Ci parla Don Stefano Buttinoni, a.k.a.

#288 Why Great Companies Lose Their Way After Going Public with Eric Ries, Author, The Lean Startup

.entry-img img{ display:none !important; } .single .hentry .entry-img{ display:none !important; } https://open.spotify.com/episode/3cW4LImOlr2eDc6opOmyPp Going public is often seen as the ultimate milestone for a successful business, yet for many great companies it marks the beginning of decline rather than a new chapter of sustainable growth. In this episode of The Grow CFO Show, host Kevin Appleby sits down with Eric Ries, author of The Lean Startup, to explore why so many mission-driven, high-performing companies lose their way after an IPO – and what CFOs and boards can do differently to prevent this fate. The conversation frames governance not as a legal box-ticking exercise, but as a strategic discipline that protects long‑term value, mission, and trust. Through vivid case studies – from Saul Price and the origins of Costco, to Novo Nordisk and its foundation structure, to Johnson & Johnson's Credo – Eric shows how governance choices can either entrench short‑term shareholder primacy or build what he calls a “governance fortress” that shields companies from destructive external pressures. He argues that CFOs are uniquely placed to champion this new governance, redefine profit around human flourishing, and ensure the organization can't make money except by achieving its mission. The result is a powerful toolkit for finance leaders who want to keep their companies “incorruptible” long after they hit the public markets. About Eric Ries Over the last two decades, Eric Ries's ideas about continuous innovation, long-term thinking, governance, and market reform have reshaped company building and management practices. He is the creator of the Lean Startup method, and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Lean Startup; The Leader's Guide; and The Startup Way.  As a founder, he has put his own ideas into practice with The Long-Term Stock Exchange (LTSE); Answer.AI, an AI R&D lab; Virgil, a legal services startup; and IMVU. On The Eric Ries Show, he talks with world-class technologists, thought leaders, and executives building for the long-term. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and three children. Key topics covered: Why good companies lose control and drift after going public. FedMart and Costco: how governance protects long‑term value. “Governance fortress” structures that resist short‑term investor pressure. Novo Nordisk: mission‑driven governance leading to massive value creation. Why most M&A destroys value and how CFOs should filter deals. Redefining profit around human flourishing and the CFO's new role. Clann Credo was established by the Presentation Order of nuns in 1996. While social finance was a well-established concept in America and Europe, there was nothing like it in Ireland. After a successful pilot project, the Presentation nuns put €1m seed capital into a social investment fund. Other religious charities chipped in, and now Clann Credo also borrows money from the Social Finance Foundation, a wholesale fund set up by the government.Clann Credo accelerates positive community impact by making flexible and fair lending accessible to every community in Ireland. Their vision is a society where every community has the opportunity to drive positive impact for all. They believe in the power and passion of community volunteers to shape society for the better for all. For their part, they do everything they can to accelerate positive community impact.Mary Lawlor is the Chief Executive Officer at Clann Credo, and under her leadership, it continues to strengthen its position as a thought leader in impact lending, expanding access to fair, flexible lending for community and social enterprises across Ireland. Mary also developed the Dynamic Funding Model for Social finance which the government has now adopted themselves. Before joining Clann Credo in 2021, Mary served as Chief Executive of Carlow County Development Partnership from 2009 and previously as Chief Executive Officer of Carlow LEADER Rural Development Company Ltd for seven years, working directly with communities to translate ambition into tangible economic and social progress. This is the 79th episode in the Davy podcast series ‘Everyday Business with Aidan Donnelly' with special guest Mary Lawlor, CEO at Clann Credo.

