A man who has played rugby at the highest level, Deacon is proof that diverse interests and pursuits provides a robust platform for success in all areas of life. Having played nearly 70 caps for the mighty Waikato Chiefs, Deacon left NZ for Wales where he played a whopping 154 times for the Llanelli Scarlets. It was from here he was selected to represent and captain the Fijian national team at the 2011 Rugby World Cup! Playwright Owen Thomas joins Ciaran on this week's episode of 'In Lockdown With...' Owen had a 20 year career in teaching before embarking on a career as a playwright. Owen has worked extensively with actor/director Gareth John Bale, collaborating on 'Richard Parker,' 'Grav,' and Owen's latest play 'Carwyn.' 'Grav was recently adapted for the screen, and broadcast by S4C in autumn 2021. Owen's play 'Carwyn,' which focuses on the life of Wales and Llanelli Scarlets rugby coach Carwyn James opened at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven last week, and will be embarking on a tour of Wales. Here Ciaran finds out more about Owen's career so far.

Sir Ian McGeechan won thirty-two caps, playing at fly-half and centre, and captained the team nine times. Sir Ian, as a player, toured with the British and Irish Lions in both 1974 and 1977.Sir Ian was the British and Irish Lions Head Coach in 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2009. In 2005 he coached the midweek side on the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand on the invitation of Sir Clive Woodward. On the international stage, Sir Ian also won the 1990 Grand Slam with Scotland. Domestically, Sir Ian became the Director of Rugby at London Wasps in 2005, and led his team to the Powergen Anglo-Welsh Cup title, beating Llanelli Scarlets in the final at Twickenham. In his second season, London Wasps claimed the Heineken Cup and in his third season, they lifted the Premiership cup.In 2010 Sir Ian joined the coaching staff at Gloucester as an advisor to Head Coach Bryan Redpath and his coaching team, and in 2010 he moved to local rivals Bath Rugby as performance director.Taking over as the director of rugby at Bath in 2011, the following year Ian was appointed executive chairman of Leeds Carnegie.Ian was knighted in the 2010 New Years’ Honours List for his services to rugby, and received an OBE in 1990.

When you speak to Phil you can see and hear the passion in his voice for the game he loves.Having spent all his playing career with his beloved Llanelli, he won the Welsh Cup five times, skippering the club for a number of seasons.He earned 46 caps for Wales in the back five of the scrum, sharing in the Five Nations title triumph of 1994.As a coach, one of his most notable achievement was with Leeds between 1996 and 2006, where he took them from division 4 through to the English premiership and he’s also had spells with the Scarlets, Cardiff Blues, Worcester, RGC, Wales U20s and Namibia where he saw two world cupsAlthough still involved in coaching he also runs a consultancy company specialising in leadership and coaching. Alix is a former Welsh rugby union footballer, who played at Number eight or flanker and was captain for the 2009 season at Brive in the French Top 14, having signed from the Llanelli Scarlets in 2008. Popham has also played for Wales, earning 33 caps and not forgetting, he is the founder & CEO of HUB XV. Before moving up to the full Welsh squad, Popham captained the Wales Under-21 team and played for Wales 'A'. He moved from Leeds Tykes to the Scarlets in the summer of 2005. During his time at Leeds he helped them win the 2004–05 Powergen Cup, the final of which he started. He made his international debut for Wales in June 2003 against Australia. He was also capped another three times before being included in Wales' 2003 Rugby World Cup squad. He played two matches during the tournament. The following season he played in the 2004 Six Nations Championship, as well as being capped against South Africa in June, and against Japan in November. He played two internationals in 2005, and was capped five times in 2006, in the Six Nations, and against Romania in June. He is well known for his block-busting tackles, including a tackle on Joe Maddock in a Powergen Cup semi-final against Bath in the 2005–06 season. The centre broke through the Llanelli line, and Popham knocked him side-on, knocking the ball out of Maddock's hands in the process. In his next appearance, London Wasps flanker Johnny O'Connor was knocked out after he ran into Popham's chest. Connacht defeated the Llanelli Scarlets 14-8 in the Guinness Pro 12 on Saturday night to remain in the top six and just five points off first place heading into December. It was win number six for the season, they've already matched last season's total of six wins and they still have 13 games to play in the 2014/15 campaign. This week's podcast crew include Alan Deegan and William Davies who take you through the game itself and afterwards Dave Finn joins host Rob Murphy for the post game discussion.
