Are You Ready to Scale? Hard Financial Truths Every Wedding Pro Should Know

Master Certified Wedding Planner, Certified Educator and Co-Founder of The Event Ledger, Matt Mitchell joins the CWP Society's COO, Krisy Thomas for this episode of the Wedding Planner Pro Files to talk about a topic that's often glamorized but rarely unpacked with honesty—scaling your wedding planning business. Together, they dive deep into what sustainable growth really looks like, and why it's not always about doing more, but doing better. The wedding industry buzzes constantly with talk about scaling, but few stop to ask whether your business is truly ready for growth. Matt shares a refreshing perspective: sometimes, the smartest move isn't expanding, but strengthening your foundation first."Being fully booked doesn't automatically mean your business is thriving," Matt reveals, identifying the three common culprits that drain profitability for wedding planners: underpricing services, maintaining unprofitable packages, and taking on too many time-intensive projects with inadequate returns. This reality check resonates with planners who find themselves working constantly yet wondering where the profits have gone. The conversation digs into practical financial foundations every wedding business needs before scaling—from deposit structures and payment terms to revenue goals and expense forecasting. Matt walks through the critical process of conducting pricing audits, suggesting that planners regularly evaluate which services actually bring both profit and joy. "If you're dreading when someone books a particular package," he notes, "why are you still offering it?"Perhaps most surprising is Matt's perspective on marketing and team building. Rather than immediately hiring associate planners when feeling overwhelmed, he suggests first outsourcing tasks that don't require your expertise but consume significant time—like administrative work or bookkeeping. Similarly, before investing heavily in advertising, ensure your message and offerings are completely dialed in. "Ads simply amplify what you're already doing," Matt explains. "They can't fix fundamental issues with your service offerings."The episode concludes with guidance on avoiding burnout and unnecessary expenses—both silent profit-killers in the wedding industry. By adopting what Matt calls a "profit first mindset," planners can make intentional decisions about where to invest resources for maximum impact.Ready to build a more financially sound wedding planning business? Send us your thoughts! Hailed as a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary” by The New Yorker, Ingrid Laubrock has evolved a distinctive, fascinatingly complex and richly layered sonic vocabulary that spans her efforts as an improviser, as leader of her own diverse ensembles or, as in the case of her captivating new album Purposing The Air, as composer and conceptualist for other musicians.Out April 11, 2025, Purposing The Air marks yet another adventurous exploration in a career marked by bold innovations. The album continues Laubrock's engagement with the voice, following the blend of orchestra and choir on Contemporary Chaos Practices (2018). Purposing the Air is an expansive collection of 60 miniatures setting the words of poet Erica Hunt and her emotionally incisive piece “Mood Librarian – a poem in koan.” Approaching the poem's succinct two- or three-line fragments as separate compositions, Laubrock tailored each of them for one of four duos: vocalist Fay Victor with cellist Mariel Roberts, vocalist Sara Serpa with pianist Matt Mitchell, vocalist Theo Bleckmann with guitarist Ben Monder, and mezzo-soprano Rachel Calloway with violinist Ari Streisfeld, aka the contemporary classical music ensemble Duo Cortona. While she's never before so fully integrated words and voice into her work, Laubrock has enjoyed a lifelong appreciation for poetry and literature. Her father was a Goethe scholar, while her mother instilled a love for language in her children from an early age. During the early years of her career in London, Laubrock was a member of the Brazilian-influenced band Nois 4, which featured the Brazilian singer Mônica Vasconcelos as well as vocal contributions by Laubrock herself.Support the show

Or is economic freedom just about making more money—it's about creating opportunities for people to live better, freer lives? In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Matt Mitchell, an economist passionate about promoting human freedom. He's a Senior Fellow at the Centre for Economic Freedom. Together, we'll tackle big questions about global success stories, the power of freedom, and how the U.S. can learn from others who are getting it right. This conversation with Dr. Matt Mitchell dives into what makes economies thrive and why economic freedom is about so much more than financial success. From Estonia's remarkable turnaround to states like Texas leading the way in the U.S., the evidence is clear: economic freedom works.

