Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - We're coming up to the 90th anniversary of the Vancouver Island Regional Library. In this morning's interview Beatrix Baxter, the new Circulation Supervisor at the Cortes Island branch, talks about the library, her love of books and how they are going to celebrate on Saturday, May 30th. Beatrix Baxter:  “The Vancouver Island Regional Library was established in 1936, and it started off with six library branches, 28 sub-branches, and seven van routes. Now we're up to 39 library branches and our online branch, which we say is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because you can go online anytime." “All 39 branches share what we call a floating collection. We all each hold part of the collection. When a library customer goes online to put a book on hold, the call goes out to all the branches that might have a copy of that book. The first one to respond sends the book off, and it goes through our system and ends up here on Cortes, or wherever the person is requesting it from. “I don't know how many books we have, but more than five million items are circulated annually. That's books, magazines, video games, DVDs, TV shows, audiobooks — it's everything that we have, which is actually quite a lot.” Origins of the Cortes Island Library Narrator: The first Cortes Islands Library is actually one year older than the Vancouver Island Regional Library. Beatrix Baxter: "The first library that Cortes had was started by the Whaletown Women's Institute in 1935. They were gifted or negotiated the use of the Farmers Institute building, which we now know as the Louise Tucker Library. That's our longest running library. The Whaletown School had a library at some point." "When Manson's Hall underwent a major renovation in 1980, they expanded it to include the space for the post office and the play school and the library. So we were up in the top floor of Manson's Hall for many years." Cortes Island Joins the Vancouver Island Regional Library System "May Ellingsen ran things over there before the museum was established. She used to keep all of her famous photo albums at the library. I don't know when it became part of the Vancouver Island Regional Library, but she was instrumental in making that happen." “In 2009–2010, a structural engineering assessment of the building found that it was no longer safe to house the weight of the books in that room. There were simply too many books. There was a lot of community engagement at the time. A lot of people were really concerned that we weren't going to have a library.”" The Move to Linnaea “They were looking for a new location for at least a couple of years, and in 2012 they made a new arrangement with Linnaea to use the space that had been the former Linnaea school. The building was renovated, and by November 2013 the library had moved into the new space and was open to the public again. “We added a self-checkout machine, which made lineups shorter — one of the concerns residents had about the old location. We've also gotten more hours over the years, which is great. We changed our hours in September, adding an extra evening and another daytime shift, so you're more likely to be able to drop by and find that the library is open.” Narrator: Jude Marentette was the circulation supervisor when the library moved from Manson's Hall to its present location in the Linnaea Education Centre, but she retired last fall. Beatrix has been the librarian since December 2025.

60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Walking Across America in My 90th Year

