From the 1940s to the 1960s, Eva Garza’s voice could be heard singing Mexican rancheras throughout Latin America. Though her story and music is largely forgotten today, her genes live on: Garza's great-niece is the Texas singer-songwriter Carrie Rodriguez. In 2016, she released Lola, a bi-lingual record that combines her own Americana sound with the echoes of her family’s musical heritage, courtesy of a crack band led by Luke Jacobs that includes guest guitar polymaths Bill Frisell and David Pulkingham, bassist Viktor Krauss, and others. Carrie Rodriguez plays music from Lola, in-studio.
This week, New York singer-songwriter, Americana and folk duo Richie & Rosie recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with these two fascinating talents. “Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton grew up 150 miles and a few decades apart. While both were raised by professional cellists, Richie started playing banjo at age 14 and Rosie began classical piano lessons at eight, eventually moving to classical viola as a teen. Both shared incredibly unique, musically-immersed childhoods. Richie’s family founded the iconic GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance (of which he is now President) and by her junior year of high school, Rosie was playing fiddle and touring with folk rock band The Mammals. During that time, the two were introduced at Saratoga Springs’ Flurry festival, a meeting that would spark a fated friendship and unique musical bond. ‘He left an impression on me because he was wearing Converse. I had never seen an adult wear Converse before,’ said Rosie, reflecting back on the first time she shared the stage with Richie. As a Woodstock native, she graduated high school and decided to move to Ithaca after being drawn to the thriving old-time scene, which happened to also be Richie’s stomping grounds. While studying viola at Ithaca College and playing fiddle on the side, Rosie started incorporating folk with her traditional Celtic and classical upbringing. Meanwhile, Richie was a well-established singer and banjo player in the community, having performed around the world with bands like Bela Fleck, Pete Seeger, David Byrne, Billy Bragg & Wilco, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Joan Baez. In addition to releasing two solo albums, Richie was adding to his endless discography, which includes three Natalie Merchant records, multiple collaborations with Jim Lauderdale and Donna The Buffalo, and Carrie Rodriguez.” https://richieandrosie.com/bio In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark original Frank Ellis performing a traditional fiddle medley from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Writer, musician, and traditional dancer Aubrey Atwater discusses songs of “home” with musical examples and her own cultivated insight. Home, hearth, family, and sense of place are profound aspects of the human experience. In this segment, we explore American folk songs that address leaving home, returning home, searching for home, homesickness, and our heavenly home.

I am a latecomer to the world and talent of Jim Lauderdale...I "discovered" him in 2010 in Nashville at my first Americanafest (the annual conference of the Americana Music Association); he hosted the Annual Awards Ceremony at The Ryman Auditorium and I caught his official showcase with a full band at The Mercy Lounge. Shortly thereafter he was on a bill with Carrie Rodriguez at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City and I try to make every performance in my home town. I've become a true fan of his music and his amazing work ethic. He has released dozens of albums, been nominated for Grammies, is one of the most prolific collaborators in American music and yet still flies under most of the American public's musical radar. In this "phoner" into the Production Studio at 90.1 FM in 2015 during the release of Jim's "I am a Song," you'll hear a wide ranging conversation of his early musical beginnings as a banjo player in New York City's country scene, his love affair with the Eastern mind/body discipline tai chi, and a recounting of just a few of his collaborations...oh the collaborations! Dr. Ralph Stanley, Buddy Miller, Robert Hunter, Nick Lowe, Roland White, Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell and many more. Enjoy my conversation with the King of Americana Jim Lauderdale!

