On this edition of Art in Action we hear from Brazilian poet, spoken word artist and performer Rodrigo Brandão. In this interview Rodrigo speaks about the music worlds of São Paulo that have been important to the creative process for projects he had worked on. Also Rodrigo speaks on being based in Lisbon and some recent work. Specifically we hear about collaborations with the Chicago based artist Rob Mazurek who originally introduced me to Rodrigo. Somewhere in our conversation, Rob Mazurek mentions he wants listeners to “levitate” to his music. And, impossibly, I think he can pull it off.  The trumpet player, composer, synth-master, mole maker is also the leader of the Exploding Star Orchestra, a jazzy bunch of rabble rousers who's most recent album, Dimensional Stardust, is as baffling as it is beautiful. It's like looking into an ever tumbling kaleidoscope and the millions of shining particles suddenly spitting out a fully formed Monet. This is music of a joyous revelry and we chatted with Rob about it.

Einen wunderschönen guten Tag! Da sind wir wieder! Diesmal mal wieder in Franken und beim Silvaner, zumindest was den Wein angeht, den wir verkosten einen Silvaner Sulzfelder Alte Reben Ortswein 2022 von Zehnthof Luckert. Außerdem hören wir 'Crux' von Glasser und 'New Future City Radio' von Damon Locks und Rob Mazurek. Und natürlich gibt es am Schluss wieder philosophisches, diesmal reden wir darüber, ob Leistung nicht doch wieder mehr honoriert werden sollte.

Nel maggio scorso Rob Mazurek, figura tra le più significative del panorama jazzistico degli ultimi trent'anni, è stato ospite di Jazz Anthology nell'ambito di una puntata in cui Corrado Beldì ci ha presentato il festival di Novara Jazz di cui è direttore artistico; del festival, che si è poi svolto in giugno, Mazurek è stato protagonista con diversi progetti. In quella puntata di Jazz Anthology, dal nostro auditorium Demetrio Stratos, Mazurek ci aveva regalato un paio di interventi musicali: l'auditorium e la situazione gli sono piaciuti ed è nata così l'idea di una sua "residenza" a Radio Popolare, in collaborazione con Novara jazz, per registrare del nuovo materiale in solo, parte live e parte utilizzando il nostro auditorium come uno studio. La trasmissione di questa sera è la prima tappa dei tre giorni di residenza: 55 intensi minuti di solo in diretta, senza interruzioni, impiegando tromba, piccolo trumpet, pianoforte, flauto di canna, percussioni, oggetti, elettronica, voce.

On today's episode, I talk to musician and composer Rob Mazurek. Originally from Jersey City, Rob started playing trumpet and cornet in high school after his family moved to Naperville, Illinois. He first learned the foundations of improvised music while studying jazz theory and practice with David Bloom at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, and then became a mainstay of Chicago jazz in the 1980s. In 1994, Rob formed the Chicago Underground Collective with guitarist Jeff Parker and a cast of revolving players, which in turn birthed Isotope 217, both groups releasing albums on the seminal label Thrill Jockey. In the decades since then, Rob founded the Exploding Star Orchestra, has earned numerous commissions and awards, and in general has created more music and art than a short bio can properly elucidate. Earlier this spring, Rob's most recent work for Exploding Star Orchestra, Lightning Dreamers, was released on International Anthem, and like everything else Rob creates, it's wonderful! Bob Koester, scomparso qualche mese fa a 89 anni, è stato il fondatore della Delmark Records, una delle più significative etichette discografiche americane.La triste circostanza ci dà lo spunto per ricordare, grazie alla sapiente guida di Riccardo Bertoncelli, la storia di questa label nata nel 1953 con base prima a St. Louis poi a Chicago, che ha documentato soprattutto - ma non solo - la frizzante scena del blues urbano e del jazz d'avanguardia della Windy City.Nel suo sterminato catalogo appaiono – tra i tanti – i nomi di Sleepy John Estes, Big Joe Williams, Arthur Crudup, Otis Rush, Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, Magic Sam. Più avanti quelli di Byther Smith, Michael Coleman, Little Arthur Duncan, Eddie C. Campbell.In ambito jazz hanno registrato per la label Donald Byrd, Bud Powell, Barney Bigard, Sonny Stitt, Ira Sullivan nonché moltissimi esponenti del jazz più avanzato quali Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Braxton e in tempi più recenti Ken Vandermark, Rob Mazurek, Nicole Mitchell , l'Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.

