What if we could have a whole day set aside just to say "thank you" to all who have helped us through this long COVID few years. Well, it's on the way! June 5th and Lisa Hunter is going to tell us all about it and her Rotary story.
Welcome to Embers and Wind!In describing their volunteer work at Robert's Wish, guest Lisa Hunter states “We're there. We listen. We let them talk, express what they're feeling, express their frustrations, their fears. We listen to what they're saying. They feel heard. They feel like they've got someone to turn to. But more importantly, they feel like they are not alone. And that's the biggest, biggest message that we can give to anyone who is struggling is that you are not alone and that's exactly what we do. Based on what the person says, we actually then from there point them in the right direction of resource…. We'll then connect them with an organization that can help them even more.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. It will be your choice to utilize the gentle wind to ignite the kindling. In this episode, we talk about Lisa's first encounter with bullying in high school in South Africa. She was bullied because she was different, having grown up in a different geographic area in South Africa. She talks about a different type of bullying she experienced in the workplace where she felt pressured to help management build a termination case. She shares that her personal experiences being bullied helped her develop her sensory acuity for the needs of others. She how her friend Robert taking his own life led her to become an advocate and start Robert's Wish, a place where people who have been bullied or their parents can find a caring person who will listen, affirm them and refer them to resources to help resolve bullying. She shares two stories of people who have been helped by Robert's Wish, a teenage boy who was bullied in school and the parents of a teenage daughter who was bullied. Both were bullied for their sexual identity. She notes that Robert's Wish will help with any type of bullying at any stage of life. She talks about her faith. She believes God wants people to accept and love others unconditionally. While she has experienced some push back from a minority of Christians, most are supportive of the work of Robert's Wish. In today's episode about bullying, I talk to Lisa Hunter who was born and raised in South Africa and moved to the UK in 2001. Lisa struggled with bullying herself from the age of 16 at a new school. It was the support of her family and a very special biology teacher, which helped her cope with some of the darkest of times when she contemplated taking her own life. She then went on to experience bullying again as an adult in the workplace. Robert was a very close friend of Lisa's in Johannesburg who died of suicide after coming out as a gay man to his parents but was rejected and bullied by the whole community. Robert was unable to find support at the time and Lisa founded Robert's Wish in 2015 so that no-one else need go through the loneliness that Robert felt. She works extensively supporting the LGBTQ community, youth and parents navigate their way through various challenges related to bullying and strives to make a difference where possible.WARNING: Suicide is discussed in this episodePoints discussed in this episode:How Lisa begun to be bullied at the age of 16 when she moved from Johannesburg to a new school in the UK and then in the workplace as an adult (1:20)What helped Lisa cope at school (4:46)Getting an apology years later (7:52)What thought stopped Lisa from taking her own life, when she felt all hope was lost (8:26)Cyber bullying (9:28)The power of listening (10:30)Simple ways you can feel less alone and vulnerable (12:45)The reason behind founding Robert's Wish (17:37)Why bullies bully (21:45)Connect with Lisa:https://robertswish.comhttps://www.instagram.com/robertswishapp/https://www.facebook.com/RobertsWishApp/Let's connect!FacebookInstagramTwitterLinkedInWebsite Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Seen and Heard. I’m Lisa Hunter, founder of anti-bullying organization Robert’s Wish. I invite you to take part in an open and honest discussion about all aspects of bullying, the impact and possible solutions. Robert’s Wish is a community organisation named after my dear friend. We are a community driven organisation based in the UK, a safe, confidential and non-judgemental platform of discussion, debate and support to all those who are or have experienced bullying. We cover topics from youth bullying, bullying in the workplace to LGBT bullying and the impact on mental health and other aspects of life in general.Robert himself struggled deeply from a lack of support from friends and family, a feeling that there was no community to turn to, and the idea that there was no one who could understand his struggle and ease his isolation and loneliness. Unfortunately, his story is not unique. Through our community and this podcast, my hope is for no one to ever experience those feelings ever again.Today, tune in and learn a bit more about my friend Robert and his hope that no-one would have to experience the same loneliness and isolation. We’ll talk a bit about some ideas to start advocating for those struggling, as well as some excellent resources that can also help.
