Chuck Todd reacts to Elon Musk leaving the Trump Administration and discusses the valuable lessons to be learned from Elon's tenure. Chuck also reacts to the recent pardons by Donald Trump and explains why they are bad for the country. Then he discusses the problems with the “big, beautiful bill”.Then, Chuck is joined by Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of Run For Something, to discuss the future of Democratic leadership and the urgent need to recruit a new generation of candidates. They examine how Republicans, following the lead of Newt Gingrich's GoPAC, have outpaced Democrats in preparing talent for public office — and why the Democratic bench remains so thin.Litman shares insights into the challenges young progressives face, from lack of institutional support to financial and family pressures. They discuss the messy but well-intentioned efforts like David Hogg's DNC initiative, the communication gap with younger voters, and why the information ecosystem is reshaping political engagement.Together, they explore the mechanics of candidate recruitment, debates over ideological litmus tests, and how Run For Something navigates hot-button issues like trans rights and independent candidacies. From socioeconomic diversity in elected office to the underrepresentation of renters and working-class Americans, this conversation is a candid look at how Democrats can rebuild from the ground up — and what success might look like in the 2026 midterms. Finally, in “Ask Chuck,” Chuck digs into the mailbag to answer one of the biggest questions about the state of politics.00:00 - Chuck recaps his weekend06:26 - Elon's Exit from Trump Administration14:43 - Reaction to Trump's pardons21:49 – Amanda Litman joins the Chuck Toddcast!22:19 – What is “Run For Something”?24:19 – Newt Gingrich started GoPAC to prep candidates on the right25:19 – The DNC dropped the ball on prepping candidates27:34 – Emily's List was good for candidate training, but only for women29:04 – There are very few young elected Democrats30:04 – David Hogg's DNC effort is a noble one, but messy for the DNC32:19 – The generational divide in the Democratic party33:49 – Democrats need younger leaders to speak to younger voters34:49 – The Republican party changed drastically in ten years35:49 – Voters under 35 have seen a lot of government failure37:49 – Voters receive their information so differently now39:04 – What is the process for recruiting and training candidates?42:49 – Is there an ideological litmus test for prospective candidates?44:04 – Trans issues have been very challenging for progressives45:49 – What if a candidate's passion issue isn't a voting issue?47:04 – Will “Run For Something” recruit and run independent candidates?49:49 – Could we see a lot of former federal employees run for office?51:49 – Will Run For Something get involved in debates about updating the democracy53:19 – Legislators should be paid more55:19 – Lack of money and kids are a huge impediment to candidates under 4057:19 – We need more socioeconomic diversity in elected office*59:19 – Renters aren't represented in Congress*61:04 – The Democrats have become the “presidency or bust” party*63:04 – If you want to improve the Democratic brand, you have to change the politicians65:19 – What does success look like in 2026 midterms?67:22 – “Ask Chuck”
Cofounder of Run For Something and Author of When We’re In Charge Amanda Litman joins Sam to talk about the gerontocracy running our country and her call for politicians over 70 to stop running for re-election. They talk about how to be a better boss and why that includes creating better parental leave programs and the importance of a four day work week. Sam asks Amanda if we’ll ever have “normal” boring politicians again, and why sometimes it’s ok to make enemies if it’s in service of a greater good. Plus they discuss that there’s really no such thing as a waste of resources in politics, and what would you do if you were 30% braver. Keep up with Samantha Bee @realsambee on Instagram and X. This week, V and Sami unpack why the "Democratic Party is a delusional circle jerk." Well, kinda! They cover the very quiet White House Correspondents' Dinner and deep dive into Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes's 2024 election cycle book, Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House. Then, Run For Something's Amanda Litman stops by to give us hope about future Democratic Party wins. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
As Tesla's losses mount, Elon Musk promises to step away from his work at DOGE and focus on his flailing car company. Trump and his top advisers flip-flop on China tariffs, even as Trump steers more cash into his own pocket by raffling off White House access to the top investors in his memecoin. Exclusive new polling shows Trump's weaknesses on immigration, even as the administration continues its crackdown and the courts push back. Jon and Dan discuss if Elon is gone for good or merely taking a sabbatical, whether DOGE will hold any sway without him, and how a high-profile exit from CBS's 60 Minutes is a troubling sign for media everywhere. Then, Jon and Dan sit down with Amanda Litman, the co-founder of Run For Something, to talk about her new book for Crooked Media Reads, When We're in Charge, a brilliant guide for young people looking to get into leadership positions. We have this preconceived notion of who can, and should, be a leader. We need to throw that out the window. According to our guest, President and Co-founder of Run For Something, Amanda Litman, “Party recruitment is the most important thing we can be doing right now.” These are the people who will change the game. The candidates who will connect with the voters and set us on a brighter path. As Amanda says, “We need better people. Anywhere can be competitive, so we need to be fielding candidates everywhere.” And with a track record of bringing us leaders