Today, The Tonearm's needle drops on cellist and composer Tomeka Reid.Tomeka Reid has spent the last decade building one of the most distinctive voices in creative music. The New York Times called her a "New Jazz Power Source." She's a MacArthur Fellow, a founder of the Chicago Jazz String Summit, and a key collaborator with Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, and Craig Taborn, among many others. Her quartet with guitarist Mary Halvorson, bassist Jason Roebke, and drummer Tomas Fujiwara just released dance! skip! hop! on Out of Your Head Records. It's their fourth album together, and it shows what twelve years of shared language sounds like: tight, playful, and willing to take chances. She also appears on Dream Archives, Craig Taborn's ECM debut with this instrumentation, recorded in New Haven, Connecticut and out earlier this year.We talked about the cello's role in jazz, how family history shapes her work, and what it means to lead a band that's been together long enough to surprise itself.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from The Tomeka Reid Quartet's album dance! skip! hop!)—Dig DeeperArtist and AlbumVisit Tomeka Reid at tomekareid.com and follow her on Instagram and FacebookPurchase The Tomeka Reid Quartet's dance! skip! hop! from Out Of Your Head Records, Bandcamp, or Qobuz, and listen on your streaming platform of choiceOut Of Your Head Records — Tomeka's label for dance! skip! hop!Tomeka Reid — MacArthur Foundation Fellow (2022)Quartet MembersJason Roebke — bass, cassetteMary Halvorson — guitarTomas Fujiwara — drumsRelated Albums and Projects3+3 — Tomeka Reid Quartet (Cuneiform, 2024) — the quartet's previous albumDream Archives — Craig Taborn, Tomeka Reid, Ches Smith (ECM, 2026) — Tomeka's ECM debutHear in Now — co-led trio with Mazz Swift and Silvia BolognesiOrganizations and FestivalsAssociation for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) — the Chicago collective central to Tomeka's artistic developmentChicago Jazz String Summit — Tomeka's annual festival, founded 2013, dedicated to improvising string playersMusical References and InfluencesAbdul Wadud — jazz cellist and major influence on Tomeka's approach to the instrumentStuff Smith — pioneering jazz violinist; referenced in discussion of CJSS repertoireGinger Smock — jazz violinist mentioned in the context of overlooked string player composersDiedre Murray — jazz cellist and composer; referenced alongside Stuff SmithHistorical ReferencesRock Springs massacre (1885) — the violent attack on Chinese miners in Rock Springs, Wyoming, which Tomeka mentions in the context of her grandmother's family history in the regionFred Anderson — Chicago jazz saxophonist and founder of the Velvet Lounge, where Tomeka met mentor Clarence JamesThe Velvet Lounge, Chicago — legendary South Side jazz venue where Tomeka came up (verify whether Wikipedia article exists under this exact title)—Dig into this episode's complete show notes at podcast.thetonearm.com—• Did you enjoy this episode?

Amina Claudine Myers was one of the earliest members of the AACM, and if you're listening to this podcast, I'm pretty sure you know what the AACM is, but just in case you don't, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians is an organization formed by Muhal Richard Abrams, Roscoe Mitchell and a few other musicians in Chicago in the mid-1960s. A tremendous number of the most important avant-garde jazz musicians of the mid to late 20th century and the 21st century have come out of the AACM, including Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill, Fred Anderson, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Wadada Leo Smith, Matana Roberts, Nicole Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, and Amina Claudine Myers. There's a tremendous book by trombonist and composer George Lewis, called A Power Stronger Than Itself, that's the best possible introduction to the group. You should absolutely read that if you're a fan of any of the musicians I just named. Now, all the founders and early members of the AACM worked together, supporting each other, and moving the music forward in large part by composing and performing original work. What's interesting — and this is something we talk about in this conversation — is that Amina Claudine Myers' early albums included some original music, but they also included interpretations of other people's compositions, specifically Marion Brown and Bessie Smith. But she always paired that music up with pieces of her own that demonstrated a really fascinating compositional voice that was a combination of jazz, gospel, blues, and classical music. She took all her influences and early training and combined them into something that sounded like nobody else out there, and was incredibly powerful. In addition to making her own records, she's been a part of albums by Lester Bowie, Henry Threadgill, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, Bill Laswell, and many other people. Her latest release is a collection of duos with Wadada Leo Smith, the first time they've recorded together since 1969, and their first collaboration as leaders.I'm really glad I had the chance to interview her. We talked about a lot of things — the AACM, the role of spirituality in music and the way the term spiritual jazz is used to gatekeep certain things, her work with all the artists I just mentioned, her upbringing in Arkansas and Texas and how it influenced her writing... this is a really wide-ranging conversation that I think will be really interesting for you to hear. I thank you as always for listening.

Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of Man If He Was an Idea is a 3-D documentary film about the life and work of artist and marine H.C. (“Cliff”) Westermann. As a veteran of World War II and the Korean War who struggled with the ramifications of modern warfare, Westermann's dramatic personal history can be traced through his beguiling, surreal artworks. Westermann: Memorial to the Idea of a Man If He Was an Idea explores the themes of Westermann's life and work, including resiliency, hope, and humor. Westermann used art as a means of processing the trauma of war, and in spite of these horrors, he adopted an empathic and hopeful spirit that courses through his artwork and relationships, becoming an inspiration to many young artists. The film features featuring interviews with Ed Ruscha, Frank Gehry, William T. Wiley, Billy Al Bengston, and other artist-pals. The film is executive produced by the internationally acclaimed artist, KAWS, along with award-winning documentary producer Caryn Capotosto. Westermann features music by legendary artists Laurie Anderson (with the Kronos Quartet) and Terry Allen. MacArthur “Genius Grant” winner Tomeka Reid composed the original score. Director Leslie Buchbinder joins us for a conversation on enlisting Academy Award nominated actor Ed Harris to voice the writings of Westermann, the enduring influence that H.C. Westerman had on his chosen pursuit of sculptor as well as his philosophical approach to art and work ethic that continues impact other accomplished artists. Tomas Fujiwara is a Brooklyn-based drummer and composer. Described as “a ubiquitous presence in the New York scene…an artist whose urbane writing is equal to his impressively nuanced drumming” (Troy Collins, Point of Departure), Tomas is an active player in some of the most exciting music of the current generation, with his bands Triple Double (with Gerald Cleaver, Mary Halvorson, Brandon Seabrook, Ralph Alessi, and Taylor Ho Bynum), Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up (with Jonathan Finlayson, Brian Settles, Halvorson, and Michael Formanek) and The Tomas Fujiwara Trio (with Alessi and Seabrook); his collaborative duo with cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum; the collective trio Thumbscrew (with Halvorson and Formanek); and a diversity of creative sideman work with forward thinking peers like Tomeka Reid and Matana Roberts. In The New York Times, Nate Chinen writes, “Drummer Tomas Fujiwara works with rhythm as a pliable substance, solid but ever shifting. His style is forward-driving but rarely blunt or aggressive, and never random. He has a way of spreading out the center of a pulse while setting up a rigorous scaffolding of restraint...A conception of the drum set as a full-canvas instrument, almost orchestral in its scope.” Support the show

Episode SummaryExperimental musician Mary Halvorson shares her story of how a practical person made the impractical leap to pursue a music career when she met a truly inspiring teacher in college. Mary discusses creating music that is out of the mainstream, finding acceptance by going her own way, and how receiving the prestigious MacArthur Grant has impacted her life. Syd and Mary talk leadership, women in music, quarantine, and more, in this episode of The Sydcast.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Finkelstein has published 25 books and 90 articles, including the bestsellers Why Smart Executives Fail and Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, which LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman calls the “leadership guide for the Networked Age.” He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management, a consultant and speaker to leading companies around the world, and a top 25 on the global Thinkers 50 list of top management gurus. Professor Finkelstein's research and consulting work often relies on in-depth and personal interviews with hundreds of people, an experience that led him to create and host his own podcast, The Sydcast, to uncover and share the stories of all sorts of fascinating people in business, sports, entertainment, politics, academia, and everyday life. Mary HalvorsonGuitarist and composer Mary Halvorson has been described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC's least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today's most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). In recent Downbeat Critics Polls, Halvorson has been celebrated as a guitarist, rising star jazz artist, and rising star composer of the year, and in 2019 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.Halvorson has released a series of critically acclaimed albums on the Firehouse 12 label, from Dragon's Head (2008), her trio debut featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith, expanding to a quintet with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson and alto saxophonist Jon Irabagon on Saturn Sings (2010) and Bending Bridges (2012), a septet with tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and trombonist Jacob Garchik on Illusionary Sea (2014), and finally an octet with pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn on Away With You (2016). She also released the solo recording Meltframe (2015) and most recently debuted Code Girl (2018), a new ensemble featuring vocalist Amirtha Kidambi (singing Halvorson's own lyrics), trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, saxophonist/ vocalist Maria Grand, bassist Michael Formanek, and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. One of New York City's most in-demand guitarists, over the past decade Halvorson has worked with such diverse musicians as Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, John Dieterich, Trevor Dunn, Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock, Jason Moran, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Jessica Pavone, Tomeka Reid, Marc Ribot, and John Zorn. She is also part of several collaborative projects, most notably the longstanding trio Thumbscrew with Michael Formanek on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums.Insights from this episode:The benefits of studying musical traditions to build your own strong musical foundation.Reasons why you should play different types and styles of music to enhance and further your career.Differences between listening to music through a streaming service versus on a CD or vinyl album and the impact of listening to only one song versus an entire album. How to find a balance between instinct and editing when creating music.Benefits of performing music live that can not be achieved through streaming concerts. How to be a good bandleader and how to deal with the pressure that comes with being a leader in any situation.Quotes from the show:“I realized music was much more than I had initially thought, it was much bigger. There were so many more possibilities.” – Mary Halvorson“I think there's a misconception that people who play experimental music only like experimental music or can't play other types of music and vice versa. I've found that that's often not the case.” – Mary Halvorson“I think of an academic career as an entrepreneurial career where you can always try something new if you want to try something new.” – Syd Finkelstein“We know, in so many walks of life, narrative flow and storytelling is everything.” – Syd Finkelstein“I've always found it un-intuitive to have music and then put lyrics in later.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm just writing music that I find exciting or that I think is beautiful or that I like and I think that tends to be a little bit left of center.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm very lucky to do music that I believe in.” – Mary Halvorson“What I've realized during this [quarantine] period is there's no substitute for live music. Doing live-stream performances is not a substitute for live music.” – Mary HalvorsonOn what advice Mary would give to her younger self: “Take your time with things and make sure to do things thoroughly … get really deep into something.” – Mary Halvorson“I think focusing on the process and not the end result is also a good thing to think about.” – Mary HalvorsonStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The SydcastMary HalvorsonWebsite: www.maryhalvorson.comSpotify: Mary HalvorsonYouTube Music: Mary HalvorsonFacebook: Mary HalvorsonSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. This episode was produced and managed by Podcast Laundry (www.podcastlaundry.com)
