Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest and digital marketing strategist Mileh Oztalay shares “Marketing is essentially a problem-solving discipline. It's not about just throwing ads out there. It's about understanding when you find a starting point, and you analyze that starting point, what do you do to make the program better, the campaign, the marketing efforts whatever they may be, could be public relations, for example. All these different elements, these are all problem-solving components. As you work through this problem-solving process, really, marketing, in itself, is a process. When you work through the marketing process, you gain a story. The idea is how do you take this story, how do you take this knowledge and how you share it. The best way to share it is just make it simple. Talk about it in a way that people are going to understand. Talk about it in a way that people are going to accept.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. My response in most cases is very similar ‘You can fret and fume, fuss, moan and groan about that change. If you don't accept it and move forward, your competition is going to get ahead of you by a factor of 3 to 5 times. Should you decide to re-engage after you get done fretting, fussing, and fuming, you're going to be investing an enormous amount of money just to get caught up.'” To stay connected with Mileh, his company's website is the website listed for this episode. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Mark Walton describes his passion for Toastmasters “It's something I love to do. That's why I've gone from visiting one time a week to 4. The other thing that keeps me fascinated by Toastmasters is how effective we are in taking people who are perfectly wooden, terrified and turning them into superb public speakers. That I've been a Toastmaster for ten years. Ten years a member of 4 clubs. I've got a lot of Toastmasters experience, and yet over and over again I've seen members join Toastmasters and in 2 years, they're much better public speakers than I am. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Health concierge coach Leslie Urbas shares “The four main pillars of what I teach right now include the nutrition from the aspect of the secret energy of food and the aspects of what I call detoxing your kitchen. Another piece of what I teach is energy mastery work which is really your energetic piece of yourself and how that's yielding things. Another piece is the neuroscience aspect. People don't really think about it but you're living out what you were taught from the perspective of food and nutrition. So, if your mom chronically dieted, and you always saw her trying one thing after the other never fully satisfied with her body, you're potentially embodying that. Or, if you're taught that you eat a certain food, you're going to look like Aunt So-and-so, you might become Aunt So-and-so just because of how you were taught, things on that aspect. He was playing tennis with his adult daughter in 2021. He noticed while playing tennis that there was a young African American male. He was on the basketball court near the tennis court, and he was on rollerblades. He was really good on rollerblades. My friend, he noticed how good this young man was. He was impressed. This young man was able to do things that most people could not do on rollerblades. After playing tennis, he called the young man over. The young man was a little hesitant. He wasn't quite sure what Eric wanted. Eric told him just how impressed he was by how good he was on rollerblades. After first looking down, looked up at Eric and said, ‘Do you really think so?' This was not what the young man expected to hear from Eric because they were of different races. Eric was Caucasian. This was why the young man was quite tentative in approaching Eric. Hearing sincere, positive feedback from this benevolent stranger was totally unexpected. Eric said ‘Yes.' I want you to imagine for a moment the young man's face after Eric said this. All these platform devices are very addictive. Part of the side, we also study how to get users to love to use your apps. We know it's very addictive, especially not super for children. So, I think for my first one, she didn't get to use the iPad, the smart phone, headsets in the very early age. She's seven, eight years old, she was always complaining: “Augh, my friend got it. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Natalia Nutting shares how you can tell a story to elevate employee engagement: “We love feeling engaged because we feel that we are growing. If you overload people with instructions, they don't feel engaged because you already told them everything that they have to do, and they have no space for their own growth, for them to figure things out. When it comes to storytelling, if the leader is able to inspire the worker with a little story, then the employee is going to feel like ‘Wow! That is interesting. I actually, I would love to do that.' You're not telling them what to do. You're inspiring them with a story.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this bi-weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. It will be your choice to utilize the gentle wind to ignite the kindling. In this episode, Natalia shares her unstoppable story about the teacher who became Natalia's obstacle and how Natalia utilized this teacher as a challenge to prove that there is a different, engaging way to teach, through storytelling. She tells how as a school storyteller, her students taught her to be vulnerable and see the child in every adult, that children just go for it and learn quickly, and that adults really want to do this too. Natalia shares that she learned to move her body through acting without words which helped her overcome her 4th grade encounter with a teacher. She connects what she learned with what she's learned from Tony Robbins about state, story, strategy. Natalia asserts that storytelling is essential to effective leadership. She shares her passion to help coaches, keynote speakers to become unstoppable storytellers to inspire their audience and grow their business through her signature event, Captivate, that she launches once every 3 months. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Jenny Maxwell shares why active listening is essential to leading your team at home and at work “Everybody's basic needs are love, safety, and belonging, every human's basic needs. We also want to feel seen and heard. When you're in the habit of telling somebody what to do, that person is feeling invisible which is what I felt for a long time when I didn't know how to use my voice and speak up and communicate calmly what my needs were and ask for help, even around the house. Using your voice and being given space to share what's really going on with you, it requires the person on the other side of the table to sit and listen and give you that space. Not interrupt, not interject, not try and tell you what to do, just listen. That's a very powerful tool to have and lots of people don't have it. I notice, well I think actually on my coaching journey, like in the beginning. Because you know when you become a coach, you're really your very first client because you're applying everything, you're learning to yourself. And what I realized was that most people in my circle had no idea what was going on with me because they didn't ask.”In this episode, personal development coach Jenny Maxwell talks about moving from Ireland with her husband and two sons. She shares about longing for Ireland and hoping their family's stay in the U.S. would be temporary. She talks about her frustration when she used to be a people-pleaser, giving people solutions to their problems when they had not asked for her help solving them. She notes how volunteering for the local juvenile justice center empowered her to get out of her slump and become a personal development coach. She stresses the importance of active listening and how that describes her coaching work and at home with her children. She notes mindset and mindfulness can help you lead your team. She shares why she recommends leaders practice active listening at work to empower their team. She shares an inspiring story about a non-for-profit executive and how she helped stop micromanaging her team. She provides stimulating responses to questions posed including the differences between a leader exercising the power of their position versus exercising influence. She describes how she empowers her coaching clients blending active listening with probing questions. She shares tips to help leaders to lead their team at home and at work and a story about a client to inspire you.To stay connected with Jenny, she invites you to connect with her on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram Her LinkedIn profile web address is: https://bit.ly/3soC0dy. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Samantha Sanders shares a few of her steps toward finding the right fit in tech “Well, my dad was in DevOps, so I've been surrounded by tech pretty much all of my life. We always had the latest technology and just naturally kept up to date. But really, I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I grew up and spent a lot of time in the retail industry, job hopping a lot, especially as a military spouse, moving all the time. And then I got into project management and really kind of fell in love with all the processes and such. But it wasn't all that flexible as much as I had needed. So, I had pivoted to recruiting and I knew that tech was the future. And being surrounded by it my entire life, I could obviously see that and see it growing in front of me as I aged. And so I learned how to speak tech. I even took a Python programming language course, data analytics course, and just kind of fell in love with it. But that aspect wasn't really for me, so I decided to do recruiting for it instead.”In this episode, Samantha shares why Missionbox Solutions is the right fit in tech. Welcome to Embers and Wind! While guest Sarah Dawkins' new course is still being developed, she was asked to share a story about someone who experienced healing from participating in her first edition “So, one of my friends bought this course, and she's still working through it. It opened her eyes to things she has to do as a part of her healing process. Like just simple gratitude, expressing gratitude for what we've got in life now, helps us to look for more positive things, and it helps to reprogram our mind from looking at more negative things because we need the positives to write down three things every day that you have gratitude for. And it's always about the little things. So, even if it's a good cup of coffee or a chat with a friend or a walk in the sunshine, just little things to write down. And she didn't realize that gratitude would be powerful, a healing process, because most people think of the 50-core when they think of healing; so, eat more green vegetables, do more exercise, and hydrate better. But we need to look at the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of healing, as well, and dig into those because those are what pull it all together.”In this episode, Sarah talks about her journey from being a registered nurse for 20 years to becoming a holistic health coach. She shares becoming suicidal from clinical depression. She notes prescription drugs she was previously prescribed treated the symptoms without addressing the underlying thoughts and emotions. She notes taking her dogs for walks outside, breathing fresh air, got her back in touch with nature and helped her begin her healing journey, feeling grateful for being alive. She mentions the multitude of health problems she has healed from and how healing herself ignited her passion to help others heal the source of their health problems. She notes how her training as a holistic health coach helped her heal from emotional scars from being sexually molested as a child. While she notes her strengths from her experience as a registered nurse include her knowledge of disease and human anatomy, she stresses the importance of a holistic approach, including how past experiences influence beliefs and the emotions people experience presently including those do not see the connection. She talks about her book, Heal Yourself, a compilation of stories written by people who have healed themselves from various diseases and published in multiple languages. She stresses every reader will learn how the authors healed themselves to enable others to follow their footsteps. She shares one of the many inspiring stories written by guest authors that are included in her book; this guest healed herself from Stage 3 cervical cancer. To stay connected with Sarah, she recommends going to her company's website, the website listed for this episode. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Tara Gooch shares “The medium sized businesses, well it's kind of like being, it's kind of like being in a sense middle class. Right? You have a high class of people that, you know, maybe in that 1% bracket, and then you have medium, you know, income people and then you have lower income level people. And we can all agree, in this economy, it is kind of dangerous to be middle class. A lot of times, they didn't realize how important it (branding) was whereas larger companies did and already had branding and all of these services kind of baked in, and medium sized businesses didn't. And they were struggling, and they didn't know why. And a big part of that is because they lacked presence on social media platforms. And then, watching that business group whose, you know, leaders in that organization, go from not having a business, a really just kind of throwing up spaghetti at the wall approach to social media to having, you know, well developed presence, good personal branding on LinkedIn took their business off and skyrocketed it.”In this episode, Tara talks about how her education prepared her to focus on helping executives and entrepreneurs build personal brands on Linked by building her confidence and leverage. She shares that she was the first person in her family to earn a college degree. She laughs in confiding that her bachelor's degree is in environmental biology. She notes, since graduating, she obtained management certification, then in corporate financial management and then an MBA in business analytics. She shares after launching Best Branding Solutions and experiencing significant business growth on LinkedIn noticing that executives in medium-sized companies lacked having a presence on LinkedIn. She describes a LinkedIn profile as being a billboard for personal brands and posts as a means to reinforce your personal brand including who you are and what you do and build relationships. Tara asserts this is a means to retain employees and stimulate interest among prospective customers, potential employees and other stakeholders. She talks about videos as a free means to build relationships. She notes executives and entrepreneurs who are ineffective on camera will build their skill through practicing. She shares inspiring storis about executives, small business owners and entrepreneurs whom she has helped grow their companies' business by building their personal brand on LinkedIn. She recommends posting daily and identifies an executive who can be viewed as a role model to follow. Welcome to Embers and Wind!In sharing the meditation guest Tal Singh practices and teaches, he reveals his faith in both Sikhism and Christianity: “The meditation technique that they teach is called saas giraas which places the emphasis on the breath, the breathwork. What the gurus taught us, what Guru Nanak taught us, was that we should meditate with every breath. We should be meditating and so that's the kind of principle behind it. So, the way I teach is actually quite secular approach. So, it's a spiritual approach rather than being specific to one religion. And actually, believe it or not, I actually follow two religions. I also follow Christianity. I go to the church every Sunday. I am actually baptized as a Christian also by the Church of England, here in the U.K. But I also every Sunday in the morning I go to church and then after church I go to the Sikh Temple or the Gurudwara or the Gurdwara.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Cindy Allen-Stuckey is nudging you to make small, positive shifts in your life when she compares your shift with a 2 degree shift: “So, I want you to think of an ocean liner, and they need to make change just 2 degrees. So, they need to shift 2 degrees. To begin with, that's a very tiny movement. So, I want to think about shift being action. It's a movement. But the further along that they go with that 2-degree shift, it's a big movement away from where they were going. My definition of shift is conscious movement away from disappointing aspects of your life. So, you can walk them through life enhancing experiences and feelings that really do serve your highest being.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. Cindy states that she has now led two groups of women and that six of them are interested in being licensed as trainers. She states that she is establishing a licensing process for people interested in becoming licensed trainers to help people step into the power of their potential. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Guest Rebecca Biedler shares what she learned from personal experience when she confides those who join this conversation “It is ok to seek out help. If you're in the gym, or you're trying something new, it's ok to ask for directions. And it's ok to try something and stumble a little bit. I even have coaches who have helped me including a personal trainer and a sales coach. And I just invite people to, to just try, seek that out, not be ashamed to ask for help, not be ashamed to be new. Realize your autonomy. Your body is adaptable. Your brain is flexible. And you can decide. Be ok with being different than another person. It's ok to be different. Don't discount the positive. Learn from your mistakes and don't wait for a feeling, like ‘Oh, I need to be in the mood.' Showing up sometimes is the best thing you can do. Sometimes, it takes more than knowing the reasons for exercise to motivate you. So basically, I would try to summarize that is: Don't be ashamed. Don't discount the positive, and it's ok to be new.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Felipe Martinez, Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Indiana shares about Living in the Tension, “It is important in human relationships, in community work and family life to be ready for some of that tension to be there, that push and pull. And again, from a theological framework, so that we together discern what the right direction is for us to take. Or so that we together can hear through each other what God, what the universe is trying to say to us. I can't on my own, I would argue, figure life out. And so, if I'm going to live life as a human, I'm going to have to live life in community. If I'm going to live life in community, there's going to be tension in the ways in which you and I and others will understand our reality. And so, for us to walk together, as let's say a town, and not listen to each other, is to simplify something that's very complex.”I'm your podcast guest host Jason Carr. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. It will be your choice to utilize the gentle wind to ignite the kindling. In this episode, Pastor Felipe Martinez asserts that God speaks through each one of us. He explains that the reason there is tension inherent in listening to God is because we must listen to what God is saying through others in addition to what God is saying through us. Pastor shares that his strengths include diving deep to create win-wins and his commitment to learn from parishioners. He differentiates himself from other pastors and congregations with his passion for social justice and social justice issues and through his adherence to the conviction that God speaks through everyone. Felipe asserts that he is not one who strives to simplify, He notes the win-wins often occur to him in the grey areas. Felipe confides that he feels uncomfortable dealing with conflict. He notes some pastors have a gift for resolving conflict. But everything is still in front of us. We are constantly evolving, and the future is for us to look forward to with hope and anticipation like I wonder what's next to come. And that's for each one of us, but it's a mindset thing that we have to train ourselves to switch like from the negative hopelessness to seeing the good in it, and it's there.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Special guest Keith Weedman shares how getting a dangerous person to accept his constructive feedback changed two people's lives with guest host Jason Carr: “The other thing I knew was that he had a felony conviction on his record. He had once attacked a detective from behind with a knife…. Some people perceive the world in a way that brings the worst out of them, frequently, and Mike was somebody that perceived the world, that perceived himself and his situation in a way that brought the worst out of him, typically. And when you interact with somebody, you can help them change their perception. When you help them change their perception, you can elevate their engagement and performance. You could say that Mike was a great role model for what I do today because what I do today is I help leaders learn how to effect change that elevates engagement and performance…. Ten years went by. I was commuting to a job in Bartholomew County, Columbus, Indiana, and it was a one hour and 45-minute drive one way… I stopped at 6 a.m. to get a cup of coffee at a gas station. I bumped into Mike for the first time in ten years. He was dressed like a workaday Joe. I asked him where he was going. He was on his way to work at a different local factory. Mike had changed his life. He had also changed my life because I went to graduate school because of my encounter with Mike.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Then Keith tells a story about how he learned that the skills he had acquired were insufficient when an employee reacted to his constructive feedback by calling him the worst supervisor she has ever had. He acknowledges how in looking back that he failed by surrendering being the person with the stronger conviction. He shares how constructivism epistemology that he learned in graduate school is like applying the mindset of a true scientist outside of the field of science by recognizing that nothing can be proven, only disproven. He talks about shifting selection criteria for the perception and for knowledge you choose to which perception or knowledge is more useful instead of more accurate. Keith talks about perceiving as a creative act and that you are responsible for how people perceive your constructive feedback. He notes in Toastmasters, that Toastmasters give and receive constructive feedback in a helpful way. She was in hospice care and that was her last year was this. And then in 2020 during the pandemic, I realized that initially I was going to do it solo, and then I said, you know, I'm going to start inviting other people on to my platform because I felt that I wasn't the only one who had an urge to share, that I wasn't the only one who was dealing with grief, mental health, and desires healing. And I thought well let me open it up so that I can have people and it's open to anyone to come on and so it's not limited to just to the Hawaiian Islands but it's open to people from all walks of life to be able to share what they've done to work on their healing or what are the passions they have so that they can be able to embrace life to the fullest.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. And the tagline that I have on there that really defines my life is ‘a life made of choices instead of excuses'. I grew up in a traumatic childhood setting where my mother was a functioning alcoholic who would have fits of rage. And I know now as an adult that she was self-medicating herself. And I wouldn't have known that then as a kid.” Lisa then shares “My book talks about the severity of the horrid parts of my life. It also talks about the joy that my mother brought me. Welcome to Embers and Wind!In describing how this episode will be different, podcast host Keith Weedman states “I will share some of the best ideas from four recent guests with the intent of bringing more value to you. I will blend in my expertise 1) that knowledge, like beliefs can be limiting; 2) thatyou can change your selection criteria for the knowledge that you choose to apply from accuracy to useful, which knowledge, that fits reality, is the most useful; and 3) that people often confuse acquiring knowledge with applying knowledge to build skills. I am going to focus this episode on key ideas from Episode #49, Eric Feinendegen is a Distinguished Toastmaster, TEDx Speaker, skilled keynote speaker, and certified leadership coach. His message is ‘Strategies to Lead an Inspired Life'. Episode #48, Ant Blair is a skilled Toastmaster, TEDx Speaker, skilled keynote speaker. His message is ‘Keep Your Eyes on the Prize'. Episode #47 Sonja Martinovic is a certified high-performance coach. Her message is ‘Pursue Your True Self'. Episode #44, Noelle Turner is a retired professor of musical theater. She lives in