Season 5, EPISODE 253 Blue Roan Quarter Horses For Sale: Superior Bloodlines, Disposition, and Conformation For over 77 years, the Froelich Legacy Quarter Horse program has been dedicated to raising Quarter Horses with the kind of conformation, color, and disposition that make them stand out in any setting. From ranch work to the show pen, our horses are bred to perform with steady minds, strong builds, and eye-catching color. Breeding Legacy: Blue Roans Before They Were Cool Our roan program began with the AQHA stallion McKeag, whose influence established us as respected breeders of rare and beautiful Blue Roans. McKeag's legacy continues through his son FQHR McLovin, who has proven to pass on an even stronger disposition than his sire. Customers often remark that McLovin foals are “born broke” with a natural work ethic—colts and fillies that simply need to be taught the buttons. Our Current Stallions FQHR McLovin – A direct McKeag son carrying forward his sire's stamp with even more disposition and trainability. His foals are known for their honest minds and ability to go straight to work. Siring horses that have excelled in versatility and having sired a 6-time world champion in roping. FQHR Conagher – A younger stallion quickly making his mark. His foals show outstanding conformation, muscle definition, and personable, loving natures that make them a joy to raise. LHR Smart Sugar Boon – A powerful performance cross on foundation blood. His pedigree ties back to legends like Peptoboonsmal and Smart Little Lena, bringing athleticism and cow sense while maintaining the kind of mind we demand in our program. Our focus today is on producing horses with balanced conformation, proven genetics, and minds that fit any rider. Whether for ranch work, arena competition, or simply a trusted partner to ride, Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses are bred to handle the job and look good doing it. Annual Quarter Horse Production Sale: 3rd Saturday of September The Froelich Legacy Quarter Horses program proudly offers Blue Roan Quarter Horses for sale each year during the annual production sale, traditionally held on the third Saturday in September. These horses are more than just beautiful—they bring together the ideal combination of athletic ability, trainability, and color that discerning buyers want. The breeding philosophy is simple: breed Quarter Horses we love to ride—selecting bloodlines from the greats to produce horses with the perfect balance of cow sense, athletic ability, and a steady temperament. Whether pulling calves to the branding iron, roping in the arena, or enjoying a relaxed evening trail ride, these colorful Quarter Horses continually prove their versatility. Cattle Industry News Livestock Market Report & Outlook From Dr. Andrew Griffith The latest livestock comments from Livestock Marketing Specialist Dr. Andrew Griffith who said prices were strong for every class of animal offered on the market, which tends to bring optimism to all involved. This optimism leads to thoughts of expanding herd sizes to capitalize on the strong market. He continued by saying fed cattle traded unevenly steady last week. To put this market into perspective he asked the question, how many finished cattle does it take to purchase a new pickup truck? Assuming a 1,400-pound steer and an $80,000 pickup truck, it would take 23 head to have equal value. Using similar elementary math, it would have taken 27 head to purchase a similar yet slightly lower-priced truck in 2024, and it would have taken 25 to 26 head to purchase a similar pickup truck in 2021. This comparison means absolutely nothing other than the value of a finished steer has increased more than a pickup truck in relative terms. However, it is a rather small increase, relatively speaking. He wrapped up by saying how these relative prices change over time is not all that important. What is important is if cattle feeders are making money or not. Monthly cow prices in 2025 have climbed steadily, rising from $126 in January to a record $157/cwt in July, highlighting a strong and consistent upward trend throughout the year. For perspective, prices were just $62 in 2019, meaning values have surged $81/cwt over six years or a 131% increase. Looking further back, cow prices were $43 in 2003, rising steadily over the next decade to peak at $107 in 2014 and $103 in 2015. That historic run was followed by a multi-year downturn before the current rally pushed prices to unprecedented levels. REFERENCES: https://www.nationalbeefwire.com/u-s-cattle-report New World Screwworm Soaring In Mexico Mexico's official count shows that New World screwworm is continuing to spread rapidly in the country, keeping the U.S. border closed to cattle imports and redirecting production to the Mexican packing industry. According to Mexican government data viewed earlier and cited by the Reuters news agency, Authorities had a tally of 5,086 cases through August 17, 53% more than July's total. The infestations were mostly afflicting cattle, though cases were also reported in sheep, horses and dogs. USDA last month reinstated a ban on Mexican livestock imports — the third halt since late 2024 to imports of cattle to U.S. feedlots and packers. The agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite, which had been eradicated in North America for decades before a rapid march northward starting two years ago in Panama. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. Cattle Industry News Govt. confirms first US human case of New World Screwworm The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC confirmed the first human case in the U.S. of New World screwworm. According to a Reuters report, the individual is a Maryland resident, and they contracted screwworm during a trip to El Salvador. The CDC confirmed the diagnosis on Aug. 4, as did the Maryland Department of Health. In a statement to Reuters, HHS Spokesman Andrew G. Nixon said "The Risk to public health in the U.S. from this introduction is very low." In recent months, the U.S. government has taken considerable steps in protecting livestock from screwworm. Mid-July, USDA restarted its ban on Mexican livestock imports, and just last week, the agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite's spread. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. Screwworms are parasitic flies whose females lay eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal. Once the eggs hatch, hundreds of screwworm larvae use their sharp mouths to burrow through living flesh, eventually killing their host if left untreated. Livestock traders and beef producers have been on edge about the potential for cases in cattle as prices have already hit record highs because the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest size in seven decades. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. Season 5, EPISODE 249 Red Angus Association Rebrands Feeder Calf Certification Program As Angus Access The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) has officially rebranded its longstanding Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP) to Angus Access. This change reflects more than just a name update — it marks a strategic evolution in how Red Angus cattle are marketed, verified, and positioned within the beef industry. What Is Angus Access Angus Access is the beef industry's first genetic, age, and source verification program, now modernized for today's traceability and quality assurance demands. USDA-approved and trusted by Red Angus producers for over 30 years, the program now better aligns with both consumer expectations and industry trends like case-ready beef and private label branding. Why Red Angus? Premium Quality, Recognized Value Red Angus cattle consistently produce premium Angus beef, a product category in high demand with consumers seeking quality and consistency. The new name, Angus Access, emphasizes the breed's place within Angus-branded beef programs, helping Red Angus producers gain the recognition — and market share — they deserve. A Legacy Of Verification & Market Access Originally launched in 1995, the Feeder Calf Certification Program was developed to help Red Angus calves compete with black-hided counterparts and gain access to value-based marketing opportunities. Through USDA-backed verification and the program's iconic yellow tags, Red Angus calves earned industry-wide recognition for: Feedlot performance Carcass consistency High-quality beef production Today, over 3.5 million calves have been enrolled in FCCP and its crossbred counterpart, Allied Access. Both programs have helped commercial producers nationwide capture added value through verified genetics and transparent sourcing. Transition To 840 Tags By 2026 RAAA is ensuring a smooth transition for current users. While existing FCCP tags remain valid through July 1, 2027, starting January 1, 2026, only 840 EID (Electronic Identification) tags will be issued for both Angus Access and Allied Access programs. Benefits of 840 EID tags include: Improved traceability Automated data collection Reduced tag loss Enhanced animal-level tracking (e.g., birthweight, health protocols, genetics) Better compliance with domestic and export regulations Optional visual tags with the Angus Access and Allied Access logos will still be available for producers who value visual ID. EID Technology Supports The Future Of Beef Production As vertically integrated supply chains become the norm, EID-based