Award winning vibraphonist Yuhan Su is another Gary Burton/Chick Corea-inspired musician, lured away from classical to the art form where improvisation reigns, jazz. This Taiwanese-born, New York based artist, left her homeland pursuing a jazz education at Berklee College of music, a frequently told story. Yuhan Su draws on her strengths to survive the intense transitions as a single woman migrating to the US to learn a completely different style of music, knowing no one, new to the language and cultures. And she plays the vibraphone, not an easy instrument to lug around given she's carless.  Yuhan is an avid composer whose quality was recently recognized in Taiwan with the Golden Melody Award, the Taiwan-equivalent of the Grammy. Yes, a big deal! She won it for the composition “Hi-Tech Pros and Cons” from her recent album, Liberated Gesture. In this episode, we talk about these topics among others that delve into her compositions, her passion for composing, themes reflecting personal experiences and social issues. And, of course, there's music, this time from Liberated Gestures (Sunnyside Records). The Yuhan Su Quintet includes: Yuhan Su-vibraphone, Matt Mitchell-piano, Caroline Davis-alto saxophone & poetry reading (“She Goes to a Silent War), Marty Kenney-acoustic bass/electric bass, and Dan Weiss-drums. The episode opens with “Hi-Tech Pros and Cons” (6:27), you'll hear “She Goes to a Silent War” (poetry read by Caroline Davis) about two-thirds into the conversation, then close with “Siren Days (7:31). Thank you for listening to Strictly Jazz Sounds. Enjoy and listen to live jazz. Steve Braunginn Photo by TeFan Wang

It's a special bonus episode of NO ENCORE in honour of Taylor Swift releasing 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department and everyone having an online meltdown about it. One such major talking point emerged via American publication Paste Magazine, which opted to withhold the name of the writer when publishing its review of The Tortured Poets Department. The move provoked a lively reaction and a lot of debate, from critics, commentators, and hardcore Swifties alike. On this episode, Dave Hanratty speaks with Paste's Music Editor Matt Mitchell to learn about what went into the decision-making process, and hear Matt's take on the state of music criticism in 2024, particularly with regard to the online hardcore fan bases that seek to police it. Dave also sits down with Clare Martin, Assistant Comedy Editor at Paste, who reviewed Taylor Swift's Lover album in 2019 and subsequently received threats of violence because of it. Clare reflects on her experience, and gives her thoughts on Paste's call to anonymise their latest critique of the biggest name in music today. Don't forget, you can get this and every new NO ENCORE episode 24 hours early and ad-free, AND additional bonus audio content by signing up to Patreon.com/NOENCORE.-Paste Magazine's WebsiteFollow Matt Mitchell on XFollow Clare Martin on XView Paste Magazine's Tweet about The Tortured Poet's Department reviewRead Paste Magazine's review of Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Dan Weiss a joué notamment auprès de Lee Konitz, Chris Potter, Sylvie Courvoisier, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Linda May Han Oh, John Zorn. On pourrait s'écrier « Aux abris ! This meta-horror (watch out, A24!) takes us into multiple layers of references as teen protagonists Sloan and Allyson manifest their horrific encounter by watching the original PRAY film while spending the night in the actual house where it was shot. We learn in PRAY 3 that this house is still inhabited by the series's original “final girl,” Laurie Curtis (an obvious reference to HALLOWEEN's protagonist Laurie, portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis). When Laurie leaves for the evening to go on a dinner date with her husband, she can't imagine the horror that threatens her hired babysitters in her absence. Christian horror is always novel because it's interesting to see how a devoutly Christian DIY filmmaker will have to circumvent the obvious obstacles that would prevent their film from being G-rated while still being influenced by their favorite secular horror films. The PRAY series uses a lot of bloodless fake outs, silly jump scares, and closeups of wholesome Halloween decorations to remind us that although Halloween can be scary, there is no evil in the world that can defeat God's love. PRAY 3 also manages to sneak in a direct warning to teens that there is absolutely no reason for young men and women to spend any time together unless accompanied by an adult. This Halloween, the scares are close to home, but our morals are more powerful than ever!
