Epidemia wirusa SARS-CoV-2 jaka spotkała cywilizację ogromnie komplikuje życie zarówno na poziomie osobistym jak i społecznym. Jednak obecne wydarzenia motywują lub przyspieszają tworzenie lub zastosowanie dotychczas niewykorzystywanych technologicznych nisz. Społeczność (ale też i firmy) zajmująca się drukiem 3D w obliczu ogromnych braków w sprzęcie medycznym wzięła sprawy w swoje ręce. Jednym z lepszych przykładów jest projekt maski ochronnej, który momentalnie został wdrożony nie tyle co do produkcji, ale wręcz do zastosowaniach w faktycznym życiu jednostek medycznych. Za jedną z takich inicjatyw (Zielona Góra) stoi Łukasz Więcek (Fundację "Fabryka Pasji”), który za pomocą farmy drukarek (8 sztuk) pragnie dostarczyć 1200 masek dla Szpitalnego Oddziału Ratunkowego w Zielonej Górze. Obecnie druk trwa 2-2,5 godziny, a dostarczenie całej serii przyłbic powinno zająć miesiąc. Cały pomysł wraz z modelami bazuje na projekcie Josef Prusa, założyciel Prusa Research. Prusa stworzył jedną z najpopularniejszych i jedną z lepszych destopowych drukarek 3D w technologii FDM. Zespół Josefa, wpierany przez Szpital Uniwersytecki z Pragi, wykonał szereg prototypów (w 3 dni) oraz stworzył wersji maski ochronnej (obecnie są to dwie wersje RC1 i RC2), która uzyskała aprobatę czeskiego Ministra Zdrowia. W Polsce produkt nie ma certyfikatów, jednak środki ochrony osobistej nie muszą być jałowe. Oczywiście potrzebne elementy można wydrukować praktycznie na dowolnej drukarce 3D, w skład zestawu wchodzą: - dwa drukowane element: górny (główny) i dolny - polecany materiał to PET-G, - osłona przednia do wycięcia z plastiki PET (grubość 0.5-1 mm). Można też zastosować 2 litrową butelkę, - materiałowa gumka. Po przygotowaniu potrzebnego zestawu należy go jak najszybciej spakować, tak by wykorzystać m.in. zaletę druku 3D, czyli wysoką temperaturę, która „sterylizuje” drukowane części. Cena oscyluje w okolicy jednego dolara za sztukę. #DrukarzeDlaSzpitali to polska inicjatywa, która ma wspomóc placówki medyczne z coraz większym zapotrzebowanie, na sprzęt ochronny. Cała idea opiera się o zasadę non-profit i skupia wolontariuszy, producentów i dostawców materiałów eksploatacyjnych oraz twórców modeli. Dotychczas druk 3D właściwie ograniczony był tyko do prototypownia.