Hello to you listening in Dublin, New Hampshire! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Imagine this: It's February 1998. You are 89 years old. You have arthritis and emphysema. You live in a small town in New Hampshire. You laid to rest your husband of 65 years after caring for him with Alzheimer's the last 10 years of his life. Your best friend of 50 years has also died. Now what, asks your son? What will you do? I have an idea, you say. Money is the big divider between people and politics. The tycoons with the money are buying the politicians and making all the decisions. Someone has to tell the American people about the need for national campaign finance reform. I can do that. How, your son wants to know. I'll go on a walk. And so she begins getting in shape walking 2 miles a day, 5 miles a day, 10 miles a day, and carrying a backpack. After 7 months she declares herself ready to go on a walk and tells her son she is starting in Los Angeles, California. After collecting petitions on a beach in Los Angeles Doris Haddock, a.k.a. Granny D begins 14-month walk across America through California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Arkansas and on up to Washington, DC. She has no GoFundMe account or any real plan except to get out and talk to as many people as she can about the need for campaign finance reform. My friend Granny D eats with the people she walks with along the way, sleeps in a spare bedroom, on a couch or in a church basement. She gives talks about national campaign finance reform at rodeos, county fairs, schools, and local gatherings. 10 miles a day, every day, walking across America in her 90th year. By the time Granny D arrives in Washington, DC a blizzard has blocked traffic so she cross-country skies to the Capital to meet then Senators McCain & Feingold who sponsored the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform Act which will become law 2 years later in 2002. The primary purpose of the Act was to eliminate the increased use of so-called soft money to fund advertising by political parties on behalf of their candidates.     Of her walk Granny D always had her doubts; but she persisted. Here we are 25 years later and deeper in soft-money shit than she could have imagined thanks to the bought and paid for SCOTUS decision in Citizens United that equated money with free speech, kicked open the floodgates to a tsunami of dark money, and tilted political influence toward wealthy donors tycoons, and corporations.     I knew Granny D, we wrote letters back and forth. Sometimes I wonder: What was the point? What difference did 14 months of walking and talking do? I'll tell you. It did this: I'm still talking about her and the wild possibility that she actually realized. She was one Ordinary Person who took up a cause she believed in, talked to thousands of people as she walked across America in her 90th year and kept on talking until she died at the age of 100. Like every good story Granny D lives on to inspire, motivate, and remind each of us - young and old - what we are capable of, what we can achieve before and even after our 90th year.   Yes! we are Ordinary Persons standing shoulder to shoulder with other Ordinary Persons drawn together like filings to a magnet building an Army of Ordinary Persons to Free America, unbalance the status quo, and create a Citizen's Future of hope, dignity, and inclusion. We are the stories of light we struggle to write in these dark times and will be proud to share with those we leave behind when we walk on.   Story Prompt: Who are you? What is your declaration of wild possibility? How are you shaping the future for good? Write that story and share it out loud ! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards! Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognising those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 90th Academy Awards. The event celebrated all the films released in the year of 2017. The event was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 4th 2018. The host was Jimmy Kimmel. He had hosted the year before. The 90th Annual Academy Awards was a year after the La-La Land/Moonlight Best Picture fiasco. It was the year when Guillermo Del Toro's film The Shape Of Water won 4 Oscars, it was nominated for 13. Timothée Chalamet, at that point 22, was the third youngest person to nominated in an acting category. Greta Gerwig was nominated for Best Director for Lady Bird, the 5th female filmmaker to be nominated in that category. Jordan Peele was the first African American to win Best Original Screenplay. Rachel Morrison became the first woman nominated for Best Cinematography. It was the year of genre films. Slowly but surely, the Academy is slowly starting to acknowledge and award Oscars and nominations for horror films and other genre films of that ilk. We head back in our time machine to right the wrongs of this year. In our opinion, who should have won? Listen to the episode and find out who we think should have won. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. In this episode, we begin with Chris Walkland's latest milk market report before celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Oxford Farming Conference with insights from OFC Director Ali Capper and dairy farmer Tracey Roan, who is based in Dumfries and Galloway. We delve into the report “UK Farming: Grasping the Opportunities,” led by Dr. Louise Manning, which explores the future of UK agriculture and the key interventions needed to help farming businesses thrive. We also highlight how any family business looking ahead should consider involving independent people to strengthen long term decision making. Throughout the discussion, Becki Reay joins the conversation, offering reflections and perspective as we unpack the conference's core themes, including the sector's resilience and the value of strong networks within the farming community. Helllooooo and welcome to the New Year! To kick things off, we are reviewing a brand new bottle that commemorates the 90th anniversary of Heaven Hill. For the last nine decades, Heaven Hill has been a family owned, independent company and they are one of the biggest names in bourbon. To celebrate this milestone, the 90th Anniversary bourbon is a blend of 9 year bourbon (some aged in heavy char barrels) and comes in at 107 proof. Packaged in a nice box and rustic sheik bottle that mimics what we've seen in previous special releases, this bottle appears to have everything that enthusiasts are looking for. But how does it taste? You might be surprised at what we think about this one. Also, listen closely as this episode features a special mystery guest host. --------------------------SocialsIG: https://www.instagram.com/themashupkyFB: https://www.facebook.com/themashupkyYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@themashupkyJoin our community on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheMashUpBourbonPodcastPartnership(s)Visit Bourbonoutfitter.com and enter code THEMASHUP for a special discount or visit bourbonoutfitter.com/THEMASHUPMusic: All the Fixings by Zachariah HickmanThank you so much for listening!

This week Saturday Mornings Show” host Glenn van Zutphen and guest co-host Steve Okun, CEO, APAC Advisors welcome Melinda Murphy, General Manager of the American Association of Singapore (AAS), to share an inspiring initiative marking a milestone year. In 2026, AAS celebrates the 90th George Washington Ball—one of Singapore’s longest-running galas—while also launching 90 Acts of Charity, a year-long campaign dedicated to community service. From supporting Singaporean families in need to uplifting local projects and performing small acts of kindness, these 90 acts embody the heart of AAS: service, generosity, and connection. The initiative also honors Singapore’s 60th anniversary, weaving together heritage and community in meaningful ways. Melinda highlights how the George Washington Ball, themed Singapore Splendor this year, continues to unite Americans, Singaporeans, and international friends for an evening of dining, music, auctions, and camaraderie. Beyond the glamour, proceeds sustain AAS’s programs that strengthen ties across cultures and support charitable causes.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
