We often imagine that freedom means having more power, more money, or fewer people telling us what to do. But none of that makes us free if we cannot control ourselves.

In this episode Dr. Oord engages with Steve Watson's new book entitled All Flesh Shalom: Larger, Freer, More Loving Readings of the Good News of JesusFrom the book description:  So many of the forms of Christianity we have inherited have disappointed us. We've been offered a faith that seems to make people smaller, more rigid, and more violent. This is why James Baldwin once wrote, “If the concept of God has any validity or any use, it can only be to make us larger, freer, and more loving. If God cannot do this, then it is time we got rid of Him.”In this groundbreaking work of constructive Christian theology, Steve Watson takes Baldwin's challenge seriously. He dissects some of white Western Christianity's most narrow and misguided readings of the life and teaching of Jesus. And in conversation with leading open and relational and postcolonial, liberation theologians, Steve explores ways we can engage major themes in the gospels in the service of a larger, freer, more loving faith.

Today on Louisiana Considered, we listen to an episode of a new podcast, “American Colony,” all about the history of Puerto Rico. In this episode produced by WWNO's Alana Schreiber, we dive into baseball history on the archipelago, specifically how the sport was shaped by Black American baseball players. During the golden age of the Negro Leagues, the biggest stars came to play in Puerto Rico. Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Monte Irvin and more than 200 others spent their winter on Puerto Rica teams, playing integrated baseball years before Jackie Robinson crossed the color line in the U.S. They experienced a sense of fame, freedom and dignity they never received on U.S. soil, and in turn, changed how the game was played and inspired some of the Puerto Rican greats, including Roberto Clemente. —This episode of American Colony was produced by Alana Schreiber and hosted by Julio Ricardo Varela. It was edited by Nuria Net. Translation help from Illan Ireland. For archival recordings, special thanks to the Lewis B. There is a fear that lives quietly inside almost every grieving parent. It rarely gets said out loud, but it shapes so much of how we carry our grief. If I let go of the pain, will I lose them too? Caryn, Josh's mom, spent years living inside that fear before she finally understood something that changed everything for her. Josh was Caryn's oldest son, a champion wrestler who came within reach of Olympic dreams, smart and witty and utterly fearless. A week and a half before he died in a motorcycle accident at 23, he told her three times that he was invincible. Caryn believes now that in some sense he was right. His soul was invincible. It was only his body that was not. The accident happened just eight days after Caryn and her husband told their sons they were separating. It was, as she puts it, the year from hell. She remembers saying out loud to her friends that she did not think she could live through it. But Caryn had tools most people do not. As a hypnotherapist of over twenty years, she understood the power of the subconscious mind, and in the days after Josh died, she leaned on every tool she had. She also began experiencing something she never expected. Messages from Josh in the middle of the night. An unearthly peace on her deck just days after his death. A spiritual awakening she did not see coming and, by her own admission, would have dismissed as woo-woo before. What grew out of all of it was a hard-won understanding about the difference between holding on and letting go. For a long time, Caryn held Josh so tightly that she could feel him gently telling her it was time to let him run free, that he did not need her to hold on so tight anymore. Releasing that grip did not come easily. It felt, for a while, like losing him all over again. But what came after was lighter. Freer. And Josh was still there. That is the heart of everything Caryn now teaches in her hypnotherapy practice and her grief retreats. Releasing the heavy emotions, the anger, the guilt, the haunting last images that will not leave you alone, does not mean releasing your child. Caryn believes, and I believe this too, that what keeps our children close is never the pain. It is the love. The pain is simply what we are afraid to put down. Caryn now leads four day grief retreats in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where she walks grieving parents through exactly this work. Her next retreat is coming up in July, and at the time of this release, there are still a few spots remaining if you feel called to it. You can find all the details at carynbird.com/retreat. Whatever your path looks like, I hope this conversation reminds you of something important. You do not have to keep carrying the pain to keep them close. Your love already does that.