verification systems are now expected by many beef processors, including sustainability-driven companies like Sustainable Beef. Research shows that beef products linked to transparent, verified production practices increase consumer trust by over 80%, driving repeat purchases and stronger brand loyalty. Angus Access: Driving The Future Of Verified Red Angus Beef The Angus Access rebrand is more than a marketing change — it's a powerful statement of RAAA's commitment to innovation, data integrity, and producer success. As consumer preferences and retailer demands evolve, Angus Access ensures that Red Angus genetics and the cattlemen behind them are ready to lead the way in transparent, value-driven beef production. Week In The Rockies Superior Livestock Auction Sale Report A tremendous cattle market for the Week In The Rockies Sale by Superior Livestock Auction. Few complete Sale Reports HERE. Beef Cattle News Beef Market Uncertainty Fueled By Tight Supplies & High Prices According to Texas A&M Agricultural Economist David Anderson, the beef sector is entering a prolonged period of tight supplies and sustained high prices, and any meaningful herd expansion remains elusive. Anderson said that calf prices have reached record levels, with 500- to 600-pound steers in the Southern Plains averaging $4 per pound, but instead of retaining heifers to grow the herd, producers are largely “taking the money and running.” The shift toward expansion, when it happens, could lead to a temporary sharp decline in beef production, as fewer heifers are sent to feedlots. Anderson pointed to the upcoming Cattle on Feed report, which will include a quarterly update on heifers versus steers on feed, as a key signal. Another headwind for beef production is the ongoing closure of the U.S.-Mexico border to imported feeder cattle due to screw worm concerns. Anderson said the loss of 26,000 head per week is equivalent to 4% of the U.S. calf crop and about 18% of feeder placements in the Southwest, with significant regional impacts. The effects of that shortfall are already being seen, Anderson said, as steer and heifer slaughter continue to fall below year-ago levels. While heavier carcass weights have helped offset declining numbers in recent years, Anderson expects weights to dip below 2024 levels due to shorter feeding periods and fewer days on feed. Anderson said that dynamic of fewer cattle and lower weights will continue to tighten beef supplies and support high prices. Prices for 50% lean trimmings have reached record highs amid strong demand for ground beef. While retail prices typically dip after summer highs, Anderson said overall price levels will remain elevated. He forecast quarterly declines in beef production through 2026, citing fewer calves, a smaller cow herd and the absence of imported feeders. Even if herd expansion begins now, Anderson said, the biology of the cattle cycle means any supply increases are years away. “We're already talking four years out before you even see increases in beef production,” he said. Top Reasons To Use Drones For Spraying Pastures & Weeds Agri Drones can seed and spray chemicals when fields are not ready for equipment and it is more precise than other aerial seeding options. Plus a drone can avoid obstacles and pinpoint certain areas. You can find out more about who we used to control our noxious weeds by clicking Pro Ag Solutions. 1. Precision Application Targeted spraying of individual weed patches instead of blanket applications Reduces herbicide waste and chemical drift GPS-guided flight paths ensure consistent coverage and record-keeping 2. Access Hard-to-Reach Areas Drones can easily reach: Steep terrain Wet ground or boggy spots Brushy fence lines and ravines Eliminates the need to risk equipment damage or operator safety in difficult terrain 3. Reduced Soil Compaction No heavy tractor tires driving over sensitive ground Helps preserve soil structure and forage health 4. Time & Labor Savings Faster setup and application time compared to manual or vehicle-based sprayers Reduces labor requirements — one operator can manage several acres per hour Perfect for small patches or spot treatments that aren't worth dragging out a boom sprayer 5. Ideal for Sensitive Areas Less impact on: Native grasses Wildlife habitat Waterways (when used with precision nozzles and appropriate buffers) 6. Data Collection & Monitoring Many drones are equipped to map weed infestations before spraying Enables before-and-after analysis, recordkeeping, and adaptive management 7. Cost-Effective for Small & Mid-Sized Pastures Great return on investment for: Pastures under 200 acres Rotational grazing systems Landowners or ranchers who want more control over timing and application Cattle