Last we left off, the Tempests had gone back down into the deep dark down deep down to try their hand at a little exterminatus. Having rescued some villagers who'd fallen into a massive sink hole, they learned that some bad shit was going down beneath the surface of Takatari. A large 'something' was moving around, leaving death and decay in its wake as it bored out massive tunnels of rock. This thing had supposedly laid waste to an entire underground city of Duergar and had established two separate nests where its foul spawn were being cooked. The Tempests thought that that just wouldn't do and bravely strode into the humid, flesh covered nest to start popping cocoons and killing bebes. It was a hard fought battle, but eventually the nest was cleared and the Tempests returned to the nearby ruins of an outpost to rest for the evening and decide what to do about the second nest when clearer minds and healthier bodies were able to formulate a plan. We rejoin them now as Kasumi finishes helping Lakin reattach his hand and the first watch of the night is taken. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Last time of the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests had delved deep underground to rescue some locals who had fallen into a sinkhole at the harbor's edge. Speaking with the survivors, they learned that something massive was moving through the underground and was likely the cause of the blight afflicting the surface. They also learned of a pair of nests nearby that they had barricaded to keep themselves safe. Resolving to rescue the people first and then return to handle the nests, Moriko turned into a giant spider taxi and got everyone to safety. Kasumi then stubbornly insisted on tracking down Tanaka and informing their Parole Officer of their whereabouts, much to the irritation of Lakin who deemed it more prudent to handle the threat sooner rather than later. Reaching an impasse, the party split when tempers rose: Lakin and Zaan heading for the sinkhole back below, and Kasumi searching for Tanaka with Pez and Moriko. The Tempests eventually got back together and delved back underground to take care of the nests. We rejoin them now as they creep further into the humid, musty nest, and blasted open a large pustule that deposited a creature of some kind. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Last we left off, the Tempests had delved deep into the ground beneath the Kudong Harbor in Takatari in search of lost locals who had been consumed by a massive sink hole. One of these missing locals is Haru, the older brother of Tamami, a young elven girl they befriended. Through completely submerged tunnels, winding pathways, and large insectoid creatures that lurk in the dark, the Tempests searched for more survivors but have found only death so far. The party got a little turned around trying to navigate the twisting tunnels and ended up where they began. Kasumi started leaving marks to keep them from doubling back on themselves again and soon, they discovered a pathway laid with cobble stones.. Something clearly made by intelligent hands... After coming across what appeared to be a mushroom farm, the party decided to take a short rest to recoup and treat their wounds. Lakin took the opportunity to explore a bit further and came across an outpost of some kind.. The faintest flickering light can be seen on the other side of the small tower. Last time we spoke about the invasion of Iwo Jima. In March 1945, as the Pacific War raged, the US Marines began and invasion of Iwo Jima while Allied forces advanced across the Philippines. The Japanese formed the 32nd Army to defend the island, but faced shortages of supplies and equipment. They mobilized Okinawan civilians for support and constructed extensive fortifications. The Americans launched Operation Iceberg, neutralizing enemy air facilities in the Ryukyus, Kyushu, and Formosa. Task Force 58 and other air forces struck Japanese targets, while Spruance's 5th Fleet prepared to land Buckner's 10th Army. Initial landings occurred in the Kerama Islands, followed by the main assault on April 1 on Okinawa's Hagushi beaches. Despite heavy bombardment, Japanese defenses remained concealed. The Americans encountered minimal resistance initially, but the stage was set for a bloody and brutal battle. As we last left off, Admirals Turner and Spruance successfully landed over 60,000 troops from General Buckner's 10th Army on the Hagushi beaches of Okinawa with minimal resistance. In response, General Ushijima's main forces remained inactive in their underground positions in the south, having effectively endured the continuous naval and air assaults from the enemy. However, under pressure from higher authorities in Tokyo and Formosa, the 32nd Army began to develop plans for a general counteroffensive aimed at the Yontan and Kadena airfields, utilizing nighttime infiltration and close combat tactics. The primary response, however, was expected to come from the air. As part of Operation Ten-Go, all Army and Navy air forces stationed in the Home Islands were to focus their efforts in the East China Sea to execute a series of coordinated mass air strikes against enemy transport and carrier task forces, collectively referred to as the Kikisui attacks. Japan's wartime terminology exploited the distinctively poetic and euphemistic nature of the Japanese language. The informal term kamikaze actually means “divine wind.” Specifically, kamikaze refers to the typhoons that miraculously wrecked Kublai Khan's Mongol–Koryo invasion fleets in 1274. Like “blitzkrieg”, the unofficial term “kamikaze” was mostly used by Allied journalists. The IJN and IJA officially called suicide attack units tokubetsu kogekitai, meaning “special attack unit.” This was usually shortened to tokkutai, with tokko both noun and adjective meaning “special” i.e. suicide. Kikisui was the codename for the ten mass kamikaze attacks off Okinawa against the Allied fleet. Kikisui means “floating chrysanthemum,” which was the war emblem of legendary 14th-century samurai Masashige Kusinoke, a national exemplar of sacrificial devotion to the Emperor. Ten-Go had been initiated on March 26, following the initial landings on the Kerama Islands; however, by the time of the invasion, Admiral Toyoda's disorganized Combined Fleet was unable to carry out any large-scale kamikaze attacks, as it was still consolidating approximately 3,000 aircraft in Kyushu. Additionally, encouraged by Emperor Hirohito, Toyoda momentarily sanctioned a dramatic, one-way suicide mission involving the superbattleship Yamato and Rear-Admiral Komura Keizo's 2nd Destroyer Squadron, aimed at destroying Spruance's invasion fleet. This surface attack mission, codenamed Ten-Ichi-Go and led by Vice-Admiral Ito Seiichi of the 2nd Fleet, vaguely suggested that if Yamato reached Okinawa, she would ground herself as an artillery platform while her crew disembarked as naval infantry. Nonetheless, the chances of success for this mission were slim; it was primarily intended for the Imperial Japanese Navy to maintain its honor. On April 2, while General Watson's 2nd Marine Division conducted another demonstration off the southeast beaches, American forces prepared to advance eastward. In the south, benefiting from ideal weather and minimal resistance, the 17th Regiment secured the highlands overlooking Nakagusuku Bay and extended its patrols to the bay's shoreline. The 32nd Regiment eliminated a strongpoint south of Koza using tanks and then aligned with the 17th. The 381st Regiment advanced through Shimabuku but faced enemy resistance in and around Momobaru. Meanwhile, the 383rd Regiment captured a hill just south of Momobaru after a fierce battle and also took a ridge northeast of Futema with support from airstrikes, artillery, and tanks. In the north, however, General Geiger's Marines faced challenging terrain and supply issues. The 1st Battalion, 29th Marines moved north to secure the unoccupied Zampa Misaki area, where Turner later established a radar station. The 22nd Marines advanced quickly eastward throughout the day against light opposition, successfully securing the Nagahama beaches alongside the 6th Reconnaissance Company. On the other hand, the 4th Marines met with steadily mounting resistance. At 1100 a platoon of 3/4, entering the mouth of a steep ravine was met by a sharp fusillade of small-arms fire, which revealed a series of mutually supporting caves on both sides of the draw. In the fire fight that ensued, 12 wounded men were isolated and not recovered for four hours. "Every means of painlessly destroying the strongpoint was unsuccessfully tried and it was finally taken by a typical 'Banzai' charge, with one platoon entering the mouth of the draw and one platoon coming down one side of the two noses that formed the pocket." The 1st Marine Division continued its advance with little resistance to the Ishimmi-Kutoku line, also extending southward to Chatan, while the 1st Marines moved past the 5th Marines toward Chibana. With approximately 6,000 yards separating General Del Valle's main frontline units from the 7th Division, General Arnold decided to send Colonel Roy Greene's 184th Regiment to fill this significant gap. At sea, Admiral Mitscher's Task Force 58 launched a strike against Amami Oshima, sinking three vessels and damaging two others, while also witnessing four warships collide and sustain damage. In retaliation, Admiral Ugaki's Kyushu aircraft force conducted sporadic kamikaze attacks, resulting in damage to five transports. The next day, General Hodge's 24th Corps shifted its focus southward. The 17th Regiment secured the rear areas and captured Awase, while the 32nd Regiment advanced approximately 5,000 yards along Nakagusuku Bay to occupy Kuba and establish its lines in front of Hill 165. The 381st Regiment took control of Kishaba and Atanniya but failed in its assaults on Hill 165 and Unjo. Meanwhile, the 383rd Regiment swiftly occupied Isa, Chiyunna, and the Futema high ground. Looking north, Del Valle dispatched the 1st Reconnaissance Company to scout the area along the corps boundary, sweep the Katchin Peninsula, and patrol back up the east coast to the village of Hizaonna. This maneuver enabled the 1st Marines to advance quickly in formation and reach the sea wall overlooking the northern end of Nakagusuku Bay by nightfall. Concurrently, the 5th Marines moved forward and successfully occupied Agina and Tengan; the 7th Marines gained around 2,700 yards of enemy territory and ultimately reached Hizaonna, although Company K became lost and was ambushed. The 4th Marines navigated the challenging terrain and light enemy resistance to secure the significant hill mass behind Yontan airfield, located 3,000 yards short of the east coast. The 22nd Marines advanced and successfully captured Nakadomari, along with a position 400 yards south of that line. Meanwhile, the 6th Reconnaissance Company, supported by armored units, crossed the Ishikawa Isthmus to the village of Ishikawa, where they faced mortar fire. At sea, Mitscher's aircraft carriers targeted Okinawa, sinking two vessels and damaging two others. In response, Ugaki was finally able to launch a preliminary mass Ten-Go air attack, with 119 aircraft causing damage to the escort carrier Wake Island, the destroyers Bennett, Prichett, and Foreman, the minesweeper Hambelton, and two landing craft. Due to significant advancements, Geiger successfully deployed Colonel Victor Bleasdale's 29th Marines to take control of the Yontan airfield and other rear areas. To the south, Del Valle's units moved toward the eastern shore of Okinawa, with the 1st Marines occupying the Katchin Peninsula without facing any resistance, while the 5th and 7th Marine Regiments secured the coastline in their designated zones. Further south, after splitting the island in two, Hodge began advancing toward Naha, targeting the hill mass stretching from Urasoe-Mura to Hill 178 and Ouki. In response, General Bradley positioned Colonel Macey Dill's 382nd Regiment in front of Nodake, while the 184th Regiment moved through the 381st in the Attaniya-Unjo area. For the initial push toward the Uchitomari-Tsuwa line, the 383rd Regiment advanced quickly from Isa to Mashiki, where they were ultimately halted by heavy fire from the south. The 382nd advanced over two miles south from Nodake along the eastern boundary of the division, while Arnold's forward units lagged about two miles behind due to moderate resistance at a high, wooded ridge parallel to the coastline just west of Kuba. Meanwhile, at sea, Ugaki launched only sporadic kamikaze attacks, which resulted in damage to the destroyer Wilson near the Kerama Islands. Additionally, two American vessels collided while Task Force 58 targeted Okinawa, and later that night, a suicide boat attacked and sank an LCI gunboat. In the Attaniya-Unjo area, the 383rd Regiment made a swift advance from Isa to Mashiki as part of the initial push towards the Uchitomari-Tsuwa line. However, the following day marked the onset of fierce resistance on Okinawa, with the 383rd Regiment