0:00 ... Ross Geiger says hello and introduces co-hosts Bruce Bernstein and Michael "World B" Freer.  Show #250 is dedicated to Trey Jemison of the Knicks, who wears #50 for the newly crowned NBA Eastern Conference Champs. 1:07 ... Knicks fan World B shares his thoughts on his team making the Finals after a 26 season drought. 2:10 ... World B had predicted the Knicks to make the Finals in his preseason picks and his aim was true! 3:39 ... Ross tees up a discussion on how the Knicks have grown so much as a team. 4:24 ... Bruce is happiest for Knicks head coach Mike Brown who has led the team to record breaking performances in the playoffs.  And they didn't really want to hire him to replace Tom Thibodeau prior to the season but all the other coaches they wanted to interview were not given permission from their teams to speak to New York about the job.   So Brown was hired by default and it was a move that has succeeded wildly. 6:16 ... World B gives Brown credit for retooling the Knicks' offensive system and he reels off the numbers that prove it. 8:47 ... Ross wonders whether the Knicks upcoming layoff (as they wait for their Finals opponent) will kill their great momentum?  Both Bruce and World B feel like the Knicks are sitting pretty.  Ross is concerned how they'll handle any offensive dry spells against the Spurs and Thunder. 13:49 ... If the Spurs beat OKC and play New York in the Finals, Bruce feels like the Knicks will use Karl Anthony-Towns to draw Victor Wembanyama away from the hoop on defense which could allow New York to operate successfully closer to the hoop. 14:48 ... Bruce marvels at how Wemby guards the entire opposing team and how God must be a Spurs fan with Wemby succeeding Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the latest generational big man in San Antonio. 16:37 ... World B reacts to the Spurs big win in game 4 with Wemby leading the way once again. 18:09 ... Bruce points out how Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has struggled offensively against the Spurs and with two key teammates like Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell battling health issues, the Spurs will continue to "throw the kitchen sink" at SGA if they miss more action.  The result will be to wear SGA down and that will mean big trouble for OKC.  Ross adds some perspective to the OKC offensive struggles. 20:11 ... World B explains how the return of De'Aaron Fox has been really important as far as the offense running smoothly.  Ross feels like game 5 is a "must win" game for the Thunder. 22:40 ... Bruce points out that all the NBA awards have been announced except for Coach of the Year and he hopes his preseason prediction of Mitch Johnson winning the award might come true with a trophy presentation prior to game 6 in San Antonio. 24:09 ... The All-NBA Teams were announced over the weekend and the crew does a lightning round commenting on all the members of the first team.  Cade Cunningham, SGA, Nikola Jokic, Wemby, and Luka Doncic make up the first team.  Bruce has a big issue with one of the first teamers. 29:31 ... The All NBA Second team consists of Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard.  The guys wondered if aging Kawhi Leonard can have another All-NBA season at age 34 after this season's great performance. 36:53 ... The All-NBA third team consists of Tyrese Maxey, Jalen Johnson, Jamal Murray, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Duren.  Duren making the third team could really affect his contract negotiations with the Pistons due to the honor making him eligible for a Super Max contract worth $48 million more than he would have qualified for had he not been honored as an All-NBA performer. 45:16 ... We examine the All Defensive teams for the season.  The first teamers are Wemby, Holmgren, Ausar Thompson, Derrick White, and Rudy Gobert.  Bruce has a summer assigmnent for Thompson. 49:29 ... The second teamers are Scottie Barnes, Cason Wallace, Bam Adebayo, OG Anunoby, and Dyson Daniels. 52:39 ... Final Thoughts: Bruce on how Wemby's main "superpower" cannot be measured by analytics.  World B on how the Orlando Magic's search for a new coach is still wide open with many potential great candidates in the mix.  Ross closes with his thoughts on two former NBA players facing off in an MMA match in Las Vegas over the weekend. 56:56 ... Ross wraps it up and says goodbye. TRT 57:13           Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

