On the surface, what the wellness industry is offering feels like an antidote to our fragmented and fast-paced lives. Influencers and companies use words like "mindfulness" or “whole foods” or “self care” to get our stressed out, burnt out buy in. But, somewhere along the line those promises start to morph into luxury services, expensive memberships and supplements you never knew you needed. In her book “How to Be Well” former fashion journalist Amy Larocca explores the blurred line between healing and branding in a $6 trillion dollar industry. We discuss:Why our current wellness craze mirrors 1930s pre-Nazi GermanyHow Abraham Flexner completely changed how we teach medicine in the US for better – and for worseWhy the spiritual and community void left by declining religious participation leads people to look to the wellness industry for bothAmy says what attracts people to the modern fitness class has parallels to religious practices:“So if you look at what happens in ritual religious gatherings… You see a lot of that replicated in a lot of these boutique fitness settings. You have ritual, you have music, you have ecstatic movement, you have charismatic leaders, you have a sermon. And these sermons have increasingly moved away from talk of muffin tops and bikini bodies and losing that whatever it is, to kindness, community, thinking about your place in the world, thinking about taking the energy that you are building up in that room and spreading it forward. ”Relevant LinksBuy Amy's book “How to Be Well: Navigating Our Self-Care Epidemic, One Dubious Cure at a Time”Read this Wikipedia page on Martine Rothblatt's robot replica of her wife BinaCheck out this article on the impact of the Flexner report on US medicineRead the book “McMindfulness” Amy mentions in the episodeSign up for Lamar's SoulCycle classAbout Our GuestAmy Larocca is an award-winning American journalist. When there's an election campaign happening, how much do you care about the cost of the policies the political parties are pushing? Or, more to the point, how willing are you to trust the politicians when they say they've done the numbers, and they all stack up? My willingness to trust them is very low. Which is why I think we will be all the poorer for ACT and NZ First voting down the plan for a publicly-funded outfit that would have done the numbers and worked out the actual cost of election policies. Because until now, all we've been able to do is take the politicians on their word. And it's going to stay that way. Not that the concept of a separate costing agency is an overnight thing or a new thing. The idea has been around since 2016, when Green MP Metiria Turei first raised it. In fact, what she wanted —and what the Labour Party wanted too— was broader than what Finance Minister Nicola Willis eventually proposed to Cabinet. But which is now history thanks to the two minor coalition parties. Nicola Willis' version would have made the government of the day's financial information available to political parties when they were putting their policies together. But even that watered-down version was too much for ACT and NZ First, with David Seymour saying that it isn't warranted, because he doesn't think it would stop messy election-year debates about how party policies might be paid for. But it raises the question about election promises and whether us voters are still sucked in by the political promises on their own, or whether we are more discerning and whether we think it would be good to have more transparency. More scrutiny. I want more scrutiny. Because without it, all we have to go on is gut instinct. Or the believability of politicians. All politicians of all stripes and colours I'm talking about here – all we can do is take them on their word. Before I hold up National's tax cuts as an example of why we need a publicly-funded agency to go through political policies with a fine-tooth comb, let me remind of you of that daft idea Labour had before the last election of taking GST off fruit and vegetables. At first blush, it might have sounded like a good idea. But I wasn't sold. I don't think many of us were, because we had no idea how effective it would be. Not just from the perspective of whether it would actually make fruit and veggies more affordable, but also what it could mean for government coffers. Grant Robertson always poo-pooed the idea but then, somehow magically, came around to the idea just before the election. And there he was, telling us that he'd done the numbers and he'd realised that, actually, it would have all stacked up financially and we'd all have kiwifruit and broccoli coming out of our ears. But without the proof, it was all hot air. Same thing with National's tax cuts. We were told it was going to mean more money in our pockets, but not a lot was said about how out-of-pocket the Government might be because of it, and what that would mean down the track. And what happened? The tax cuts went ahead, and government revenue dropped. That foreign buyers tax was another one. The only expert analysis we had to rely on was what all the so-called “independent experts” roped-in by all the parties had to say about the policies they were roped-in to comment on. And all that did was create all the usual noise and confusion and we were back to voting on gut instinct because who knew what the hell to make of what was being said left, right and centre? How different things would be if all of these brilliant vote-catching ideas were put through the wringer by an independent, publicly-funded agency. How better informed we would all be. And how careful the politicians would be about selling us snakeoil policies that we only end up regretting falling for. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- On Tuesday night, far-left candidate Zohran Mamdani earned 43.5% of the Democratic primary vote, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo to win the party's New York City mayoral nomination. Incumbent NYC Mayor Eric Adams will challenge Mamdani as an Independent in November. 3:20pm- In an interview with Fox News, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called Zohran Mamdani a “snake oil salesman” with “unrealistic” policies. 3:25pm- In his Democratic Primary victory speech, Zohran Mamdani promised to use his potential mayoral powers “to reject Donald Trump's fascism” and “to stop masked ICE agents from deporting our neighbors.” 3:40pm- When asked if Mamdani's win means the Democratic Party will embrace democratic socialism moving forward, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to answer directly.
Patrick and the Home Team comment on the latest developments in the NYC mayoral race, as the largest city in the United States might soon elect its first Muslim-progressive mayor. Is Mamdani the beginning of the end? Will we see mass migration to freer states, such as Florida?

