In this week's mini documentary I headed to Bordeaux to watch my Union Bordeaux-Begles (UBB) take on my team the Scarlets with a question: who is the most exciting rugby team in the world? I combine my experience at the stadium with some deep underlying stats to argue why I think UBB are the most exciting team in rugby. I compare them to Toulouse and, most importantly, I explain why Matthieu Jalibert is the most exciting player in the most exciting team. This rugby trip to Bordeaux was made during December 2025 for a Champions Cup match between UBB and the Scarlets. Gareth Rhys Owen, Lauren Salter and Cennydd Davies reflect on the opening weekend of European rugby with the return of the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup. Ospreys' comeback win over Connacht avoided a Welsh whitewash in Europe with Cardiff, Dragons and Scarlets all suffering defeat.
In this episode we review the game against Scarlets. It looked like we were cruising at 12-0 up with more points to come but the home side had other ideas and put in a proper shift to take us to the wire.We discuss the reasons why this might have happened as well as hear the thoughts of some listeners. Equally as importantly the game marked the first BBTG road trip of the season so we also review activities that took place off the pitch and as well as on it. Suffice to say we tried to squeeze as much out of Llanelli as we could and had a thoroughly good time despite the weather, the lack of any discernable taxi infrastructure and a poor decision to go to the Red Cow.We briefly look forward to the next game against Section Paloise or 'Pau' as they are also known (although we also hope to get more insight next week with a special 'edu-pod' on Wednesday) and finish off by making a spirited defence of the claim by some loyal listeners that we have sold our souls to the devil for the price of a bobble hat.All this and more with Pete, Lee and Miles live from the Bristol Beer Factory Taproom.Let us know what you think!
In this week's Rugby Pod, the lads wrap up the Quilter Nations Series before diving head-first into the return of domestic rugby, with big Premiership and URC results to get stuck into. This week on The Attacking Scrum, Ged is joined by top Welsh rugby writer Seimon Williams to break down the end of the WRU's consultation period and the headline decision that one of Wales's professional regions will be cut. Is it really a shootout between the Scarlets and the Ospreys, or is there more going on behind the scenes? Ged and Seimon dig into what the decision means for the regional game, the national team, and the long-term sustainability of Welsh rugby. They also explore the development pathway crisis: will a centralised national academy nurture elite talent and bridge the gap between school, semi-pro, and regional rugby? With funding pressures mounting and squads thinning, can the WRU find a model that actually develops players rather than losing them abroad? From the future of West Wales rugby to the wider vision for player development in Wales, this episode asks whether cutting a region will really fix anything — or just make the challenges even greater. Lauren is back on the pod fresh from her honeymoon to give us the lowdown on the big news in Wales as the WRU announce they will be cutting one region. Gareth Rhys Owen and Matt Lloyd explain the Welsh Rugby Union's latest proposals for structural change as they consider halving the number of regions in Wales. The governing body says it's entering a formal consultation with the Professional Rugby Board (PRB) and could reduce the number of regions to three or even two. In a statement, the WRU said the current system is failing and is unsustainable, having already confirmed it does not intend to continue equally funding four professional teams in the men's game. Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets are the four current sides, with the WRU saying it wants a "more radical" strategy to be completed by October.