You won't believe the transformation behind this story. From a runaway teen escaping a traumatic home, to addiction to crack cocaine, being shot and living with PTSD, committing a murder that led to a potential 40-year prison sentence, and enduring 4.5 years in solitary confinement...this is the unbelievable life journey of Shaka Senghor. In this episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the resilience expert and bestselling author of How to Be Free: A Proven Guide to Escaping Life's Hidden Prisons shares the raw, unfiltered truth about the darkest moments of his life, and the mindset that helped him rebuild everything. What began in violence, addiction, and trauma ultimately led Shaka to become a global thought leader who now inspires executives, entrepreneurs, elite athletes, and audiences around the world. And the turning point? It happened inside a prison cell. Shaka Senghor breaks down: - Growing up in chaos & running away from home as a teenager - How drug culture & crack cocaine addiction nearly destroyed his life - The traumatic experience of being shot, and later discovering who pulled the trigger - PTSD & emotional trauma that followed - The night that changed everything: the murder that sent him to prison for up to 40 years - Support he wishes he had before prison - The desperate moment he tried to escape prison - The heartbreaking 4.5 years he spent in solitary confinement and other tragedies & injustices he witnessed behind bars - How literacy and journaling kept him sane - Wrestling with anger toward God & finding connection to a higher power through nature - How mentorship from older incarcerated men changed the trajectory of his life He also reveals the powerful mindset shift that transformed his life, including how he used the Law of Attraction to eventually get out of solitary confinement. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is Shaka's process of healing: - Learning to track the sources of physical & emotional trauma - Identifying emotional triggers - Releasing shame for things he wasn't responsible for - Understanding how anger often grows from suppressed shame - Concept of “weaponizing the past” and how he learned to reconcile anger for what he did, and what was done to him We're also diving deep into forgiveness in ways you've likely never heard before. Shaka shares what it meant when the godmother of the man he killed forgave him, the life-changing moment when the person who shot him apologized, how that apology helped him forgive his mother for years of abuse, and why forgiveness isn't weakness, but liberation. After finally being approved for parole, Shaka created a plan to rebuild his life from the ground up. That plan eventually led him to become a successful author and speaker, advocate for prison reform, and even develop a close friendship with Oprah Winfrey. Shaka also talks about the surreal experience of reentering society, including the technological shock of cell phones and computers, his lasting PTSD symptoms from prison, the impact incarceration has on families and loved ones (not just the inmate), and his advice for supporting someone returning home from prison. Even if you've never experienced incarceration, Shaka's story is more universal than you might think. He explains: - Why uncertainty is one of the hardest emotions humans face - How many of us live inside “hidden prisons” of fear, shame, & trauma - Why vulnerability, forgiveness, & resilience are the keys to breaking free - Why every human being deserves hope, love, joy, & success...no matter their past Shaka's mission is simple: Help people reclaim agency over what ails them and realize that freedom starts within. Freer notes that while the Commission does not favour one chemistry over another, Europe's lack of LFP manufacturing represents a genuine opportunity for local investment if LFP is to play a role in EVs and grid storage. In the interview, Freer also addresses UK energy costs, the need for an automotive OEM to anchor cell production, and the principles behind “conditional collaboration” with China. Key topics: • UK policy shift from “open for business” to active deal making • Energy cost competitiveness and site readiness • Conditional collaboration with China • Linking cathode manufacturing to EV and gigafactory investment

Episode 23 | There Is More with David WalkerIn this episode, David Walker sits down with Tress Adamy, a respected San Antonio attorney whose life story is rooted in faith, family, hard work, and nearly 150 years of South Texas ranching heritage.Tress shares what it was like growing up on a working cattle ranch near Freer, Texas — learning discipline, responsibility, and perseverance alongside his father, a quiet and resilient man who survived 3½ years in a Japanese prison camp during World War II. He also reflects on the powerful spiritual influence of his mother, whose life of prayer shaped generations and became a cornerstone of their family's faith. From small-town athletics to playing college football at Texas Tech, Tress recounts the lessons learned through competition, teamwork, and leadership. Those same principles carried him through law school and into a legal career spanning more than 40 years, where he built a reputation for integrity, fairness, and excellence in defense litigation.Throughout the conversation, Tress explains how faith informs his professional life — from hiring practices and client relationships to how he approaches justice and decision-making. He also shares how being part of a faith-centered hunting community helped redefine fellowship, accountability, and prayer outside the walls of a church. As priorities shift with age, Tress and David reflect on what truly matters: putting God first, protecting family relationships, and investing in meaningful friendships. This episode is rich with wisdom for anyone navigating career, faith, and legacy.

