“I don't know when I've enjoyed a newspaper article more than the one that appeared in the May 21 issue of the Wilson County News, which was titled ‘Remembering a gator at Conquista crossing,'” Dale Vickers of St. Hedwig said in an email. “I am an 84-year-old reader of the Wilson County News and that story was right down my alley. “I grew up in the 1930s and am very familiar with riding in the back seat of our old Model T Ford, similar to the one in your picture. “My early years found me growing up along the banks...Article Link

Editor: I woke up on a recent Thursday morning and started another day. Decided to visit the Floresville Food Pantry & Resource Center and watch people get bags of food. As people gathered that Thursday and a prayer of thanks was given, and the bags of food and water were given out, I noticed a man loading bags into a pickup truck and was told, “Oh, that's David Trowbridge getting ready to make deliveries.” I asked David if I could tag along, and he said yes. I had been involved with a food pantry in another state and knew what...Article Link
Editor: June 5, World Environment Day, should be a reminder to us that caring for the planet is not just a one-day event, but rather a daily responsibility. With climate change, loss of biodiversity, and environmental pollution affecting communities everywhere, these issues can seem overwhelming. But there is much we can do to make a difference. Reduce, reuse, and refuse represent small gestures that add up when done collectively, like reducing plastic use, conserving water, planting native species, and avoiding food waste (plan meals, compost scraps, and donate when possible); we can support local farmers, advocate for environmental policies, and...Article Link
Editor: It has been suggested that all Christians should unite under one simple word that ultimately defines their leader. They are now divided into thousands of factions with conflicting ideas on how to make God happy and go forth into his forever joyous afterlife. By this they will fail because a house divided will not survive. Good Christians go to church, sing songs, say prayers, and pay the dues. Done deal? Nope. There is something else they are overlooking that is more important than serving themselves in the quest for the eternal party after. God, by definition, is essentially human...Article Link
CBS News thinks the crown jewel of its news division is “60 Minutes,” the alleged gold standard of investigative journalism on television. But when it comes to politics, their coverage isn't just slanted. It's more like a wrecked bus laying on its side, wheels spinning in the air. Their stilted editing of a Kamala Harris interview weeks before the election caused Donald Trump to sue last year over the potential harm to his candidacy. By that standard, Trump could sue lots of newscasters and documentarians who slice and dice presidential contenders to try and persuade voters. The Wall Street Journal...Article Link
The penny, which costs more to make than it's worth, will be going away. That's a shocking reversal of government policy. Usually, the government doesn't stop producing anything that's overpriced or just plain worthless. I'm just about old enough to remember little pieces of candy that sold for a penny at a little wooden-floored store near my house called “Mac's.” The man behind the counter was, of course, Mac. If there was a woman behind the counter, it was Mrs. Mac. I will still bend double to pick up a penny off the sidewalk, even in a snowstorm. My wife...Article Link
Property taxes What's happening to Texas? It's no longer “our Texas,” but more like New York or California if the recent session in Austin tells us anything. As Brandon Waltens reports, the state's budget has seen a staggering 43 percent increase since the 2022–23 budget. Even more staggering is that this session began with a billion surplus, yet only a smattering of that surplus went toward new property tax relief. Meanwhile, property taxes continue to increase exponentially. Voters are overtaxed, while the state protects a huge surplus. Instead of overtaxing homeowners and then dispensing a small portion of it...Article Link

St. Hedwig American Legion Post 539 held its annual barbecue picnic fundraiser May 18. We have been doing this for five decades and many of the community volunteers have also helped out since they were kids! This post is different from many posts, as it is as much a community center as it is a sanctuary for veterans. This small, historically Polish community is as full of veteran support as the flavor in our barbecue. This is the reason that so many community members step in to help raise money by volunteering numerous hours to create an authentic home-cooked barbecue...Article Link
A churchgoer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper complaining that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I've gone for 30 years now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time, and the preachers are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.” This started a conversation in the “Letters to the Editor” column, to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this...Article Link

The dust hasn't quite settled on the 2025 legislative session, but here's a sampling of bills already sent to Gov.
