Charlotte has been on my mind a lot lately. Recently, I profiled the Queen City's Emanuel Wynter in the episode “Violin's Architect of Joyous Sound: Emanuel Wynter”, which followed a recent episode on Charlotte artist Sam Tayloe of the band Time Sawyer titled “New Stages for Time Sawyer and Their Hometown Festival”. Around the time I interviewed Emanuel Wynter, I was in Charlotte on two occasions for interviews that are coming to light here, in the first of a two part series on the public TV program After Dark, the brain child of the late Bill Barnes, who launched the series on WTVI in the late 1970s, continuing through 1984. Charlotte photographer, writer and music producer Daniel Coston came into possession of the audio of performances which were the foundation for After Dark episodes, and Daniel gave me the idea for this podcast and joined in as a co-producer.This episode features interviews with former WTVI staff, members of Charlotte bands The Spongetones and Sugarcreek, as well as Daniel Coston, along with audio excerpts of performances from both aforementioned bands as well as The Fabulous Knobs and New Grass Revival, whose performance was the debut for banjo player Bela Fleck and guitarist Pat Flynn. Along the way is a good bit of history of the scene in Charlotte and the region, focusing on the late 1970s to mid 1980s, but also going back to the days of the Crazy Water Crystals Saturday Night Jamboree, a “barn dance” program on AM radio station WBT beginning in 1933. Charlotte, NC public TV station WTVI staff in 1984 Bringing After Dark and Charlotte's Music Past Back to Light, Part One Joe Kendrick Download Songs heard in this episode:“Encourage Me” by The Fabulous Knobs, live at P.B. Please take a moment and give us a top rating on your podcast platform of choice, and where you can, a review. Doing either, and especially both, boosts the ranking and therefore the visibility of this series to all the other music fans who also follow podcasts. Daniel Coston has been a previous guest on this podcast in our series titled “The Music and Culture Episode” parts one and two, and New Grass Revival members Bela Fleck, Sam Bush and John Cowan have their own episodes on this series, as well as being guests on the three part series on Green Acres Music Hall. This is Southern Songs and Stories, where our quest is to explore and celebrate the unfolding history and culture of music rooted in the American South, and going beyond to the styles and artists that it inspired and informed. - Joe Kendrick

Dan Tyminski was six years old when his parents began taking him to fiddle contests, square dances, and bluegrass festivals across New England. For a young musician who would later become one of the biggest names in modern-day bluegrass, those early experiences were life changing.“Watching live music always spoke to me much louder than sitting in front of my record player,” he remembers. “I loved it. Wherever music was being played, I wanted to go watch. Years later, I still feel that way.”Throughout his 30+ year career, Tyminski has left his mark in every corner of modern music. His voice famously accompanies George Clooney's performance of the Stanley Brothers' classic song, “I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow,” in the film, Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? and his vocal collaboration with Swedish DJ Avicii on the song “Hey Brother” was a global smash, having been streamed more than a billion times to date. His diverse solo projects and years of work with Alison Krauss and Union Station have yielded troves of award-winning music. In recent years, Tyminski's live shows with the Dan Tyminski Band have become bluegrass fan favorites and are regularly on the must-see lists among music fans of any genre. With his newest album release – the Grammy-nominated 2024 concert album Dan Tyminski: Live From The Ryman – he captures the magic of those live shows, while also proving that he still has the same passion for live music as he did when he was growing up.  His earliest touring and recording work was as a part of the band, Green Mountain Bluegrass. He later joined the influential bluegrass group, Lonesome River Band, before embarking on his three decades of work with Alison Krauss and Union Station. The first album that Tyminski recorded as a solo artist was the soul-stirring Carry Me Across the Mountain (2000), followed by the Grammy-nominated Wheels (2008) which was named the 2009 Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association.  His work with the EDM artist, Avicii, inspired Dan to create the genre-defying Southern Gothic album, released in 2017 to much critical acclaim. Tyminski would then showcase again his heart for bluegrass with the 2022 EP tribute to Tony Rice, One More Time Before You Go, which included guest performances by Molly Tuttle, Sam Bush, Dailey & Vincent, and Billy Strings. The following year saw the release of the full-length bluegrass album, God Fearing Heathen, which quickly hit #1 on Billboard's Bluegrass Albums chart.  Over the course of his career, Tyminski has also evolved into a prolific songwriter, penning songs with Monty Criswell, Phillip Lammonds, Kristian Bush, Ashley Monroe, Chris Stapleton and many others. Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards and is a four-time Male Vocalist of the Year honoree by the International Bluegrass Music Association. He has also recorded instrumental or vocal harmony contributions for projects by Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Joan Osborne, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Rob Thomas, and Charlie Haden, to name a few. Tyminski certainly represents the pinnacle of modern bluegrass music. While Dan enjoys a good conversation and a good cigar, he can often be found participating in charitable Pro-Am golf tournaments, as well as competing regularly in the Foosball tournament circuit.

