for Powerhouse Films, which further exposed him to commercials and films in and around the New England area. He soon became the ‘go to' guy of Production Assistants in Boston, working every motion picture produced in Massachusetts. After a move to Los Angeles in 1990, Burke quickly moved up the production ranks, working as First Assistant Director on an independent film with Johnny Depp. Nicknamed “the Irish Bull” by his west coast colleagues, Burke went on to secure Assistant Director credits including, Jerry Bruckheimer's acclaimed TV series Skin, Close to Home, CSI Miami, and the pilot for Desperate Housewives. He spent his last five years on Chicago PD. In 2003, Burke was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Three years of doctor visits, nine operations and chemotherapy treatments were all included in part of his rigorous 14-hour shoot day routine. To no surprise, given his well known tenacity, Burke conquered the disease into remission mostly by himself. The experience empowered him to take inventory of his life, specifically his trade, leading him to approach his career from an alternative perspective that was better aligned with his personal values. Best known in the industry for his talent, perseverance and respectful collaboration with colleagues on all levels.Socials:Website: https://tommyburke.com/LinkedIn: Tommy Burke Insta: Tommy Burke @tommy_burke_dga Podcast: Not Just Sunglasses & Autographs podcast Enjoy the visual here on Youtube

As a versatile producer and assistant director, Dana Kuznetzkoff has worked on legendary projects which include Forrest Gump, 2 Days in the Valley and The Wire. Dana wears several hats in the film industry, and her approach toward selecting projects has a lot to do with the value of the collaboration to take place. The Bronx native was in the midst of taking a significant role in the world of advertising when a chance encounter, one that didn't go so well, veered her off onto a different path in a different industry — Film and Television. And through the years, Dana moved up the ranks from DGA trainee, when she worked on Jonathan Demme's Something Wild, to being head of the first unit. Along the way came important experiences on The Equalizer, Law & Order and Ron Howard's Far and Away. 1993 saw the first of several collaborations Dana has had with Robert Zemeckis, which, in addition to Gump, included Death Becomes Her; and Flight, the latter on which she was First Assistant Director. In television, Dana has worked as unit production manager of shows like Fringe, This is Us, and Monk, and has produced shows like The New Yorker Presents and the Steven Spielberg executive-produced Smash. In the non-fiction world, Dana has produced several impactful documentaries with a social activism bent; these include Thread, which surveys the life of female entrepreneurs in Afghanistan; and Tolerance and Acceptance, which takes place in the context of educating inner city kids in South Central, Los Angeles and East London. She serves on the Producers Council of the PGA, and is a member of NY Women in Film and Television and the DGA. Dana also recently taught at Columbia School of the Arts as an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Film. In our conversation, we discussed the climate of movie theaters and streaming; the WGA strike; the freelance film and television lifestyle; her favorite Jonathan Demme film; and why you should visit the Bronx Zoo. We also discussed her new documentary, Omara, about the surviving Cuban lead female vocalist of the Ry Cooder-produced Buena Vista Social Club.Opening Credits: Plastic Flowers - Lucy I Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0); A Banda de Joseph Tourton - #3. David McGiffert was First Assistant Director on close to 50 feature films including: all three of the Back to the Future films, Rain Man, Batman Returns, Tootsie, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Fisher King, Absence of Malice, Witness, The Firm, Vanilla Sky, King Kong, An Officer and a Gentleman and dozens of others. David began working in film in 1969 when a friend offered him a job as the second assistant director on a movie he was working on. Two weeks later, when that person quit, David inherited the first assistant director position and was tutored by the film's very patient Director who had, himself, been an assistant director.Subsequently, David worked beside a succession of experienced mentors who put him in the right place at the right time and allowed him opportunities he would not have been able to find for himself. During David's years as a First A.D. he never stopped learning the job, which is essentially carrying out the director's wishes for the day's shooting while guiding and facilitating the film's crew. First AD's manage the schedule and coordinate cast and crew to ensure that shoots run smoothly. Their work includes considering the project's budget, the time required, cast and crew availability and location limitations. This conversation will be an opportunity to discuss the things that actors may not have had the opportunity to talk about before. It may be particularly useful for actors with a theatre background who are not as familiar with the complexities of screen acting.