Vijit Katta is the CEO and co-founder at Tria, a self-custodial neobank that unifies spending, trading, and earning across all chains — without bridges, gas, or custodians. Why you should listen Vijit explains Tria's core vision as building both a protocol layer and a consumer layer that abstracts away blockchain complexity for users and businesses. He describes how the fragmentation of chains, gas fees, bridges, failed transactions, and security risks have slowed mass adoption, and how Tria's infrastructure removes these friction points across Bitcoin, EVM chains, Solana, and beyond. This foundation enabled the launch of Tria's consumer-facing product, a self-custodial neo-bank experience where users can spend, trade, and earn without needing to understand the underlying blockchain mechanics. The conversation explores Tria's early traction, including more than 50,000 users in its closed beta generating close to $100 million in transaction volume across spending, swaps, and bridges within just three months. Vijit attributes this growth to Tria's ability to seamlessly bridge real-world payments and on-chain assets, allowing users to spend thousands of supported tokens directly via cards without manual off-ramps or asset conversions. The emphasis is on maintaining full self-custody while delivering a user experience comparable to traditional Web2 banking apps. Vijit also discusses Tria's intent-based infrastructure, which routes transactions across multiple paths to reduce failure rates and improve reliability in a multi-chain environment. Rather than relying on single bridges or interoperability layers, Tria processes user intent and dynamically fulfills transactions through the most reliable route, ensuring users receive the outcome they want without being exposed to technical failures. The episode covers Tria's card offerings, including virtual and physical cards across different tiers, each unlocking varying cashback rates, trading fee discounts, and access to curated DeFi yield strategies. Vijit explains how Tria aims to surface opportunities that are typically inaccessible or too complex for everyday users, while aligning rewards and benefits with long-term usage rather than speculation. Vijit outlines his conviction that blockchain-based payment rails will ultimately replace legacy systems and envisions Tria becoming a primary bank account for millions across emerging markets within the next decade. He also touches on emerging developments such as agent-driven payments, where AI systems initiate transactions on behalf of users, and reflects on the uneven distribution of technological progress. The episode concludes with Vijit sharing his optimism for borderless, accessible finance and his belief that seamless on-chain banking is closer than most people realise. Kimmel-Kirk and the End of the Television Age: Why Free Speech Has Never Been Freer

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2025 37:27

I suspect both left and right have the Kimmel-Kirk story wrong. Rather than being about free speech versus hate speech, it's actually the story of the end of the television era and the rise of open internet platforms like YouTube and Substack. So when Keith Teare asks who is for free speech in his latest That Was The Week newsletter, what he's really saying is that free speech has never been freer. Anyone can say anything they want, he says. The only real question is whether anyone is actually listening. So the Kimmel-Kirk story is really about the shift in broadcast business models and the future of paid content. Getting fired from ABC might be the best thing that ever happened to a generic tv comic like Jimmy Kimmel. What he now needs to figure out is how to monetize his instant global fame. 1. The Cancellation Paradox Getting "canceled" from traditional media might now be a career accelerator rather than a death sentence. Kimmel has instant global recognition - the hardest thing to achieve in the creator economy - and can now build a direct audience relationship without network interference.2. Television is Already Dead (But Nobody Wants to Admit It) When late-night TV audiences are "well under 100,000 people" watching live, we're witnessing the final death throes of broadcast television as a relevant medium. The controversy feels big because it's symbolic, not because TV actually matters anymore.3. The Real Battle is Platform Independence vs. Platform Dependence The fundamental shift isn't about what you can say, but about who controls your ability to monetize what you say. Traditional media creates "intellectual codependency" between talent and publishers - breaking free requires becoming your own platform.4. Attention is the New Scarce Resource As Keith Teare notes, "anyone can say anything they want" - distribution is infinite. The challenge isn't getting a voice; it's getting an audience. Controversy, even negative controversy, solves the attention problem that most creators struggle with for years.5. Both Sides Are Fighting Yesterday's War While left and right argue about speech policing, the real action is in the economic disruption of media business models. YouTube, Substack, and other platforms are quietly becoming the new infrastructure for public discourse - making the entire "who controls traditional media" debate irrelevant.