Is Functional Medicine truly addressing the root causes of Chronic Illness or has it started falling into the same symptom-focused patterns as conventional healthcare? In this episode of the Health Detective Podcast, Michele Scarlet sits down with Reed Davis, founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), to explore the philosophy, principles, and clinical framework that have helped thousands of practitioners and clients uncover the hidden stressors behind chronic health challenges. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Reed shares how FDN was created to focus on Root Cause Healing rather than diagnoses, symptoms, or condition-specific protocols. He explains why so many people continue to struggle with Gut Health issues, Hormone Imbalance, Burnout, Brain Fog, Anxiety, fatigue, and other chronic symptoms despite being told their labs are “normal.” Together, Michele and Reed discuss the concept of Metabolic Chaos, the limitations of both conventional and Functional Medicine models, and why lasting Health Transformation requires looking at the whole person rather than isolated symptoms. You'll learn: What Metabolic Chaos really means and why it matters Why hidden stressors are often the true drivers of chronic symptoms How Functional Lab Testing helps identify healing opportunities The FDN D.R.E.S.S. framework: Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, and Supplementation Why supplements should support not replace the foundations of health Reed's perspective on peptides, biohacking, detox protocols, and wellness trends The role of Natural Healing, Functional Wellness, and Holistic Health in long-term outcomes Why practitioners must focus on healing principles rather than chasing symptoms Reed also shares how FDN evolved into a global Practitioner Training program and why Health Coaches, Functional Health Practitioners, alternative medicine practitioners, and wellness professionals are increasingly seeking a more comprehensive approach to helping clients achieve better outcomes. Whether you're working to improve your own health or exploring a future as an FDN Practitioner, this episode offers a powerful look at the framework, mindset, and healing principles that continue to define Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. If you're passionate about Functional Health, Root Cause Health, Practitioner Education, Functional Diagnostics, and helping people create lasting change, this conversation is one you won't want to miss.

Send us Fan MailWhat if modern medicine has become incredibly good at saving children's lives…but society still hasn't figured out how to help many of those children truly live afterward?Dr. Nicholas Holekamp, MD is the Chief Health Transformation Officer at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in St. Louis ( https://rankenjordan.org/about-us/leadership/nicholas-holekamp-md/ ), one of only a handful of pediatric bridge hospitals in the United States and the only one of its kind in Missouri ( www.RankenJordanFoundation.org ).For more than two decades, Dr. Holekamp has helped pioneer a radically different approach to caring for children with complex medical conditions through Ranken Jordan's innovative “Care Beyond the Bedside” model - a philosophy built around a deceptively simple but powerful idea: children heal better when they are active, engaged, social, and out of bed.Under Dr. Holekamp's leadership, Ranken Jordan evolved from a small 26-bed pediatric nursing facility into a nationally recognized 60-bed specialty hospital focused on helping medically complex children transition safely from intensive hospital care back to home and community life.A graduate of Dartmouth College and Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Holekamp completed his pediatric residency at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center before joining Ranken Jordan in 2000. Along the way, he has become one of the leading voices in pediatric complex care and transitional medicine.Dr. Holekamp's work has combined clinical care, hospital transformation, and research - including published studies demonstrating how movement, play, environment, and family-centered care can improve outcomes for medically fragile children while potentially reducing healthcare utilization and costs.Dr. Holekamp has been recognized for both his medical leadership and community impact, including receiving the Missouri Foundation for Health's Dr. Corinne Walentik Leadership in Health Award and delivering a TEDxStLouis talk on the future of pediatric healing and healthcare transformation.Today, as Chief Health Transformation Officer, Dr. Holekamp is focused on sharing the lessons of Ranken Jordan with hospitals and healthcare systems across the country - challenging long-held assumptions about what healing environments for children should actually look like.#Pediatrics #ChildrensHospital #MedicalEthics #HealthcareInnovation #PediatricCare #Neurodevelopment #ChildrenWithMedicalComplexity #HealthcarePodcast #Medicine #PediatricMedicine #HospitalInnovation #CriticalCare #Bioethics #FamilyCenteredCare #HealthcareLeadership #MedicalResearch #VentilatorCare #Rehabilitation #PediatricRehabilitation #FutureOfHealthcare #HealthcareSystems #MedicalTechnology #ProgressPotentialPossibilities #HealthcareTransformation #PediatricICUSupport the show