struggling to make headway against the formidable Japanese defenses on Cactus Ridge. Meanwhile, the 382nd Regiment continued its advance southward against a series of fortified positions, achieving gains of approximately 400 yards to the east and 900 yards to the west. The 184th Regiment moved through Arakachi but was halted by intense and precise fire from a rocky outcrop located about 1,000 yards southwest. The 32nd Regiment finally managed to capture Castle Hill before pushing more than two miles along the coast to a point east of Ukuma. To the north, while the 1st Marine Division shifted to a primarily defensive posture, the 6th Marine Division conducted active reconnaissance toward the Motobu Peninsula, advancing the front to the Atsutabaru-Chima line. Additionally, a patrol from the 1st Marines on the Katchin Peninsula crossed the reef to seize Yabuchi Island swiftly. At sea, there were no kamikaze attacks that day as Ugaki and Toyoda prepared to launch the main phase of Operation Ten-Go, although an Okinawa shore battery managed to hit the battleship Nevada. Unbeknownst to the Japanese, American intelligence had successfully intercepted Combined Fleet codes, allowing them to anticipate the details of the surface Ten-Ichi-Go attack. Consequently, Spruance's warships were prepared for the imminent departure of Ito's “Surface Special Attack Force,” which was executed a few hours later. Additionally, Ushijima was instructed to initiate a strong counterattack the following day to coincide with Ten-Ichi-Go and the first Kikisui attack, but he firmly rejected this order and called for the cancellation of the unnecessarily suicidal surface attack. During the night, as Admiral Blandy's minesweepers completed the perilous task of clearing the vast areas of Chimu and Nakagusuku Bays, the Fleet Marine Force Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion landed on the northern coast of Tsugen Island to gather intelligence on enemy positions. Upon their arrival in the early hours of April 6, they encountered machine-gun and mortar fire, which ultimately compelled the battalion to retreat to the beach and reembark. Simultaneously, the 4th and 29th Marine Regiments advanced through the 22nd Marine Regiment, with the 29th Marines moving up the west coast in formation and reaching Chuda by noon, while the 4th Marines progressed along the eastern coastal road, successfully advancing seven miles toward Madaira. Further south, the 383rd Regiment continued its assault on the fortified enemy positions at Cactus Ridge, pushing forward relentlessly until they secured the western half by nightfall. The 2d Battalion, 383d Infantry, made frontal assaults through intense mortar fire to gain the ridge. "We figured," S/Sgt. Francis M. Rall later wrote, "that the way to get out of that knee mortar fire was to get to where it was coming from. So we stood up in waves, firing everything we had and throwing hand grenades by the dozen, and charged the Jap position." By such tactics the 2d Battalion gained the western half of Cactus. Over the next two days, the 382nd Regiment advanced slowly east of the Ginowan road, facing fierce resistance from the Tombstone and Nishibaru Ridges. After a 10-minute artillery bombardment, two companies of the 1st Battalion, 184th Regiment climbed nearly to the summit of the Pinnacle but were ultimately pushed back by strong resistance from caves and underground strongholds. Undeterred, Company B continued frontal assaults while Company C maneuvered up the western approaches to surprise the determined defenders. This strategy proved effective, with Company C reaching the top without sustaining any casualties and then methodically eliminating the remaining Japanese troops using white phosphorus grenades and flamethrowers. As the Pinnacle was being captured, the 32nd Regiment advanced across the coastal flatlands with minimal resistance to maintain contact with the 184th Regiment. On this day, Task Force 58 returned to sea, launching strikes on Okinawa and the Daito Islands, while Admiral Rawlings' Task Force 57 targeted the Ishigaki and Miyako Islands. Meanwhile, Japanese aerial reconnaissance identified two American carrier groups near Okinawa, prompting Ugaki to initiate his first mass Kikisui attack, sending hundreds of Japanese aircraft to assault Mitscher's carriers. US carriers unleashed a combined 19 USN and four USMC squadrons to blunt the onslaught. Swirling, running dogfights developed around noon and lasted through sunset. April 6 may have started slow, but by evening it had developed into one of the greatest aerial confrontations of all time. American CAPs overwhelmingly massacred the poorly trained Japanese attackers; Mitscher's Task Force 58 fighters claimed 249 Japanese planes for just two lost—a staggering 125-to-1 kill ratio. Yet the kamikaze pilots' grim determination was chillingly apparent. According to VF-82's action report: “Of all the enemy planes encountered, not one returned fire, all remained on course, boring in toward the surface vessels. The only evasive action offered was jinking, and the majority of the aircraft were obsolete models as can be seen by the list [of] destroyed. Primary danger to our pilots was collision or getting in the path of a friendly plane's fire.” Essex's VF-83 (36 Hellcats) and VBF-83 (36 Corsairs) combined for 69 kills, while Belleau Wood's 24 VF-30 Hellcats shot down 47. Belleau Wood's skipper, Captain Red Tomlinson, duly signaled Task Group 58.1's Rear Admiral Joseph J. Jocko Clark: “Does this exceed the bag limit?” Clark responded, “Negative. There is no limit. This is open season. Well done.” The US carrier fighters' 275 kills was thus the war's 4th-highest 1-day total. 13 US pilots achieved ace status (scored their 5th kill) on April 6, with 4 becoming “ace-in-a-day.” 10 pilots claimed 4 kills, while another 17 shot down 3 each. Combined with anti-aircraft fire, the Americans destroyed 355 Japanese planes. However, even significant aerial victories could not prevent the devastating kamikaze assaults, with approximately 182 Japanese aircraft in 22 groups attacking Spruance's 5th Fleet that afternoon. This led to 24 kamikaze planes sinking the destroyers Bush and Colhoun, as well as three transport ships, and inflicting further damage on the light carrier San Jacinto, 12 destroyers, three destroyer minesweepers, and one minesweeper. Friendly anti-aircraft fire also caused damage to battleship North Carolina, light cruiser Pasadena, and destroyer Hutchins. Despite the extensive damage, four new escort carriers arrived off Okinawa that day, bringing the first 222 fighters of Major-General Francis Mulcahy's Tactical Air Force, stationed at Yontan airfield. Meanwhile, the Yamato force set sail at 15:24 towards Okinawa, but within 45 minutes, a B-29 spotted them in transit. Submarine Threadfin then detected Ito's strike force moving through the Bungo Strait at 17:45. As Ito's force rounded Kyushu to the southwest, it was monitored overnight by submarine Hackleback, which sent four additional contact reports and was pursued three times briefly by one of Yamato's escorting destroyers. Concerned about a potential mass Kikisui attack on April 7, Spruance ordered Mitscher's carriers to concentrate on thwarting Japanese air assaults while tasking Admiral Deyo's Task Force 54 with intercepting Ito's strike force. At 06:20, April 7, six Zeros of the 203rd Kokutai arrived over Yamato as CAP. 14 total Zeros would relay in small groups over the Yamato task force, but all would depart as scheduled by 10:00. The Americans already knew the exact CAP schedule of Yamato's fighters, a later US intelligence memo dryly observing, “They left too soon.” At 08:32, an Essex Hellcat reported the Yamato task force southwest of Koshiki Retto at a heading of 300 degrees. The Yamato group was doing 22kts and deployed in a diamond formation, with Yamato in the center and Yahagi astern. Yamato simultaneously reported that she had been sighted. Visibility was highly variable, with patchy overcast. Within minutes, two VPB-21 PBM-3 Mariner flying boats (based at Kerama Retto with seaplane tender Chandeleur) arrived and began shadowing Yamato and radioing situation reports. Meanwhile, Mitscher duly reported the Yamato sighting to Spruance, before dispatching 16 additional fighters at 09:15 to track Yamato. Shortly after Yamato's CAP had departed, at 10:14, the Japanese discovered the two shadowing PBM-3 Mariners, and simultaneously reported a US submarine stalking the task force—this was Hackleback, which had managed to catch back up with the zig-zagging Japanese. Three minutes later, at 10:17, Yamato turned towards the Mariners and opened fire with her awesome 18.1in. Sanshikidan anti-aircraft shells. Yahagi also opened fire, and additionally began jamming the Mariners' transmissions. The Mariners retreated into the clouds unharmed at 10:18, and Yamato and Yahagi ceased fire. To his chief-of-staff, Commodore Arleigh Burke, Mitscher announced: “Inform Admiral Spruance that I propose to strike the Yamato sortie group at 1200hrs unless otherwise directed.” The grizzled aviator desperately wished to sink Yamato, but he likely suspected that Spruance, riding New Mexico, intended his beloved dreadnoughts claim one last moment of glory. “Will you take them or shall I?” Mitscher pressed. Spruance's response: “You take them.” At 10:00, the carriers of Task Groups 58.1 and 58.3 launched the first wave of 282 aircraft, although only 227 managed to locate Ito's strike force as they navigated through challenging, overcast weather. At 11:07, Yamato's radars detected the large formation approaching from 63 nautical miles away, prompting Ito to increase speed to 25 knots. Within eight minutes, the formation closed to 44 nautical miles, leading the Japanese to initiate sharp evasive maneuvers. Bennington's Lieutenant-Commander Hugh Woods' airborne radar detected the Yamato task force some 25nm away from its predicted location, and the US strike altered course. Five minutes later, the Americans made visual contact through a hole in the patchy 3,000ft overcast, a Hornet pilot recalling, “Yamato looked like the Empire State Building plowing through the water.” Yamato cruised in the center, flanked by destroyers Kasumi, Suzutsuki, Hamakaze, and Yukikaze. Light cruiser Yahagi was in the van, followed by destroyers Hatsushimo, Isokaze, and Fuyutsuki. The first American aviators encountered the destroyer Asashimo, which had been experiencing machinery issues for five hours and had fallen 12 nautical miles behind the main task force to the north. San Jacinto's seven Hellcats dove against Asashimo, but the crippled destroyer threw up notably heavy flak. The Hellcats' 1,000lb bombs closely straddled Asashimo, buckling the destroyer's hull plating. The Hellcats then repeatedly strafed the destroyer, causing large fires that quickly silenced Asashimo's guns. San Jacinto's eight Avengers then made a textbook attack run at 300ft, dropping torpedoes from 1,200 to 1,600yds range. Trailing a wide oil slick, the crippled Asashimo attempted to comb the torpedoes, but one struck beneath her bridge and a second hit near her engine room. Successive explosions blew Asashimo partly out of the water and broke her in half. Asashimo sank at 1213hrs, going down with all 330 men. She had lasted three minutes against San Jacinto's attack. Twelve miles ahead, Yamato lookouts spotted the incoming aircraft at 12:32, which then spent the next five minutes circling just outside the range of Japanese anti-aircraft fire to coordinate their strike plan. Around this time, Yamato also raised Togo's iconic Tsushima flag signal: “On this one battle rests the fate of our nation. Let every man do his utmost.”At 12:37, the circling planes launched their coordinated assault on Yamato and her escorts, focusing on the superbattleship's port side in an attempt to capsize her. US fighters repeatedly strafed Yamato with their 5in. rockets and 0.50cal. machine guns, decimating Japanese antiaircraft batteries and slaughtering exposed antiaircraft crews. The intense carnage and chaos that followed suppressed careful targeting and further ravaged Japanese gunners' morale. Yamato was maneuvering hard at her flank speed of 27kts, when at 1240hrs four Bennington Helldivers from VB-82 delivered two 1,000lb bombs near Yamato's mainmast. The first bomb exploded in Yamato's crew quarters. The second detonated near Yamato's aft command station and caused serious damage, destroying one of Yamato's two air search radars, her after secondary gun director, and several 25mm antiaircraft guns. The subsequent fires shortly reached the powder handling area beneath Yamato's after 6.1in. turret and detonated the readyuse propellant. The resulting conflagration virtually exterminated the 6.1in. turret crew, but flash doors prevented the explosion from reaching the rest of the magazine. Nevertheless, the explosion killed the area's entire damage control party, meaning the resulting fire would rage uncontrolled for the rest of the battle. The Americans lost one Helldiver. At 