Connor and Dylan are joined by Grammy Award nominee Brent Comer (The Outsiders, Les Misérables). Celebrating over a year playing Darrel Curtis in the Tony-winning Best Musical, Brent opens up about how his experience with the show has changed over time, ways he's keeping it fresh, and gives insight into his relationship with co-star (and friend of the pod) Jason Schmidt. We get into Outsiders lore, including Patrick Swayze's OG impact as Darrel, Tulsa, and the language of violence in the musical. Brent also reveals his favorite part of every single performance of The Outsiders. Star Wars, The White Lotus, and The Last of Us are discussed at length, as well as Brent's love of documentaries. Respect is put to Miley's “More to Lose” (the LIVE version, mama!), and Ransom Canyon on Netflix is teased. You've been warned. Are you curious about tattoos, Angelina Jolie, and the Broadway season at LARGE? Brent as Stanley Kowalski, George Seurat, or Sweeney Todd??? Stay until the end, y'all. In this episode, we dive into one of the most groundbreaking musicals in Broadway history: Company. More than half a century ago, in 1970, Company burst onto the scene and forever changed the landscape of musical theatre. With both music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, already renowned for his work on West Side Story and Gypsy, this show marked his first collaboration with legendary director Hal Prince. Company introduced audiences to Robert, a perpetually single man navigating love, commitment, and connection through a series of vignettes rather than a traditional linear plot. This “concept musical” broke new ground, blending sharp social commentary with an unforgettable score that includes songs like “Being Alive,” “Getting Married Today,” and “The Ladies Who Lunch.” It earned 14 Tony nominations and won six, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, cementing Sondheim's place as a musical theatre titan. From its original 705-performance run to its acclaimed revivals in 1995, 2006, 2018, and 2021, Company remains as vital, funny, and thought-provoking as ever. Check out our Company playlist on our YouTube channel, and join us over on our Facebook and Instagram pages to tell us what you think!

When Hamilton premiered off-Broadway on February 17, 2015, it created an instant sensation, making American history genuinely exciting for modern audiences, and transforming Broadway with his color-blind casting. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda built on the blending of hip-hop and traditional Broadway musical styles that he brought to bear on In the Heights to tell the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and the birth of our nation. The show was nominated for 16 Tony Awards, winning 11 of them including Best Musical, and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama; its original Broadway cast recording peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and reached No. 1 on the Billboard rap albums chart. Now, 10 years after its debut, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to back to the room where it happened as we determine the Best Hamilton Song. Songs discussed include: “Satisfied,” “It's Quiet Uptown,” “Dear Theodosia,” “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story,” “Alexander Hamilton,” “Wait For It,” “What'd I Miss?” “You'll Be Back,” “Burn,” “Non Stop,” “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” “Helpless,” “The Schuyler Sisters,” “One Last Time,” “The Room Where It Happened,” “My Shot.” Join host Eric Rezsnyak, GPCD panelists Gary Jackson and Joelle Boedecker, and Patreon sponsor Kathy Kingsley as they discuss 16 of the most beloved songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. This conversation with Ani DiFranco appeared in issue #85 of Rattle and was recorded on May 23, 2024. We talked about the relationship between poetry and music, creativity and the subconscious, trauma, public cancellation and more. Widely considered a feminist icon, Grammy winner Ani DiFranco was one of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. While she has been known as a Folksinger, her music has embraced punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul, electronica, and even more distant sounds. Her most recent album is Unprecedented Sh!t. Her memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream was a New York Times Top 10 best seller, and her debut children's book The Knowing is out now. DiFranco was starring on Broadway as Persephone in the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical, Hadestown, when this interview was conducted. Find more at: https://anidifranco.com

Everybody look around, there's reason to rejoice! "The Wiz," the Tony Award®-winning Best Musical that took the world by storm in 1975 is back. Based on L. Frank Baum's children's book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," "The Wiz" returns home to the stage with an all-new adaptation. This beloved Broadway musical sets Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz to a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul music. Dorothy, a restless Kansas farm girl eager to see the world, is transported by a tornado to a magical world of Munchkins, witches and a yellow brick road. On her way to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz, who she believes can help her get back home to Kansas, she encounters the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion — friends who help her battle the Wicked Witch of the West and eventually learn that there is “no place like home.” Director Schele Williams and cast members Nichelle Lewis, Avery Wilson, Phillip Johnson Richardson & Kyle Ramar Freeman make up the panel. Stephen Cole is back on StoryBeat for the second time. An award-winning writer of musical theatre, non-fiction books, short stories, and novels, Stephen's work has been recorded, published, and produced worldwide, from New York City to London to the Middle East and Australia. With Matthew Ward he wrote the musicals After The Fair, Merlin's Apprentice, Rock Odyssey, and Casper (which originally starred Chita Rivera), The Night of the Hunter and Saturday Night at Grossinger's (with music by Claibe Richardson), and Dodsworth and Time After Time (with music by Jeff Saver), which has recently been revived at the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati. In 2005 Stephen and composer David Krane were commissioned to write the first American musical to premiere in the Middle East. The result was Aspire, which was produced in Qatar. Their hilarious cross-cultural experiences resulted in another show titled The Road To Qatar! which has been produced in Dallas, New York and the Edinburgh International Festival (where it was nominated for Best Musical). His most recent musical, Goin' Hollywood, was produced in 2023 to rave reviews and sold-out audiences in Dallas.Stephen has written continuity, narration, and special material for fifteen different Drama League Shows including all-star tributes to Kander and Ebb, Liza Minnelli, Chita Rivera, Liz Smith, Peter Stone, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald and Neil Patrick Harris. As an author, Stephen has published That Book About That Girl, I Could Have Sung All Night: the Marni Nixon story (which is currently in development as a feature film), Noel Coward: A Bio Bilbliography, and the Charles Strouse memoir Put On a Happy Face. A prolific short story writer, Stephen's first novel Mary & Ethel…and Mikey Who? was published in January 2024. I've read Mary & Ethel…and Mikey Who? It's what's you call a real hoot, especially for lovers of old broads on old Broadway. It's the most entertaining time-slipping story I've read since Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five.Stephen is a recipient of a Gilman-Gonzales Falla Commendation for musical theatre as well as the prestigious Edward Kleban Award. www.stephencolewriter.orghttps://www.facebook.com/steve.cole.5076798 https://www.instagram.com/stephencolewrit
