Thanks to Clarence Ehlers for this interesting “Glimpse of the Past.” I recently came upon a document about the history of Wilson County schools by Barbara J. Editor: Re: “Best use of the military” Sept. 3 I agree that the National Guard's primary role should be as a reserve force for the active military and secondarily to provide vital support during emergencies. As to the writer's contention that there are no emergencies in cities as ICE agents as well as ATF and FBI (perhaps other law-enforcement agencies) conduct raids to arrest criminal illegals, domestic criminals colluding with illegals, drug dealers, arsonists, and professional rioters setting fires in the streets by burning cars, tires, buildings, etc., he is trying to gaslight WCN readers with nonsense. Over the years, our government has expanded dramatically, all with the objective of improving our lives. Yet, with all of this, confidence that Americans express in our country and its major institutions has plummeted. Of 18 of the nation's major institutions, per a recent Gallup survey, there are only three in which 50 percent or more now express a “great deal or quite a lot” of confidence. In 1979, an average of the 18 institutions — ranging from the military, the presidency and the Supreme Court to higher education, Congress and big business — stood at 50 percent. By 2025,...Article Link
Jury nullification is a fancy term for what it's called when juries — or, in this case, grand juries — say no. It doesn't happen very often, which is why you may have never heard of it. The old line is that a good prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich. Not so fast. Not in the District of Columbia right now, where a federal grand jury refused to indict a man for throwing a sandwich at a federal agent. It was one of three cases where a grand jury in D.C. refused to return felony...Article Link
Seeking happiness “Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” — Guillaume Apollinaire Our rights The Declaration of Independence says that all men are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” John M. Grondelski writes, “The discussion about the origin of ‘rights' often conflates situational privileges, such as the ‘right of way,' with universal, God-given, natural rights that exist independent of governments.” In other words, these are God-given rights, as opposed to rights granted only by the authority of the government. He explained that certain human rights exist prior to any...Article Link
Dear Dave, My husband and I have already started putting money aside for Christmas. Recently, we were talking about what we might get our six-year-old twins, when we decided we want to make sure they experience the giving side of Christmas this year, rather than just receiving. What are some good ideas for making sure they learn age-appropriate lessons about giving at that age? Brooke Dear Brooke, I love Christmas! And I love the way you're thinking. Everyone knows Christmas is one of the best opportunities all year to give. But too often, we get so caught up in shopping...Article Link
I wonder why people who punish a child for lying will tell the same child, “Just say I'm not home.” I wonder why people can disregard thoughtless things that are said at work, by friends, or in a store, but not if the same things are said by someone at church. I wonder why so many feel free to skip attending worship for things they wouldn't dream of skipping work to do. I wonder why it's a compliment when a man is sensitive, but an insult to say he's emotional. I wonder why people who wouldn't dream of stealing money...Article Link
