We honor the work of Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away this week at age 76. Andrew and Dominique give Ozzy his flowers for being a much greater singer, performer and ambassador for rock and heavy metal music than people realize. We talk about the grim circumstances that led to Ozzy co-founding Black Sabbath with Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, and we consider how Satanic panic unwittingly fueled the band's rise in the ‘70s. We stop down on some highlights from Ozzy's incredible solo career and consider how music history would have been different had his widow and longtime manager Sharon Osbourne not entered the picture. Also, we consider how perfectly Ozzy exited, from his revelatory final performance in Birmingham, raising $200 million for charity, and seeing all of his friends one last time.Tell us about your first listen @AtFirstListenpodcast on Instagram!Subscribe so you don't miss an episode!(Episode 38.)

Geezer and I have crossed paths in rugby circles in almost every capacity as players, coaches, on the same team and on opposite sides. Now I have been retired for some time, it is with great clarity that I can say that Mike is the best coach I ever had - a superb mixture of incredibly detailed technical appreciation, motivational skills and the ability to create a culture that bred excellence are just some of the reasons why I rate him so highly. This interview was recorded in August of 2019 and we had an in-depth chat about the achievements and challenges for USA rugby - both the 7's and the 15-a-side version of the game. We got into coaching philosophies and Mike shared some genuine coaching knowledge-bombs. If you are a young or new coach then there is some seriously good advice in this episode for you. And lastly, we talked about Mike's amateur club - Bromley RFC where three generations of the family Friday are still involved. Brent Rivard had a long, successful career in advertising, working for major ad agencies in New York and Toronto. But as he entered his 50s, Brent faced an industry that is focused on youth in both it's work and it's staffing. The average age of an individual working in advertising is just 29 years old. Teamed with two advertising executives also in their early 50s, he is in the process of building a groundbreaking agency called “Geezer.” The new company is different from traditional agencies in two major ways: Geezer is focused on serving the 50+ market (the most lucrative segment of the population); The agency is staffed by seasoned veterans – all with 25+ years of experience in the advertising profession. According to Brent, “Ageism is a big problem in the advertising agency world and we need to do something about it.” Click here to learn more about Geezer and their unique approach to advertising.

Welcome to a special episode of Deep Dive into The Never Normal, a Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization special no-nonsense series that unpacks the future of work, leadership, and life in an era of relentless disruption. This episode features highlights from cutting-edge insights by future or work thought leaders Josh Drean, who declares that "Employment is Dead," and John Sanei, author of the upcoming book Future Memories, who explores why we must unlearn everything we know to embrace an uncertain future. I also introduce the latest research from McKinsey's ‘Developing a Resilient, Adaptable Workforce for an Uncertain Future,' revealing why only 23% of employees feel prepared for what's next—and why only 16% of organizations are doing something about it! Something needs to change. In the full episodes (links below), you can listen or watch as Josh and Sanei dive into tough questions like this: Are traditional employment models obsolete? How can leaders build psychological safety in a world that never stops changing? And what happens when innovation isn't enough, and disruption is the only way forward? Listen to John Sanei: https://sites.libsyn.com/82008/ggg-010925-john-sanei Listen to Josh Drean: https://sites.libsyn.com/82008/employment-is-dead-the-future-of-work-is-calling-are-you-answering Read McKinsey article: https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/developing-a-resilient-adaptable-workforce-for-an-uncertain-future
The future is here, and it's weirder than you think. In this episode of Geeks, Geezers, and Googlization, we're tearing down the illusions of certainty and exposing the brutal reality of exponential change with global futurist and author John Sanei. AI, blockchain, quantum computing—if you have time to catch up, think again. Our obsession with efficiency and outdated thinking is dragging us down, while the future demands adaptability, experimentation, and a whole new way of leading. It's time to unlearn everything you thought you knew, ditch the fear, and start shaping what's next—before it shapes you. No fluff. No hand-holding. Just raw, unfiltered insights to help you stay relevant in a world evolving at breakneck speed. Key Insights: - The Challenge of Adapting to Exponential Change "Our educational system over the last 200 years has prioritized efficiency and repetition over any sort of adaptability and experimentation." - The Importance of Unlearning and Cultivating Adaptability: "The only thing that we're hearing is that AI is coming to eat our lunch right before our eyes. So we're a little bit petrified by that." - The Power of Future Memories: “Neuroscience is proving to us that we have between 60 to 70,000 thoughts a day and our brains have calcified into a personality trait and personality type by the time we're 35 years old." On this episode of Afterhocks TV, hosts Matt and Chris dive deep into the legendary career of Geezer Butler, the iconic bassist best known for his work with Black Sabbath. They focus particularly on his 1995 debut album with his solo project GZR, Plastic Planet. The album, which blends heavy metal with industrial and electronic elements, is often regarded as an underrated gem of the 90s. Matt and Chris explore the unique lineup of the band at the time, which included ex-Fear Factory vocalist Burton C. Bell, whose distinct voice added a powerful dimension to the album's sound. Alongside them was the incredibly talented drummer Deen Castronovo, who would later go on to play in bands like Journey and Bad English, but here demonstrates his hard-hitting, dynamic style. The episode delves into the creative process behind Plastic Planet, which was shaped by the collaboration of these incredible musicians and Geezer Butler's own vision. The album's blend of heavy riffs, industrial noise, and darker lyrical themes stands in stark contrast to much of the music being produced in the mid-90s, making it an important and often overlooked release for metal fans. Matt and Chris discuss how Plastic Planet captures a different side of Geezer Butler, one that moves away from the traditional Black Sabbath sound and embraces a more modern, experimental approach. They highlight standout tracks, the album's atmosphere, and the innovative production choices that helped the album resonate within the metal community—despite not receiving mainstream attention. Whether you're a longtime Black Sabbath fan or a newer listener to Butler's solo work, this episode is a great deep dive into a forgotten classic that has only grown in significance over time. *NOTE: Everything said here, and on every episode of all of our shows are 100% the opinions of the hosts.