In this laugh-out-loud (and occasionally jaw-dropping) replay of Doctales with Cocktails, Drs. May and Tim dive into one of their most viral segments yet — the story of a "sexual consent expert" who claims we should ask babies before changing their diapers. From there, they spiral delightfully into topics like auto insurance covering STDs (seriously), the possibility of suing Toyota for child support, and whether giraffes really need chiropractic adjustments. This episode blends mockery with meaning, as the hosts pause to reflect on trauma, societal absurdity, and the dangers of over-intellectualizing basic parenting. It's raw, real, and ridiculous — and that's exactly how they like it.Segments include:

Christ consciousness is a growing New Age belief that presents Christ as a universal state of enlightenment rather than the incarnate Son of God. It redefines salvation as merely overcoming the illusion of separation from God, dismisses the reality of sin, and turns the crucifixion and resurrection into symbolic metaphors. This belief system offers self-realization and inner divinity, but it ultimately denies the power of the gospel and the need for a Savior. The guys point out that while it may sound spiritual and even appealing, it leads people away from the truth of scripture. They encourage believers to stay rooted in God's Word, approach conversations with grace and clarity, and remember that those drawn to these teachings are often searching for real hope—something only Jesus can provide.Send us a textThanks for listening! Talk Back to MeIs it immoral for a brand to sell a Bible? Does our answer change within the context of Gun Culture? As we witness a revival of Faith in this loosely-bordered community, we watch as the imagery, iconography, and storefronts shift from the nihilistic, to the Christian. Instead of tap-rack-bang morale patches featuring lewd imagery, we see a cross, a Bible verse, a call to conviction. But with the newfound presence of Christianity on the front page of the Gun Culture, is it wrong, or dishonoring to the Word of God for a company to sell a Cordura-wrapped Bible with their logo on it? Even if their intent is good, does this action bring money-changers into the temple?1. The Criticism being Made2. What the Criticism Should Be3. The Root of the Problem4. Ever wondered why a worthless item being sold as a miracle cure is referred to as Snake Oil? Like just about everything else in Modern America is dates back to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Clark Stanley sold snake oil to relieve aches and pains. The amazing thing is that Snake Oil really can help with these issues, unfortunately Snake Oil is something the Snake Oil salesman wasn't actually selling. His concoction was full of things like turpentine mineral oil, defrauding people and resulting in Snake Oil becoming the common term for a patent medicine con. Take a listen to his story this week and a few other choice con artists from the past who sold everything from psychic visions to the Eiffel Tower (twice).