Follow Your Passion, No Matter What! This is a special episode of the podcast guys. I recently had a good friend of mine pass, Allan Wertheim. He was a legendary First Assistant Director and Unit Production Manager. Allan and I worked together almost 20 years ago on one of my first directing gigs. This is by far the most difficult project I have ever worked on and Allan was kind enough to mentor me and protect me from the siutation. He passed a few days ago at the age of 72 and my friend left it all on the field. He worked with legendary directors like Martin Scorsese and David Fincher but more importantly lived a happy life with his family. I wanted this episode to spotlight the fact that you can't leave with the music still inside of you. Take a listen to this special episode. I hope it inspires you a bit. What does a First Assistant Director actually do on set? Do you need one? The short answer is YES! I've directed with no First Assistant Directors, with bad 1st Assistant Directors, and with world-class First ADs and trust me I rather work with the latter. Today's guest is First Assistant Director, Brandon Riley. Brandon started out in the entertainment industry working as an Assistant Director and later joined the DGA. With a vast knowledge of how a set operates and functions, Brandon has since gone on to produce, line produce and UPM features and TV projects. Brandon is a natural born leader who aims to lead every show in a calm assertive manner. He prides himself in aiming to create an environment where both cast and crew are treated well and have an enjoyable experience on set. Also please subscribe to The Ankler at TheAnkler.com for more podcasts and stories like these about the entertainment industry. When you're filming a movie or a television show, when it's the last shot of the day, the First Assistant Director will call out, This is the Martini Shot!Meaning: after this shot is done, we're calling it a day. After this shot, you get your martini. Since 2004, veteran TV scribe Rob Long has been recording short commentaries on the foibles and fortunes of working in Hollywood on his Martini Shot podcast. For a decade and a half, the segments aired on KCRW and today we're delighted to have Martini Shot join The Ankler family and bring it to our subscribers. In this first Ankler installment, Rob explains why managing “the talent” — a term applicable to anyone in senior studio management, show-running, agencies or production — sometimes calls for techniques that are more commonly associated with calming infants. Or 19th century schizophrenics. Rob also reveals the strategy to winning any exchange involving talent, notes, deals, or even controversies that play out in the media. He guarantees it. Are you listening, Mr. Chapek? And don't miss his example of Netflix vs. Apple, which somehow managed to miss subscriber targets and bury “disappointing” viewership for season 2 of The Morning Show…and then went on to win the Oscar for CODA. More about Rob: he's been a television writer and producer for a long time. Longer, frankly, than anyone could have predicted. He's a co-founder of the conversation and podcast network, Ricochet, a regular contributor to Commentary magazine and the Washington Examiner, and a contributing editor at National Review. Early career milestones include being writer and co-executive producer of television comedy Cheers, and you can hear him discuss that experience in The Case For Broadcast TV in last week's Ankler Hot Seat podcast.Later career milestones include “a string of canceled television shows,” two books, a weekly commentary on public radio, a column for the English-language Abu Dhabi-based newspaper, The National and occasional writing for Time and (what was then) Newsweek. His first book, Conversations with My Agent, chronicled his early career in television. It was published in the U.K. by Faber & Faber, in the U.S. by Dutton, and in France by Actes Sud. His second book, Set Up, Joke, Set Up, Joke, was published in November 2005 by Bloomsbury.Rob's Martini Shot will be back every Wednesday. Tommy Burke started out in television as a production assistant while working other odd jobs, from bar bouncer, golf caddy to factory assemblyman, to supplement his meager TV industry income. He soon became the go to guy of production assistants in Boston, working almost every motion picture produced in Massachusetts. In his words: I feel dirty. I'm sweating bullets. It's already been a fourteen-hour day on set in the blazing Los Angeles sun and all I want to do is the shower. That is NOT going to happen. My day was far from over. Every other Thursday that summer of 2004, I would finish shooting Jerry Bruckheimer's acclaimed TV series Skin and then tack on a four-hour nightcap at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. As tough as my days were, I knew they'd get a lot worse if I skipped my date with four bags of poison at the all-night chemo ward. I would pass the hours of those late-night infusions watching classic 50s reruns, thinking about work, and thinking about life. Where I had been, where I was going, what I'd leave behind. That's where the seeds of this book were planted: in the desolate basement of Cedar-Sinai, while I waited for my fortnightly poison cocktail to empty into my arm and get to work. Not Just Sunglasses and Autographs follows me from bar bouncing in Boston to working on award-winning television and movies as I made my way up the entertainment industry ladder. It is an endearing story of overcoming the odds through dark humor, tenacity, authenticity, and a smile. I had originally envisioned this as the memoir of a man who'd beaten Hodgkin's Lymphoma and lived to tell the tale, but that was before I was pitched a curveball called Parkinson's Disease. Equal parts pep-talk and gut-punch, this unvarnished and vulnerable memoir-meets-handbook shares lessons I've learned in life and work and encourages readers to keep moving forward, embrace resilience, step out of their comfort zones, and take life head-on. Not Just Sunglasses and Autographs is 70,000 words and stands alone, but I also have stories in mind for a follow-up book. I look forward to hitting the road and supporting this book as I have brought hope and inspiration speaking about the film industry for the last twenty years. I've been in the industry for nearly forty years. Nicknamed “the Irish Bull” by my west coast colleagues, I earned my reputation and secured Assistant Director credits on productions including the film Close to Home, Skin, CSI Miami, the pilot for Desperate Housewives, and many others. I spent the last five years of my film career on location in Chicago, working as First Assistant Director on Chicago PD from 2014-2019. After my Parkinson's diagnosis in 2019, I hung up my AD walkie and returned to the west coast to enlist all of my drive, determination, spirit, stubbornness, and good humor in the second battle of my life.

