On the 123rd episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I'm delighted to welcome our guest, Jessica Böhme. Jessica is a professor and academic director of technology management at FHM Berlin, and she is the founder of the Institute for Practical ekoPhilosophy (IPeP). She writes a weekly newsletter "wild:philosophy," where she explores how to live life in a collapsing world. Her expertise lies in utilising philosophy as a meta-technology for individual, social, and ecological transformations. In this episode, we delve into the profound question of how to live this life—particularly in the context of sustainability and personal responsibility. We discuss the concept of 'messy disturbance' in navigating life's complexities, the paralysis that can come from heightened awareness, and reflect on the experiments Jessica undertook to align her actions with her values—including her remarkable "one dress" experiment, in which she wore the same dress every day for over a year. This conversation celebrates curiosity, the wisdom gained through lived experience, paying attention to life's feedback and how philosophy can be practiced in everyday life, offering a grounding force amidst uncertainty.Ultimately, this episode points to a richness of life that can be experienced when we allow ourselves to be seen. For more of Jessica's work, check out the following:Website: https://www.jessicaboehme.com/ IPeP: https://www.institute-pep.com/Newsletter: https://jessicaboehme.substack.com/ Books: https://www.jessicaboehme.com/books/Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life if you'd like to explore your own lines of self-inquiry through 1-on-1 coaching, take part in my 5-week What is a Good Life? group courses, discuss experiences I create to stimulate greater trust, communication, and connection, amongst your leadership teams, or you simply want to get in touch.- For the What is a Good Life? podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- Exploring one-on-one coaching: https://www.whatisagood.life/p/one-on-one-coaching- What is a Good Life? Feeling stuck? You're not alone. Beth shares how a simple meditation practice helped her shift from a cycle of scarcity to a mindset of abundance. After starting the year strong, she found herself in an emotional lull, something many of us can relate to. But instead of staying stuck, she leaned into a morning meditation that uses bilateral beats to promote clarity, focus, and prosperity. Beth candidly walks us through how this daily ritual became a turning point, opening unexpected doors in both her personal and professional life. She reflects on the sneaky ways scarcity mentality can creep in, even after success, and how she's learning to celebrate wins without guilt. This episode isn't as much about meditation, as it's about reclaiming your mindset, and making space for the abundance waiting to find you. With vulnerability, honesty, and a bit of disbelief at how quickly things shifted, Beth invites you to explore your own journey toward a more abundant life. Let's dive in!

Send us a textBurnout doesn't discriminate—it affects everyone from CEOs to stay-at-home parents. When juggling family commitments, career demands, social connections, and personal aspirations becomes overwhelming, our bodies and minds send clear distress signals. Recognizing these warning signs—persistent fatigue, increasing irritability, motivation loss, and disconnection—is your first defense against spiraling deeper into burnout. This focused guide delivers exactly what busy, overwhelmed people need: simple, actionable strategies that take minimal time but yield maximum relief. The 4-4-4 breathing technique offers an immediate reset for your overwhelmed nervous system, lowering your heart rate and activating your body's natural relaxation response in just 12 seconds. Establishing clear boundaries—like our household's "no screens after 9:30 pm" rule—creates protected space for recovery and rejuvenation. The daily gratitude practice we've implemented at breakfast has transformed our mental focus from what's depleting to what's nourishing.Movement breaks throughout your day, quality sleep practices, strategic delegation, and periodic digital detoxes all contribute to a more sustainable daily rhythm. But perhaps the most powerful tool in your anti-burnout arsenal is reclaiming your right to say "no." Each decline to what doesn't serve your wellbeing becomes an affirmative choice toward what truly matters. These aren't complex life overhauls—they're small, consistent choices that gradually transform exhaustion into energy and overwhelm into optimism. Ready to make these shifts in your own life? The Daily Practice is a set of two techniques -- a specific form of writing, followed by a simple meditation, that I was shown 31 years ago when I was in extreme distress after a series of traumas, and was barely able to function. I teach the techniques in a free online course (you can register for it and learn it in less than an hour -- the link is below), and I lead regular free Zoom calls for people who have learned the techniques to try them with me and others, and then I take questions. This video is a recorded call so you can see what it's like. If you'd like to try, it take the free course so you know the techniques (there's a PDF in the course that summarizes it and you can use this to follow along during the call.