A Quick Note to Listeners: Before this week’s interview, Will Parker and Jen Schwanke take some time to answer a listener question. This week’s question is: I've been leading short-handed with an Assistant Principal on leave and without the kind of support I've wanted from my central office. Any advice for wrapping up a school year strong when I'm feeling tired and discouraged? Listen in to hear their response! Meet Chris Jochum: Dr. Chris Jochum is the founder and CEO of CJ Leadership Solutions. He is a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and coach who believes leadership is about influence, not titles. Chris works with organizations across the U.S. and abroad to strengthen culture, climate, and leadership at every level. He also serves as Professor and Chair of Teacher Education at Fort Hays State University, leading a large teacher preparation program. Over nearly three decades in education, he has worked in K-12 and higher education, beginning his career teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language in public schools, and later holding faculty roles at the University of Central Missouri and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Chris's research centers on leadership development and the value of study abroad. He hosts The Department Chair Leadership Podcast and is the author of The Department Chair: A Practical Guide to Effective Leadership, and You Don't Have to Leave to Lead: A Practical Guide to Teacher Leadership. The Foundation of Teacher Leadership: Dr. Jochum emphasizes that every school is a reservoir of untapped potential, akin to a diamond mine waiting to be discovered. He shares a compelling analogy about an African farmer who searched far and wide for diamonds, unaware that his own land was rich with them. Similarly, schools possess hidden leadership capabilities among their educators. By creating an environment that encourages teachers to step into leadership roles, schools can increase student achievement and improve faculty morale. Inviting Teachers into Leadership: Will Parker recounts a conversation with a principal who, despite his best intentions, had not actively invited teachers to participate in leadership discussions. This highlights a common issue where leaders may feel protective of their staff, inadvertently excluding them from decision-making processes. Dr. Jochum stresses that inviting teachers into these discussions can unlock their potential, allowing them to contribute to school improvement in meaningful ways. Practical Strategies for Identifying and Supporting Teacher Leaders: Dr. Jochum outlines several key strategies for identifying and nurturing teacher leaders: Model Leadership: Leaders should demonstrate the behaviors they wish to see in their teachers. By modeling effective leadership, principals can set a standard for their staff. Share the Vision: Clearly communicate the importance of empowering teachers and encourage them to take ownership of their roles in leadership. Provide Support: Acknowledge that not everyone will be on board with new initiatives, but encourage open dialogue and support among staff. Insights from Future Educators: Dr. Jochum also sheds light on the perspectives of current education students, emphasizing the importance of communication between teachers and their leaders. He advises principals to foster an environment where new teachers feel comfortable expressing their challenges and uncertainties. By reassuring them that making mistakes is part of the learning process, leaders can create a more supportive atmosphere. The Credo for Teacher Leaders: One of the highlights of the discussion is Dr. Yokum's “Credo for Teacher Leaders,” which outlines essential beliefs and commitments for effective leadership: It's not about me, but it starts with me. I must give up to go up. I'm in the people business, and people are messy. Other people's irresponsibility will oftentimes become my responsibility. I will never have a perfect group of people, and they will never have a perfect leader. I must be vulnerable. Conflict happens every day, and that's okay. Relationships and influence are not optional. These principles serve as guiding values for educators stepping into leadership roles, fostering a culture of collaboration and understanding. After undergoing successful surgery, she made it her mission to create safer, transparent skincare and to educate consumers on ingredient awareness. What started as formulations she created in her own kitchen quickly evolved into a full line of products known for being clean, cruelty-free, and rooted in both nature and science. Andrew Feldmar has been guiding people through psychedelic journeys for over 50 years. He trained directly with R.D. Laing in London, worked with Stanislav Grof at Esalen, practiced at Hollywood Hospital when LSD was still legal medicine, and took part in the first MAPS Canada MDMA research for PTSD. A Hungarian-born psychotherapist who fled the 1956 revolution alone at 16, he has spent a lifetime refusing to pathologize normal human suffering. With the President signing an executive order to fast track psychedelics through the FDA, this conversation could not be more timely. Andrew explains why medicalizing these medicines is a grotesque category mistake, what gets lost when ceremony and relationship are replaced by sterile hospital protocols, and why the source only opens up between people. His new book, Radical Adventure: An Inquiry into Psychedelic Psychotherapy (Karnac Books, 2025), is a quiet act of resistance against the venture capital takeover of sacred work. If we're going to talk about psychedelics in 2026, we need to talk to someone who knew what they were before the industry came for them.

"We are a beauty store, and I think there's a tremendous impact that beauty products can have on someone's self-confidence and the way they feel about themselves that day. If we can put a smile on someone's face when they walk in our door, that's incredibly rewarding to me." —Annie Jackson   Clean beauty sounds good, but the labels are confusing and the claims are louder than the truth. We are surrounded by products that promise results without telling us what is inside. The real issue is not access, it is clarity. Annie Jackson, co-founder of Credo Beauty, shares how her journey from legacy beauty brands to building a clean beauty standard reshaped how products are made, vetted, and trusted. Press play to rethink what goes on our skin and why it matters: • Clean beauty standards and ingredient transparency • How to spot harmful chemicals in skincare • Why sustainability starts with packaging and sourcing • The rise of conscious consumers and Gen Z expectations • The challenge of building ethical beauty brands • What "better for you" really means in beauty Meet Annie: Annie Jackson is Co-Founder & CEO of Credo Beauty, a leading clean-beauty retailer she helped launch to bring high-performance, sustainably minded indie brands into mainstream retail. A beauty industry veteran, she began her career at Estée Lauder and was a founding team member at Sephora, experiences that shaped Credo's mission to prioritize ingredient transparency, safer formulations and sustainable packaging.  Under her leadership Credo has grown from a single Fillmore Street store to a national footprint, curating roughly 130 brands (the majority women-founded) and stewarding a rigorous Clean Standard and sustainability guidelines.  Annie is known for marrying retail expertise with a science-driven approach to product vetting and for championing accessibility and accountability in beauty. This week Jason brings you an interview he did with The Electronic Frontier Foundation's executive director Cindy Cohn, who recently announced she would be stepping down from the legendary digital rights nonprofit after decades of service. Cindy's new book “Privacy's Defender,” is a memoir of her work to protect Americans' privacy and fight government surveillance.Privacy's Defender weaves Cindy's life story through three incredibly important court cases. Rather than being a dry recounting of three complicated and technical cases, Cindy recounts her strategies in each case, the trials and tribulations she was going through during each period, and the stakes of each case. A quick backgrounder — the cases are Bernstein vs Department of Justice, decided in 1996, which established code and encryption as protected speech under the first amendment, a lasting decision that became critical in Apple's lawsuit against the FBI in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shooting. It also follows EFF's lawsuit against AT&T for building a secret backdoor in its internet data centers that gave data to the NSA for warrantless surveillance against American citizens, a case that was built in part around testimony and documents shared by Mark Klein, who showed schematics and design documents for secret surveillance rooms in AT&T's offices. And finally it follows the Alphabet Cases, which were lawsuits against FBI gag orders for national security letters, which are secret demands for customer information that came with gag orders against internet companies that prevented them from disclosing the fact that the FBI approached them for information. Those cases concerned both Cloudflare and a telecom company called CREDO, and went on for many years. Our interview with Cindy shows that the fight for privacy happens in fits and spurts, and is rarely linear. Imperativo Informale (Tu)Imperativo Formale (Lei)"Ascolta!""Ascolti!""Vieni qui!""Venga qui!""Dimmi!""Mi dica!""Siediti!""Si sieda!""Stai attento!""Stia attento!""Fa' presto!""Faccia presto!""Non parlare!""Non parli!""Non andare!""Non vada!" → MAI!
