AmericanaFest Showcase artist Cris Jacobs joins us on the show to talk about his recently released album, “One of These Days,” and how making it was like returning home. We chat about embracing the good and bad of the songwriting process and learning to be comfortable with imperfection.    Cris Jacobs lost his way. Most of us do. Part of the story is in those lost days. But more of the story is in what we find again.   For Jacobs, the last several years have been hard—and transformative. With a vote of confidence from a legend, a no. 2 pencil and scratchpad, and his acoustic guitar, he went into his barn to write and emerged with his finest album to date.  Produced by Jerry Douglas, “One of These Days” is a stunning collection of storytelling and song, rooted in bluegrass, folk and blues, but unencumbered by rules and expectations. The Infamous Stringdusters serve as the album's rollicking house band, joined by friends including Billy Strings, Sam Bush, Lee Ann Womack, the McCrary Sisters, Lindsay Lou and more. The result is unfettered, joyful virtuosity, swirling around Jacobs' powerful voice, gut-check meditations, and close-up character sketches.     See Cris at AmericanaFest:   Wednesday, September 18th a the AmericanaFest DayStage presented by NPR Music, World Café and WMOT  Friday, September 20th at his official showcaseat 11:00 PM    And check him out here:  Website: Crisjacobs.com  Instagram: Cris_jacobs  Facebook: Cris Jacobs  YouTube: @crisjacobs6183

Send us a Text Message. The River Arkansas initially formed when frontman Mike Clark (guitar, banjo, and singer-songwriter) and Macon Terry (bass) met as members of other bands in 2014, and realized soon after that they both lived in Colorado Springs. Clark and Terry ended up performing in the studio together and releasing the band's debut album, Golden Light.Terry then brought players from his own band Clouds and Mountains, Robin Chestnut (drums) and Rachel Sliker (violin), and toured the West Coast for a month before releasing the second River Arkansas album, You Animal. They've since released a third album, Any Kind of Weather, and three EPs, “Damn Good Dog,” “Waiting on the Rain,” and “Green Bridge”.Before Clark became a musician, he started as a semi-professional trials bike rider, taking his first big road trip across the West Coast at the age of 27 with a friend of his to ride their bikes and meet other riders to compete with. Clark's friend, Patrick, would play his guitar many times throughout the trip (Clark didn't know he had a guitar before this trip), and Patrick's playing inspired Clark enough that he bought a harmonica during a stop at a Seattle music shop. He practiced during the rest of the trip, and that was his first venture into music.Jack Cloonan's grandfather and father played accordion, and his father also played tenor banjo. Cloonan started playing accordion at seven years old and violin at nine, focusing on traditional Irish jigs. Around the age of fourteen, he picked up a guitar and started playing more contemporary rock tunes, such as those by Led Zeppelin. He picked up a mandolin for the first time during high school, and eventually, he found bands such as Leftover Salmon and String Cheese Incident, who took Irish tunes and fused them with American stylings. At around nineteen, he started writing his own songs, with some of his guitar influences including Doc Watson, Clarence White, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, and Jake Workman.Cloonan has also been able to spend time with banjo influence Andy Thorn from Leftover Salmon, as well as perform many times with Silas Herman, son of Vince Herman, founding member of the iconic band. Silas Herman, while also performing many times with his dad, has performed in dozens of music festivals and has shared the stage and recorded with groups and individuals such as Drunken Hearts, Terrapin Family Band with Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, and The Kitchen Dwellers (just within the last couple of months). Last week we lost Happy Traum, one of the shining lights of acoustic music for over half a century. It's hard to fully grasp, in our online world where everything is right there whenever we need it, just what an enormous contribution Happy and the Homespun team made to helping people learn roots and acoustic music.I was lucky enough to get to chat to Happy a couple of times for the podcast, and he spoke about how strongly he felt that their role was to document, as well as teach. Watching the videos they put out with Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Norman Blake and Bill Monroe (and many more) it's hard to think of a bigger contribution to documenting an era of music! To celebrate Happy's extraordinary influence, which will continue for many years through Homespun's legacy, I'm re-posting the chat I had with him for the podcast back in June of 2022. Countless people learned to play an instrument thanks to the books, tapes, videos, CDs, DVDs and downloads Homespun put out, with some of the leading names in roots music, including Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Sam Bush and many, many more.Happy shares the story of how Homespun was born, around a kitchen table, as well as memories of working with some of those iconic musicians, many of whom became friends along the way.Happy will be dearly missed by those who knew him, as well as by people like me, who didn't, but whose lives were enriched by his work.Thank you Happy!MattVisit Homespun's website to check out their extraordinary catalogue  Send a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! My guest on the podcast this week is Chris Eldridge, guitarist with Punch Brothers and Mighty Poplar.Chris is not only one of my favourite guitarists, he's also one of my favourite people I've had on as a guest, so I'm delighted to welcome him back to Bluegrass Jam Along to celebrate the podcast's 400th episode. In this special episode we're chatting about Bela Fleck's ground breaking record Drive. It's a record that's really important to Chris, and also played a key role in the early days of both The Infamous Stringdusters and Punch Brothers.Chris talks about first hearing the record, why it grabbed his attention so much and why it holds a key place in not only Bela's output, but also in the rich tradition of progressive, instrumental string band music. We also talk about the remarkable contributions made by the players Bela assembled for this record, including Sam Bush, Mark Schatz, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Mark O'Connor and, of course, Tony Rice.It was a fascinating conversation to get to have. Drive is one of my favourite records and I know it's a favourite of so many bluegrass fans and players too. Thanks Chris and here's to the next 400 episodes!Happy picking!Matt Support the Show.===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

John Oates (Hall & Oates): The Joy Of Going It Alone

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

John Oates has been at this for a while. Ever since his family moved from New York to a small town outside of Philly in the early 1950s, he has been feverishly creating American roots music, blues, rock n roll and unabashed pop. After teaming up with his Temple college mate Daryl Hall at the dawn of the 1970s - Oates co-created a mind-melting run of funky rock-pop hits that still play on constant radio rotation: 21 albums, ten of them number one records which sold over 80 million units. It's not a shock to see that Hall & Oates are technically the most successful duo in modern music history.  But Oates' half a dozen solo records are quite underrated (look to the stripped back Arkansas to see what I mean ), and with the new LP Reunion dropping this week, we see him sonically rejuvenated, leaning into his love of early 20th century acoustic music and how his family history formed who he is today.  For this listener and songwriter - getting to dive into how “Maneater”, “She's Gone”, “You Make My Dreams” was quite a thrill, but I was also moved at how generous Oates was towards the young artists he gets to work with (Sierra Hull for one) and how he has reacted to the fractious relationship with his former co-creator Daryl Hall with a sense of zen, even as the tabloids spin yarns of their many years in the making “breakup”.  While playing arenas may be in his past, Oates is excited to play intimate shows telling the humble stories on Reunion like “This Field Is Mine” which he teamed up with beloved mandolinist Sam Bush.
