This episode is a conversation with Lara Scott, a visual artist living in upstate New York. We begin by talking about Lara's background, with the conversation centering around her thoughts on growing up in a mixed family: the families of both her mother and father have been multi-ethnic/multi-racial going back many generations. The conversation then turns to current events. Among other things, we discuss whether the notion of whiteness needs to be retired (and what that means) and the Black Lives Matter movement. Our conversation was recorded on July 25, 2020. If you would like to provide feedback or let me know that you'd like to come on the podcast for a conversation, you can contact me at hangingquestionmarks@gmail.com. Here is a list of people, readings, websites, and quotes that Lara selected as being relevant to our conversation: People: Jessica B. Davenport, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi Readings: Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class, by Lawrence Otis Graham; Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination, by Toni Morrison Websites: http://occupywallst.org/ — https://www.poorpeoplescampaign.org/ — https://blacklivesmatter.com/ Quotes: “The world found nothing sacred in the abstract nakedness of being human.” Hannah Arendt, quoted by Lyndsey Stonebridge “Identity would seem to be the garment with which one covers the nakedness of the self: in which case, it is best that the garment be loose, a little like the robes of the desert, through which one's nakedness can always be felt, and, sometimes, discerned. This trust in one's nakedness is all that gives one the power to change one's robes.” James Baldwin, from The Price of the Ticket: Collected Nonfiction, 1948-1985 "Oh, yes, they do. We have a fantastic time as we try to figure out, 'And now, what are the new songs, and what are the new words?' For instance, let me just mention one word that we've been working with lately. I've been on a campaign encouraging people as we think about the beloved community to stop using this word 'minority,' that there is something negative about that terminology because it always suggests that somebody else is the majority. The fact is, we are all now creating a new majority. We are all part of this beloved community. In community, the concept of minority simply doesn't work. You don't have a minority in a family. So we have got to get new words, new songs, new possibilities for ourselves." Game of Thrones is Still Keeping Me Up At Night and Here’s Why

Like millions of people around the world I was disappointed with the ending to Game of Thrones. Not enough to sign a petition or cancel my HBO. But enough that it's been keeping me up at night. I've been running the story lines around in my head about what could have been, or should have been. It doesn't help that I look at Twitter to see what other fans are feeling and seeing all of fan theories being shared that make a lot of sense. So when my friend Lara Scott from K-EARTH 101 invited me to her studio to air our grievances about the final season and final episode I jumped at the chance. Not just to go talk with her about one of my favorite shows, but to see the inside of her radio station. It's been 20 years since I worked in radio and I wanted to see how much has changed. And let me tell you, not much has! Things are more digital now, but the basics of DJ and mic, tossing to songs, hitting your post... all of that is the same. Radio is a classic form of entertainment and it's good to see that it's still going strong. While I was in the studio at Radio.com, I bumped into my friend Allie MacKay who's on the Kevin and Bean morning show at KROQ. We used to work together at KTLA and had a brief moment of bonding when we realized we didn't have to work there anymore. Yay! I love the  people at KTLA (most of them) but it was a sweat shop. I worked my butt off, often not having time for a potty break or snack break, because the amount of news they put on the air is ridiculous. Anyway, it was great to see Allie! But on to Game of Thrones and the wrap/recap I did with Lara. I loved sharing our fan theories and scene breakdowns because she's as a big of a fan as I am. You have to listen to this episode and tell me if you agree with our assessment of the finale and what you would have done differently. Or if you're over it. I'm almost there. Almost... You can also listen to Lara middays on K-EARTH 101 or on Radio.com and follower her on Instagram @larascottmedia.

I don't know why I'm still surprised, but every week when I interview someone new I get another mom crush. Lara Scott is no exception. She is a bright light and I'm mad that I didn't meet her sooner. She is so easy to talk to and a great listener, both are qualities that make her an outstanding radio host for K-EARTH 101. Lara got started in radio at the age of 17 in Bend, Or. She and a friend thought the local morning DJ sounded cute (I can relate), so her friend dared her to call the station. She wound up asking if they were hiring and got a job. If all jobs were just that easy! Cut to many moons later and she is the midday jockey at K-Earth 101, the top radio station in LA. I had the pleasure of co-hosting a special sneak preview of the movie "Wonder Park" with Lara and K-Earth and was so struck by her kindness. We have been exchanging messages on social media for months so it was a thrill to finally hang out with her in person. She tells me how becoming a mom changed her outlook on her career, and how accommodating her employer was when she was pregnant. If only more would be that amazing! We bonded over mom life in the entertainment business and realized we have a ton of things in common. You'll have to listen to find out just how similar we are! You can follow Lara and her adventures as a radio DJ, Disney fan and mama on her Instagram @LaraScottmedia.

The story is centered around 9/11….and yet there are some very funny moments…it’s really beautifully done and not disrespectful at all…everyone that I could see around us seemed old enough to remember 9/11, and we all have so many stories around that—after the show, you and I were talking about where we were and what we were doing when we found out the first plane hit the world trade center…so there is a lot of emotion around this. And ultimately, the message is that out of tragedy something beautiful can be created. We are convinced you cannot see this show and NOT be changed when you walk out.