1243hrs, eight Hornet Avengers launched torpedo attacks against Yamato's port side, covered by 14 Bunker Hill Corsairs strafing Yamato with rockets. Antiaircraft fire hit six Avengers, destroying one, but at least three torpedoes hit the water. The first two torpedoes missed, but at 1245hrs the third torpedo slammed into Yamato's port side, opening her hull to 2,235 tons of seawater. Japanese damage control counterflooded with 604 tons of water to correct the list. Attempting to draw US attackers from Yamato, Hara's light cruiser Yahagi had maneuvered away from the Japanese battleship, steaming hard at 35kts. US strafing had already ricocheted machine gun bullets around Yahagi's bridge, killing a lookout. Watching the attack unfold, Hara admitted, “The spectacle was at once thrilling and terrifying.” Meanwhile, Bennington's Lieutenant-Commander Ed De Garmo led three Avengers against Yahagi. At 1246hrs, De Garmo's Avengers delivered Yahagi her first hit and it was a devastating one. A single torpedo struck Yahagi in the engine room, killing the entire engineering crew. Yahagi was left dead in the water nine minutes into the battle. Destroyer Isokaze subsequently sped towards Yahagi to take off Rear Admiral Komura. Meanwhile, around 56 aircraft targeted Yamato's escorting destroyers, leading to multiple torpedo hits that split Hamakaze in two; Isokaze was bombarded with bombs; Fuyutsuki suffered minor damage from two dud rockets; and Suzutsuki was struck by a bomb that severed her bow. The first wave of attacks concluded at 12:50, as Ito sought to reorganize his forces and evaluate Yahagi's status. Shortly after 13:00, a second wave of 50 aircraft appeared, managing to hit Yamato's port bow with a bomb at 13:23 and inflicting several bomb hits near the battleship's bridge. Additionally, two bomb hits and several near misses critically damaged the destroyer Kasumi, leaving her dead in the water and ablaze. At 1333 the third wave of US attackers arrived, comprising 110 new Yorktown, Intrepid, and Langley aircraft from the delayed TG-58.4 strike. The Americans now overwhelmingly focused on the reeling Yamato. Twenty Avengers attacked Yamato's portside. Around 1337, the third wave saw three confirmed torpedo hits on Yamato's portside, plus a fourth probable hit, increasing her portside list to 15–16 degrees. Stationed on Yamato's bridge, Ensign Mitsuru Yoshida recalled, “I could hear the Captain vainly shouting, ‘Hold on men! Hold on men!'”. Aruga had no option but to flood Yamato's starboard machinery spaces, where hundreds of engineers toiled to keep Yamato underway. Water, both from torpedo hits and the flood valves rushed into these compartments and snuffed out the lives of the men at their posts, several hundred in all. Caught between cold sea water and steam and boiling water from the damaged boilers, they simply melted away.” Aruga's drastic measure reduced Yamato's portside list back to five degrees, but exhausted her last starboard counterflooding capacity. Having lost one shaft and gained 3,000 tons more water, Yamato's speed fell to 12kts. At 1342hrs, TG-58.4 Avengers dropped another four torpedoes. Yoshida marveled, “That these pilots repeated their attacks with such accuracy and coolness, was a sheer display of the unfathomable, undreamed-of strength of our foes!” Yamato shot down one Avenger, but two torpedoes plowed into Yamato's portside, making five torpedo hits in five minutes. The Americans had intentionally targeted Yamato's stern to wreck her steering, and the gamble paid off. Yamato's rudders were now disabled, jamming her in a permanent starboard turn. Any chance of reaching Okinawa was gone. Reduced to a speed of 8 knots and unable to maneuver, the stricken Yamato became an easy target. Around 14:02, Mitscher's relentless carrier planes inflicted at least four more bomb hits, disabling most of Yamato's remaining operational anti-aircraft guns as the battleship helplessly circled. As a result, Ito canceled the Ten-Ichi-Go attack and promptly ordered all his warships to rescue survivors and attempt to retreat to Japan. The sinking battleship was then deserted, except for Ito and Captain Aruga Kosaku, who chose to go down with their ship. Throughout the battle, a stoic Ito had sat silently with arms crossed on Yamato's bridge, unflinching as bullets ricocheted around him, slaughtering his staff. Ensing Yoshida Mitsuru now observed that Ito “struggled to his feet. His chief of staff then arose and saluted. A prolonged silence followed during which they regarded each other solemnly.” Ito then told his staff, “Save yourselves. I shall stay with the ship.” Ito then shook hands deliberately with his officers, retired to his sea cabin one deck below, and locked it behind him. Meanwhile, with Yamato's pumps no longer functioning, alarms began to blare: temperatures in the 18.1-inch magazines were approaching dangerous levels. By 14:20, the capsizing Yamato's main deck was vertical to the ocean. Captain Aruga, eating a biscuit given to him by a rating, tied himself to a binnacle on Yamato's bridge. As Yamato capsized, surviving men clambered across her keel, a crazed, half-naked officer screaming and brandishing his samurai sword at the Americans. Meanwhile, the Americans continued pummeling the helpless Yahagi, which “quivered and rocked as if made of paper,” recalled Captain Hara. The stricken Yahagi suffered repeated hits. “My proud cruiser,” Hara brooded, “was but a mass of junk, barely afloat.” Around 1400hrs Yahagi took the decisive torpedo hit, triggering a clearly fatal starboard roll. Hara finally ordered, “Abandon ship.” At 1405hrs, one minute after receiving her last bomb, Yahagi capsized and sank, having somehow absorbed at least 12 bombs and seven torpedoes. Captain Hara and Rear Admiral Komura calmly stepped into the water as Yahagi sank from beneath them, only barely surviving the sinking Yahagi's undertow. Now clinging to floating wreckage, the exhausted Hara observed “scores of planes swarming about [Yamato] like gnats.” By 14:20, the capsizing Yamato's main deck was vertical to the ocean, and three minutes later, the sinking dreadnought exploded catastrophically before finally disappearing beneath the East China Sea. Yamato's capsizing motion had likely forced open her 18.1in. powder room doors, allowing fires into the battleship's magazines. An American gunner described the explosion as “the prettiest sight I've ever seen … A red column of fire shot up through the clouds and when it faded Yamato was gone.” The detonation killed most Yamato survivors still struggling in the water and may have destroyed several US aircraft. The Americans' exact score will never be known, but Yamato had certainly absorbed seven bombs and nine to twelve torpedoes out of 150 torpedoes dropped. The US planes departed at 1443, but not before issuing “a few farewell strafing runs across the Yamato survivors.” Destroyers Suzutsuki, Fuyuzuki, Yukikaze, and Hatsushimo rescued 1,620 men, including Hara and Komura, before successfully returning to Japan. Additionally, the disabled destroyers Isokaze and Kasumi were scuttled by Yukikaze and Fuyuzuki, respectively. By the end of the action, the combined losses for Ten-Ichi-Go totaled 4,242 Japanese lives. Meanwhile, Ugaki had launched a second mass kamikaze attack around noon, sending 132 aircraft towards Task Force 58. Although Mitscher's fighters shot down 54 attackers, the kamikazes managed to damage the fast carrier Hancock, the battleship Maryland, the destroyers Bennett and Wesson, and a motor minesweeper. The initial Kikisui operation resulted in the deaths of 485 Americans and left 582 wounded. The significant losses over the two days hindered Ugaki from launching another large-scale Kikisui attack for five days. Meanwhile, back in Okinawa on April 7 and 8, Hodge continued his offensive in the south. In Bradley's sector, the 383rd Regiment persistently executed banzai charges against the remaining enemy strongholds on Cactus Ridge until the entire area was secured by American forces. They then advanced toward Kakazu Ridge, where they faced even stronger resistance. The 382nd Regiment made a slow but steady push forward, ultimately being halted by intense fire across a broad front just north of Kaniku and Tombstone Ridge. The fighting in the 7th Division's sector on April 7 centered on a low, bare hill 1000 yards west of the town of Minami-Uebaru, called Red Hill because of its color. The enemy had made a fortress of the hill by constructing his usual system of caves and connecting trenches. A frontal assault on Red Hill by troops of the 3rd Battalion failed in the face of machine-gun and mortar fire. In a 2nd attempt, 3 platoons of tanks supported the attack. 10 medium and 5 light tanks advanced through a cut toward Red Hill; 2 tanks were blown up by mines and 1 was satchel-charged as the column moved toward the hill and up the sides. Intense enemy artillery and machine-gun fire drove the infantry back and disabled more tanks. Japanese swarmed in among the armor and tried to destroy the tanks with satchel charges and flaming rags. 2 medium tanks held off the attackers, the defending crews resorting to hand grenades, while the rest of the operative tanks withdrew. The 14th Independent Battalion headquarters proudly described this action as a perfect example of how to separate troops from tanks and thus break up the American infantry-tank team. The enemy dispatch stated: "The above method of isolating the troops from the tanks with surprise fire followed by close combat tactics is an example in the complete destruction of enemy tanks and will be a great factor in deciding the victories of tank warfare." After these 2 reversals the 3rd Battalion made a wide enveloping maneuver to the right. Behind fire from artillery and supporting weapons, the troops drove toward Red Hill from the west and occupied it, suffering only 2 casualties in the move. Once more a Japanese outpost had shown its strength against a frontal attack and its vulnerability to a flanking maneuver. The capture of Red Hill left another sector of enemy territory open for the taking. The troops advanced 100 yards south before digging in. A platoon of tanks conducted a remarkable 4000-yard foray almost to Hill 178 and withdrew safely, despite a bombing attack by two single-engined Japanese planes. The following day, the 184th continued its advance southward under heavy fire, managing to take Triangulation Hill after two fierce assaults. Simultaneously, the 32nd Regiment captured Tsuwa as it extended the front along the coastline. By the night of April 8, the 24th Corps had sustained 1,510 battle casualties while inflicting 4,489 Japanese fatalities and capturing 13; they had finally reached the formidable perimeter of the Shuri fortified zone. Looking north, on April 7, the Fleet Marine Force Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion landed on Ike Island, encountering no opposition. Subsequently, Company B was dispatched to secure Takabanare Island, while Company A took control of Heanza and Hamahika Islands. During the night, Company B reembarked, maneuvered around Tsugen Island, and landed on Kutaka Island, where they also found no enemy presence. Simultaneously, the 32nd Regiment captured Tsuwa as it expanded the front along the coastline. By the evening of April 8, the 24th Corps had incurred 1,510 battle casualties. On the same day, Shepherd advanced north with minimal resistance, as the 29th Marines successfully reached Nago while the 4th Marines moved through Henoko. Ahead of the division, the 6th Reconnaissance Company traveled up the west coast road to the village of Awa and then crossed the base of the Motobu Peninsula to Nakaoshi, encountering and either destroying or scattering several enemy groups along the way. As the reconnaissance zone was extended westward on April 8, clear signs, confirmed by aerial observations and photographs, indicated that the enemy had chosen the rugged mountains of Motobu as their defensive position. As a result, the 22nd Marines were deployed across the island from Nakaoshi to Ora to protect the right flank and rear of the 29th Marines attacking westward, while the 4th Marines assembled near Ora to support either the 29th on Motobu or the 22nd in the north. The 2nd Battalion, 29th Marines probed westward, moving across the base of Motobu and occupying the village of Gagusuku. Additionally, the reserve 1st Battalion at Yofuke successfully secured Yamadadobaru and Narashido, facing heavy enemy machine-gun and rifle fire at the latter location. The following day, the 29th Marines advanced in three columns to locate the enemy's main force at Motobu; all columns encountered resistance, revealing that a significant enemy force confronted the division in the area stretching from Itomi to Toguchi. On April 10, the 2nd Battalion, 29th Marines captured Unten Ko, where the Japanese had established a submarine and torpedo boat base; the 3rd Battalion took Toguchi and sent patrols into the interior, while the 1st Battalion advanced through Itomi and uncovered well-fortified