Quin Kirchner has spent his life growing into where he's arrived currently, which is to say a world-class jazz drummer, composer and now bandleader with The Quin Kirchner Trio, but has been playing with top-flight players and leading groups large and small for the better part of 20 years like Head With Wings, K/V/L and later NOMO, a giant ensemble of largely improvised material which later begat Wild Belle. He's spent his life as side man to great players like Rob Mazurek, Jeb Bishop and Nick Mazzarella but hadn't come into his own until the QKT released The Other Side of Time in 2018 and now The Shadows and The Light and getting crazy reviews not only in Downbeat but also on indie mags Pitchfork, spreading the love naturally.

Esta semana, en una nueva entrega de Rebelión Sónica, los invitamos a escuchar dos discos que se relacionan por la figura del importante compositor, vientista, improvisador y figura señera del jazz actual, Rob Mazurek. En primer lugar, destacamos “Dimensional Stardust”, séptimo álbum del ensamble liderado por el cornetista estadounidense, Exploding Star Orchestra (ESO), que fue editado el 20 de noviembre de 2020, en conjunto por los sellos International Anthem y Nonesuch Records. “Dimensional Stardust” tiene sus orígenes en 2018, cuando la curadora del JazzFest de Berlín, Nadin Deventer, invitó a Mazurek a presentar una nueva versión de ESO al festival, con músicos tanto de la ciudad alemana y de Chicago, lugar de base del vientista. Cuando Mazurek retornó a Chicago en el verano de 2019, International Anthem aprovechó la oportunidad para capturar las nuevas composiciones con un elenco de colaboradores de su constelación colectiva de artistas. En un puñado de fechas de estudio entre agosto de 2019 y marzo de 2020, Mazurek canalizó sus arreglos con 11 músicos y le encargó a su colaborador lírico Damon Locks que redactara textos originales para cada uno de los títulos y grabara las pistas vocales. Después de tres meses de riguroso trabajo de postproducción, edición y montaje, en junio de 2020 Mazurek completó su nueva colección de grabaciones de ESO, bautizándolas “Dimensional Stardust”. De acuerdo a la información entregada, el nuevo disco “muestra la complejidad de las composiciones de Mazurek, pero en sus formas más potentes y compactas”. En segundo lugar, escucharemos “Instant Opaque Evening”, el segundo disco del súper trío de improvisación The Underflow, integrado por Mazurek, el saxofonista sueco Mats Gustafsson y el guitarrista y cantante estadounidense, David Grubbs. (Lean una entrevista reciente con este último, en el siguiente enlace) Editado el 29 de enero de 2021 por el sello Blue Chopsticks, subsidiario de Drag City, el álbum incluye cerca de 90 minutos de música “intensamente enfocada”, que fue registrada en vivo en shows hechos por el trío en enero de 2020 en Francia, Bélgica, Italia y Polonia. De acuerdo a la información entegada por Grubbs, “aquella gira fue una revelación para los tres experimentados miembros, quienes todavía con la libertad de un nuevo grupo, salían al escenario cada noche, decididos a sorprenderse recíprocamente (…)”. La declaración agrega, refiriéndose a algunos tracks del álbum, “que “Instant Opaque Evening” es un amplio barrido musical, que va desde la electrónica de ‘Self-Portrait as Interference Pattern’ y el clímax de ‘Instant Opaque Evening’ de diecisiete minutos, pasando por la inspirada música de cámara del universo alternativo de ‘Planks’ y ‘A Thin Eternity’, hasta los arreglos espontáneos del grupo de tres canciones previamente grabadas por Grubbs: ‘Gethsemani Night’, ‘An Optimist Declines’ y ‘Cooler Side of the Pillow’”. Dalla metà degli anni ottanta anima di "Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz", l'11 novembre scorso è mancato improvvisamente a Sant'Anna Arresi Basilio Sulis, che per chi ha frequentato il festival di Sant'Anna Arresi, così come per centinaia di musicisti fra i più importanti a livello internazionale che al festival hanno suonato, e che in generale non conoscevano nemmeno il suo cognome, era, semplicemente, Basilio. Con il suo temperamento, con la sua personalità speciale, Basilio con una determinazione non comune, in cui certo c'era moltissimo di sardo, è stato capace di portare avanti per trentacinque anni andando contro venti e maree il festival che aveva fatto nascere "in un angolo di periferia dell'impero", come gli piaceva dire. Votato al jazz più avanzato e audace, grazie a Basilio che lo ha guidato, "Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz" può vantare una tradizione, una identità e una indipendenza di scelte più uniche che rare. Rendiamo omaggio a Basilio Sulis con alcuni degli album che sono stati ricavati da concerti di protagonisti di primo piano del jazz d'avanguardia che il festival di Sant'Anna Arresi ha proposto nell'ultimo ventennio: Matthew Shipp, David S. Una carrellata di novità dall'etichetta di Chicago. Dopo il fortunato album dedicato al repertorio di Gil Scott Heron, Makaya McCraven dà un seguito al suo precedente album Universal Beings con Universal Beings E & F Sides. Chicago Waves, l'album dei due musicisti californiani Carlos Nino e Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, dà l'idea dell'apertura di interessi dell'etichetta. Aquiles Navarro e Tcheser Holmes, di cui esce Heritage of the Invisible, secondo capitolo del loro album del 2014 dallo stesso titolo, fanno parte del collettivo Irreversible Entanglement, una formazione che ha attirato molto l'attenzione recentemente. En primer lugar, destacamos el álbum 2020 de Chicago Underground Quartet, el primero que edita esta alineación del ensamble en 19 años, pues es el sucesor del disco homónimo de 2001. Titulado “Good Days”, el disco fue lanzado por el sello Astral Spirits el pasado 27 de marzo y trae a la banda de regreso con el siguiente personal: Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra) en trompeta piccolo, electrónicos y campanas, Chad Taylor en batería y percusión, Jeff Parker (Tortoise) en guitarra eléctrica y, como nuevo integrante, al joven músico afroamericano Josh Johnson en bajo sintetizado, órgano y piano. En la parte final del programa, viajamos algunos años al pasado en la historia este colectivo variable, para escucharlos como Chicago Underground Duo, específicamente con material de su disco “Locus”, publicado en 2014 por el sello Northern-Spy.