News Cattlemen's Groups React to “The One, Big, Beautiful Bill” The U.S. Cattlemen's Association (USCA) and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) commented on the successful passage of "The One, Big, Beautiful Bill", which includes several provisions critical to the U.S. livestock industry and wins for America's family farmers and ranchers. A few of the highlights include: Livestock Indemnity Program Establishes a payment rate for losses due to predation at 100% of the market value and losses due to adverse weather or disease at 75% of the market value. Introduces additional payments for unborn livestock death losses incurred on or after January 1, 2024, at a rate determined by the Secretary, not exceeding 85% of the payment rate for the lowest weight class of livestock. Livestock Forage Disaster Program Allows for two monthly payments and specifying eligibility criteria based on grazing periods and expands the program by allowing it to kick in after 4 consecutive weeks of drought, rather than the previous 8 consecutive weeks Emergency Assistance Provides emergency assistance for cattle with specific payment rates and eligibility criteria. Death Tax The bill increases the Death Tax exemption to $15 million per individual or $30 million per couple, adjusted annually for inflation. This means if the value of your farm or ranch plus equipment, cattle, and other assets are less than $15 million individually or $30 million as a couple Foreign Animal Disease Prevention Specifies funding allocations for foreign animal disease prevention programs. A temporary 90-day tariff cut — down to 32% for beef and 57% for pork — failed to revive U.S. meat shipments to levels seen in May 2024. Trade Challenges Mount Ahead of August Deadline Compounding the issue, China declined to renew registrations for multiple U.S. beef plants and cold storage facilities in February, further restricting exports, says the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). “The need for progress in trade talks is urgent,” said USMEF President Dan Halstrom, warning that tariffs could spike again on August 12. Exporters are already reconsidering their plans for the Chinese market. Season 5, EPISODE 240 Farmatan Used To Manage Bloat Cattle producers have experienced reductions in bloats and death loss using Farmatan liquid and powder. A peer reviewed study found 81% fewer days of bloat and 17% ADG of heifers grazing winter wheat. Jeff Bezos Invests Millions to Cut Methane Emissions from Livestock Billionaire Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and one of the world's wealthiest individuals with a net worth exceeding $190 billion, is turning his attention to livestock production. Through the Bezos Earth Fund, a $10 billion climate-focused initiative he launched in 2020, Bezos is investing in projects designed to reduce methane emissions from cattle. Bezos Earth Fund Targets Methane Emissions in Cattle Ranching, farming, and the Western lifestyle are at the heart of everything we do. Tigger & BEC bring you exclusive insights from the world of working ranches, cattle farming, and sustainable beef production. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, according to climate scientists. To address this, Bezos and the Global Methane Hub have jointly launched a $27.4 million initiative aimed at breeding low-methane-emitting cattle and developing technologies to curb livestock emissions globally. This groundbreaking initiative includes: $8.7 million for low-emission dairy breeding in Holstein, Jersey, Brown Swiss, and Red breeds, led by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. $4.85 million to the Angus Foundation (Saint Joseph, MO) to integrate low-methane traits into beef cattle breeding programs across North America, Oceania, and Europe. $3.35 million to support methane-efficient breeding in Indigenous African cattle populations. $2.34 million to the University of Nebraska to research methane reduction in commercial and crossbred beef cattle herds. $8.1 million toward research at universities in Uruguay and Australia and for rumen microbiome analysis. A Powerful Push to Transform Livestock Emissions Bezos is not working alone. The Global Methane Hub, launched in 2022 in support of the Global Methane Pledge from COP26, brings together powerful partners including the IKEA Foundation, Inter-American Development Bank, and major NGOs. With deep funding and global reach, the coalition is pushing for fast, scalable solutions in agriculture. Season 5, EPISODE 238 It's The Ranch It Up Radio Show! Join Jeff Tigger Erhardt, Rebecca Wanner AKA BEC and their crew as they answer your questions about implanting your calves, part 2. Plus join the discussion of free standing panels versus