AI agents are making big waves, but are they the future of business or just another passing trend? In this episode, Rob Collie and Justin Mannhardt explore the rise of AI agents, what they actually do, and why the excitement might be a little premature. They unpack the risks, the rewards, and how leaders can navigate the hype with a bit of caution and a lot of curiosity. Rob and Justin discuss the fine balance between automation and human oversight, tackling questions about when it's smart to embrace AI and when it might be better to pause. They also share thoughts on the current SaaS landscape, where new AI tools are popping up fast and why it pays to be thoughtful before jumping in. Ultimately, this episode is about finding clarity in a fast-moving space. It's about understanding where AI agents can add real value, where they might introduce unnecessary risk, and why critical thinking still matters. Rob and Justin reflect on the challenges of trusting AI, the dangers of locking into technology too early, and how the best decisions come from balancing curiosity with skepticism. If you're wondering how to separate the genuine innovations from the passing fads and how to be strategic about adopting AI in your business, this conversation is for you.

The breaking up of federal healthcare, and similarly related, agencies comes with a caveat: what will they be replaced with? The same question can be asked about ingredients that may soon be restricted in the United States, what are they going to be replaced with? A recent Executive Order from the White House has created the Make America Healthy Again Commission to investigate why Americans are not only so mentally and physically sick, but why we lead developed nations in these diseases, sometimes doubling the rates. Asthma is twice as common in the US than in Europe, Africa, or even Asia. Six in ten Americans have one chronic disease, while four in ten have more. While some may be genuinely classified by symptoms, others are fabricated to sell drugs, hence while ADD/ADHD has continued to explode. America spends $4.5-trillion in healthcare annually and 90% of that is on chronic conditions and mental health problems that are treatable, reversible, or preventable. But how much good can MAHA do when it is approved by a fast food president and when its leader, RFK Jr. still says McDonalds is acceptable so long as it is fried in beef tallow. Nothing is perfect, but it needs to be said that junk food prohibition will work as good as alcohol prohibition. America has a food fetish of the worst kind, an obsession with simple so-called solutions to problems they create personally, and an unhealthy reliance on men and women who work for companies that have a desire to sell you wonder cures. -FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITESTRIPE DONATIONCashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

Where is the line between fact and fiction in the capabilities of AI? Which predictions or promises about the future of AI are reasonable and which are the creations of hype for the benefit of the industry or the company making outsized claims?Arvind Narayanan is a professor of computer science at Princeton University, the director of the Center for Information Technology Policy, and an author. His latest book is AI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can't, and How to Tell the Difference.Greg and Arvind discuss the misconceptions about AI technology, emphasizing the overestimations of AI's capabilities and the importance of understanding predictive versus generative AI. Arvind also points out the ethical and practical issues of deploying AI in fields like criminal justice and HR. Arvind and Greg also explore the challenges of regulation, the historical context of technological hype, and how academia can play a role in shaping AI's future. Arvind also reflects on his previous work on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency technologies and shares insights into the complexities and future of AI and blockchain.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Show Links:Recommended Resources:Deep LearningGenerative Artificial IntelligenceAISnakeOil.com | NewsletterBitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies | Princeton/Coursera CourseGuest Profile:Faculty Profile at Princeton UniversityLinkedIn ProfileWikipedia PageHis Work:Amazon Author PageAI Snake Oil: What Artificial Intelligence Can Do, What It Can't, and How to Tell the DifferenceBitcoin and Cryptocurrency Technologies: A Comprehensive IntroductionFairness and Machine Learning: Limitations and OpportunitiesGoogle Scholar PageEpisode Quotes:What can the AI community learn from medicine about testing?28:51: Let's talk about what we can learn from medicine and what maybe we shouldn't take from them. I think that the community internalized a long time ago that the hard part of innovation is not the building, but the testing. And the AI community needs to learn that. Traditionally, in machine learning, the building was the hard part, and everybody would evaluate on the same few sets of benchmarks. And that was okay because they were mostly solving toy problems as they were building up the complexities of these technologies. Now, we're building AI systems that need to do things in the real world. And the building, especially with foundation models, you build once and apply it to a lot of different things. Right? That has gotten a lot easier—not necessarily easier in terms of technical skills, but in terms of the relative amount of investment you need to put into that, as opposed to the testing—because now you have to test foundation models in a legal setting, medical setting, [and] hundreds of other settings. So that, I think, is one big lesson.Replacing broken systems with AI can escalate the problem08:36: Just because one system is broken doesn't mean that we should replace it with another broken system instead of trying to do the hard work of thinking about how to fix the system. And fixing it with AI is not even working because, in the hiring scenario, what's happening is that candidates are now turning to AI to apply to hundreds of positions at once. And it's clearly not solving the problem; it's only escalating the arms race. And it might be true that human decision-makers are biased; they're not very accurate. But at least, when you have a human in the loop, you're forced to confront this shittiness of the situation, right? You can't put this moral distance between yourself and what's going on, and I think that's one way in which AI could make it worse because it's got this veneer of objectivity and accuracy.Foundation models lower costs and could shift AI research back to academia27:22: The rise of foundation models has meant that they've kind of now become a layer on top of which you can build other things, and that is much, much less expensive. Then, building foundation models themselves—especially if it's going to be the case that scaling is going to run out—we don't need to look for AI advances by building 1 billion models and 10 billion models; we can take the existing foundation models for granted and build on top of them. Then, I would expect that a lot of research might move back to academia. Especially the kind of research that might involve offbeat ideas.

