Send us a textWhat happens when we no longer consume scarce information through trusted, verified institutions, but instead through an abundance of unbundled content without context or curation? John Green, rising star in political science from Duke University, takes us on a tour of the rapidly evolving  landscape of political information.Green challenges conventional wisdom about how ideologies function, arguing they're not so much coherent philosophical systems as they are socially shared belief networks. In these networks, most people specialize in just one or two issues they deeply care about, while adopting their coalition's positions on everything else. This creates an environment where signaling group loyalty becomes crucial—explaining why people sometimes make outrageous claims not despite their falsity, but precisely because the willingness to say something costly signals authentic commitment. The conversation takes an illuminating turn when Green unpacks his groundbreaking research on "curation bubbles." Unlike echo chambers or filter bubbles, these environments emerge when people strategically share content based on its utility for their side, regardless of source. A conservative might enthusiastically share a New York Times article criticizing Democrats, while generally dismissing the publication as biased. This selective curation creates information environments that are neither completely closed nor genuinely diverse.Perhaps most troubling is Green's insight about misinformation in the digital age. The real danger isn't simply false claims from unreliable sources, but rather the strategic repurposing of true information to create misleading narratives. When accurate statistics or facts are stripped of context and woven into deceptive frameworks, traditional fact-checking approaches fall short. As we navigate this unbundled media landscape, the question remains: can we rebuild institutions that verify and curate information effectively? The answer may determine the future of our shared reality and democratic discourse.Jon Green at Duke"Curation Bubbles" in APSRConverse on Belief SystemsMunger on "Direction of Causation"Letter Response:Sweden is NOT socialist!  (If you don't believe me, believe Andreas Bergh...)Book'o'da Month:  Alexander Kirshner, Legitimate Opposition, 2022, Yale University Press.  ISBN:  9780300243468. https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300243468/legitimate-opposition/Excellent podcast with Kirshner on the book. If you have questions or comments, or want to suggest a future topic, email the show at taitc.email@gmail.com ! Tell us about your early career, did you start in security or as a technologist? What are the key priorities for someone with a CTO title?  As someone who has held both CTO and CSO titles, how does the pressure to deliver revenue impacting products differ from the pressure cyber leaders face? What does it feel like to be on the receiving end of security requirements which are often developed in the abstract or for the general case? When you are assessing future trends and technology shifts, what are the different lenses you use to make the security evaluation vs the more functional and integration-oriented evaluation? What is something you have learned which surprised you?  What do you wish other CSOs understood better?  What is a piece of advice… You've been involved in Defcon and other cyber events for many years, what changes have you seen during that time? Y'all be good now!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Droney over Zoom video!Patrick Droney grew up in the era of dedication lines and VHS tapes. He survives on sentimentality. It hits him every time he hears Delilah on the radio or passes by the Blockbuster sign near the bodega on his corner. The Brooklyn and Nashville based artist/producer/guitar sensation returns with his sophomore album, SUBTITLES FOR FEELINGS, which explores the idea that each frame of life holds a deeper context—a subtitle meant to be translated in time.Written and co-produced by Patrick Droney with collaborators including Foy Vance, Butch Walker, Jon Green, and Lori McKenna, the songs are a deepening of his timeless, cinematic pop sound. Rewind to May 2021, when Droney released his debut album, STATE OF THE HEART. With streams now in the hundreds of millions, the project was his own coming of age film, offering striking snapshots of the human condition in songs like “Glitter” and “The Wire.”Since then, he has toured extensively, selling out shows across the U.S. and making his U.K. debut with the Eagles at London's Hyde Park. He performed at Super Bowl LVII, claims alumni status at Late Night With Seth Meyers, The Kelly Clarkson Show, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and has shared stages with Sheryl Crow, The Vamps, and more. He also released genre-bending collaborations with Kygo (“Say You Will”) and Billy F. Gibbons (“Rough Boy”).We want to hear from you! Riding Shotgun With Charlie #180 The DCP Gals & GOAL    On August 27, Gun Owners Action League hosted an event called The 2A Freedom Celebration. They pulled in some names you've seen on RSWC. Amanda Suffecool (#009), Holly Sullivan (#036), Jared Yanis (#051). And some locals like Toby Leary, (#143) Kerrie Ann Auclair (#139). We were able to film a show with a few of the local DCP gals, Moe Palmer & Bonnie Marshall. Mike Harris, Director of Public Policy, also joined us. Yeah… it was a car full of teal shirts!   