like: Sarah McBride, Molly McMorrow, and Jasmine Crockett…you know Amanda knows what she's talking about. In this throwback episode from October 2020, Quinn & Brian discuss: Why state elections matter not just for your state but for the future of our planet. Our guests are: Aimy Steele & Amanda Litman. Aimy is a candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives in District 82, a mother of five, a former Spanish teacher, and a former K-12 principal. Amanda is the co-founder and Executive Director of Run For Something, a PAC that is recruiting and supporting young progressives who want to run for state and local elections. They're endorsing more than 500 candidates in the 2020 elections, primarily women and people of color, and they're inviting all of us to take an active role in writing a new future for our country. And let me tell you -- if those 500 candidates are even half as inspiring as Aimy, we're in for one hell of a new generation of state representatives. Aimy represents one of those rare times when we get the hero we need and they're so much better than we deserve. Really, we probably do deserve a horde of bitter white men who all go to the same discount barber, but our world will be so much better off if we elevate diverse voices who actually know how to help our country's diverse communities.-----------Have feedback or questions? This week's show kicks off with United States Senator for Georgia Raphael Warnock at the Democratic National Convention, essentially reassuring white men no one is coming for their jobs–except the union-busting oligarch-backed Republicans they tend to vote for. With recent polling trends and the resurgence of unions, could the "dying of whiteness" era finally be on its way out? CNN reports that white working-class voters without a college degree in the Midwest are shifting their support from Donald Trump to Kamala Harris. Even in Nebraska's swing 2nd District—in a heavily Republican state—Harris beats Trump. To dig deeper, we're joined by expert white man Ross Morales-Rocketto, the lead organizer of White Dudes for Harris. Through one Zoom call, Ross and his team raised $4.5 million for the Harris-Walz Campaign, engaging 200,000 participants across all 50 states. But this isn't just a fleeting moment; it's a movement. Ross is on a mission to challenge the toxic masculinity perpetuated by figures like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate, promoting a new masculinity defined by empathy and community. He's also the co-founder and co-executive director of Run for Something, which helped elect over 1,000 young people, ushering in a new generation of progressive leaders. We'll also hear from Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack, who will provide crucial insights on dismantling toxic masculinity from a Black queer perspective. It's been just over two weeks since President Joe Biden took the extraordinary step of stepping down from the 2024 presidential race, making Vice President Kamala Harris only the second female to ever make it to the top of a presidential ticket, and the first female of color to do so. Is the country ready? What lessons can Harris' communication team take from women who have come before her in seeking the most powerful office in America? And can they successfully manage to tame a Republican media narrative that may treat her race and gender as detractors rather than strengths? Cooper aims to bring new ideas, fresh perspectives, and active community engagement to Gwinnett County Public Schools, emphasizing the need for progressive voices on the school board to support the students, staff, and the school community. The endorsement reflects the organization's commitment to combating far-right extremism and upholding civil rights. ................…..read more at gwinnettdailypost.com STORY 2: Gwinnett Moving To Automate System To Handle Incoming Absentee Ballots Gwinnett County commissioners have taken steps to enhance their election processes by approving the purchase of a $401,508 vote-by-mail automation system from Quadient Inc. This automation system is aimed at efficiently handling incoming absentee ballots and ensuring the county's readiness for future election cycles, particularly during pandemic situations. The funding for this purchase will primarily come from the Capital Project Fund, with $21,508 sourced from Gwinnett's General Tax Contingency project. Additionally, the commissioners approved a $708,000 contract with Fort Orange Press for ballot printing. This contract will cover the printing of emergency and provisional ballots for use in the 2024 elections and the printing and mailing of absentee-by-mail packets. The decision to award this contract to Fort Orange Press followed a competitive request for proposals process. These measures are part of the county's ongoing efforts to improve and secure its election infrastructure. STORY 3: Gwinnett Police Searching for Suspect in Alleged Theft at Burger King in Lawrenceville Gwinnett County police are searching for a man who reportedly followed two women to their car in a Burger King parking lot in Lawrenceville and stole their money. The incident occurred on October 6 at the Burger King on Duluth Highway. The unidentified suspect followed the women to their car, entered the back passenger seat, brandished a handgun, and demanded money. The victims eventually gave him $60 and $30, although they initially claimed to have no money. The suspect is described as a young Hispanic male wearing a black jacket, plaid pants, and an LA Dodgers cap with a decal on the bill. Surveillance images have been released, and anyone with information is urged to contact the police or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward. Break 2: M.O.G. – TOM WAGES OBITS – ESOG STORY 4: Gwinnett Police Will Hold Hiring Event on November 4 Gwinnett County Police will host a hiring event on November 4 for residents