New ‘Sode. Alas, as I sit polishing my ninja green Birkin bag buckle, alone after being dumped by a ParaFI partner, I ponder what went wrong in 2024 in Glitter and Crypto. There was the horrifying misunderstanding at Neiman Marcus ETH Denver that resulted in my shoplifting misdemeanor, the disappointing lack of staking in the ETH ETF that left most of my circle lightly slitting their wrists to the soundtrack of Usher Let it Burn, NFTs left completely out of the ERA's tour, Caroline Ellison's refusal to wear anything cute at her trial, . I am high on AI generated meth with excitement for the 2025 Chinese New Year of the Snake, which can only bring good fortune. I have so many hopes and dreams for 2025 that I hope my AI avatar bot can pin to my vision board in time for the year new me new meme coin. I digress. My guest is the fabulous Susan Oh. AI Afficiando who was recently beat up in a hotel room by her co-founder (and is OK) and was able to stop at Glitter Ledger Headquarters on her way to press charges before heading back to Bali. Susan has the IQ of Marilyn Monroe. Her story upbringing is fascinating. She and her family fled South Korea's military dictatorship and then left Iran before the Ayatollah took over; and she family assumed refugee status for 8= months in the UK, before they were sponsored in Canada, where she grew up. She then became a teenage chain smoking punk rocker out at gay discos. Susan then had a career in journalism, media, AI and crypto all mixed together in a big clay pot thrown into a Kiln of glitter and madness before developing her baby Muckr AI, a company that uses AI to flag disinformation. Unfortunately, the funding has had some interesting bumps. Listen on. Happy New Year. #GlitterLedger.

“If I could just figure out the right way to market.” I hear this all the time from my clients, and maybe you've thought it yourself. Because I get it. There are so many marketers out there who are promising you that they have the proven formula or that there is some secret to success in marketing that only they have. And if you pay them, they will tell you all the secrets, and you'll never have to stress about marketing again. But what happens? You buy the course or the program. Do the work Then those results never quite materialize as they promised. And not only that, what they are teaching is making marketing suck more, not less.So let's deconstruct why there's no one right way to market and how letting go of that idea is going to help your business. And fair warning, I'm gonna get a little ranty on this episode.Want to hear more about The Expert Up Club? Book Your Private Tour HereFull show notes and transcript are here.