permanent fencing in new corral designs. We have the markets, horses for sale and lots more on this all new episode of The Ranch It Up Radio Show. Be sure to subscribe on your favorite podcasting app or on the Ranch It Up Radio Show YouTube Channel. For Cow Calf Producers, Implants Have A Clear Advantage There's a perception that non-implanted calves garner a higher premium on sale day than their implanted counterparts. However, data consistently shows no difference in sale price between implanted and non-implanted calves. Why Use Ralgro From Merck Animal Health RALGRO® (zeranol implants) increases weaning weight by 23 pounds on average compared to non-implanted calves, according to Merck Animal Health. With results like that, it's easy to see how cattle implants at the cow-calf level can result in a favorable payday. Free Standing Panels Vs. Permanent Fencing Free-Standing Panels Advantages: Portability: Can be moved or reconfigured easily for different livestock, seasons, or operational needs. Ideal for temporary or seasonal use. Quick Setup & Removal: Require no digging or permanent installation—set up in hours instead of days. Versatile Use: Can be used for corrals, sorting pens, alleyways, or even makeshift chutes or holding pens. Minimal Ground Disturbance: No need to dig post holes or pour concrete, preserving soil and reducing site impact. Ideal for Leasing or Shared Land: Can be used on rented property or rotated across pastures. Disadvantages: Less Durable in Harsh Conditions: More likely to shift, tip, or become unstable in high winds or with aggressive animals. Theft or Misplacement: More prone to being stolen or moved if not secured. Higher Long-Term Cost per Use: Although cheaper upfront than heavy-duty permanent structures, replacing or repairing worn panels can add up. Limited Size & Strength: Often not suitable for large or very strong animals unless reinforced or anchored. Permanent Fencing Advantages: Strength & Durability: More secure for large or aggressive livestock. Withstands weather and repeated use better over time. Low Maintenance (Long-Term): When built correctly with quality materials, requires less frequent repair. Increased Property Value: Adds permanent infrastructure, improving land resale or lease value. Security: Less likely to be tampered with, moved, or stolen. Disadvantages: Expensive Upfront: Higher costs for materials, labor, and installation. Inflexible: Cannot be moved or resized without significant effort and cost. Time-Consuming to Install: May take days or weeks to complete, especially for larger corrals or complex layouts. Requires Permanent Land Use Decision: Not ideal for rotational grazing systems or temporary setups. Which One to Choose? Use Free-Standing Panels if: You need flexibility, have limited budget upfront, are leasing land, or run a mobile or multi-site operation. Choose Permanent Fencing if: You want long-term security, own the land, manage large herds, or need infrastructure that stands the test of time. U.S.–China Trade War Eases with Major Tariff Reductions on Meat Exports In a significant development for U.S. agriculture, the ongoing U.S.–China trade war eased this week following a new 90-day tariff reduction agreement. The deal brings temporary relief to U.S. meat exporters who have faced steep trade barriers in the Chinese market. Under the agreement, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, including meat, will fall from 125% to 10%. The reductions officially took effect on Wednesday, May 14th, signaling progress as both nations continue trade negotiations. China, the world's largest beef importer, remains a critical market for U.S. meat. In 2024 alone, U.S. exports to China included nearly $1.6 billion in beef, $1.1 billion in pork, and $490 million in poultry meat and products. This temporary tariff relief offers a much-needed boost to American meat producers and exporters while long-term trade talks continue. REFERENCE: https://www.meatingplace.com/Industry/News/Details/119098 USDA Closes U.S. Border to Livestock Imports Amid Northward Spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has once again closed the southern border to live cattle, horses, and bison imports due to the ongoing detection and rapid spread of New World Screwworm or NWS, in southern Mexico. This latest decision follows continued reports of the parasite advancing further north than previously observed—up to 700 miles from the U.S. border. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the immediate suspension of livestock imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border. This action comes after the border had temporarily reopened in early February following enhanced inspections and biosecurity protocols. The border was initially closed in November of the previous year due to similar concerns. The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) poses a significant threat to livestock health and U.S. agriculture. Though eradicated from the United States in 1966, NWS has reemerged in remote areas of southern Mexico, including on farms with limited cattle movement. The pest's resurgence is being treated with high urgency by both U.S. and Mexican officials. To combat the spread, USDA-APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) is working closely with Mexican authorities to increase the release of sterile screwworm flies, the primary method for controlling the pest. This sterile fly technique had successfully helped maintain a barrier zone in southern Mexico and later extended into Panama, serving as a buffer for decades. However, over the past two years, the screwworm has advanced through Central America and back into Mexico, creating an escalating threat to U.S. livestock industries. USDA-APHIS and Mexican counterparts will continue aggressive surveillance, monitoring, and mitigation efforts to stop the spread. The border will remain closed until USDA determines that the risk has been sufficiently mitigated and disease metrics improve. The decision to suspend cattle imports from Mexico has led to a downward revision in projected U.S. beef production for 2025 and 2026, according to the agency's latest WAZ-de Report, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. The report cites tighter cattle supplies and reduced slaughter volumes tied to the import halt as key drivers behind the lower forecasts. Beef exports are also forecast lower as limited domestic supplies are expected to reduce U.S. competitiveness abroad. Season 5, EPISODE 233 Virtual Fencing For Livestock Management Vence, developed by Merck Animal Health, is an innovative virtual fencing system designed to manage cattle movement without traditional physical fences. Utilizing GPS-enabled collars and solar-powered base stations, Vence allows ranchers to define and adjust grazing boundaries remotely, enhancing rotational grazing practices and reducing labor and fencing costs. How Virtual Fence From Vence Fence Works Base Stations: Solar-powered units are strategically placed to communicate with the collars, covering 5,000 to 10,000 acres depending on terrain. CattleRider Collars: Each cow wears a collar equipped with GPS and RF transceivers to track location and communicate with base stations. HerdManager System: Ranchers use this platform to set and modify virtual boundaries via tablet or computer, facilitating dynamic grazing management. Merck Animal Health USA Animal Guidance: As cattle approach virtual boundaries, collars emit sound cues; if ignored, a humane electric pulse is applied. Cattle learn to respond to these cues, minimizing the need for physical barriers. Cattle Industry News Trump's Tariffs Trigger Chinese Retaliation, Impacting U.S. Meat Exports President Donald Trump ordered new tariffs on Chinese goods, raising total duties to 104% starting Wednesday in response to China's retaliation against earlier U.S. measures. In return, China imposed steep tariffs on U.S. meat—56% on beef and 81% on pork—effective Thursday, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. This move threatens a major market, as China and Hong Kong were the third-largest U.S. pork buyers at $1.14 billion and the second-largest for beef at nearly $2 billion last year. Meanwhile, Mexico—America's top pork buyer—has not yet responded to separate U.S. tariffs outside the USMCA agreement. Dr. Jeffrey Gold, President of the University of Nebraska system, testified recently before the House Committee on Veteran Affairs Health Subcommittee on plans to replace a 1950 VA hospital with a hospital on the university grounds, with projected savings of half a billion dollars. Since the Trump administration began two months ago, it has been “a day-by-day, week-by-week course adjustment,” featuring ongoing court deliberations, cuts to programs, and the rollout of tariffs, amid great uncertainty. Anxiety has risen due to the unusual speed of change, which has permitted little time to prepare. In the meantime, the decline in the price of corn and soy jeopardizes the economy. The university system and hospitals account for 8.5-9% of the state's GDP, the highest level per capita in the country. They also depend on $700 million of extramurally funded research. For the past nine years, Dr. Gold has led the highly successful weekly cable broadcast, ‘Rural Health Matters' on Monday nights on RFD TV. Its mandate is to create awareness among farmers and ranchers, reaching over 15 million households, of the most impactful health matters.