There were several folks that sent some love GOAL's way. Todd Eccles from Patriot Defense Podcast, Nikki Goeser, Michael Sodini, David Coy, Klint Macro, John Petrolino, and the closing video was Cam Edwards. Of course Jim Wallace spoke, Jon Green (#030 & #034), Mike & Angi gave away a couple rifles. And Garet & Jeff from the GOAL Podcast (#177) were there as well. It was really a great time. Lots of fun catching up with everyone. I've said for a long time, these kinds of events are family get-togethers.    We gave everyone the hot shotgun seat for today's show. Starting with Kerrie Ann, she doesn't get into Boston often so she was excited to see so much. We talked about the Gun Law Listening Tour and how it turned into HD.4420. But she talked about going to one of the stops and speaking with a woman who said she knew she would be dead if she tried to use a gun against her domestic abuser. Kerrie Ann helped her re-think if she had a gun and some training, the gun could have been an equalizer.    Mike Harris talked about his time working in the State House in Boston and learning the ropes there. But he also acted as a tour guide. He does know a bit of Boston history and how to get around BeanTown.    Holly Sullivan took the next spotlight. She brought up that the GOAL event is the kind of event where the states need to get together and have a conversation about what is working and what isn't. This is one of the things she really wants to work on and connect state groups so we can be just as organized as the antis.    Bonnie Marshall has only been shooting for a few years. She's become a Range Safety Officer and started helping Kerrie Ann with her other group, The Well Armed Woman. It was great to have Bonnie break out of her shell and join us for the fun adventure.    Moe Palmer is also a local Quincy MA gal. She's also an RSO working with some local instructors to run the shooting line at live fire courses. Moe reached out to me a few years ago.  We took a road trip to SIG Academy in 2022 when they opened. She's also a regular on the Patriot Defense Podcast with Todd Eccles.    And our closer is Amanda Suffecool. DC Project Advisor. NRA BOD member. Host of Eye On The Target Radio. Instructor. And my conscience. Amanda was great at the event. She talked about how GOAL is winning even though it feels like we may not be all the time. She had a busy week. She was in Nashville on Monday with the DCP. She met with Shelley Hill from The Complete Combatant in Georgia. Then she headed to Boston for the weekend. The following week, she headed to Dallas for NRA BOD meetings.    We stopped for selfies, got sidetracked, and saw some sights in Boston. Like Cheers, The Granary Burial Ground, The Old State House & where the Boston Massacre started. Kenmore Square and drove next to Fenway Park, followed by going down Boylston Street, where the Marathon bombings happened and finally up Newbury Street.    Yeah…it was an undertaking editing this beast with 6 cameras all together. Some of the batteries ran out, but we did the best we could. This is a long show, the longest I've done. But I wanted everyone to get some time Riding Shotgun.    Favorite quotes:  Kerrie Ann: “If you had a gun it creates an equalizer for someone that's 5'1”.” Mike: “The unintended consequences of that (covid) a lot of people were more activated so it's easier to get people focused on this bill (HD.4420)” Holly: “In such tiny states in New England, non-resident permits make life accessible.”  Bonnie: “It's a bunch of like minded people, really fun.” Moe: “I didn't know there was a community out there. I didn't realize it was a passion.” Amanda: “It's great when your life comes together and you have a mission that will make a difference and leave a legacy.”   The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/   Gun Owners Action League https://goal.org/   Connecticut Citizens Defense League https://www.ccdl.us/   Eye On The Target Radio https://eyeonthetargetradio.com/   Sisters In Arms- A Firearms Story https://www.youtube.com/@SIA-AFirearmStory   Armed Women of America https://armedwomen.org/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun   Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC

This week's guest is Dani Aragon. She is a U.S. 800m and 1500m specialist who was a star at Notre Dame, a U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, an amazing human and so much more. At the beginning of the episode, you'll get a cameo from her current roommate and former Irish teammate Molly Seidel + coach Jon Green. In this episode, you'll hear a bit about what it's like being a pro runner at a training camp. She trains under coach John Trautmann and Tommy Nohilly with Empire Elite. The reason why I wanted to bring Dani on the podcast is that her post-collegiate career has been one with trials and tribulations. She had her stint with injuries but persevered through it all due to her self-belief. Hopefully, this can resonate with other athletes as a lesson in developing your confidence in the midst of intense training. ▶ Follow Dana: Twitter | Instagram | Tiktok ▶ Follow Dani: Twitter | Instagram | SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Kyoku is a creamy and delicious breakfast shake that uses 16 superfoods to fill you up without feeling too full. Harris Creek Baptist Church

Where do you find community: work, fitness, sports, kids activities, church…where is it for you? What characteristics mark that group of people? As we continue our series, Life Together, Jon Green teaches through 2 Timothy 3:14-17, teaching our second building block of community: biblical.KEY TAKEAWAYS-All Scripture is God-breathed.-Theology simply means “what you believe about God”.-Does everyone in your life group elevate Scripture in the same way?-Every time you read Scripture, ask God, “What do you want me to learn today?”-Observation: What do I see?-Interpretation: What does it mean?-Application: How does it work? What do I do?-All Scripture is useful.-Are you teaching each other using Scripture?-Rebuking: calling or pointing out sin based on Scripture. Correcting: giving a solution based on Scripture.-Training in righteousness can look like processing decisions based on Scripture (“Hey group, I'm thinking about _____, what do you guys think God and Scripture would have me do?”) vs. reporting decisions after the fact (“Hey guys, FYI, last week I did _____.”)-You can get well-intentioned yet horrific advice. If advice doesn't align with Scripture, it's bad advice.-In general, the more you want something the less you should trust yourself. -All Scripture prepares us.-If you think your knowledge of Scripture is for you, you have missed the point. The goal it to take what you learn and build up other people around you.-You will be a better disciple of Jesus if the people around you are reading their Bibles.-It will take time and effort to learn the Bible better, and that is OK. Start where you are today, and commit to growing 24-hours at a time.-When people in your group give counsel ask them to back it up with Scripture.-If you want to grow in your consistency of reading the Bible, you need three things: a time, a place, and a plan.MENTIONED OR RECOMMENDED RESOURCES-Suggested Scripture study: 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Proverbs 11:14-Sermon: Authentic Community-Resource: Bible Reading Plan (www.biblereadingplan.org)

"If you're not having fun with it, I think you're going to look back in a few years once you retire and be like, ‘You know what, maybe I didn't handle it the right way. I was too serious with it.' You can have fun with it, enjoy it and still do well. Everybody was talking about how Molly wasn't taking it seriously – No. We were taking it super seriously in Sapporo and Tokyo in everything we were doing. Having fun is also super important and I think that improves their performance at the end of the day. People can look at it and be like, ‘Oh they're joking around and having fun.' But yeah, we joke around, we have fun but we perform, which is what matters at the end of the day.” Jon Green is a former All-American from Georgetown who ran professionally for a brief time after college but now he's most known for his coaching credentials. At 27 years old, he's coached someone to an Olympic team and an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo. That someone is Molly Seidel, who used to be his teammate but then they teamed up together in October 2019 and it's been history ever since. Jon was the coach for Mary Cain's professional women's running team in New York City called Atalanta NYC but just recently passed the torch to Julia Lucas since he's decided to move to Flagstaff, Arizona to coach Molly and former Bowerman Track Club runner and 10K world championship bronze medalist Emily Infeld. His squad is going by Verde Track Club – a super creative name. In this episode, hear more about his plans for the team and his coaching offerings for everyone from post-collegiate runners to everyday joggers like me or possibly you. We also touched on how Jon keeps everything fun and that's at the heart of Verde Track Club's ethos. In this episode you'll hear from 13 people whose experiences, insight, and/or advice stood out to me: Alexi Pappas (0:03:25), Craig Curley (0:10:51), Dinée Dorame (0:19:31), Nathan Martin (0:27:21), Keith Kelly (0:32:30), Jorge Maravilla and Stephanie Howe (0:42:08), Mark Coogan (0:51:16), Christine Gould (0:59:31), Alison Mariella Désir (1:05:56), Jon Green (1:14:07), George Hirsch (1:22:53), Alex Varner (1:32:05). I hope these conversations help you see what's possible for yourself through the lens of running. This episode is brought to you by:— Recover Athletics.