positions on the high ground north of the village. On April 9, the 184th Regiment successfully captured Tomb Hill in the south following an artillery and air bombardment, while the 32nd Regiment took control of several finger ridges to the east that oversaw the approaches to Ouki. The Japanese-held area in front of the 383rd Regiment offered the enemy an ideal combination of defensive features. A deep moat, a hill studded with natural and man-made positions, a cluster of thick-walled buildings behind the hill; these were the basic elements of Kakazu stronghold. The enemy had exploited each one of them. Moreover, Kakazu, unlike such outposts as the Pinnacle, was an integral element of the Shuri fortified zone and a vital rampart that could expect reinforcements and heavy fire support from within the ring of positions that surrounded the 32nd Army headquarters, only 4000 yards to the south. Between the Americans and Kakazu lay a deep gorge, half hidden by trees and brush, which could be crossed only with difficulty. The Kakazu hill mass itself, which was made up of two hills connected by a saddle, stretched northwest-southeast for 2000 yards, sloping on the west toward the coastal flat and ending on the east at Highway 5. Just below Kakazu Ridge on the southeast was the town of Kakazu, a compact group of tile-roofed structures, each surrounded by hedges and stone walls and somewhat in defilade to the adjoining open fields. In and around the Kakazu hills the Japanese had created one of their strongest positions on Okinawa. Mortars dug in on the reverse slope were zeroed-in on the gorge and on vulnerable areas between the gorge and the crest of Kakazu. Several spigot mortars also protected the hill. In an intricate system of coordinated pillboxes, tunnels, and caves Japanese machine-guns were sited to cover all avenues of approach. The enemy was also supported by many artillery pieces within the Shuri fortified zone. The heavy walls and the hedges of the town of Kakazu-and eventually its rubble-afforded the Japanese countless defensive positions. Concurrently, the 383rd Regiment initiated its first coordinated assault on Kakazu Ridge, with Companies A, C, and L swiftly reaching the summit by dawn without detection. However, the surprised defenders quickly launched a fierce counterattack, ultimately forcing Companies A and C to withdraw. Company L, positioned on Kakazu West, continued to fend off enemy counterattacks alone until late afternoon when the exhausted unit had no choice but to retreat. The next day, Brigadier-General Claudius Easley proposed a "powerhouse attack," where the 381st Regiment would assault Kakazu West from positions south of Uchitomari while the 383rd would press on Kakazu Ridge from positions north of the gorge. Following a heavy artillery bombardment, the assault commenced, with the 2nd Battalion of the 381st Regiment rapidly fighting through strong enemy defenses to secure the crest of Kakazu West. However, the 383rd was struggling to make headway, prompting Colonel May to direct his two battalions to execute flanking maneuvers. Although the eastern encirclement was unsuccessful, May's 3rd Battalion managed to cross the gorge at the northern base of Kakazu West to join Colonel Halloran's 2nd Battalion on the crest. Both units then attempted to advance eastward in heavy rain, but relentless Japanese counterattacks forced them back to Kakazu West. Stalemated, Easley eventually ordered Halloran's 1st Battalion to move through May's 3rd Battalion to attack southeast along Kakazu Ridge, but this assault was also repelled by the determined defenders. At the same time, the 382nd Regiment launched its primary assault on Tombstone Ridge, advancing southwest with three battalions in formation but managing to gain only a few hundred yards to the west as fierce defenders thwarted their main offensives against the hills held by the Japanese. Meanwhile, to the east, the 32nd Regiment attempted to advance into the town of Ouki without success, while the 184th Regiment on the heights defended against minor counterattacks, sealed off caves, and solidified their positions. Last we left off, the Tempests were nearing the end of their quest to deliver healing moss to a blighted town along the coast of Kudong Harbor in Takatari. Along the way they picked up a new ally, Lakin, who had promised to aid in their journey if they would return the favor in the near future. As they help distribute the healing brew made from the Yutsushige moss, they encountered a family of elves with a child that bore a striking resemblance to one of their own, the orphaned Moriko. With many questions being asked, and receiving only partial answers from the sick and somewhat delirious father of the household, the Tempests busied themselves with distributing the cure to the rest of the village. The son of the Ito's, Haru, had supposedly gone out to fish earlier that morning and as dusk settled in, he had not yet returned. Tamami, the young daughter, said that this was not terribly unusual, as her brother sometimes took a rest out on the water and would drift to nearby towns along the currents. Moriko however was a bit ill at ease and made the tough choice to meditate towards her ancestral deity, Aerin. The elven god spoke clearly to Moriko and warned of impending danger, though remained somewhat cryptic as to who or why. Fearing the worst, Moriko convinced the others with minimal effort to help her try and find Haru, the only one currently unaccounted for. The tempests then broke the cardinal rule and split the party, eventually leaving Kasumi alone to have a lovely cup of tea with Tamami, while the rest of the Tempests battled fires and dove headlong into a gaping sink hole that had swallowed part of the neighboring coastline to rescue survivors. Last time of the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests had successfully retrieved some moss that supposedly had incredible restorative and healing properties from the Yutsushige Forest after proving their worth to a trio of treants. Their next step was to bring the moss to a village along the coast of Kudong Harbor where an entire stretch was plagued by a savage illness. When they found their way to the Calm Water Piers, Lakin confronted a small child that had been shadowing them through some side alley ways. A young elven girl by the name of Ito Tamami. Somehow the large Orc Warlock convinced the girl that he was no threat and offered to guide her home. Lakin sent up a signal in the form of a magic icicle and shortly after, Moriko arrived to help in what she thought was a fight, only to find Lakin with a child... in a dark alleyway.. Nothing suspicious here. Tamami was sent on her way with Lakin and Moriko returning to the cart, though unknowingly without Fluff, Moriko's companion MothKat. - With the help of Kasumi, Moriko found Fluff sleeping in the home of the elven girl, unharmed and perfectly content. Yoinking Fluff back to her side, they returned to the wagon and the next morning sought out the local Temple to Shenshe were the priestess began working with the moss to create a cure. Returning to Tamami's home, the Tempests offered her parents the first batch of the cure that would hopefully aid in their recovery and perhaps cleanse the whole village. Picking up where we last left off, the Tempests ventured deep into Yutsushige forest in search of a cure-all moss that supposedly grew on the roots of a "Weeping Sequoia". After a short skirmish with a group of Trolls, the party proceeded with a little more caution. Soon, the light in the forest dimmed, the canopy blocking the sunlight until it was almost complete darkness between the trunks of the trees. Thankfully, Moriko has a firm grasp on directions and kept them on track. Or so they thought. Passing by a series of carvings in the trunks of the Sequoias, they passed by similar reliefs, leading them to believe they were going in circles despite Moriko's supreme sense of direction. Beginning to hear and see things deep in the forest, the Tempests decided to rest for the evening and start strong the next dawn. At the end of the final watch, Lakin and Pez realized the Kasumi and Moriko were nowhere to be seen. When trying to locate Zaan, they saw him being carried away by a large hand. Before the two could do anything, they were surrounded by a thick wall of thorns. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Picking up where we last left off, The Tempests had been fairly naughty in the Takatari dynasty, murdering a sizable amount of Redguards who were attempting to apprehend them under the orders of the Shogun's Chief Advisor. After some hefty reprimanding from their acquaintance/kidnapee Tanaka, Kasumi decided that she would turn herself in the next morning. This was a lie however, as Kasumi slipped off in the middle of the night to return the medallion personally. Successfully slipping into the palace grounds, Kasumi was unaware that she had been followed and a short Benny Hill Scene occurred where she tried to shake her pursuer. That is until he threatened the safety of her friends. Submitting to the Kenku, Kasumi was brought before the Shogun and the medallion was returned to its rightful owner. Much to her dismay, Kasumi was not allowed to speak her mind and attempt to explain her decisions, and was instead thrown into the Yamadoku Prison to await her fellow Tempests who had been ordered captured by the Shogun. With surprisingly little hostility, the Tempests were apprehended and brought before the Shogun. Though the Shogun wished them executed, the Chief Advisor Okazaki convinced the Shogun to make use of their skills instead with Community Service. Their first task: Retrieve the moss that grows under the Weeping Sequoia and bring it to the Harbor Town that is currently quarantined and suffering from a plague. Last we left off on the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests got themselves into a bit of a pickle. Early in the day, Tanaka had come calling saying that their presence was requested. Upon exiting the wagon, they discovered their home had been surrounded by a contingent of Redguard soldiers. Tanaka introduced the Chief Advisor of the Shogun, Okazaki, and then slipped into the Redguard ranks. The Chief Advisor demanded that the Shogun's amulet be given to him or else. The Tempests chose "else". A very one-sided battle ensued that ended with them kidnapping Tanaka and escaping in their wagon home. After a very thorough scolding from Tanaka, they let him go free. Wracked with guilt and confusion, Kasumi declared that they would be returning in the morning to turn themselves in. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Last we left off on the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests had a wonderfully spicy dinner date with their new friend, Tanaka, and learned a bit more of the dire nature of things around Chunsu and Takatari as a whole. The next day was filled with wandering shopping as Kasumi had many of her fellows buy clothing that would help them to fit in a bit better with the locals and Brick found himself a slew of books to read to continue his research of the arcane. Taking some time to relax within the city, the Tempests awaited word from Taiko Suki on whether they'd be able to meet with the Shogun or not. We rejoin them now as Tanaka greets them in their own home, announcing Taiko Suki's desire to speak with the Tempests. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Last we left off on the Tales of Archeron, (Many moons ago) the Tempests had traveled halfway across the Takatari Empire to the capital city of Chunsu to finally lay to rest Kasumi's redemption quest, only to be faced with hardship, horror, and a significant amount of red tape. Barred from seeing the Shogun personally, the Tempests received help from a local Redguard named Tanaka to set up a meeting with Taiko Suki, the Overseer of the People. They met with her to see if there was any way to gain an audience with the Takatari ruler. Not terribly hopeful, Taiko Suki agreed to speak with those above her to have an audience arranged if possible. Now left to their own devices, the Tempests wandered the city of Chunsu until they received word from Taiko Suki. We rejoin the Tempests now as they wait for their hot dinner date with Tanaka. Last we left off on the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests had made their way into Kasumi's homeland of Takatari, but not the verdant landscape she was expecting to see. Dead and dying fields, barren farmlands, malnourished wildlife, and aggressive local monsters greeted them each day. Concerned for the well being of her home, Kasumi urged Cassie to travel day and night to reach their destination as quickly as possible, the capitol city Chunsu. After a brief battle against a group of giants the day before, the Tempests arrived at the outskirts of Chunsu where they received directions from a local as to how they could enter the city proper. Last time on the Tales of Archeron, the Tempests descended into Takatari after encountering the two deities, Tlazocoatl and Shenshe, atop their mountain home where they gave their advice, blessings, and gifts to aid them on their journey forward. Making landfall, Kasumi became concerned with the state of her homeland. Much of the grass and vegetation is dead or dying. The vast farmlands are barren and there are few souls traveling the roadways. With a growing sense of unease, Kasumi asked Cassie to continue traveling throughout the day and night on their way to Chunsu. The Tempests were greeted with more and more images of the sickened land: from malnourished wolves, to a pile of corpses not far from the roadside. Along the way, their wagon was hit by a severe earthquake that dislodged many items inside, they encountered a chest weasel that seemed to feed off of frustration and departed after giving the Tempests a few gifts for their efforts, and they came upon a giant hole in the ground surrounded by a handful of locals peering down within. As we proceed into a new chapter we'll take a quick look back on what has transpired on The Tales of Archeron, The Tempests had traveled to Aztlan so they could fix their companion Brick who had a faulty core. Traveling and fighting through treacherous oceanic mountains, the Tempests sought out the necessary magical stones, and subsequently discovered some interfering cultists skulking about, and gained a new companion, Moriko - The Silent Blossom. Though they were unable to discover their motives the Tempests thwarted the cultists they came across and reported their presence to the Aztlan military. After killing and unkilling a rare creature to retrieve the final stones needed to craft Brick's new core, they returned to the mainland to find that Chichimec had been attacked by the same Cultists, damaging many of the forges within, slaying their beast of burden Cassie, and kidnapping both G3-MENI and Borgrir. With Chimali injured during the attack, Pez was an incredible asset in helping complete Brick's rebuild, updating not only his core, but his entire physical being. The ritual to transfer Brick's consciousness to his new body went off without a hitch... except for Brick attempting to make a joke that went off "swimmingly". With almost no time to prepare, the Empress of Aztlan, an Aarakocra named Izel, visited Chichimec to personally check in on the repairs and to meet the heroes who uncovered the cultist's meddling. Just in time for the Cultists to meddle once again with the Tempest's previous nemesis, Zephyrus. To complicate things further, another Greim joined the fray, but the Tempests were not to be bested and wiped the Cultists, and Saedhir's beast, off the face of Archeron... But not without casualties on their side as well. Hambjerger was slain during the fray. The Tempests accepted the Empress' offer to bring them back to Colatl to reward their good deeds and along the way, Pez had a heart to heart with Coyote about the loss of his little feathered friend. Accepting Coyote's deal, Hambjerger was revived within the Orc Lands and it is now up to Pez to overcome his fear to find his companion. Performing a ritual provided to them by Chimali, Cassie's spirit was infused into their wagon home, dubbing it "Cassie's Sanctuary". Though it unnerved a few in the party, their wagon home was now self propelling and sentient. The Tempests spent a few days in Colatl, the capital city of Aztlan, and were heralded as heroes to the empire and Moriko was introduced into civilization and the wonderful past time of candle licking. Visiting the temple to the local deity, a few of the Tempests sought out guidance and received some very clear directions. Following the whims of Tlazocoatl, the Tempests headed North towards Takatari with a slight detour up the Dragon Lover's Mountain where they were visited by both Tlazocoatl and Shenshe in the divine flesh. It was here that the Tempests received a blessing from the deities, Kasumi was given all of her tails back plus a curious vision, and Brick was gifted with a scale from Tlazocoatl to help aid in his desire to protect his family. - We rejoin the Tempests now as their skyship slowly descends down into the land of Takatari. Last time on The Tales of Archeron, The Tempests enjoyed a few extra days living in the capitol city Colatl. They checked on their orders from the various Aztlan tradesmen and even enjoyed an afternoon of pampering at the Sunset Bathhouse. Soon enough, their audience with the Empress was set and they met early in the morning to, much to their horror, address the entirety of Colatl. While Moriko and Kasumi froze up like deer in headlights, Pez and Brick stepped forward to say a few words towards the citizenry and seemed to have been met with excitement and approval. The Tempests then joined Empress Izel to a lavish breakfast, wherein Pez educated the Aztlan nobles into the finer arts of Western music. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our intro jingle. Picking up where we last left off, the Tempests have ventured into the Tepetl Mountains within the Aztlan empire in search of elemental cores that could be used to fix Brick's malfunctioning ticker. The Tempests managed to collect a core from a Geyser Elemental and defended themselves valiantly from an ambush set by some cultists belonging to the Order of the Transcendant Maw. They returned to the Itiko base camp and relayed everything they'd seen and learned. Moriko got some real clothes for the first time and had some fan girls gush over her existance. Kasumi was denied in her attempt at using her 'pretty girl privilage' while in search of some soldiers whos names she'd forgotten. Soon enough, they headed off in a cargo ship towards the center of the Tepetl Mountains, to a region known as Tlahko. A huge shoutout to Nick Black who made our new intro jingle. This week's guest is the media artist Kasumi whose career ranges from musician, filmmaker, author, designer, illustrator and painter. Her work features short and feature length experimental films, live shows, VJ, and public art projection, creating looping electronic sculptures, designing motion graphics and animated gifs, producing immersive 360 virtual reality pieces and making fine art prints and wearable art. Kasumi studied music at the Stadliche Musik Hochschule in Cologne, Germany playing the lute. She then moved to Japan, where she lived for 12 years and taught Baroque music at the Tokyo College of Music. Kasumi performed as a soloist throughout Japan, Europe and the U.S., recorded four albums, and performed twice at the Carnegie Hall. Whilst living in Japan, Kasumi explored her writing and published her first book; The Way of the Urban Samurai, in 1992. Kasumi married and raised her son, Kitao Sakurai who became a renown filmmaker. While simultaneously pursuing her work in painting and set design she continued to publish writings on music, politics and social issues for among others; the Asahi Shimbun, The Japan Financial Journal, The Early Music Quarterly Tokyo, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Sacramento Bee. From prints and collage to films and video art installations at the Rocket Mortgage Field House; at the Lincoln Center with The New York Philharmonic and Carnegie Hall; performances with Grandmaster Flash and DJ Spooky; public art at The Cleveland Museum of Art, DC Tower, Vienna, and Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires; VR 360, post-production, and gifs for The Eric Andre Show; and interactive art-making apps. Kasumi's work Surfacing, developed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, was expanded into a solo exhibition for The Sculpture Center. Perhaps her most impactful production came after being awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 when she embarked on the feature-length film project, ‘Shockwaves', which included 25,000 plus short public domain film samples. It proved to be a life-changing project, which she says ‘was like being in therapy for five years'. Kasumi's next production is ‘Farandole', an hour long cinematic assemblage, selected as part of Lincoln Center Presents Women and Non-binary Artists in Tech. It will screen at 6:30 pm on March 14 at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. Free and open to the public. Picking up where we last left off, the Tempests set forth into the Tepetl Mountains to start searching for elemental cores powerful enough to repair their companion, Brick. With the aid of G3-MENI, they were able to teleport across the sea into the Itiko Region to begin their quest. G3-MENI was able to introduce the Tempests to the Commander in charge of the region and shortly after, set forth into the treacherous spires. They stumbled upon a unique Ooze and with the aid of Moriko, squished it into a puddle of goo. Moriko agreed to aid the Tempests in their quest so long as they helped figure out why the elementals were becoming so aggressive. With the tentative truce in place, six of them set forth to look for clues as to the whereabouts of a large elemental and to keep their peepers peepled for any sign of why the locals were so riled up. After dealing with some ornery kobolds and meeting with some pleasant soldiers, they had their first lead: A large elemental sighting on the other side of the Mokeupa. Traveling further around the Mokuepa, Kasumi and Pez became incredibly hostile and irate, snapping and yelling at everyone and everything. Curing the pair of them, the Tempests carried on, being a bit more cautious than before. Though perhaps not quite as careful as they should have been. Crossing another rope bridge, the party was attacked by a trio of elementals. The Tempests have made it to Aztlan with the goal of fixing Brick's malfunctioning core. A sizable task lies ahead of them however, the materials needed can only be found within large elementals that roam through the Tepetl Mountains off the coast of Aztlan. The mountains are a range of gigantic spires that stretch high out of the ocean depths, leaving no solid ground to stand on but the treacherous peaks and rickety rope bridges that span between them. G3-MENI transported the Tempests to the Itiko outpost to start their search, an area she was fairly familiar with. The Tempests took a flying skiff that G3-MENI chartered, to redeem an owed favor, and were dropped off near a location marked on their map: a pink leafy tree. As the party traveled through the undergrowth, they came upon an odd looking rock which Kasumi crept forward to investigate. Suddenly, a figure dropped down from the canopy to try and warn the Tempests, but it was too late. The party were attacked by a slime that seemed to repel most attacks, but eventually prevailed (Even after Hambjerger died several times). After the fight, Zaan rounded on their new guest and interrogated them. The figure was known as Moriko, or as the locals referred to her, The Silent Blossom. Picking up where we last left off, the Tempests had finally made it across the Alboran Sea, defeated a mysterious beast that had supposedly been sent after them, and are now in the Aztlanian port city of Chalco. The first stop was to a bathhouse where they could clean themselves up after being on the open ocean for the better part of a month. The Jug of Many Things was passed around and Pez was a bit unlucky, falling asleep for what should have been two days. They then found a very uniquely styled Inn that pandered to five different regions across the world. First going to the Takatari wing, Kasumi introduced them all to her culture and in the process, Zaan, being the dick he is, force fed Pez some Sake and inadvertently caused the Kobold to vomit up the mix of alcohol and the remaining magic brew. Zaan and Brick stayed in the Rokasing wing, enjoying a night revelry, fighting, and hefty amounts of meat, while Kasumi and Pez stayed in the Takatari wing where things were calm, peaceful, and quite colorful. After a night's rest, they collected their wagon that had been retrieved from the beached ship, collected Cassie, and began asking around the city for how to get to Chichimec. Along the way they witnessed a fantastical sight! A ship sailing through the air! Perhaps this was a quicker way to get across the empire. Last time we spoke about the failure of diplomacy between the Empires of Russian and Japan as well as the Yellow Peril. The Russians said they would demobilize and pull out of Manchuria, but when the time actually came to do so, they suddenly had a change of heart. Japan felt threated, but extended the hand of diplomacy trying to thwart beginning a war against a great power. Tsar Nicholas II was being egged on by his cousin Kaiser Wilhelm II, who utilized Yellow Peril rhetory to push Russia into a war with Japan. The Russians did not put up a serious effort when it came to diplomacy, basically insulting Japan. Japan could only swallow so much, until she would take violent actions. The entire world was in for quite a shock, because a Sun was about to rise and a Bear was about to tumble. #74 The Russo-Japanese War Part 1: The Surprise attack on Port Arthur Welcome to the Fall and Rise of