Why are companies investing heavily in AI, analytics, and data platforms while business leaders still struggle to see what is happening across their operations quickly enough to make confident decisions? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Massimo Merlo, Vice President for UK, Iberia, and Italy at Elastic, about why the next stage of enterprise AI adoption will depend less on who deploys the most advanced models and more on which companies can give people and AI systems access to relevant, trusted, and secure information when decisions need to be made. Massimo describes the problem as a lack of decision-grade visibility. Most large companies are not short of data. They have spent decades building data platforms, analytics systems, dashboards, cloud infrastructure, and reporting tools. Yet information remains fragmented across departments and applications, insights arrive too late, and employees often struggle to find the small amount of information that matters among enormous volumes of data. The result is a growing gap between having information and being able to act on it. Massimo explains why simply adding an AI model to this environment does not solve the underlying problem. If an AI system is connected to fragmented, outdated, poorly governed, or irrelevant information, it can produce convincing answers without providing reliable business outcomes. The quality of an AI model matters, but the context available to that model increasingly determines whether AI becomes a useful business asset or an operational liability. This leads to one of the biggest technology conversations emerging around enterprise AI: context engineering. Massimo explains how context engineering provides AI systems with the relevant data, tools, permissions, organizational knowledge, and guardrails required to complete a task safely. Rather than sending ever-larger volumes of information to AI models, companies need infrastructure capable of retrieving the right information and making it available at the moment a person or software agent needs to act. Fraud detection provides a practical example. An AI agent evaluating a transaction needs more than access to a powerful model. It requires customer history, behavioral patterns, company risk thresholds, permissions, compliance requirements, and the ability to recognize activity that falls outside normal behavior. Without that context, the system could block legitimate customers or approve fraudulent transactions while presenting its decision with complete confidence. We also discuss why digitally mature companies can still struggle with real-time decision-making. Massimo shares lessons from Elastic's work with organizations including Reed, the Met Office, and Rightmove, explaining why having sophisticated technology systems does not automatically make a company context mature. Information can still remain trapped between applications, teams, and databases, preventing employees and AI agents from seeing the complete picture when it matters. The conversation challenges another long-standing enterprise technology habit: adding more dashboards. Massimo explains why dashboards often provide visibility into what has already happened without helping people decide what to do next. Companies can continue adding reporting layers while employees become overwhelmed by information and remain unable to identify the actions that will improve customer experience, productivity, security, or business performance. A healthcare example demonstrates what becomes possible when companies solve this problem. Massimo shares how CogStack at King's College Hospital brought together unstructured patient information during the COVID-19 pandemic and made it searchable using natural language processing. Clinicians could find relevant information without waiting for technical teams to build new queries or systems, helping medical professionals access information when patient decisions needed to be made. For CEOs, CIOs, CTOs, data leaders, and technology teams trying to improve AI ROI, Massimo offers practical advice on where to begin. Do not start with another model, tool, or dashboard. Start with a business decision or workflow that is currently too slow, unreliable, or difficult to execute. Identify what information that decision requires, where the data is stored, who or what system needs access to it, which permissions should apply, and where information currently becomes delayed or disconnected. That process can reveal the visibility gaps preventing companies from turning their existing data and AI investments into measurable results. We also examine why search and retrieval are becoming infrastructure concerns for companies introducing AI agents. As software agents begin making recommendations and taking actions across business systems, their performance will depend on whether they can securely retrieve relevant information at scale. For business and technology leaders facing pressure to demonstrate returns from AI investment, this conversation provides a practical framework for improving enterprise search, context engineering, AI agent reliability, real-time operational visibility, and decision-making. The companies that gain the greatest value from AI may not be those collecting the most data or deploying the most models. They will be the companies capable of finding what matters, understanding its context, and getting trusted information to people and AI systems quickly enough to act on it. That is where better visibility can become better decisions, stronger productivity, and business growth.

La cultura del Grigione italiano ha perso una delle sue voci più autorevoli. Si è spento a quasi 90 anni Massimo Lardi, scrittore, saggista, storico e docente nato a Le Prese in Valposchiavo nel 1936.Massimo Lardi ha dedicato l'intera esistenza allo studio e alla valorizzazione della storia, della lingua e dell'identità delle valli grigionesi italiane. Dopo il dottorato in Lettere, ha insegnato alla scuola secondaria di Poschiavo e alla Scuola magistrale cantonale di Coira. Per dieci anni ha diretto i Quaderni Grigioni Italiani, punto di riferimento per la cultura della Svizzera italiana.La sua produzione comprende romanzi storici, racconti, saggi, studi biografici, opere teatrali e traduzioni. Tra i titoli più noti: Dal Bernina al Naviglio (2002), Il barone De Bass (2009, tradotto anche in tedesco) e Don Francesco Rodolfo Mengozzi (2018). Nel 2017 il Cantone gli ha conferito il Premio grigionese per la letteratura.“È difficile fare più di quanto abbia fatto lui per difendere e promuovere la nostra lingua e cultura”, ricorda Franco Milani, presidente della Pro Grigioni Italiano, che annuncia un numero monografico dei Quaderni dedicato a Lardi nel 2026.Lo storico Andrea Paganini sottolinea: “La vera caratteristica di questo scrittore è il connubio tra letteratura e storia, la capacità di osservare la storia mondiale dal punto di vista locale della Valposchiavo”.Massimo Lardi lascia la moglie Vera e la famiglia. Il suo lascito culturale continuerà a illuminare le generazioni future.