The job of the assistant director is to work in concert with the director and the DP to get everything done on a movie set. As a 1st AD, Adam Somner is trusted by the industry's top directors to anticipate their needs, motivate the crew, figure out the schedule, and drive the entire production forward to finish each day on time. He finds the best way to keep everything moving smoothly on set is though humor, high energy and uniting everyone as a group, persuading people to do things on the schedule and timeline needed to complete the job. Adam's father, Basil Somner, worked for MGM Studios in England, and through him, Adam got a job as a runner/production assistant at age 17. He began working on movies in the late '80's, like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Superman IV, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? He worked under many assistant directors, observed how they took charge on set, and decided he was really interested in becoming an AD. Adam has worked on eight Ridley Scott films to date, as well as several of the late Tony Scott's films. He was first hired on a Ridley Scott film as a third assistant director on 1492: Conquest of Paradise and White Squall, then moved up to second assistant director on Gladiator, where he learned how to manage a huge crew of extras and background action from the 1st AD, Terry Needham. On Black Hawk Down, Adam was promoted to first assistant director for the second unit. Black Hawk Down was shooting in Morocco, and the second unit was responsible for most of the helicopter sequences, with lots of moving parts and extras, involving real Black Hawk helicopters and real U.S. military soldiers. After Black Hawk Down, Adam got the call to begin working with Steven Spielberg on War of the Worlds, where he quickly learned to read Spielberg's mind and keep an eye on the details. He's worked with Spielberg on ten films now, including Munich, Lincoln, and Ready Player One. A 1st AD is responsible for coordinating most of the background action. Adam's ability to work on big sets with lots of action, extras and special effects led director Paul Thomas Anderson to hire him for There Will Be Blood, and Anderson has since become a personal friend. Adam finds Anderson's on-set approach to be very thoughtful and measured. Unlike the action-heavy films Adam has worked on, he knew it was important to keep the crew and background actors quiet and subdued on Anderson's films with heavy dialog, such as The Master and Phantom Thread. For The Wolf of Wall Street, Adam was thrilled to work with director Martin Scorsese. Scorsese and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto had Adam sit in during their preproduction shotlisting process, so they were all thoroughly prepared. Scorsese loves shooting scenes with complex background action, and Adam delivered. He carefully rehearsed all the extras in different stages of panic as the brokers watched the stock market crash. For the famous in-flight orgy scene, Adam wasn't totally sure how he wanted to deal with not just one sex scene, which is hard enough, but several at once. So he decided to hire a choreographer to help rehearse and plan all the action, making sure each background player knew exactly what they were doing and taking care that everyone was comfortable with their role in front of the camera. Adam was excited to work with Alejandro González Iñárritu on some of Birdman, and as the 1st AD on one of the may units shooting The Revenant, where Iñárritu and the DP Emmanuel Lubezki “Chivo” wanted everything shot and rehearsed during magic hour. Rehearsals were incredibly important on both Birdman and The Revenant, since Iñárritu and Chivo shot many scenes in one single shot. Adam is currently working on Killers of the Flower Moon with director Martin Scorsese.
