Gingerbread is synonymous with the Christmas season — from the spices to gingerbread houses and gingerbread men. An 18th-century recipe — from Hannah Glasse in The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Simple in 1796 — advises bakers to: Take three pounds of flour, one pound of butter rubbed in very fine, two ounces of ginger beat fine, one large nutmeg grated, then take a pound of treacle, a quarter of a pint of cream, make them warm together, and make up the bread stiff; roll it out … Here's a 21st-century version of this holiday favorite, from Colonial Williamsburg....Article Link

It's an intriguing photograph of children playing sometime in the first part of the 20th century. Wilson County News reporter Gregory Ripps' late grandmother thankfully labeled the back of many of her family's photographs. Almost every one has names, a date, and a location. But one photo of children at play is a mystery. “Two of the children are identified by name, but I don't know who they are,” Gregory said. “They appear to be at a party, but there are no other photos of the same event.” On the back of the photo is a stamp that reads “Potchernick-Birdsong...Article Link

Editor: Twenty-nine years after retiring as a teacher from Floresville High School, I returned to serve as a trustee. In the intervening interval, I had a real estate career, medical interventions, and became a member of John Q. Public. I know how things were in 1996 and now I was being “brought up to speed.” I was delighted to see all of the infrastructure progress in the “skilled trades” — nursing, welding, cybersecurity, and auto mechanics. All were probably up to the edge of the possible in offering in a society with an overabundance of attorneys. I also noticed that...Article Link

Since President Richard Nixon declared a “War on Drugs” in 1971, federal, state and local governments have spent an estimated [post_excerpt] trillion fighting it — and losing. Donald Trump now seems fully engaged in that futile conflict, adding his own twisted brand of violence. It's not enough to bomb boats “suspected” of ferrying drugs to the United States. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the military, after the initial strike, to “kill” survivors clinging to life rafts on the waters below. Shocked lawmakers, both Republican and Democratic, are calling such actions “war crimes.” The law of war authorizes the use...Article Link

Some of these are common sense, such as poor diet. Much attention has been given to the fact that Americans are no longer eating balanced meals.