Like The New Breed, the new LP blends deep, Dilla-Inspired grooves, clipped R&B samples, and Parker’s beautiful guitar—often languid, occasionally frenzied, but always powerfully soulful.  The record is yet another winner from Chicago’s International Anthem, which has established itself as one of the key labels in underground jazz, and it’s released in collaboration with the legendary Nonesuch imprint. She’s made a number of excellent albums as a leader and as a solo artist, and is also a member of groups like Paradoxical Frog with Ingrid Laubrock and Tyshawn Sorey, and Anti-House with Laubrock, Mary Halvorson, John Hébert and Tom Rainey. I saw that group perform at the Vision Festival at Roulette in Brooklyn back in 2012, and they’ve got three albums which are all worth your time. She also recently joined a group formed by cornet player Rob Mazurek, with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Chad Taylor, for his Desert Encrypts festival in Marfa, Texas, and they’ve released a live recording, Desert Encrypts Vol. 1. In this conversation, we talk about Kris Davis’s music, her label Pyroclastic, which is where her new album Diatom Ribbons is coming out and also where Chris Lightcap, who was on the last podcast, is releasing his Superbigmouth album, both next week. Mitchell is originally from Syracuse, New York, but she grew up in California and eventually went to college in the Midwest, where she became an important figure on the Chicago jazz scene. In fact, she eventually became the first female president of the AACM there. Her primary group is called the Black Earth Ensemble, which has a fluctuating membership but Tomeka Reid is one of the core members – Tomeka was featured on episode 7 of this podcast, back in January, and spoke about working with Nicole and how important it was to her development as an artist, so we’re getting the other side of the story in this episode. In addition to the Black Earth Ensemble, Mitchell has led a lot of one-off groups, and been a part of other people’s projects – she’s in some of Anthony Braxton’s large ensembles, she’s been part of several of Rob Mazurek’s groups including the Exploding Star Orchestra and its offshoot projects, she’s in the Indigo Trio with Harrison Bankhead and Hamid Drake. But she’s really made a tremendous impact as a leader, creating music that covers a broad spectrum from jazz to modern composition to theatrical pieces and multimedia presentations, collaborating with and paying tribute to writers – as you’ll hear in this conversation, texts are hugely important to her, even when the music itself is instrumental. Last year, her album Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds got a tremendous amount of critical acclaim – it combines violin, cello, guitar and percussion with traditional Japanese instruments to create a sound that’s both ancient and modern at once, and really is unlike anything else I’ve ever heard. We don't agree about everything, and you'll hear some interesting back-and-forth in this conversation about a variety of issues, from the audience for hardcore improvised music to how young artists should navigate the industry. Abrimos programa con la voz de Mahalia Jackson y su colaboracion en la suite "Black, brown and beige" que grabó Duke Ellington en 1958. "desde mi cadiera" con Jesús Moreno da muestra del nuevo trabajo del trompetista Rob Mazurek: las "Skull Sessions" de su octeto con músicos brasileños y de la escena de Chicago. En "La duda permanente", Ferran Esteve presenta la doble edición discográfica del Free Art Ensemble ideado por el baterista Ívo Sans y con la colaboración de Agustí Fernández. El "Tren Azul" de Luis Díaz García indaga en grabaciones de los años 20 y nos da muestra de las bandas de Red Nichols y Charles Dornberger, además de la música de The Original Memphis Five.
