This episode emerged from a Zoom call I shared with today's guest which he was gracious enough to allow me to record and share. The episode is as simple as that: a recorded chat in which we catch up and then start to talk about a question I raised: what would you do if you had a new player to add to your existing roleplaying group? My conversation is with Johnn Four, the founder of RoleplayingTips.com which began as a GM tips newsletter back in the late 1990s. Johnn is perhaps best known for the 5 Room Dungeon, even though throughout the years, Johnn has published a GM advice column in Dragon Magazine, several books about how to improve your GMing, and continues to write on the topic of running better games. Big thanks to Johnn for allowing me to share this largely unedited conversation!Game on!Role Playing Tips for Tabletop Game Masters: roleplayingtips.com/ OR https://www.roleplayingtips.com/Roleplay Rescue Details:Voice Message:speakpipe.com/roleplayrescuePatreon:patreon.com/rpgrescue Email:roleplayrescue@pm.meBlogroleplayrescue.com Bluesky Social:https://bsky.app/profile/ubiquitousrat.bsky.socialMeWe:https://mewe.com/p/roleplayrescueRoleplay Rescue Theme by Jon Cohen from Tale of the Manticore:https://taleofthemanticore.podbean.com/Logo and artwork by MJ Hiblen:https://www.patreon.com/MJHiblenART/ Hosted on Acast. On this remastered episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Johnn Fourr joins us to talk about creating the ultimate dungeon crawl experience in your RPG adventures! Are you tired of running the same old dungeons that feel repetitive and lackluster? Look no further, because we have the perfect solution for you – the 5-room dungeon. In this post, we will delve into the key elements of a 5-room dungeon and show you how to use them to craft an epic and engaging adventure for your players. So grab your dice and let's explore the world of 5-room dungeons together! Summary 5-room dungeons are a popular concept in tabletop role-playing games, first introduced by Johnn Fourr in his blog "Roleplaying Tips." They are a simple yet effective tool for dungeon design that can be applied to any genre or setting. In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Johnn Four joins us to discuss what a 5-room dungeon is and how it can enhance your storytelling in your RPG games. A 5-room dungeon is exactly what it sounds like - a dungeon made up of five rooms. However, it is much more than that. It is a framework for crafting a compelling and dynamic story within the constraints of a dungeon. Each room represents a key element of a traditional story, including the introduction, conflict, twist, climax, and resolution. By utilizing this structure, GMs are able to create engaging and well-paced adventures that go beyond the standard dungeon crawl. While the 5-room dungeon is a useful tool for GMs, it is also a flexible one. The concept can be adapted and expanded to suit different playstyles and preferences. For example, some GMs may prefer a 7-room dungeon to allow for more complex storytelling, while others may use a 3-room dungeon for shorter adventures. In addition to its versatility, the 5-room dungeon is also a valuable resource for session planning. By breaking down the story into five key elements, GMs can easily plan out each room and ensure a well-paced and engaging experience for the players. 5-room dungeons are a fantastic tool for GMs looking to enhance their storytelling in RPGs. By utilizing this structure and its five key elements, GMs can create compelling and dynamic adventures that keep players engaged from start to finish. So next time you're planning a dungeon crawl, consider using the 5-room dungeon framework for an immersive and memorable experience. Today is the first of two extended conversations I've shared with some gaming luminaries over the course of a week focused on answering some practical questions around the barriers I have long experienced in running consistent campaigns. These conversations were largely unplanned and are really just that - hopping online to talk and discuss some key ideas with my guest. The first conversation was with Johnn Four, the founder of RoleplayingTips.com which began as a GM tips newsletter. Throughout the years, Johnn has published a GM advice column in Dragon Magazine, several books about how to improve your GMing, and continues to write on the topic of running better games. Johnn is perhaps best known for the 5 Room Dungeon and this was where we began our conversation… although we moved deeply on and, by the end of the conversation, Johnn helped me to unlock my own confidence in preparing a new fantasy campaign.Big thanks to Johnn for joining us!
Richard and Nate reach deep into their knowledge of 1980's horror movies to create a one shot using Johnn Four's excellent 5-Room Dungeon method. Nate wanted to make a nice, simple D&D dungeon but nooOOOooo, Richard had to go and prove the method works outside its intended genre like some kind of jerk. Check out the 5-Room Dungeon method for yourself - it's an incredible tool for the busy DM: https://www.roleplayingtips.com/5-room-dungeons/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Part two of our two-part lesson on dungeon design! On this lesson of Detentions and Dragons, Josh and Matt design a five room dungeon based off the dungeon theme from lesson # 114. Five rooms sounds small. But if constructed well, any DM can run a rich and complete narrative! If you are interested in learning more about five room dungeon design, check out Johnn Four and his guide for five room dungeons at the following website: https://www.roleplayingtips.com/5-room-dungeons/ Did these two teachers help inspire you to make new and exciting dungeons using the power of tables?!
