Hailed as a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary” by The New Yorker, Ingrid Laubrock has evolved a distinctive, fascinatingly complex and richly layered sonic vocabulary that spans her efforts as an improviser, as leader of her own diverse ensembles or, as in the case of her captivating new album Purposing The Air, as composer and conceptualist for other musicians.Out April 11, 2025, Purposing The Air marks yet another adventurous exploration in a career marked by bold innovations. The album continues Laubrock's engagement with the voice, following the blend of orchestra and choir on Contemporary Chaos Practices (2018). Purposing the Air is an expansive collection of 60 miniatures setting the words of poet Erica Hunt and her emotionally incisive piece “Mood Librarian – a poem in koan.” Approaching the poem's succinct two- or three-line fragments as separate compositions, Laubrock tailored each of them for one of four duos: vocalist Fay Victor with cellist Mariel Roberts, vocalist Sara Serpa with pianist Matt Mitchell, vocalist Theo Bleckmann with guitarist Ben Monder, and mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway with violinist Ari Streisfeld, aka the contemporary classical music ensemble Duo Cortona.While she's never before so fully integrated words and voice into her work, Laubrock has enjoyed a lifelong appreciation for poetry and literature. Her father was a Goethe scholar, while her mother instilled a love for language in her children from an early age. During the early years of her career in London, Laubrock was a member of the Brazilian-influenced band Nois 4, which featured the Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos as well as vocal contributions by Laubrock herself.Support the show

Dopo le puntate che abbiamo dedicato a novità dell'etichetta svizzera in agosto-settembre, torniamo sulla Intakt con uscite degli ultimi mesi dello scorso anno. Tra i musicisti che nella Intakt hanno trovato un interlocutore che li ha valorizzati in maniera sistematica c'è la sassofonista tedesca e newyorkese di adozione Ingrid Laubrock (a sue uscite con la Intakt avevamo dedicato anche tutta una puntata di Jazz Anthology del dicembre 2019): della Laubrock la Intakt ha adesso pubblicato il doppio cd Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt, il cui gli stessi brani sono interpretati sia da un piccolo gruppo che da una orchestra da camera più alcuni soliti. Con registrazionei dal vivo fra il 2009 e il 2017, The Deceptive 4 è il sesto album del gruppo Snakeoil del sassofonista Tim Berne, da una decina d'anni a questa parte una delle proposte più consistenti e coerenti del jazz più avanzato. In It's About Time, rivive Om, quartetto svizzero formato da nomi ben noti dell'avanguardia svizzera (Urs Leimgruber, Christy Doran, Bobby Burri, Fredy Studer), che con una musica sospesa fra jazz e rock ebbe un bel momento fra anni settanta e primi ottanta. Registrato dal vivo al festival Unerhoert nel 2019, Zurich Concert è un avvincente live che ci fa apprezzare la brillante intesa - malgrado si trattasse di una prima volta - del trio del chitarrista svizzero Dave Gisler con la trombettista americana Jaimie Branch, una delle figure di punta dell'avanguardia di oggi.

Eigensinnig ist vielleicht das passende Wort, um den Weg der Saxophonistin Ingrid Laubrock zu beschreiben. Geboren in der deutschen Provinz, hat sie immer das Abenteuer gesucht, zog mit 19 nach London und zwanzig Jahre später nach Brooklyn. Auch musikalisch beschritt sie nie den Weg des geringsten Widerstandes, wenn es zu bequem wird, bricht Laubrock aus und wagt Neues. Sie improvisiert, komponiert für grosse Besetzung und stellt sich jeder musikalischen Herausforderung. Mittlerweile ist Ingrid Laubrock kreativer Mittelpunkt einer Szene, die den Jazz von heute spielt und den von morgen erfindet.

Bei Ingrid Laubrock ist die Biographie wie die Musik. Da kommen Dinge zusammen, die auf den ersten Blick kaum zusammenpassen. Und dann nimmt sie ihr Saxophon und spielt einen möglichen Weg. Wie soll eine junge Frau aus der deutschen Provinz in London Fuss fassen? Indem sie als Strassenmusikerin beginnt, an der Guildhall School of Music studiert und dort die Brasil-Szene kennenlernt. So entstehen erste Aufnahmen. Wie kommt sie nach New York? Indem sie den arrivierten US-Schlagzeuger Tom Rainey kennenlernt und mit ihm nicht nur ein famoses Free-Trio gründet, sondern ihm auch über den grossen Teich folgt. Kurz: Wo sich Chaos auftut, wird Ingrid Laubrock erst richtig warm. Was sie sonst noch alles auszeichnet, und warum es sich definitiv lohnt, bei der gerade mal 50jährigen Laubrock schon jetzt eine Bestandesaufnahmen zu machen, das diskutiert der Saxophonist Omri Ziegele in der Jazz Collection mit Jodok Hess.

In questa puntata ritroviamo in album pubblicati dalla Intakt due musicisti di cui lo scorso anno avevamo presentato precedenti album usciti con l'etichetta svizzera. In una puntata (dicembre 2019) avevamo considerato tre album Intakt con denominatore comune la presenza della sassofonista tedesca, newyorkese di adozione, Ingrid Laubrock. Uno era in duo con la pianista giapponese Aki Takase: ecco ora Ingrid Laubrock di nuovo nella formula del duo con un pianoforte, in questo caso con la pianista canadese Kris Davis. In un'altra puntata (marzo 2019) avevamo invece presentato Iron into Wind, piano solo di Alexander Hawkins, che con la Intakt aveva pubblicato anche Uproot, il suo quartetto con la vocalist Elaine Mitchener. È estremamente positivo che un musicista giovane e dinamico come Hawkins trovi un interlocutore non occasionale in una etichetta come la Intakt: eccolo adesso in Shards and Constellations, duo con la violoncellista Tomeka Reid, una delle figure più interessanti espresse dalle ultime generazioni dell'AACM di Chicago.

She’s made a number of excellent albums as a leader and as a solo artist, and is also a member of groups like Paradoxical Frog with Ingrid Laubrock and Tyshawn Sorey, and Anti-House with Laubrock, Mary Halvorson, John Hébert and Tom Rainey. I saw that group perform at the Vision Festival at Roulette in Brooklyn back in 2012, and they’ve got three albums which are all worth your time. She also recently joined a group formed by cornet player Rob Mazurek, with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Chad Taylor, for his Desert Encrypts festival in Marfa, Texas, and they’ve released a live recording, Desert Encrypts Vol. 1.