Six Decades of Legacy and Love for an Ever Evolving Sound With Sam Bush

The fountain of youth could very well be located in a mandolin, or a fiddle. At least for Sam Bush, playing the mandolin, along with the occasional fiddle, seems to give him an energy level that many people several decades his junior would envy. There is a lot to be said for playing music, whatever the instrument, and its benefits for well being. Cognitively and psychologically, there is a lot of data that affirms we can benefit greatly from playing music, even from simply actively listening to music. A lot of this boils down to a fundamental truth that learning is the catalyst for positive change and growth, and we can all continue learning and picking up new skills throughout our lives. Sam Bush, like so many career music artists, embodies that spirit, and serves as a great example of the heights we can achieve when we devote our lives to reaching towards our full capabilities. Musically, Sam Bush draws from a wide spectrum of styles, ranging from bluegrass to newgrass (which he helped establish and define as a sub-genre with his former group New Grass Revival), to rock and blues with his former project Duck Butter, to having been in both Leon Russell and Emmylou Harris' bands, among many other projects. His stories are just as lively. From recounting his times with Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe to his observations about young stars like Sierra Hull and Billy Strings, to his many performances at Green Acres Music Hall, Sam Bush has many a tale to tell. We get to all of that, and get a glimpse at what he has in store in the near future as well, in a spirited conversation from backstage at the 2025 Earl Scruggs Music Festival. Of course, there is much music to highlight in this episode too, including excerpts from Sam's solo catalog, as well as the festival's namesake. Get ready, family — this week on No Simple Road, we're hanging with the one and only Larry Keel, a bluegrass legend, master picker, and true steward of the jamgrass spirit! Aaron, Mel, and Apple welcome Larry into the circle for a real, heart-forward conversation that goes way beyond the usual talk of tours and records. We dive deep into the magic of community and connection that lives inside the music — from the Northwest String Summit memories and Larry's long friendship with Yonder Mountain String Band, to the way shared stages become sacred spaces. Larry opens up about his incredible musical partnership with his wife, Jenny, and how their bond has shaped both their sound and their lives. The crew explores the evolution of bluegrass — how pioneers like Sam Bush and modern trailblazers like Billy Strings are expanding the boundaries of the genre while honoring its roots. Larry shares stories from the road and the river, including his experiences at Carnegie Hall, Japan, and his own music-meets-nature gathering, Bass and Grass. If you love bluegrass, jamgrass, or just the feeling of deep connection that music brings, this one's for you. So much of life's complexity does not exist in the answer to "what"...what do we want, what do we want to avoid, what are we after? "What" is what religion is all about. But Jesus and His Way are different. He insists the secret to life is not in "what"—it is in "how." How do we get what we want? How do we avoid what entraps us? How do we find what we're after? This past Sunday, we considered one of Jesus's stories that lays out the HOW of life. The band performed songs by Sam Bush, Ken Yates, and more.

Producer/bassist Jim Reilley will most likely be remembered as a founding member (along with musical partner Reese Campbell) of seminal folk rock band The New Dylans. Founded in 1986,the band barnstormed the US throughout the 90's and won critical praise from Rolling Stone (who called their songs “offbeat classics”) and virtually every other major music publication and major newspaper. The Village Voice placed the band in the top 5 Ep's of 1986 in their prestigious Pazz and Jop Poll. The band won the hearts and minds of many fans in the then burgeoning AAA American radio format and had several feature spots on important tastemaking radio shows including NPR's All Things Considered, Idiot's Delight with Vin Scelsa, Partridge Family Imp Danny Bonaduce's WLUP show, Mountain Stage, WXPN's World Café and Acoustic Café. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. proclaimed The New Dylans his favorite band of 1986 and Natalie Merchant (of 10,000 Maniacs) would often jump onstage and sing with the band. After 10 years of solid touring often over 175 dates a year sharing stages with many luminaries including (R&R Hall Of Famers) The Band, Reilley moved to Nashville to sign a writing and production deal with Curb Records. As a songwriter, Reilley had over 60 songs recorded by such artists as Hal Ketchum, Sam Bush, Vince Gill, Lauren Daigle, Hillary Scott, Claudia Church, Leann Rimes, Cowboy Crush, Jana Kramer, Jack Ingram, Lila McCann, Carly Pearce, John Cowsill, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Tim O'Brien and had a European hit with Danish Rock legend Peter Belli. In his career, Reilley has produced or made music with Sheryl Crow, Pam Tillis, Lee Brice, Levon Helm, Ethan Hawke, John Osborne, Brothers Osborne, The Fleshtones, Pure Prairie League, Leann Rimes, Rodney Crowell, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Atkins, Cowboy Jack Clement, Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Uncle Tupelo, Kathleen Edwards, Mary Gauthier, Superdrag, Gillian Welch, Prince's  New Power Generation, Linda Hargrove, Harlan Howard, Jim Lauderdale, Hillary Scott, Jenna Von Oy, Tommy Womack, Carly Pearce, Jana Kramer, Linda Davis, Vince Gill, Cheetah Chrome of The Dead Boys, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), The Mavericks, Jack Ingram, Tiffany, NRBQ, Patty Larkin, Dave Van Ronk, Leah Andreone, Diamond Rio, Hank Williams Jr, Jett Williams, Shel Silverstein, Townes Van Zandt, Richie Havens, Al Perkins, The Story, Kasey Chambers, Del McCoury Band, Minton Sparks, Joy Lynn White, Sam Bush, David Mead, Daniel Tashian, members of The Jayhawks, Wilco, Genesis, Cheap Trick, Buckcherry, The Milk Carton Kids, Lake Street Dive, Blondie, John Mellencamp, Foo Fighters, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Doobie Brothers, Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Joe Perry Band, The Black Crowes, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Bangles, Ben Folds, Alabama Shakes, Jack White band, Ten Years After, The Black Keys, The Band, The Beach Boys, 10,000 Maniacs, R.E.M. and more.www.producerjimreilley.com"Still on the Run" - https://www.fbrmusic.com/Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848Threads - www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographySponsorship Information/Guest Suggestions  -  ftsunashville@gmail.com

Sam Bush joins Kaya for a rousing hour of pure hilarity as they discuss Summer House and Wes' nips, problematic favs and Kaya's obsession with Jimmy Fallon. Also, Sam has Kaya in stitches about a dream she had about a certain Southern Charm cast member.  The title is also self-explanatory so please - if you aren't in the mood to be a hater come back for the next episode.