China Podcast, I am your dutiful host Craig Watson. If you are still hungry for some more history related content, over on my channel, the Pacific War Channel where I cover the history of China and Japan from the 19th century until the end of the Pacific War. On January 13th of 1904, Japan proposed to Russia that she would recognize Russia's sphere of influence over Manchuria if Russia would respect her's over Korea. It was a generous offer to maintain the peace, but Russia counter proposed that Japan respect her sphere of influence over Manchuria, and that Korea was basically open grounds. It was to be frank, an insult. It seemed clear to the Japanese the Russians were not serious about diplomacy, in fact they were biding time to build up their military strength in Asia. In February of 1904, Prime Minister Katsura's cabinet decided for war. You really have to take a step back and look at what a colossal decision that was. Russia was a great power, Japan was considered an emerging regional power. Japan had defeated the Qing dynasty, yes, but in the minds of the great powers, this was nothing more than two lesser nations battling it out. A lot of the attitudes of the day were as you can imagine, racist. The idea of a non white nation going to war against a white nation let alone a great power, was ridiculous. So how did Japan think she was going to defeat a larger empire like Russia? For Japan the prospect of victory would rely on a pre-emptive strike against her fleet anchored at Port Arthur, sound a bit familiar? Yes in many ways you can think of this as a Pearl Harbor prequel. The idea similar to Pearl Harbor was to deliver a surprise attack and then issue the formal declaration of war. In the Pacific the Russian Far East fleet consisted of 7 battleships, 6 cruisers and 13 destroyers at Port Arthur. At Vladivostok there were 4 first class cruisers, with a number of torpedo boats. At Chemulpo in Korea were the protected cruisers Varya and gunboat Koreyetz. A crucial component of the conflict would be commanding the sea ways. Both nations recognized this fact all too well. The Russian far east fleet was constrained from year the round training by being icebound in Vladivostok for 3 months of the year. Her fleet was also a ragtag bunch with different armaments, speed, armor and flexibility. Russia was dependent on foreign built ships, though she was fully capable of building her own. Russia had ships built from Britain, Germany, France and the US. The Russian navy was based on conscription at 7 years with 3 years of reserve. The IJN combined fleet consisted of 6 battleships, 10 cruisers, 40 destroyers and 40 smaller vessels, led by Vice Admiral Heihachiro Togo. The Russian ships were a hotchpotch of differing types, armaments and speeds, with a varied amount of armor protection. The Japanese ships were nearly all British built, uniform and faster. Alcohol excess amongst Russian crews was a serious problem. Baltic crews spent the 6 months of winter ashore because the gulf of Finland froze and because of bureaucratic demand for uniformity. So did the crews of the Black Sea fleet. Thus, Russian sailors spent less time at sea and less time training. The Japanese navy under British instruction spent more time at sea, and trained intensively. Japanese sailors were literate, while most Russian sailors were not. These variables would come out to play when dealing with steam-driven warships, the most technologically advanced weapons of the day. Japan held an advantage over the Russians: an intricate spy network run by Baron Akashi Motojiro. He was sent as a roaming military attache all over Europe and, by 1902, moved to Saint Petersburg, setting up a network using locally-based Japanese merchants, workers and others sympathetic to Japan, making sure to pay more than the Russians did. He gathered valuable information on troop movements and naval development, and began to support Russian extremists such as Litvinoff, Orlovsky and Lenin. It is alleged he recruited the famous spy Sidney Reilly, who went to Manchuria and Port Arthur secretly gathering intelligence and, if it is to be believed, alongside his acquaintance Ho Liang Shung, stole the Port Arthur harbor defense plans and sold it to the IJN. Allegedly, Vice-Admiral Togo was given some false information from Reilly and other spies around Port Arthur about the garrison there being on full alert. This led him to not want to risk his capital ships against a well-prepared enemy. He thus elected to send a destroyer force to surprise-attack Port Arthur. To prepare for the war, the Japanese had troopships prepared in predetermined positions, already loaded with provisions and munitions. Aboard his flagship, Admiral Togo read to his admirals a message from Emperor Meiji before all of them lifted a glass of champagne and gave a few bonzai's. The Japanese press were forced into utmost secrecy, everything possible was concealed. As the combined fleet departed on the morning of February the 7th, they had an agreement, whether at Port Arthur or if the Russian fleet found them first, the Japanese would fire first. The IJN combined fleet made a rendezvous south of Chemulpo around Lindsay island. They were met by the Akashi who had been tasked with surveying the Russian navy's movements in the region. The Akashi reported the Russian naval forces had not departed Port Arthur, everyone sighed with relief. The Russian naval forces outside Port Arthur were the unprotected cruisers Varyag and an old gunboat called the Koreyetz, both at anchor in Chemulpo. Chemulpo was a designated landing spot for the IJA, three troopships carrying 2500 troops detached from the combined fleet escorted by the armored cruisers Asama, Takachiho, Nanussa, unarmored cruisers Suma and Akashi and two torpedo boats. Commanding the small detachment was Rear Admiral Uriu. The Japanese intelligence indicated, alongside the two Russian warships there was numerous warships from other nations. The HMS Talbot, USS Vicksburg, Italy's Elba, Frances Pascal and Japans protected cruiser Chiyoda were anchored there. Chiyoda slipped out of the port to meet up with the incoming Uriu who forwarded the information on the international presence. Uriu worried about the political consequences of attacking the Russians in the harbor next to international warships which was against international law. If they could lure the Russians out of the harbor it would be much better politically. Meanwhile the Russians were in a bit of an awkward state. Many believed hostilities could break out at any moment, but did not have orders to attack first. The commander of the Koreyetz was quite nervous and wanted to receive an update from Port Arthur on the political situation so he departed from the harbor during the early afternoon. Unluckily for the Koreyetz she came across the incoming Japanese. Upon discovering the incoming ships were Japanese, the Koreyetz turned around, but some of her gunners were too trigger happy and fired two ineffectual shots. The Koreyetz fled back to her anchorage beside the Varyag and Russian steamer Sungari. The 3 captains quickly met watching the Japanese warships also anchor within the harbor. Soon they could see the Japanese troopships unloaded troops and provisions around 6pm on February 8th. The Japanese troops went to work occupying the city and by 3am on the 9th, four IJA battalions of the 12th division had unloaded without incident. Rear admiral Uriu sent a letter to the senior Russian commander, Captain Stefanov advising him that hostilities existed between their two nations and that the Russian ships must leave the neutral port of Chemulpo. He also indicated he spoke to the other nationalities captains warning them to stay clear if a fire fight broke out in the harbor. The Russians had until noon to comply, if they stayed at 4pm, Uriu would attack. Captain Stefanov ran over to the HMS Talbot to plead with her British captain to get the international ships to restrain the Japanese or help escort them out to sea. Captain Denis Bagly of the Talbot went out to meet Uriu with a letter signed by the other captains protesting the violation of a neutral port. Bagly had no illusions it was a useless gesture and he bid farewell to Stefanov, advising the man he should try to escape or surrender. Stefanov spoke with his fellow captains and they agreed surrender was not an option. At 11am, outgunned and outnumbered the two Russian warships departed the anchorage in front of numerous spectators. Varyags band played ‘god save the Tsar” as the sailors sang the anthem. They sailed directly at the awaiting Japanese fleet. Upon seeing the Russians come out, the Asama trained her 8 inch guns on the Varyag and at a range of 4 miles opened fire. The new Shimose shells began to hit Varyag and soon Chiyoda added her guns to the duel. Eye witness, reporter Thomas Cowen had this to say of the scene “Her decks were being torn and riven, and men were dashed down in mangled heaps all round each gun, for the guns had no shields to protect their crews. Like the furious windsqualls in the height of a hurricane came the bursting of terrible explosives all the length of the ship, shattering and burning and sweeping away men and pieces of machinery indiscriminately” The Varyag's crew literally ran out of men to carry away the wounded on deck. A shell smashed into the bridge to the left of the captain killing his runner. Another shell hit to the captains right killing his bugler and taking some of the side of his face. Most of Varyags guns were silenced, she took a hit below the waterline and was listing to port. Despite all of this, the able men kept to their duty, trying to maneuver the ship by the propellers after her steering gear had been shot off. With no way to fight the enemy the captain ordered them to return to port and the maneuver left Koreyetz exposed to fire for the first time. Koreyetz could not even fire upon the enemy because her range was too limited and soon the Chiyoda began to fire upon her. Koreyetz captain decided to simply follow the crippled and on fire Varyag. Suddenly the gunfire ceased, the Japanese went back to where they anchored before and the two Russian warships did the same. Varyags superstructures were flattened, two of her four funnels were blown off and her masts as well. The Russian survivors were quickly taken aboard the Talbot, Elba and Pascal. The Russian captains had decided to scuttle the three ships. As the explosives went off, the band aboard the Elba played the Russian anthem. The Japanese sailors all bowed in a salute. Later within Chemulpo some of the Russian sailors would be treated by Japanese medical staff and all were permitted to return to Russia on parole, so that they would not take up arms again during the war. Admiral Togo took the rest of the fleet to another rendezvous point, this time at Elliot island, some 65 miles east of Port Arthur. Togo's fleet was divided into three divisions. The 1st division consisted of the 6 battleships, Asahi, Hatsuse, Shikishima, Yashima, Fuji and Togo's flagship Mikasa. They had an overall speed of 18 knots and a displacement of 12300-15000 tons with broadsides weighing some 4000 lbs. The 2nd division consisted of armored cruisers, the Yagumo, Izumo, Iwate, Azuma and Tokiwa with an average speed of 24 knots. The third division consisted of unarmored cruisers Chitose, Takasago, Yoshino and Kasagi. Additionally 15 destroyers armed with the brand new Whitehead torpedo capable of 30 knots and 20 torpedo boats would take up the role of picquet. Over in Port Arthur's harbor the inner line consisted of 5 Russian battleships, Sevastopol, Petropavlovsk, Peresvyet, Pobieda and Poltava. In the middle line were the battleships Tsarevitch and Retvizan, alongside 3 cruisers. In the southernmost line were 3 other cruisers along with the duty ship Pallada. Patroling outside the harbor were destroyers Rastoropni and Bezstrashni around 20 miles out. The commander of the Russian Far Eastern Fleet was Vice Admiral Oscar Victorovitch Stark. It just so happened on February 8th he had planned a large birthday party for his wife. The guests would include Viceroy and Supreme Commander Admiral Alexeiev, his chief of staff Vice Admiral Witgeft, Starks deputy Rear admiral Uktomski and a plethora of other commanders and their wives. Stark actually suspected the Japanese would attack, most likely utilizing torpedoes in a surprise, but the Viceroy refused to allow him to prepare the fleet for war. None the less Stark ordered his captains to prepare to repel torpedo attacks. He ordered all ships to put out anti-torpedo nets and be prepared for action. However, several ships did not carry out these orders and did not take the situation seriously despite multiple night alarms. Many main battery guns were unloaded, many nets uncast, entire crews lay asleep in hammocks, and the two patrolling destroyers were told not to fire if they saw anything, but instead to report it to the CIC. This was because the Tsar had instructed his far Eastern forces, for political reasons, that if war should occur, Japan must be seen to have started it. Alongside this, the majority of the officer corps would be celebrating on the shore and at a party hosted by Admiral Starck for the birthday of his wife on the deck of his flagship, the Petropavlovsk. The celebrating crowd would in fact mistake explosions as cannon salutes for her birthday party. At 7pm Togo released his destroyers, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd flotillas had orders to proceed to Port Arthur while the 4th and 5th would try to ambush any Russian ships sailing around Dalny. 