interested in law enforcement careers. The event offers a $5,100 hiring incentive and a $2,000 relocation incentive for non-local hires. While appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are also welcome to attend the event at the county's training center. The hiring process is divided into two phases, encompassing various assessments and background checks, with the entire process taking approximately 90 days. Applicants need a high school diploma or G.E.D., a valid driver's license, U.S. citizenship, and eligibility for P.O.S.T. certification. Gwinnett County Police provide competitive incentives for officers, including educational bonuses. STORY 5: Georgia Gwinnett College Receives National Award for Excellence Georgia Gwinnett College's School of Education (SOE) has received the 2023 Frank Murray Leadership Recognition for Continuous Improvement from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). This award highlights the SOE's exceptional preparation for educators, recognizing their strong alignment with the college's mission for student success and innovative learning experiences. The CAEP gives this award to education preparation providers that demonstrate evidence of achieving CAEP accreditation without stipulations or areas for improvement. GGC's SOE offers teacher candidates a comprehensive, research-based instructional experience, preparing them to fully engage in all aspects of the classroom before becoming first-year teachers. The school also maintains a strong partnership with Gwinnett County Public Schools. The award underscores the SOE's excellence and commitment to the success of its students. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: JACKSON EMC – INGLES 4 – LAWRENCVILLE EVENTS (BOO FEST & HARVEST FEST) STORY 6: Former Classmates Reunite Years Later As Teachers At McKendree Elementary School Kaitlyn McKendrick and Evelyn Neese, who were classmates in fifth grade 17 years ago, now find themselves working together as teachers at McKendree Elementary School. Their friendship began in Mr. Segool's class, where they discovered their personalities clicked. They spent their early years forming a close bond, spending time at each other's houses and creating dances, cheerleading routines, and playing teacher. Their middle school years led to a pause in their friendship as they had different schedules and classmates. However, fate has reunited them at McKendree Elementary School, where they are now teaching fifth grade. They are passionate about creating relationships with their students and enjoy the discussions and learning that happens in their classrooms. STORY 7: The Gwinnett County Public Library is currently accepting applications for its New Start Entrepreneurship Incubator Program (NSEI), which provides business education to individuals who were formerly incarcerated. NSEI offers a six-month course aimed at helping ex-offenders, particularly minority populations and people of color in Georgia, to establish and sustain their own businesses. The program includes in-person classes, online coursework, access to mentors, and community partners. Participants receive training on various aspects of entrepreneurship, including finance, marketing, licensing, and business plan development. NSEI originated as a grant project in 2021, funded by Google in partnership with the American Library Association, and has already graduated 29 entrepreneurs across three cohorts. The program culminates in a pitch event called Launchpad, where entrepreneurs present their business ideas to community business leaders. The library provides laptops and Wi-Fi services to program participants, and top graduates can receive funding from the Gwinnett County Public Library Foundation. We'll have final thoughts after this. Break 4: Henssler 60 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Good morning, RVA! It's 59 °F, and today we've got more of the same—which is not so bad. Expect highs right around 70 °F and more of those cloudy skies. Temperatures will start to creep up tomorrow, and the sun has tentative plans to return this weekend. As of right now, next week looks stunning. Water cooler Yesterday, I got my mail-in ballot for this coming November's election, which is, of course, very exciting. I really enjoy voting by mail: Filling out the piece of paper, carefully following all the instructions—you don't get to join your fellow citizens in the corporate moment of Election Day, but, to me, it still feels like an important ceremony. It's nice, and if you'd like to join me in voting by mail (separately, from our own homes), you have until October 27th to request your ballot from the Virginia Department of Elections. But voting is just one part of participating in democracy! We need good, progressive candidates to vote for, too (preferably ones that constantly think about zoning and rezoning and love nothing more than a good public work survey). That candidate could be you! Yes, literally you! Every great candidate was, at some point, a person standing in their kitchen shouting about some issue and wondering aloud, “Fine, maybe I should just run!” A couple weeks ago I got this really lovely email from Traci Fanssen, candidate for the Chesterfield School Board, Matoaca District: “Heads up that Chesterfield has School Board elections THIS year—and I answered your question ‘should I run for school board' with a YES, because there is a Moms For Liberty candidate in my district that I did NOT want to let run unopposed. I tried to talk a few other people into it, but they had other obligations, and so, here I am! Long-time public education advocate putting my name on the line to defend the freedoms to learn, teach, and parent—without letting only the loudest voices in the room dictate what all children have access to in their public schools. School board candidates don't get the ad-spending headlines, but we are on the front lines of standing