He asked his doctor to hold off on surgery for three months and gave himself that time to find a natural path. As a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, I've seen firsthand the harsh realities our service members face. It's concerning to see Veterans Affairs prioritize private equity over true rehabilitation, sometimes even offering lethal injection to struggling individuals. Despite billions spent on suicide prevention, the problem of suicidal thoughts persists, and the growing concern of traumatic brain injury among veterans remains poorly addressed. We need to advocate for better veteran benefits and support for our Canadian military. America spends nearly double what the fourth-ranked country spends on healthcare per capita — and still ranks among the worst in outcomes. So what exactly are we paying for? In this episode of the Experiencing Healthcare Podcast, Jamie Preston and Your Health CEO Matt Staub examine what happens when healthcare gets treated like gasoline: something people expect to be available, can't easily compare on quality, and ultimately choose based on price or convenience. When brand and price stop mattering, the only differentiator left is how patients are made to feel — and whether they trust the person across from them enough to actually change. What you'll hear in this episode: Why Matt ranks service above outcomes and access — and the patient story that changed how he thinks about both The "Chick-fil-A problem": how your healthcare experience is now being compared to your best service experience anywhere, not just the clinic down the street What provider burnout really looks like when a clinician closes their notes at 11pm wondering if their patient listened How insurance billing creates distrust that bleeds directly into the patient-provider relationship — and what healthcare organizations can do about it Why the most caring thing a doctor can do sometimes feels like the worst customer service in the room If you've ever felt like a number in a waiting room — or if you've ever been the one trying to help someone who wouldn't listen — this conversation will stay with you. Key Takeaways: Navigating life-altering health challenges requires trusting your own instincts and advocating for yourself. Combining traditional medicine with alternative therapies can provide a more holistic approach to healing. Listening closely to your body helps identify what supports your wellbeing and what does not. Leaning on friends, family, and community creates a strong support system during difficult times. Faith, gratitude, and moments of stillness can guide important decisions and foster resilience. About Lindsey Roy: Lindsey Roy has twice needed surgery to save her life. The first, a leg amputation after a traumatic boating accident and the second a double lung transplant after being diagnosed with a rare and progressive disease which constricted the blood vessels in her lungs. These experiences, coupled with her natural gifts for speaking and writing, have created a passion in Lindsey to tell her story in the hopes of helping others tackle whatever obstacles life throws at them. She did a TEDx talk in 2017 titled "What Trauma Taught Me About Happiness" which has been viewed by nearly 200,000 people. Her story has been featured in major publications, such as O Magazine, Fast Company, Forbes, and Working Mother. Lindsey's perspective is also honed by her roles as a corporate executive, mother, and wife. She is Senior VP Strategy & Brand at Hallmark, where she is leading various initiatives and groups—many of which draw from the lessons shared in The Gift of Perspective. She has a degree in Journalism & Advertising with a minor in Speech from Kansas State University and serves on many charitable boards, including Ability KC, Steps of Faith, and the Ad Council. Her greatest joy in life is spending time with her family—her husband Aaron and children, Mitchell and Morgan. I spent 15 years only watching sports because of my life at ESPN, so I missed the initial Duck Dynasty craze—but getting to know Willie and Korie Robertson today was exactly what my soul needed. We go far beyond the camo and the beards to discuss the raw reality of family, faith, and what happens when your life changes overnight. In this episode, Korie and Willie get incredibly honest about their "rough start"—including a breakup at 17 and a "knockdown drag-out" fight with Korie's father before they got married at 18 and 19. We talk about the psychology of sudden fame, the "ginger angel" that changed Willie's health, and the "nuclear reactor" of stress that comes with running a family business while filming a hit TV show. We also dive deep into why they never left their hometown, how they handled the loss of the legendary Phil Robertson, and their mission to bring good news and revival to a world that feels increasingly dark. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their journey, this conversation is a masterclass in resilience and staying rooted in what matters. Sponsors: Good Ranchers - Subscribe and save up to $500. In this fascinating episode of the Compared to Who? podcast, Heather Creekmore is joined by Dr. Brook Sheehan to explore the topic of listening to your body—addressing misconceptions, fears, and spiritual questions that often come up in conversations about health and self-care. Dr. Brook Sheehan shares her powerful personal story, including growing up in a conventional medical model, her diagnosis with cerebral palsy, and her journey to becoming a chiropractor. Through her experiences, Dr. Brook discusses how she moved from ignoring her body’s signals to idolizing health—and finally, to navigating a balanced, grace-filled approach to honoring the wisdom God built into our bodies. Highlights include: The difference between bodily wisdom and New Age thinking from a Christian perspective How tuning into simple “this or that” decisions each day can help rebuild trust with your body Destigmatizing emotional eating and recognizing that body signals aren’t always black and white Practical cues to listen for—like cravings, random sneezing, and dry skin—and how to respond with compassion and wisdom Encouragement for everyone who feels “broken” or out of touch with what their body needs The importance of grace over perfection in both spiritual and physical health Dr. Brook also offers her “Body Signal Decoder” as a valuable resource for listeners who want to decode common body signals from a holistic perspective, covering physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual pillars.
