The past year took its toll on everyone, with the COVID-19 pandemic closing everything from churches to live music events. Musicians, accustomed to playing before live audiences and sparking off their enthusiasm, holed up and shared their talents over the airwaves and the Internet. But live music is back, and so is the Floresville Opry! And that makes one Texas musician flash the trademark grin that earned him the nickname, “Smilin' Bob,” from Grand Ole Opry announcer Keith Bilbrey. Wilson County News touched base with Freer, Texas, native Bobby Marquez, who will headline the Floresville Opry on Sunday, July 4,...Article Link
In this week's episode, we're featuring the first album in nine years from Nashville transplant Bobby Marquez, "The Cowboy Way" (2018). Hailing from the deep south of Texas, he moved to Nashville in the late 90s to pursue the country music dream. Nicknamed "Smilin'" Bobby Marquez by WSM legend Keith Bilbrey, his positive attitude has come in handy since his move to Music City: signed to two major labels and dropped from both for reasons beyond his control, with some help from his wife and Texas Country Music DJ Hall Of Famer Jennifer Herron, Marquez founded his own label and did things his own way. Playing by his own rules has worked well for him: winning awards and entertaining crowds worldwide with his easy traditional style that brings to mind the heyday of George Strait and Alan Jackson (he's had songs recorded by both) - "The Cowboy Way" is a solid dose of originality, with highlights including the bouncy "What's The Deal"; a great duet with fellow Texan Johnny Rodriguez on one of that man's first hits, "Ridin' My Thumb To Mexico"; a fun opener in "Honky Tonk" and a dedication to his late father-in-law on "The Cowboy Way". Solid.

Bluegrass music has produced a few mainstream hits and cultural moments, from The Beverly Hillbillies to O Brother, Where Art Thou? But the genre has never generated a crossover star like Alison Krauss. Since her debut album in 1987, Krauss has never stopped performing hot and heavy bluegrass music, but of course she's spread her stylistic wings wide, achieving a historically original flavor of adult contemporary pop and folk. Her jaunt with Robert Plant caught folks by surprise in 2007 but it shouldn't have. She's up for a musical adventure. On her most recent project, Windy City, Krauss brings her voice to classic country music, refurbishing standards like Gentle on My Mind and Poison Love. It's a collaboration with star country songwriter and producer Buddy Cannon, with whom she has a great history. Guest interviewer Keith Bilbrey speaks with Buddy Cannon and Alison Krauss. Plus Time Machine Tape with Dolly Parton in 1967.
Episode 8: Keith Bilbrey by Behind The Curtain of Country Music
The easiest way to describe the Sept. 28 Music City Roots was Ladies Night – our four acts were all led by women. But outside of their creators’ XX chromosomes, those four sets of music had virtually nothing in common. It was an unusual night in more ways than that. With host Jim Lauderdale and “interview guy” Craig Havighurst at the IBMA’s annual gathering in Raleigh, Sam Bush and I were called in. Fortunately, golden-throated MCR announcer Keith Bilbrey was minding the store and maintaining standards. Sam and his trademark mandolin, “Hoss,” appropriately opened the evening with a well-known musical female, Bob Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country.” Although it’s not on his fine new CD, Storyman, it captured that album’s singer-songwriter approach while showing off his mandolin mastery, setting the song to a bluesy, Allman-style riff. Pound for pound, there is no better, more dynamic mandolin picker on earth. Angel Snow, fresh from her weekend performance at Franklin’s Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival played the first set, backed by lap steel guitarist Jason Goforth. Recently signed to Nettwerk (Sarah McLachlan’s longtime label), she’s working on a folk-pop record that expands her sound with electronics, but it’s hard to imagine how she could improve upon the simple beauty of her MCR set, stripped down to two guitars and one voice, creating an atmosphere at once rootsy and ethereal.