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Evny, coming out in my new book, 'Abandon The Envy for a Freer and Better Life.' Abandon envy The elements in the definition of envy are: The elements in the definition of envy are: Envy is a noun—a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck. What you want is Prabhupāda's definition. So, he says here. Prabhupāda, “Envy means the cow has got a right to live. He does not allow the cow to live. That is envy. You cannot understand this. Suppose you are walking. You have got a right to walk. I have got… if I kill you, you cannot walk. That is envious. Everyone's got a right to live, just like the camel. God has given their food. They are accustomed to eat these thorny twigs. So Krishna has given that, 'Let them eat and live.' Why you should interfere with his living condition? Do not interfere with others' right.” The Mahābhārata says, “Non-envy is always desiring the welfare of others.” That's non-envy. Sajjana-Toṣaṇī. What is envy? Are envy and love opposed to each other? “To become happy on seeing others' distress and to become distressed on seeing others' happiness is called envy. Envy and love are contradictory. Wherever there is envy, there is no question of love, and wherever there is love, there is no question of envy.” It goes on and on from there. There's a lot on envy, but I know what you're saying. There's a traditional kind of idea about it, but Prabhupāda gives it in a more existential way, that other people have their food, they have their space, they have their quota. And you think, “Why should you have your quota? I should have everybody's quota.” Like, it bugs them that other people are walking around, so they just stamp on it or kill them, or put a fence up and get rid of them. So that's how Prabhupāda mentions envy. 0:00 .... Ross hello, welcome, and introduces the crew of Bruce Bernstein and Michael "World B" Freer."  Show number 170 is dedicated to Devin Booker, who scored a career high 70 points in a loss to the Celtics back in March of 2017. 1:07 ... The NBA released the full schedule for the upcoming season and each member of the show picked three games they have "circled" on the schedule.  Bruce leads us off with an opening night matchup between the Thunder and Rockets and the return of the NBA on NBC on October 21st. 2:25 ... World B chooses Warriors/Lakers on opening night, also on NBC. 3:36 ... Ross chooses Bucks/Pacers and Myles Turner's return to Indiana as a member of the Bucks. 4:20 ... Bruce is intrigued by the first meeting between the Magic and Knicks on November 12th. 5:09 ... World B looks forward to Spurs/Mavericks on October 22nd in a matchup with Cooper Flagg and Victor Wembanyama. 6:28 ... Ross looks forward to Kevin Durant's return to Phoenix on November 24th. 7:37 ... Bruce is excited about the first matchup between the Pacers and Celtics on December 22nd. 8:39 ... World B looks forward to the Christmas Day matchup with the Cavaliers and Knicks at the Garden.  These are the likely top two teams in the east. 10:08 ... March 21st marks the Bucks visit to Phoenix as Ross looks forward to his yearly reunion with Giannis Antetokounmpo on his once a year visit to Ross' hometown. 11:09 ... The NBA and the Players Association are backing additional limitations on prop bets in the wake of gambling investigations involving Malik Beasley and Terry Rozier.  The crew examines all the angles of basketball wagering and wonders if it's possible to put the genie back in the bottle now that sports gambling has become so mainstream.  Everyone agrees that the integrity of the game can be adversely affected by gambling and the league needs to act responsibly to protect the image of the league. 21:11 ... Each panelist discusses one significant move that was made by their favorite team in the off-season.  Bruce picks the Celtics signing of Chris Boucher, the 8 year veteran who comes to Boston from Toronto. 22:33 ... World B feels the Knicks hiring of new head coach Mike Brown was a major move for the franchise.  He compares the hiring to the Yankees hiring of Joe Torre back in 1996. 25:00 ... Ross loves the Cole Anthony signing for his Milwaukee Bucks and adds that the acquisition of Amir Coffey will also be a major boost for the Bucks. 26:52 ... The Lakers will honor former coach Pat Riley with a statue on February 22nd.  The crew wonders why the Heat didn't honor him first, but all were thankful that the sculptor who did the Dwyane Wade statue in Miami isn't doing this one. 30:09 ... Bruce recounts some of the stories Lakers legend Michael Cooper told about Riles two weeks ago when he appeared on 48 Minutes.  One of the best concerned how Riley buried secret words in each player's video splits that the coach later quizzed them on. 32:33 ... Final Thoughts .... Bruce is saddened by the fact that it seems certain that Al Horford will never play another game for the Celtics.  If Big Al goes to Golden State, it's highly unlikely the Celtics will retire his #42. 34:58 ... World B talked about Major League Baseball's consideration of a realignment plan to keep the fans interested in the sport.  Adam Silver has also tried some things in the NBA with the in-season tournament an play in games.    World B praises Silver for his efforts. 38:00 ... Ross' final thought was to discuss some trades the Suns chose not to make when they dealt Kevin Durant.   Miami made an offer that the Suns turned down and everyone shared their thoughts on why Phoenix made a better deal with Houston.  Phoenix also could have made a deal where they acquired an unprotected #1 pick from New Orleans next season in the Durant deal and everyone feels like the Suns will regret not doing it. 43:06 ... Bruce shouts out to Shawn Bradley, who was paralyzed in a bike accident but appeared in public at a Big 3 game over the weekend in Dallas.  It was one of the only times he's apeared in public since his bike crash in 2021.   TRT 44:25