Essen, Germany. Her message is ‘Without Rotary… I Wouldn't Be Here'.In this episode, host Keith Weedman highlights the best ideas he's learned from these four guests that he believes will be most helpful to you. He acknowledges Eric Feinendegen has reached the finals twice in Toastmasters International's annual World Championship of Public Speaking. He acknowledges Eric is a certified leadership coach trained by John Maxwell. Keith explains that a certified coach is trained to not give answers, ask open-ended, probing questions, help people solve their own problems, own their solutions, and learn how to solve future problems. Keith recognizes Ant Blair as a skilled Toastmaster with expertise in diversity and inclusion who inspires his African American brothers and sisters to gain access and encourages Caucasians to provide access. Keith talks about certified coach Sonja Martinovic and her dual niche helping entrepreneurs become high performers and helping coaches grow their coaching business. Her expertise includes quantum physics, NLP, mindset, and intuition. Keith shares that Noelle Turner's message is different because her focus is to give back to Rotary for helping her study the opera in Germany in 1976 after obtaining her master's degree at Indiana University. She notes Rotary's motto, Service Above Self is also for self because serving others helps Rotarians succeed. Keith shares about himself and his business acknowledging he will never pursue certification as a coach because his passion is to share the knowledge and skills he has acquired over decades to help leaders solve their employee engagement problem by learning how to effect change that elevates both engagement and performance through brief interactions. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Guest Eric Feinendegen shares this about his new book, The FEIN-er Things: “The strategies and the philosophies, they're for everybody, doesn't matter race, creed, gender, identity, whatever it is. But, here's where the rubber meets the road. It is not written for someone who wants a quick fix. It' is not written for someone who wants to take a pill and wake up the next morning and ‘Ahhh , life is wonderful!' I'm no superman or superwoman! Uh-uh! It is written for people that are willing to get their hands dirty, who are willing to do the mental work, the physical work, people that are willing to be committed, to stay consistent and that are willing to be dreamers. Because, you know, if you look at some of the people who are high achievers, it comes down to desire. I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. (Eric notes that most people cannot answer this first question.) Then ask yourself this second question each morning: 2) How far can I go? (Eric asserts people underestimate what they are capable of achieving.) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Ant Blair shares with guest host Jason Carr: “The confidence comes from mastery, man. When you know that you know that you know, it's a wrap. So, when I hit that TEDx stage and delivered that presentation, I knew I was going to kill it. And that might sound like an asshole thing to say, I knew I was going to kill it. I knew I was going to kill it. And when I walked off the stage, after I delivered that speech, I knew that I killed it. And that comes from mastery, man, that comes from mastery. I mastered that speech. Ten years, ten years I was eye on the prize, eye on the prize. Been in Toastmasters for ten years, man.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Larry McInnes says this about finding happiness: “Oh my gosh, I don't feel like I have to look for it anymore. I'm so good at finding it. It comes to me. It's so simple, it's stupid. You start off with gratitude. I'm grateful for being able to get up in the morning. I'm grateful for the smell of the coffee. I'm constantly grateful for the water that comes out of the faucet because that's just a miracle to me. Things like sitting in front of you right now and having this opportunity to speak with you is the point of gratitude. I think that's where a bunch of happiness is rooted” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. These stories will feel like a tender wind blowing on the embers of service that glow within you. In this weekly show, you will learn ideas, kindling for your embers. He realized then that something had to change and that he was the thing that needed to change. After being on his path to find happiness for 10 years, Larry notes how thrilled he is to discover he no longer needs to seek happiness because he has finally found it. He asserts learning how to generate gratitude was a foundation for his success. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Noelle Turner, born in the states and living for 45 years in Germany talks about cultural differences: “In the beginning, it was a difference, and there are still things that bother me, there are many. It's just little funny things that they don't sometimes keep a physical distance, like they walk past you and maybe bump into you and don't notice it. It's just how their culture is. You know, for us that would be considered rude. Or like, if you're talking to one of your friends, or something and they'll say something like ‘You look really terrible today!' For me, that's an insult. And Germans do that in a way to show they care. But it still bothers me, you know, ‘You look really tired.' And sometimes you feel great, and it makes you feel like ‘Oh, is there something wrong with me today?' I would never think of telling somebody that they didn't look good that day. But for them it's a way of showing that they're interested in you and that they care about you. But I still get insulted when people say that.”In this episode, Noelle shares how winning a Rotary Ambassadorial scholarship from Rotary in 1975 while finishing her master's degree at Indiana University in Bloomington opened the door for her to study opera in Germany and learn the German language. She talks about earning the opportunity to stay in then West Germany led to a career as an opera singer. She notes it was her love of musical theater growing up near New York that she developed in high school that enabled her to become the first musical theater professor in Germany because there was no one in Germany with comparable musical theater knowledge and experience as she had