Often called "The Godfather of Americana", Chip Taylor's songs have been recorded by such musical legends as Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, and many many more. A 2016 Songwriter Hall of Fame Inductee, Chip's songs are feature in over 115 movies and TV shows. His career spans over 5 decades and includes iconic hits like "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning". Since 2000, he has released nearly one album a year and has 2 new albums ready for release, in addition to the 27 albums already out. Along with friends Kris Kristofferson and John Prine, Chip was one of leaders of the Alt-Country movement in the 1970's. Early in our conversation I mistakenly commented, "so, you write poems and put them to music". Taylor quickly stopped me to explain that was not, in fact, the case. He shared that, since the first time he realized he felt music more than most people, at age 5, when he experienced what he calls, “The Chill Factor,” he has continued to follow that innate instinct. He hears a tune, works through it, and eventually discovers that words will magically work their way into the tune. Instincts run through the veins of Chip and his brothers: brother Barry invented the formula that predicts when volcanoes erupt and Jon (Voight) is an Academy Award-Winning actor known for his instinctual character portrayals. What ensued was a riveting conversation about trust in one's own instrument, refusal to try to "guess the market" in the arts and allowing one's self to produce an enormous volume of high-quality work by nurturing the soul and providing the space in one's life to always be able to create. SHOW NOTES: 3 boys, 3 unique talents, (8:42). Parental encouragement, (10:38). “Right before school, my dad said, ‘What is this day going to bring us now? It's a Roots Rewind show where we mine our tape vaults for standout performances by women who killed and thrilled between 2013 and last year. We'll hear Memphis bass player and torchy songwriter Amy LaVere, the sublime and uncategorizable Kristina Train, humanistic humorist Susan Werner and a closing set of songs in Spanish and English from Austin's remarkable Carrie Rodriguez. We hear as well from mountain modernist folk artist Dori Freeman from VA and Leah Blevins from KY. They're voice you know and voices on their way up.
Chip Taylor is best known as the songwriter for both “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning,” but there’s so much more to him than just those two songs. For one, he’s written hundreds of other tunes, including “I Can’t Let Go” for the Hollies, and “Try a Little Harder” recorded by Janis Joplin.Taylor got his start in a rockabilly group, Wes Voight and the Town Three, who were signed to a subsidiary of King Records back in 1958. He released a series of critically-acclaimed solo LP’s in the Seventies before retiring from music in the Eighties. After returning to music in the mid-Nineties, Taylor has been on a hot streak as of late, releasing an average of an album a year. He’s also issued several successful records with fiddle player Carrie Rodriguez. His latest release is A Song I Can Live With.
The easiest way to describe the Sept. 28 Music City Roots was Ladies Night – our four acts were all led by women. But outside of their creators’ XX chromosomes, those four sets of music had virtually nothing in common. It was an unusual night in more ways than that. With host Jim Lauderdale and “interview guy” Craig Havighurst at the IBMA’s annual gathering in Raleigh, Sam Bush and I were called in. Fortunately, golden-throated MCR announcer Keith Bilbrey was minding the store and maintaining standards. Sam and his trademark mandolin, “Hoss,” appropriately opened the evening with a well-known musical female, Bob Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country.” Although it’s not on his fine new CD, Storyman, it captured that album’s singer-songwriter approach while showing off his mandolin mastery, setting the song to a bluesy, Allman-style riff. Pound for pound, there is no better, more dynamic mandolin picker on earth. Angel Snow, fresh from her weekend performance at Franklin’s Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival played the first set, backed by lap steel guitarist Jason Goforth. Recently signed to Nettwerk (Sarah McLachlan’s longtime label), she’s working on a folk-pop record that expands her sound with electronics, but it’s hard to imagine how she could improve upon the simple beauty of her MCR set, stripped down to two guitars and one voice, creating an atmosphere at once rootsy and ethereal.
Hayes Carll, Darrell Scott, Parker Millsap, Brennen Leigh and Carrie Rodriguez on Mountain Stage. Episode 871 recorded live in Charleston, West Virginia.
Producer Lee Townsend is my guest on the show this week. Lee is a producer in the truest sense of the word. He’s not a performing musician, never has been, but has always been deeply into music and he brings a philosophy and easy going nature to sessions that make people rally around and perform their best. Lee is best known for his decades-long relationship in the studio and as manager for Bill Frisell, with whom he has made many records, earned Grammy Awards and countless other accolades, but he has also made some amazing records for artists as diverse as Dave Holland, Viktor Krauss, John Scofield, Charlie Hunter, Louden Wainwright, Carrie Rodriguez, and many more. He is an artistic member of the group Floratone, which is an experimental collaboration with Frisell, Matt Chamberlain, Tucker Martine, and Lee. He has also worked as VP of A&R for Verve/Polygram and as General Manager of of ECM Records in the USA.