10 destroyers were enroute to Port Arthur, each warship held crews of around 50 men, armed with two 12 pounder guns, 4 6 pounders and two torpedoes. The 1st Flotilla consisted of the destroyers : Shirakumo, Asashio, Kasumi, Akatsuki; 2nd Flotilla: Inazuma, Oboro, Ikazuchi; 3rd Flotilla: Usugumo, Shinonome, Sazanami. They used stearch lights, went towards Liau-ti-chan, allegedly using stolen plans from Sidney Reilly to navigate through the Russian minefield protecting the harbor. At 10:50pm, the 1st flotilla came across the two Russian destroyers on patrol, the Rastoropni and Bezstrashni. This prompted the 1st squadron to douse their lights, trying to avoid detection and slip past. During the process, the Japanese destroyer Oboro collided with the Ikazuchi, disabling her and blocking the path of the Inazuma. This in turn led the flotillas to become separated and were forced to act independently, with the Inazuma becoming lost and the Oboro limping slowly. 20 minutes after midnight, the 1st flotilla arrived, seeing Russian warship searchlights. Approaching closer they saw 3 ranks of ships and then the cruisers Pallada saw the Japanese destroyers, but presumed they were the returning Rastoropni and Bezstrashni. The Rastoropni and Bezstrashni had no radios and were rushing back to try and report the incoming Japanese. At 11:50pm Captain Asai Shojero aboard the Shiragumo gave the attack signal. The four destroyers turned to port and increased their speed to 30 knots before releasing two torpedoes each and turning southwards. The Shiragumo fired the first two torpedoes, followed by two from the Asashio. Because the Pallada was more active, she received more attention than the rest. Pallada was hit amidship, caught fire and began to keel over. Retvizan was hit next at her bow creating a hole large enough for a car to pass through. Tsesarevitch's steering gear was hit. When the explosion of the hit against Pallada was heard many of the Russian ships began firing wildly. The Kasumi fired her two torpedoes, followed by the Akatsuki. Ikazuhi acting alone, came to the scene and fired a single torpedo before fleeing south as well. The 3rd flotilla attracted by the explosions rushed to the scene, finding some lights approaching them, they doused their lights and stopped their engines. It turned out to be the Inazuma who had got lost and requested to join them. They continued finding the Russians ships in a wild disarray. Usugumo was the first to fire, followed by Shinonime and Inazuma before they made their escape south. Meanwhile the Sazanami had been separated from all the others since 11 pm, but had managed to slip past the two russian destroyers around 1:25am and came in to fire a single torpedo before also departing south. The last ship was the damaged Oboro who attempted to repair herself before limping towards the enemy. At 1:45am she fired a torpedo and made her escape. The Russians had been caught completely by surprise. Their skeleton crews aboard the battleships had no idea what was occurring. Many men tumbled out of their bunks awaiting orders, orders that never came. To further explain, when a ship is in action each individual has his own designated tasks, but when an attack comes unexpectedly and a large number of the crew are absent, orders have to be given on the spur of the moment. The explosions were heard by many in the city of Port Arthur, but countless assumed it to be fireworks for celebration. The Russians wild attempts at firing back upon the enemy were useless. The Norvik was the only ship to give chase to the enemy. The torpedo attack killed two officers, 29 sailors and wounded 8 others. Pallada was grounded under the western battery in the harbor; Retvizan was grounded on a ledge near the entrance passage and Tsesarevitch was grounded close to Retvizan. Out of a total of 16 torpedoes launched, only 3 found targets. A major reason for this was luckily due to the few crews who had deployed anti torpedo nets as suggested by Starck. By the way if you would like to see a visual representation of the attack, there is a fantastic Japanese series on the Russo Japanese war called “Saka no Ue no Kumo” narrated by the legendary Ken Watanabe. On my personal channel the pacific war channel one of my most popular episodes is on the Russo-Japanese war, and I used a lot of footage from the series. I will admit I embarrasingly messed up the episode by speeding up the narration somewhat because it was simply too long, but its still ok. By the time this podcast comes out I hope its alright to say, I have been writing a 10 part Russo Japanese War series for Kings and Generals and the animation will look awesome. But back to the story. Starcks staff briefed him on what had occurred and he immediately reported it to the Viceroy in a manner of “i told you so”. Starck most likely hoped the Viceroy would shoulder the blame alongside him, but instead rumors were spread to exaggerate the fact he was having a party for his wife during the event. None the less the two admirals quickly began to plan their next steps as they both assumed the IJN combined fleet was about to come in an attack them. The viceroy sent a message appealing for everyone to stay calm in the city while Starck ordered the fleet to be made ready for sea immeidately. Countless officers and sailors scrambled to get to their ships. Following the attack, at 8am, Togo dispatched Vice Admiral Dewa Shigeto with the four cruisers of the 3rd flottila to investigate Port Arthur and, if possible, lure them out south of Encounter Rock. At 9am, Dewa observed 9 Russian warships getting ready for sea, with 3 aground. The smaller vessels, such as gunboats, torpedo boats and mine planters were outside the harbor looking to be in disarray. Dewa approached within 7500 yards of the harbor, but no one fired upon him. This prompted Dewa to believe the Russians were completely paralyzed. Dewa wireless-messaged Togo that the Russians seemed to be paralyzed, the time was ripe to attack. Togo had wanted to lure the Russians away from Port Arthur's shore batteries, but the report prompted him to order an immediate attack. The Russian formation was quite all over the place. Askold was to the east, Bayan in the center, Novik was far to the west having attempted to chase the enemy, many of the other ships were still at anchor. Togo devised his 3 divisions to form a column coming in one after the other, each ship was to fire starboard. The Japanese approached the harbor at 11:55am. Port Arthur was tossed into pure chaos. Warships moved quickly to jettison inflammable material while coolies in sampans paddled through the jetsam. Captains lept about demanding status reports of their ships while all they could see was dakr smudges on the horizon. At a range of 8500 meters, the Mikasa was the first to fire her guns. After firing her 12inch forward gun, she turned and opened fire with her starboard broadside, the other ships followed in same fashion. The Russian shore batteries erupted firing back on the Japanese causing a duel between the warships 12 inch guns aimed at the shore batteries while their 8 and 6 inch guns targetted the Russia nwarships. The Mikasa took a full 20 minutes to form her pass and was followed by Asahi, Fuji, Yashima, Shikishima and Hatsuse. Asahi targeted a Peresviet type, Fuji & Yashima fired upon cruiser Bayan, Shikishima fired on a ship in the center and Hatsuse dueled the enemy nearest to her. With the exception of Novik, the Russian moved like ants around a nest beneath their fort guns, trying not to make themselves stationary targets. The Novik charged out of the harbor to meet the enemy and received a hell of a mauling for it. The Russian flagship Petropavlosvk flying Starcks flag was battered; Poltava took a hit and cruisers Diana and Askold were severely damaged. The damage was not a one way street however, Mikasa, Shikishima, Fuji, Hatsuse and Iwate took hits. The shore batteries were becoming increasingly effective. When the 2nd and 3rd divisions were making their turn, everything had become like a barrom brawl. Within just 5 minutes of the dueling, Mikasa had taken a 10 inch shell to her starboard side which ricocheted and exploded under her mainmast. Her chief engineer, a staff officer, a paymaster, one midshipman and 3 crew members were wounded, and part of her aft bridge was carried away. The Fuji received a shell through her forward casing, smashing a stack and exploding, killing a turret officer and wounding many. Shikishima then received a hit to her forward stack causing it to explode. By 12:20, Admiral Togo realized that Dewa was incorrect in his assessment - the enemy was not paralyzed - thus he motioned the fleet to withdraw. After just a single run of it, Togo had decided to back out and rendezvous with Uriu at Chemulpo. The departing maneuver exposed Togo's entire fleet to the full brunt of the Russian shore batteries. The Hatsuse, Fuji, Shikishima and Mikasa would take the lionshare of the damage, around 7 hits distributed amongst them. As the fleet made its turning point, the IJN cruisers took several hits. Within the 2nd Division: Azuma fired upon Novik, Iwate fired upon Askold, Iwaki fired upon Askold and then Bayan. As the cruisers turned to port to follow the 1st division Azuma was hit by three shells, one to her battle flag, the other off the water of her starboard quarter exploding, the third to her after turret. Yakumo was hit twice one to her forward main top and midshipman. Novik received many hits and fired torpedoes at Iwate missing. Within the 3rd Division: Chitose (flag of admiral Dewa) fired on center, Takasago fired on Bayan, Kasagi fired upon a Sevastopol type, Takumo fired on nearest enemy ship. Takasago and Chitose then fired on Askold which alone came closer to them, a shell his Askolds second stack, another her forward stack. Chitose then attack Novik and Takasgo attacked Bayan. As they turned to withdraw they received no major hits. The IJN cruisers also launched salvos of torpedoes. The Novik trying to engage them closer evaded the torpedoes, but took several shells below her waterline. The Japanese finally got out of range of the dreaded batteries of Port Arthur, lucky to not have any ships sunk. The casualties were quite balanced for the engagement. The Russians had 150, the Japanese betwene 90 and 130. Neither had any warships sunk, but many were severely damaged. For the Japanese this was not a major issue, their damaged ships returned to Sasebo for immediate repairs, however for the Russians this was a major issue. Port Arthur held limited capabilities, they had only one small dry dock and another incomplete. This meant some of the larger Russian warships could not receive proper repairs, and now they were blockaded. Many 12 inch shells had fallen into the city. The Russo-Chinese bank was hit causing the employees to frantically burn the currency and prepare coins to be transported away. Lumps of coal littered the city grounds like confetti. Many Chinese grabbed their belongings and fled the city aboard steamers. Many buildings were damaged, civilian casualties were light. When the news of the surprise attack reached Tsar Nicholas II he was stunned. He could not believe the Japanese would initiate a warlike actions without formally declaring war first. His advisers had assured him the Japanese had been bluffing and would not dare attack. The first secretary of the British embassy, Cecil Spring Rice went on the record to state the Tsar was left “almost incredulous”. Japan issued their declaration of war 3 hours after the surprise attack. Russia went on a war footing on the 10th and a few days later submitted their official declaration of war after stating to the international community Japans actions were dishonorable. In response Japan referenced the Russian attack on Sweden in 1808, which they did without declaring war first as a justification somewhat for their own actions. The international community were mixed in their favor, but many did sympathize with the Japanese. Notably President Theodore Roosevelt held sympathetic views for the Japanese and the Japanese would take a strong notice to this. Admiral Togo was dissapointed in his lack of success with the surprise torpedo attack. But for now Japan had won command of the sea, the Russian navy was trapped. From Chemulpo, Togo sailed his damaged ships back to Sasebo for repairs, but would go on the record to state “He felt he failed to take the opportunity as Nelson would have done, to deal a blow to the Russian fleet from which they would not recover”. If you are still hungry after that, give my personal channel a look over at The Pacific War Channel at Youtube, it would mean a lot to me. Admiral Togo had delivered the very first blow of the Russo-Japanese war. His surprise attack upon Port Arthur was a bold and terrific strategy, but had he done enough to give Japan the upper hand in the battles to come?