acquired from watching a Broadway show every Saturday. She recalls how touched she was when invited to join Rotary 15 years ago because this gave her a way to thank Rotary for the scholarship. She shares the discomfort she felt being the first female member of her club for a full year, a club that included 80 men. She notes she was offered the privilege to serve as club President 5 years later. She notes how serving as club President was a way to thank Rotary for the scholarship. She recounts seizing the opportunity to return to Bloomington, Indiana, in March 2013 to express her gratitude to the Bloomington Rotary club for the scholarship she received in 1975 during her term as President of the Rotary club in Essen, Germany. She recounts being asked by the female District Governor to help start a Rotary Passport club, a club that meets only virtually. She shares with pride that she will become club President on July 1st. While Noelle shares that she retired from her professor position at the Fulkwang University of the Arts five years ago, she feels busy and blessed by opportunities to teach masterclasses and workshops all over Europe in addition to providing private lessons. To connect with Noelle, she recommends reaching out to her by email: noelleturner@me.com. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Cameron Davidson states: “So it's actually kind of funny. The first time I heard about Rotary, of course before I knew what it was, I kind of just thought it was a club of just older people who just, you know, hung out and would have conversations. So the very first time I actually heard of Rotary and had an experience with Rotary, was when I was a sophomore in high school. My English teacher had encouraged me to participate in the (Rotary) 4-Way speech contest that our local Rotary club was hosting and the grand prize was $100. So, 15-year-old me thought ‘Wow, $100! What can I not do with $100?' So of course, I uh, I signed up to participate, and I ended up coming in first place. And this was like the very first experience that I had with the Rotary club…. The Rotary 4-Way Test is kind of like this motto that Rotarians and people associated with the Rotary club follow. And it's essentially like a guide that guides your actions and your thoughts and what you say. And basically, it's just ensuring that everything that you say or do is true. It's fair to everyone concerned. It builds good will and better friendships. And it's beneficial to everybody concerned.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. He explains how participating in RYLA stimulated his interest in Rotary Youth Exchange. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Host Keith Weedman states “I was working with a leader who led a team. In the second module, he acquired useful knowledge to apply to build his skill giving an employee constructive feedback in a way that effects change that elevates their engagement and performance. He received a two-week daily call to action to apply what he learned to build this leadership skill in 2 to 5 minutes each workday. This leader shared that he gave constructive feedback to a direct report one day. Then he gave them time to think about it and followed up the next workday. Then he stated ‘But the piece of feedback that I really took out of our last session was letting them kind of end that conversation and go into that reflection mode and then coming back to them a day later to check in was really beneficial because it allowed us to have a productive conversation about going forward. They reflected on what feedback I had given them and then we were able to put together a plan on how to really move forward and take that feedback and really capitalize on it. And that was something I had never done before.'” In this episode, Keith shares four ways he helps benevolent leaders solve their employee engagement problem: 1) expressing gratitude; 2) giving positive feedback; 3) giving constructive feedback; 4) sharing relevant, inspiring stories. He includes guidance for each of these ways. He tells three inspiring stories to illustrate them. One story he shares is about a benevolent leader he met in Rotary who stands out even among Rotarians by the example he sets putting service above self. He states he began studying and practicing constructivism epistemology in graduate school while he was working in a leadership position which eventually stimulated him to apply what he learned to help benevolent leaders solve their employee engagement problem by learning multiple ways to effect change that elevates both engagement and performance through brief interactions. He shares he invested 20,000 hours building his skill and developing curriculum to help leaders acquire relevant knowledge to build their skill elevating engagement and performance through brief interactions. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Jason Carr states “I went out to Facebook. I found somebody named Marci Hemby, and I reached out to her. I said ‘Did you go to St. Simons?' And she said “Yes, I did.' I said ‘What grade did you go there in?' She said ‘I was there in the 3rd and 4th grade.' And we continued to talk back and forth. And I quickly became, I don't want to say devastated, but a little depressed. And the reason why I became depressed is that all these years Marci had had a profound impact on me, but she didn't remember who I was. All these years for some reason I had held our friendship high in my mind. And when she didn't remember me that caused me to reflect on well why, after you said three and a half decades, did I still remember this person from 3rd grade? As I began to reflect on this, I began to understand that she singlehandedly taught me the lesson that's it's OK to be yourself. She's my first friend I ever had that was that demonstration that it's Ok to be who you are, and you don't have to seek continual popularity to be happy.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Guest Kirk Bouchie, current Rotary District #6580 Governor serving southern Indiana, shares what drew him to Rotary “I joined Rotary #1 because I was asked. One of our board members asked me to join and to come to Rotary. And #2, I thought it was a good thing to do as a community leader, a young community leader. I really didn't know what I was doing at that point, but I knew that there were a lot of people that were in the Rotary club at that time that I needed to get to know. Many of them I knew. Having grown up here, I knew the names. I probably knew some of the families. I knew a lot of the people that were in leadership at that time, I knew a lot of their kids because I was kind of the next generation. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Brian Buck states “I'm a huge proponent, I don't know where this concept came from, but it's ‘Your attitude is contagious.' And so are we being purposeful in what we're infecting others with? Are we infecting each other with respect and positivity? Or are we infecting each other, and like you can feel when someone distrusts you. You can feel when someone thinks they're above you or below you. Welcome to Embers and Wind! While most people remember where they were on 9/11, Guest Mark Pillar recounts his vivid memory being engaged in a Strategic Command simulated exercise, under the direction of Admiral Mies, when Admiral Mies canceled the exercise to respond to the attack on the World Trade Center: “Being a pilot, I mean there's not a cloud in the sky. And so you'd think that maybe… Certainly air traffic control would not have vectored this airplane into the tower. Probably the guy had a heart attack or something like that and hit it inadvertently. And at the time we didn't know what kind of airplane it was. We thought it was maybe a private airplane, a small Cessna or something like that. And so as we were watching the first tower burn, we saw the second airplane which obviously was a commercial jetliner, we saw that go right into the building and the fire shoot out the other end. And that changed everything. And Admiral Mies turned and said ‘That's no accident! We're under attack. Send a message, messages out to cancel the exercise, and we'll go into real world operations.'” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. In each podcast episode, you will hear stories. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Guest Bob Lewis talks about how he teaches leaders to utilize behavioral interviewing to help them hire and retain top talent: “I tell people that you can have measurable stuff in behavioral just as skill. But you really have to have strong data to support those behaviors. Just like the question of ‘Are you a good listener?' how can you tell? The predictive answer is that a good listener talks about other people. A non-predictive answer which is kind of a term that they said they talked about themselves. In that answer, I didn't get a measurement that they have communication skills. But if I give them a predictive answer, meaning that they have the answer to that question meaning they talked about other folks, then I'm going to ask them several questions around communication. I'm just not going to ask one in isolation. I actually usually ask five questions for communication, and they have to get 3 out of the 5 right to say ‘You know what, I think they're a good communicator.' All too often, we ask one question, and then we go around the table and they say ‘Who did you like?' And they hire that person on who they liked and not the actual data from the interview.” In this episode, Bob Lewis shares many tips leaders can utilize to both hire and retain talent. He notes past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior. He encourages leaders to ask their top performers how they would answer a question they intend to utilize in their job interviews and then compare candidates' answers with top performers'. He draws a distinction between behavioral interviewing and selection and talent interviewing and shares how he utilizes both to hire and retain talent. He shares how he utilizes the data from the job interviews of new employees to give to new employees in the first 30-seconds as a written document and in the verbal overview he subsequently provides. He talks about strengths and StrengthsFinder from Gallup and how much he values what he learned from StrengthsFinder. He states, based upon his own experience, that people can significantly build their strengths while make only minimal improvement on their gaps. He talks about how he utilizes data from new employees' job interviews to set goals that build on their strengths and manage the gaps they want to manage. He shares inspiring stories from his work that illustrate how he utilizes the ideas he shares. He notes that he sees his leadership role as being a guide to employee success which facilitates employee learning and engagement. He notes that he utilizes Neuro-linguistic Programming and all three learning styles (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) in his work.He shares the importance of utilizing the learning style of each employee he leads and being respectful of them and what they say they prefer. He shares as an example that some employees like being praised in front of others while others prefer a private setting. He talks about stay interviews, why some of your top talent stays, and how a leader can learn from them. Bob Lewis's company website is the website for this episode. Through just serendipity, we were brought back together and at the time both of us were living pretty miserable lives. Even though you know you don't show that to people, you aren't forthcoming with that with people because you're a little ashamed. Through our reconnection, we were able to go to a women's retreat. And all we knew was that it was women that we didn't know coming together, and it was something about positivity. The hand of God, we were placed together in that retreat.Guest Tonya Hendley added “So we didn't know what we were getting into. We came together and started learning in this two or three days so much information that there was a different way to live, and that we could create and live how we wanted to. And so I think that it was really empowering to know that life was not happening to us. We were happening to life, and we were allowing life to run us instead of the other way around. And so, I think that we just after that retreat really sat back and said ‘OK, we don't want to live like this anymore.'” In this episode, Lori and Tonya talk about being roommates in college and then losing touch with one another. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Paul Glover states “I'm an acquired taste. Only about 20% of those leaders who come to me through referrals actually become clients. Most of the time my approach, by the way I bill myself as the no BS workplace performance coach because I really believe that it is difficult to change. And when leaders come to a coach, they're looking to improve, to get better, to change. But it's a hard process and harder than most leaders expect. And I tell everyone that the most difficult person to coach is a person who's successful. They go ‘You want me to do what and it's going to hurt? Well I'm not so sure that I want to do that. ' Well that requires commitment. So when I engage in a coaching relationship, there has to be commitment on both sides. I expect the person who I'm going to be coaching to commit to the process. But I also believe that I need to commit, not just my time. So I decided that the way I approach coaching is that my compensation is based on results.”I'm your host, Keith Weedman. He owns that his past criminal behavior closed the door on his law career. He talks about antifragility, the ability to use adversity to leap forward, that he discovered in his own journey and how he helps small business owners to use adversity to leap forward. He shares his 3 blind spots that were involved in his criminal acts which led him to prison: the need to belong, the need for approval and hubris. Whether you are a Christian, have a different faith or consider yourself to be an agnostic or an atheist, you can experience these benefits each and every day of every year. These benefits are two positive emotions many associate with the giving and receiving of gifts with people they love. They are joy in giving and gratitude in receiving. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Reflecting why he chose this title for this episode, guest Steven English states: “Stepping past the comfortable and the familiar, so many people, including myself, we live in that comfortable and familiar. And when I look back on the last three years, yeah three years, three years and a month, something like that. It actually goes even further back now that I think about it. There were a lot of steps where I was stepping past the comfortable and the familiar. As the end of my biography introduction goes, my background is in science. I was a product and process control engineer, product quality and reliability engineer, reliability engineer, all of that in the semiconductor industry for all those years. And what would have been the default would have been to just stick around in it and not allow myself to express what I really, really felt was the gift that I was given. That's why I chose that is I feel like if we could have a conversation that's going to serve somebody, I feel that I want to make that the cornerstone because I know there's so many people out there who have talents and passions and characteristics that are just not expressed because they are stuck in the comfortable and the familiar.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Welcome to Embers and Wind! Guest Julie D'Ann states, “Honestly, I have to say, I feel like my entire life has prepared me to come to this moment. I remember when I was growing up always just wondering ‘How do you figure out what you want to do in this life?' There's just so much, and there were so many places I wanted to go. I just couldn't figure out anything. I just wanted to experience things. And now that I look back on my life, I realize that all of those experiences were preparing me for this moment, to come to the realization of my true purpose in life. And finding that purpose is why we're all here. You have to go through life and experience life to figure out what it is that you want and you don't want and then you discover your purpose. And my purpose I believe is guiding others, specifically children, to figuring out that there is a process to discovering your true nature and purpose in life. And so it is amazing and it's a wonderful feeling to have finally arrived. And now being able to share this with the world is so empowering, and it gives you a sense of confidence and resentment? and resolve unlike anything I've ever experienced before.”In this episode, guest Julie D'Ann shares how her experiences in meditation, yoga, law of attraction prepared her to fulfill her mission helping children become resilient. She tells how meditation inspired her to create a program for children that blends movement with breathwork with directing her mind and what she learned from the law of attraction. Welcome to Embers and Wind!Guest Karen Gibson states “A lot of parents don't see the need for a parent coach. For tutoring, I made the most when the economy was at its worst because parents will do anything for their children. But they don't realize when you invest in themselves as a parent, and when you become a better parent, guess what? Your children will benefit from your parenting skills because if you parent the way that you were parented… I mean a lot of parents say ‘I turned out fine.' But you know how we talked about unawareness. How do you really know that what you're teaching your child will build resilience? If you're frustrated with your child. That means when you find yourself saying ‘Why can't they be more responsible? Why aren't they listening? What am I doing that's wrong? It really does take, like you said, parent resilience. Welcome to Embers and Wind! In describing how he helps people keep their dream job after helping them land it, guest James Kennedy states “So in terms of helping them keep it, well in terms of the skills and stuff that I've given them, Keith. Okay, what's a dream job one day might not be what they want to do forever. Right. So the tools I'm giving to people as part of the resume course as a part of the training and everything I give them, is a skill for life. So that when they've had enough of that one job, they can start looking for the next level in whatever the next level is for them. Because when I work with people, I say your resume is a living document, right. The next job that you get into, there's going to be stories, there's going to be problems that you've had there that you need to keep documenting all the way through so that when it comes to the next job you already have the stories there, you've kept up to date, to help people go on to the next level whatever the next level is for them.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman.