against the censorship of vulnerable communities. And if anyone is considering running next year in Richmond, I have some tips for them to get started.” How awesome is this?? Follow Traci's example! If you, a regular person, can't stop shouting to your friends and family about an issue—transportation, parks, education, child care, whatever—maybe it's time to get serious about it. Considering running for something in Richmond's 2024 elections, and take Traci up on her offer—but probably wait until after the election so she has a minute to breathe. A new north-south bus rapid transit survey just dropped, and this one asks you some questions about the specific route a north-south BRT should run. I'm fascinated that they've included Lombardy Street in a couple of the options. Lombardy is pretty narrow, and I'm not sure where they'd cram some of the infrastructure needed to support true bus rapid transit. Like...would it just run in mixed traffic the length of Lombardy? That does not seem very BRT-like. I'd like to learn more! City Council's Governmental Operations committee meets today and has two interesting items on their agenda. First, RES. 2023-R011, which would take some steps toward the City acquiring Evergreen and East End cemeteries from the now defunct EnRichmond Foundation. Second, they'll hear a presentation recapping the recommended changes to the City's charter. If you zoned out during that entire process, this helpful summary document will do a good job of catching you up. The Richmond Times-Dispatch's Em Holter reports on yesterday's Casino 2.0 job hubbub: “The developers of the Richmond Grand Resort and Casino have added another promise to its growing list: the prospect of hundreds of union construction jobs.” Union jobs are good, casinos are bad. Both can be true! This morning's longread The End of Privacy is a Taylor Swift Fan TikTok Account Armed with Facial Recognition Tech Ten-years-ago me would have absolutely zero hope of understanding the collection of words that make up this article's title. Today-me sort of understands that this seems really bad and kind of wants to just stay inside forever. The 90,000 follower-strong account typically picks targets who appeared in other viral videos, or people suggested to the account in the comments. Many of the account's videos show the process: screenshotting the video of the target, cropping images of the face, running those photos through facial recognition software, and then revealing the person's full name, social media profile, and sometimes employer to millions of people who have liked the videos. There's an entire branch of content on TikTok in which creators show off their OSINT doxing skills—OSINT being open source intelligence, or information that is openly available online. But the vast majority of them do it with the explicit consent of the target. This account is doing the same, without the consent of the people they choose to dox. As a bizarre aside, the account appears to be run by a Taylor Swift fan, with many of the doxing videos including Swift's music, and including videos of people at the Eras Tour. If you'd like to suggest a longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol' Patreon. Picture of the Day I saw this amazing machine on the road the other day, and then learned about the “Smash My Trash” business model of compacting trash in other companies' haul-away dumpsters. Ross Morales Rocketto I feel pretty safe in saying that we all have gripes about our government. Where it's not doing enough, where it's overreaching. Most of us just gripe, Ross Morales Rocketto has taken a decidedly different path. Along with his co-founder, Amanda Litman, Ross has made it his mission to get as many young (read under 40) progressives elected to offices at the state and local level around the country as possible. From their start, rising from the ashes of the 2016 campaign, their organization, Run For Something, has been guiding successively larger numbers of young people as they run for elected office. What they've built in a really short period of time, is amazing. Ross and I talk about Run For Something but mostly about how important having a strong progressive base is, especially in light of the deeply conservative Supreme Court that we're dealing with. He's also very honest about the fact that having a (D) next to your name doesn't necessarily mean that you're someone who will fight to build a more just country. It's a great conversation. I came away feeling hopeful and energized and I think you will too. Have a listen. About Ross: Ross Morales Rocketto is the co-founder and co-executive director of Run For Something, a piece of democratic infrastructure designed to recruit and support the next generation of young, diverse, and progressive political leaders. To date Run For Something has worked with more than 125,000 individuals who are interested in running for office. Run For Something as helped elect more than 650 new folks across the country. Before starting Run For Something Ross spent 20 years in electoral politics, having worked for candidates from school board to president. Ross lives in Washington DC with his partner, Jess, their dog, Nacho and cat, Baby Kitty. For a written transcript of this conversation click here. Ross's Action Items: 1) The first thing is you can run. So you can go to runforwhat.net and get more information about the offices that are available in your community. 2) The second thing you can do is volunteer either for a candidate or just to have one on one conversations and be a mentor for somebody who's thinking about running for office or currently running for office. You can go to runforsomething.net to find those opportunities. 3) Make a contribution. Resources mentioned in this episode: Their strategic plan (it's really good and fun to read or listen to!). Russia gave Ukrainian forces in Mariupol an ultimatum earlier this week: surrender or die.