Marco Aurelio, ogni mattina prima che il mondo entrasse, si sedeva a scrivere. A se stesso. In quei taccuini privati tornava sempre sulla stessa domanda: cosa dipende da me, e cosa no. Tra le cose che non dipendevano da lui c'erano quasi sempre gli altri. E ogni volta che si accorgeva di star misurando la propria vita in confronto a qualcuno, si rimetteva in carreggiata. Non era per nulla indifferente al mondo, ma aveva capito che il confronto con gli altri è spesso un modo elegante per non guardarsi. In questo episodio parto da lì, dall'abitudine di un imperatore, per arrivare a qualcosa di molto più vicino: il meccanismo che blocca le persone e sembra un ostacolo esterno, quando è uno sguardo. Lo sguardo fisso sull'altro, su dove è arrivato lui, su cosa ha già ottenuto lei, mentre la propria strada resta lì ad aspettare. Ti racconto di Massimo, ventotto anni, fuori corso da tre, con un fratello minore già laureato con lode. Massimo sembrava uno affetto da "rimandite", ma procrastinava perché ogni volta che apriva un libro, dentro non c'era un capitolo da studiare. C'era Luca, già arrivato, col riflettore dei genitori puntato addosso. In questo episodio parliamo di confronto sociale, del meccanismo descritto da Leon Festinger negli anni Cinquanta, e di cosa succede quando smette di darti informazioni e inizia a darti verdetti. Welcome, Massimo Banzi of SuperModerno and co-founder of Arduino Introduction and SuperModerno: Massimo introduces himself as a “friendly nerd” and discusses his new project, SuperModerno The project aims to explain the “behind the scenes” of technology to prevent people from becoming “slaves to the platform” The History of Technology: Massimo expresses his passion for technology’s history, emphasizing non-American innovators to show Europeans they can also lead in technology, citing the UK-based origins of the Arm processor The Legacy of Olivetti: He highlights Olivetti (founded in 1908), which moved from typewriters to creating the Programma 101, the first desktop computer used by NASA to compute orbits for the Apollo program Design as a Differentiator: Olivetti was the first tech company to apply design to everything (products, posters, and architecture) This inspired Massimo's concept of the “invisible touch”, the idea that consistent, intentional design creates a unique connection with users and gives a company a competitive edge The Interaction Design Institute Ivrea (IDII): Massimo’s path led him to IDII, located in the former Olivetti research building, where he transitioned from a two-week sabbatical to a four-year stay Learning by Making: To help students with no electronics background, Massimo drew on how he learned as a seven-year-old (“learning by making”) to remove the friction of interacting with technology The Founding Team: He met Tom Igoe (ITP) and David Cuartielles, and they realized students were afraid to be creative because they feared “blowing up” expensive tools like the Basic Stamp The “Pizza and a Beer” Price Point: Massimo aimed for a hardware cost of 20 Euros, roughly what a student would spend on a pizza and a beer, to encourage experimentation Building the Platform: Along with David Mellis, the team adapted Processing (a language for artists) by “surgically” replacing Java with C++ to create the Arduino IDE Ivrea Manufacturing: Leveraging the industrial base of Ivrea and Torino (the “Detroit of Italy”), Massimo was able to find local PCB manufacturers and assemblers just a short drive away From Hacking to AVR: Massimo's early work involved hacking satellite TV PIC chips for soccer fans, but mentor Bill Verplank encouraged him to use AVR microcontrollers because they could be programmed simply in C Enabling Creators: Massimo shares stories of how Arduino enabled others, such as Josef Prusa, who started with Arduino as a teenager before building his global open-source 3D printer company The Innovation of Simplicity: Massimo argues that Arduino’s true innovation is the user experience This is measured by the “Time to First Blink”, the goal for a user to go from downloading software to blinking an LED in five minutes Standardization and “The Core”: Arduino became an ad-hoc standard by providing a compatibility layer across different microcontrollers Massimo believes in having a “small slice of a really large pie” by allowing other architectures to work within the ecosystem Hardware Architecture and the “Lasagna”: Inspired by the PC104 format, the board uses a layered approach where modules stack like a lasagna The “Shield of a King”: The name Arduino comes from King Arduino of Ivrea; David Cuartielles suggested that since the board was named after a king, the add-on modules should be called “Shields” Hardware Design Choices: The board fits a credit card size (to stay within the free version of Eagle software) and is blue because that color was thought to be less tiring for workers’ eyes Happy Accidents: The unique shape was chosen to be “ourselves instead of everyone else” During the design process, Massimo inadvertently moved a connector by half a step, creating an offset header that they kept for consistency after the first few thousand were made The Discovery of Auto-Reset: During a workshop in Germany, Massimo solved the frustration of manual resets by soldering a capacitor to the DTR pin, allowing the software to trigger the reset automatically The US Market and Legal Battles: Tom Igoe's adoption of Arduino at NYU helped the US become the project’s single biggest market This growth led to a difficult legal battle for control of the brand against a former partner Support from Arm: Massimo credits Arm Ltd (and CEO Simon Segars) for providing the strategic support that allowed the founders to regain control of the company. Massimo believes this is the first time he has talked about the role of Arm in the difficult legal process. Industrial and AI Expansion: Partnerships with Intel and Microsoft (Windows 10 IoT) led to early forays into TinyML (AI on small boards) back in 2017 The Qualcomm Acquisition: In October 2025, Qualcomm acquired Arduino, which Massimo sees as essential for bringing “advanced silicon” into the family to handle the increasing complexity of technology The “Arduino Formula” and Layering: Massimo views Arduino as a formula for simplification that can be applied to anything, including complex Linux machines like the Uno Q This is achieved by building in layers, where beginners use high-level abstractions and experts can “strip away” layers to reach the bare metal The Future Vision: Massimo looks forward to the “Arduino Formula” being applied to new fields, stating he is waiting for someone to develop an “Arduino for biology” using CRISPR and DNA technology
