In this episode, Hanan and Lina catch up after a short break. Lina shares a powerful moment from her visit to Ellis Island, where she found her grandfather's name listed with “Palestine” as his homeland: proof of a history that refuses to be erased. The conversation then shifts to the heartbreaking reality in Gaza: Israel's intentional starvation of the people there, the genocide unfolding in real time, and the urgent need for awareness and action from all of us.Please consider donating to the following organizations and campaigns:Medicine Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders)https://give.doctorswithoutborders.org/Al-Mawasi Clinic: Help volunteer healthcare workers at Al-Mawasi Clinic continue their mission—treating the wounded, caring for the sick, and saving lives with whatever limited supplies they have. https://chuffed.org/project/137827-help-al-mawasi-clinic-provide-life-saving-careSameer Project: a Palestinian-led aid initiative working to supply emergency shelter and aid to displaced families in Gaza. https://chuffed.org/project/136892-medical-campaign-x-sameer-projectSupport Tareq's family in Gaza:https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-tareqs-family-in-gazaSupport the showBecome a supporter of the show: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1786960/supportFollow us on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook @ObnoxiouslyPleasantFollow us on Twitter @TheOP_Podcast
The foreign press corps in Israel has been battling – unsuccessfully – since the Gaza war began in October 2023 to be permitted access to the Strip in order to report on the conflict and the humanitarian situation there from the ground. Appearing on the Haaretz Podcast, CNN’s Jerusalem correspondent Jeremy Diamond breaks down the status of the legal and public fight by international journalists to enter Gaza, noting that “never before in Israel's history has the Israeli government blocked access to Gaza for this amount of time. We reached that milestone months and months ago, and we have been calling on the Israeli government to allow us into Gaza to be able to do our jobs.” The issue has taken on a new urgency, he added, as starvation in Gaza worsens, and he, his fellow journalists and news organizations feel the immediate need to assist and relieve the Palestinian journalists who have been doing “heroic work under extraordinarily difficult circumstances” reporting until now. “The primary motivation for our call is not that they aren’t presenting a fair and accurate picture of what's happening. It's because they shouldn't have to shoulder that burden on their own. We have watched as every single person in Gaza has been impacted by the starvation of this man-made crisis that is happening inside the Gaza Strip, and that includes our fellow journalists inside of Gaza,” Diamond said. In his conversation with host Allison Kaplan Sommer, Diamond also discussed a recent harrowing experience under threat from settlers in the West Bank, as well as his experience transitioning to his post in Jerusalem after covering Donald Trump as CNN's White House correspondent. Hosted on Acast. In his online address to the IIEA, Professor Avi Shlaim discusses his new book, Genocide in Gaza: Israel's Long War on Palestine, a Times Literary Supplement Book of the Year 2024. In the book, Avi Shlaim places Israel's policy towards the Gaza Strip under an uncompromising lens, arguing that Israel has gone beyond land-grabbing and ethnic cleansing to now committing genocide. As a collection of essays written between 2021-2024, the book begins with a foreword by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, and ends with the statement made by Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh KC to the International Court of Justice in the Case of Genocide against Israel. About the Speaker: Avi Shlaim is Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is one of the most acclaimed historians of modern Palestinian and Israeli history. This episode revolves around "Resentment" as a human motivation. We begin with a discussion of a debate conducted by two AI's on the topic of Capitalism vs Socialism and remark on how whinny, nit-picky and generally ungrateful the Socialist bot's arguments were. From here we move into the topic of racial violence in South Africa, apartheid and the history of Rhodesia. Here we again find ourselves discussing resentment as it pertains to social unrest and human tribalism. Next we tackle grandiose ideas, which have played out in human history such as: Manifest Destiny, the Divine Right of Kings and the Right of Conquest. And, as you probably guessed, we can't discuss the Right of Conquest without a detour into the Gaza-Israel conflict and the resentment that so often comes with Imperialism and Colonialism. And finally, we wrap with a commentary on freedom of speech, whether speech can be violence (or incite it) and the special status given to the so-called N-word. Enjoy :)

It's easy to punch down after the results of the 2024 election left Americans wondering if Democrats can rebound, but The more we wade into this disastrous second Trump presidency, the more I contend the American people are realizing they got duped more than Democrats fell short. That doesn't absolve the party of their shortcomings and flaws, but you have to give credit where it's due, and in the case of Georgia's legislative Democrats in particular. Their numbers - suppressed by gerrymandering - were never going to provide them much ability to derail divisive and ugly bills, but they grinded into late hours in the closing days to give it their best effort. Notably they threw everything they had at HB 127, a well-intentioned bill that got poison-amended to include an erasure of anything "D.E.I." in public education. Despite their efforts, it passed in the Senate but died in the House needing to get those Senate amendments voted on. Pity.Still, a lot of bad bills will be on Brian Kemp's desk awaiting his signature, like a license to discriminate, using "religion' as the thin veil. Well, this is where we come in. EDITED TO AD: "We" did show up Saturday, no? Atlanta's "Hands Off" rally was one of dozens, nationwide, all drawing thousands in cities big and small, blue and red. Fantastic, but we're still 19 months out from 2026 midterms and the divisive tactics the right uses to fracture Saturday's unity are still there: trans rights, Gaza/Israel for example. Can the anti-Trump, anti-DOGE, anti-Musk movement stay unified? We'll see.

The Israeli military has sought to defend its actions in Gaza a week ago when its troops fired upon a convoy of vehicles, killing fifteen paramedics, civil defence workers and a UN worker. An Israeli spokesman said there had been no random shooting and militants had been targeted. We hear from Olga Cherevko of the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Gaza. Also, a woman has been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building in Myanmar's capital, four days after a huge earthquake that left thousands dead. And the Great Gatsby turns a hundred - why does it still speak to us today?(Photo: Palestinians gather around a body as they mourn medics, who came under Israeli fire while on a rescue mission, after their bodies were recovered, according to the Red Cross, at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip March 31, 2025. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has emerged as the deadliest war for journalists in modern history. Two Palestinian journalists were killed in Israeli attacks just this week, underscoring the extreme risks faced by reporters in the region. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, at least 165 journalists have been killed since October 2023 — a staggering number that surpasses the total journalist fatalities during the entire span of World War II.The conflict has escalated to a critical point, with Israel resuming strikes on Gaza after breaking a ceasefire with Hamas. Amid this humanitarian catastrophe, journalists persist in their crucial role, risking their lives to document the unfolding events and bring critical information to the world. In response to attacks on Palestinian journalists, Forbidden Stories launched the Gaza Project — a collaboration bringing together over 40 journalists from 12 organizations, including the Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism and The Intercept. Their mission: investigate and expose the unprecedented threats facing journalists in Gaza and the West Bank. On this week's episode of The Intercept Briefing, Hoda Osman, the executive editor of Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism, says the killings have become hauntingly familiar: “A repeated scene seeing a journalist is being killed, and you get the news, and then you see their bodies with a bloodied press vest. And then you see the mourning of their colleagues and their families.”In addition to this extreme risk, Osman says the daily realities confronting Palestinian reporters are difficult to imagine. “I was speaking to a journalist there and she's telling me how hard it is because it's Ramadan and they fast, and at the end of the day at sunset, they're supposed to break fast, but there is no food. And how they're all starting to become extremely weak because of the lack of food. And that was before even the strikes began again,” she says.“Most of them are living in tents,” Osman adds. “A few weeks ago when the weather was really cold, one of the journalists was texting me how they don't know what to do to be warm. They're constantly cold. And then she sent me videos of — it had rained — the whole tent just completely flooding.”But despite all these personal challenges, they keep going.