Picking up where we left off last time, Shirahama had been slain, Vanera reclaimed her mink, Khione, and Kasumi finally obtained the medallion she'd been accused of stealing so long ago. The Tempests settled their deal with Silver Paw and then traveled to Harpermere using the Gateway Ring Brick had in his possession. Suave decided to go with the Tempests in an attempt to lay low for a while.. Which went about as well as you would expect. Kasumi and Pez started blabbing to King Damien that they had brought a pirate into his Kingdom and was understandably miffed. But.. So far, the King seems to be ignoring Suave's presence in lieu of the Tempest's prior reputation. Vanera received word from Nefeli that her presence was urgently needed back in the Misty Pass, and convinced Suave to help her get there. Picking up where we left off last time: The Tempests recruited the assistance of the pirate known as Suave to help them in taking down the infamous pirate, Shirahama. Brick, Kasumi, and Suave attempted to find out if the mink or the medallion were located in Shirahama's residence in High Tide, but were unsuccessful. They were successful in gaining a tail however. The tailing men's intentions were never discovered as Vanera beat one's nose in with a door with a clever use of Thaumaturgy. After losing their tail, the party decided to visit Yo'HoBold and managed to sneak Pez into investigating Shirahama's ship as “free labor” after Yo'HoBold's services had been requested to fix Shirahama's ship, which had supposedly been in a battle out at sea. Pez tried his best to sabotage her ship, but was met with a very distrustful Owlin known as, The Watchman. Shortly after, the Tempests decided to stop pussyfooting around and set up an ambush for the Takatari pirate. Brick cleverly portrayed himself as the property of Zaan and was almost sold to Shirahama. Using his “Middle Finger” gun in an attempt to assassinate Shirahama, a fight broke out. During which, Vanera reclaimed her mink Khione, Zaan managed to lodge a chest of gold into the chest cavity of a goblin, and Brick was clearly losing an underwater boxing match with a Giff named Reggie until the others intervened. At long last, Zaan dealt the final blow to the Takatari pirate, driving his blade deep into her skull and riding her corpse into the shallows of the bay. The Watchman fled and the Giff was eventually slain. Time seemed to slow, the water being held back by Zaan began rushing inward but now stood like a solid wall. A brief moment of darkness took over their vision as their consciousnesses were whisked far away back to the land of sand, heat, and desolation.. Deep into the mines of Drybell where an Illithid had prepared a ‘fungeon' for the Tempests to enjoy. Shenanigans were had, loot was collected, and a battle against some strong Golems took place wherein the creations attacked even their creator. A bit flustered after another brush with death by the hands of his own creations, Qhip released the Tempest's minds and sent them back to their bodies where barely a breath had passed. The Tempests had thwarted the assassination attempts on Princess Ena's life and got a few more puzzling clues towards Zaan's past. Returning to Harpermere with good news, it seemed that the wedding was back on. But before that, the party checked in with Archmage Otus and learned that the Kadali Ruins had been acting strangely. After a quick, confusing visit to see Grandmaster Puck, the Tempests were given permission to explore the ruins, but only after the wedding to avoid any potential complications at Otus' request. And what a wedding it was. Otus escorted Vanera to the Wedding and seemed to be an accomplished dancer in his own right. Zaan found himself a partner with Lieutenant Yvonne, a lynx tabaxi, and danced the night away with her until the pair eventually disappeared into the night. King Damien informed Brick and Kasumi, who were avidly avoiding the dance floor, that a ship had been chartered to take them to High Tide as promised for their efforts. The captain of the vessel would allow no idle hands aboard his ship and would require the party to train for a time to become familiar with working aboard the vessel. The king and Emma then forcibly took the pair against their will to the dance floor and after a time, everyone found their way to bed in the wee hours of the morning. The Tempests confronted and defeated Baroness Lorella Quint at Emeraldpointe after finding that she was the culprit behind the attempted assassinations on Princess Ena Harpermere. The families of the blackmailed chef and the man who had been disintegrated were found locked within the mansion and quickly freed. Just as things were beginning to calm down, a mysterious figure confronted the Tempests and belittled them and their efforts. With a single explosive spell, the figure nearly wiped out the whole group. Kasumi cast her own spell that made the figure see what it feared most, and in doing so, caused the being to flee, but not before announcing his name: Zephyrus. A week-long journey awaited the party and as they traveled back to Harpermere, they read through the Baroness' journal to try and piece together what caused her to commit such heinous acts and what she had to do with Zephyrus. After a brief meeting with the King, and many questions about the encounter being dodged by Zaan, the Tempests turned in for the night within the comfort of their wagon home.. The promise of a wedding and discussion about the promised ship awaited them in the coming days. Princess Ena's assassin had been captured and brought back to the Castle where Godrich, the head of the Blue Cathedral, unpetrified the man. Just like the head chef, he seemed to have been black mailed into doing someone's dirty deed. Before the Tempests were able to get any information out of the man, he was struck in the chest with a Disintegrate spell. A quick search outside proved fruitless as the caster seemed to have vanished without a trace. The only clue remaining was to investigate the tabard the man had been wearing with the symbol of a rat rowing in a dinghy. After a short search, the Tempests found the hideout for the Sea Rats, the Thieves Guild operating within the capitol. Wharfmaster Brim was already there discussing the guild's next steps and how to avoid being the wrongful target of the kingdom's wrath. After some head scratching and thinking in circles, the Tempests decided to question anyone and anything related to Princess Ena, confounded as Brick may be as to why she was the target. Gaining no real ground with their questioning, Kasumi decided to see if Shenshe would reply to her query. Was the Baroness Lorella Quint involved? With a definitive YES, the Tempests now had someone to question. Vanera had a meeting with Otis to discuss the recent lapse in godly reception and Brick's magical issues. Otis was unhelpful in this regard apart from revealing the activation of the Kadali Ruins hovering over the bay occurred roughly at the same time. To Vaneras mild annoyance, Otis' attention was shifted to transport the Tempests to the Aztlan Empire halfway across the world upon a request from Brick to visit his creators, Borgir and Chimali. Within the Legendary Smithing halls of Chichimec, Brick learned through his creators that they had been successful in creating another version of him, but regretted to inform him that his current core would not last under the stress he put on it. Though he wouldn't die, his magic would eventually cease to function. A difficult task lay ahead of the Tempests to gather the required materials in the Tepetl Mountains that would allow Borgir and Chimali to create a newer, more robust power core. Otis then brought the Party back to Harpermere where they acted as bodyguards for the royal family during the arrival of Emperor Decimus of the Romanan Empire. During the dignitaries' arrival, Princess Ena was struck by a large crossbow bolt that pinned her to the docks. A frantic chase later, and Kasumi turned the attacker into a jade statue with her weapon Bah'saito. Welcome to Take Your Time, a podcast by Jonathon Dornbush and Tom Marks where the duo will be playing Persona 5 Royal in real time, playing along with P5R's in-game calendar. Join Tom and Jonathon for episode 39 as we dive into the week of Jan. 3 - Jan. 9 and dig deeper into the brand-new Royal section of the Persona 5 calendar. As our Persona 5 Royal podcast and playthrough continues, Jonathon and Tom dive into some viewer emails and comments about the new Royal section of Persona 5 and our experiences so far, looking ahead to the future of our Persona podcast Take Your Time, and, of course, reference House. But, naturally, we spend the bulk of our Persona 5 Royal recap this week digging into the latest events in Joker's life - namely, his attempts to make the rest of Persona 5's Phantom Thieves try and remember the lives they once led, and if they're actually happy living in this created reality. We discuss those encounters, how they play out, and more before jumping back into P5 Royal's new palace, coming face-to-face with the decision we were left with last week in Persona 5 Royal. We discuss what that choice means here, including a surprising ending for P5R (no spoilers beyond this week, of course), and dig into Joker and Akechi's efforts to save Kasumi. Will the Phantom Thieves reunite? Will there actually be a palace infiltration? Will Morgana get hotter? Find out this week! Plus, our Persona 5 podcast offers another Pop Quiz question, answers listener questions, and a lot more. Be sure to write in with your thoughts to dornology@gmail.com, or tweet at Jonathon (@jmdornbush) and Tom (@tomrmarks).
Welcome to Take Your Time, a podcast by Jonathon Dornbush and Tom Marks where the duo will be playing Persona 5 Royal in real time, playing along with P5R's in-game calendar. Join Tom and Jonathon for episode 39 as we dive into the week of Dec. 27 - Jan. 2 and get into the brand-new Royal section of the Persona 5 calendar. As our Persona 5 Royal podcast and playthrough continues, Jonathon and Tom of course spend an extremely long time recounting the skipped days of the week that Persona 5 doesn't cover. No, of course we quickly get into things, as we begin examining what the Phantom Thieves get up to in Persona 5 Royal around New Year's Eve, discuss their party plans, and begin our journey into 2022 with two quite strange days of Persona 5 Royal. Jonathon break down all the big P5 reveals and story beats of these days, including the introduction of Royal's new palace proper, how Akechi and Kasumi's respective stories play into the new content, and much more. We look into what's going on with Morgana, Futaba, and the rest of the gang as things start to seem off in the new year, and we dig into some of P5 Royal's biggest twists and turns yet, including some major character revelations, long-seeded story ideas, and even an Easter egg Tom layered into this very show! We also start off the show diving into some of your comments about the last couple weeks of Persona 5's calendar, how you felt about P5's boss battles, story reveals, and much more. Plus, our Persona 5 podcast offers another Pop Quiz question, answers listener questions, and a lot more. Welcome to Take Your Time, a podcast by Jonathon Dornbush and Tom Marks where the duo will be playing Persona 5 Royal in real time, playing along with P5R's in-game calendar. Join Tom and Jonathon for episode 26 as we continue the free time of Okumura's Palace in Persona 5 Royal during the week of Sept 27 - Oct 3. We're holding palace discussion for next week, but in the meantime, our Persona 5 Royal playthrough continues with more free time to decide which confidants to hang out with, a surprising in-game mention of this Persona 5 podcast's favorite TV show, House M.D., and much more. But, of course, our discussion is primarily focused on the end of the week's events, in which a major new moment in the Royal-specific plot deepens our understanding of what's to come, provides new insight into Kasumi, and totally catches Jonathon by surprise. We dig into that surprising day and much more as we prep for the palace talk next week. Plus, our Persona 5 podcast offers another Pop Quiz question, and answer some questions about the length of Persona 5 Royal, save states in Persona 5 and JRPGs in general, and a lot more. The duo discusses the events of the week, the endearing character moments, and the ways in which the seemingly innocuous school trip has bigger ramifications for Persona 5 Royal's story. Speaking of, we also discuss some of the Royal specific changes to the week, dive a bit into Kasumi's Confidant line (at the end of the episode), and much more.
