EP #326 - Brave Action - An interview with author James Twyman Okay everybody you are in for an incredible experience in this episode of Empowering Chats. I am thrilled and so honored to welcome my guest, author James Twyman. His latest book is called, I Don't Know, Maybe, I Love You. James is not only an author but also an Episcopal Franciscan priest and a lifelong follower of St. Francis. Here is what he has to say about what he wrote, “This book is meant to be a pause button, an opportunity to hold still and look at the big picture, what we really want in our lives and in the world. Taking a collective deep breath may not solve all the complex problems we face, but it might be a first step toward finding a solution to the dark and elusive issues of our era.” James is calling people to step up, become de-polarizing agents and change the world one conversation at a time. He has a Credo he lives by, that goes something like this; “I don't care who you voted for –– come and walk with me. I don't care who you support –– come and serve with me, there is nothing you can say that's going to change the way I feel about you, so come and love with me.” James and I both agree that we can be much more effective when we realize we all come from the same place. A place of love with an understanding that we are all human. The question to ask ourselves, before entering into a divisive conflict or protest is; Are we coming together to be angry and prove our “rightness” or are we coming together peacefully because we want to unite and show we are here to listen and be open to solutions? James emphasizes the need to de-polarize, hence his motivation to start the “De-Polarizing” movement. His goal is to unite and to come back together so we can focus on a higher goal, one that unites rather than separates. In this episode, we share Part 2 of our coverage of The Black University & Community Currencies workshop (Click here for Part 1). Held April 25, 2025 on the campus of Morehouse College, the workshop fostered dialogue between students, faculty, and activists about the radical possibilities of public money for higher education, broadly, and for communities at and around Morehouse, specifically. The occasion for the workshop was the conclusion of a semester in which students enrolled in Professor Andrew Douglas's advanced political theory course at Morehouse implemented a classroom currency called the CREDO for use by Morehouse students. In practice the CREDO bears close resemblance to complementary currencies like the Benjamins at SUNY Cortland, the DVDs at Denison University, and the Buckaroos at University of Missouri, Kansas City. One significant aspect that sets the CREDO apart is that it is the first we know of to have been implemented at an Historically Black College or University. Another unique attribute of the experiment is that students were invited--and very capably answered the call--by their professor to reflect publicly on their experience as users, advocates, and critics of the currency at an HBCU. In the first half of this two-part episode, we hear directly from Isaac Dia, Elijah Qualls, John Greene, and Bruce Malveaux--students at Morehouse College and participants in Professor Douglas's advanced political theory course--about their experiences with the CREDO and its implications for the Black University concept. In the second half, we hear audio of the panel itself as it took place on April 25, 2025. Both halves of the episode reward close attention. Together they document a moment of substantial conceptual and political advance for public money theory and for the hermeneutics of provision.A very special thank you to Isaac, Elijah, John, Bruce, and all others who participated in the panel discussion and interview.

Featuring COA Youth & Mentors, with Rev. Stevie Carmody, Minister of Religious Education Worship service given June 1, 2025 Prayer by Rev. Erica Federspiel Richmond, Parish Minister https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 At First Parish, we honor the passage from childhood towards adulthood through our Coming of Age program. Our service will include Credo (“I Believe”) statements from the Coming of Age class as well as a blessing of the senior youth and a farewell to our Youth Program Coordinator Rose Sawyer-Marsh. And as another cohort passes through the “Arch of Love,” we celebrate all the people who have contributed to our multigenerational community. Offering and Giving First The Giving First program donates 50% of the non-pledge offering each month to a charitable organization that we feel is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles. The program began in November 2009, and First Parish has donated over $200,000 to more than 70 organizations. For June 2025, The Boston Alliance of LGBTQ+ Youth (BAGLY) will share half of the plate. For nearly 50 years, BAGLY has been a youth-led, adult-supported social support organization, committed to social justice and creating, sustaining, and advocating for programs, policies, and services for the LGBTQ+ youth community in Massachusetts. After serving over 200,000+ youth since 1980, BAGLY is recognized nationally for its pioneering role in creating, sustaining, and advocating for social support, leadership development, and health promotion programs for LGBTQ+ youth. The remaining half of your offering supports the life and work of this Parish. To donate using your smartphone, you may text “fpuu” to 73256. Then follow the directions in the texts you receive. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Welcome to a the new Knights of the Ledger Summit series from Stories from the River! This episode captures a presentation that podcast host and Broad River CEO Charlie Malouf gave at the 2nd Annual Knights Summit on March 26, 2025, in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Charlie begins by sharing insights into Broad River's growth journey over the last 20-plus years, focusing on past milestones and plans for the next year including Project Cascade, which aims to expand the company's geographical reach into the Inland Northwest in Spokane, Washington. Charlie discusses the four key areas of focus for 2025: driving revenue, continued innovation, operational efficiencies, and ensuring fortress security. He also discusses longer term future plans like the 2030 vision to grow to $500 Million. He emphasizes the importance of the pioneering spirit, encapsulated by the word "Pioneer," which was chosen as the company's 2025 word of the year. This encapsulates the aim to be innovative and exploratory in their endeavors. Charlie further engages the audience with thought-provoking exercises that demonstrate the power of compounding and investing in oneself. Through interactive dialogue, he illustrates the potential of small, consistent improvements leading to significant growth. This aligns with Broad River's philosophy, which values goal-setting and strategic planning to achieve long-term growth. Charlie reiterates the importance of Memory Makers in realizing these goals, noting that the company's success hinges on their growth and development. Overall, this episode serves as both an informative and a motivational session, aiming to prepare the finance department, fondly known as "Knights of the Ledger," for future challenges and opportunities. 21:24 "Nobody ever drifted to a destination they would have chosen." -Michael Hyatt 28:05 "If someone offered you a penny that doubles every day for 30 days or a million dollars today, which would you take?" 32:09 "If you improve by 1% every day, within a year you will have improved 365%. Think about that" 33:57 "When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split into two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before." - Jacom Riis The Stonecutter's Credo 34:27 "The best investment you will ever make is in yourself."
