Today we're delighted to welcome the British and Irish Lions CEO Ben Calveley to the show. The Lions are one of the most iconic institutions in sport. Made up of players from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, this team which tours once every four years is the pinnacle of many a rugby player's career. In just a few weeks, the team will begin its tour of Australia, trying to win a series for only the third time in the last 30 years. This highlights how difficult it actually is for the Lions to be successful. There are few things more difficult than winning away in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. But what is it that makes the Lions so revered? How do the players turn off rivalry to become the ultimate team for a few short weeks. As described by the Lions themselves which perfectly sums it up, this history is a testament to the power of unity, where rivalries are set aside in pursuit of rugby excellence. This is the real Lions brought to you by the man in charge of the whole legacy. We're delighted to welcome Ben to the Business of Sport. On today's show we discuss: Sculpted in History: When was the Lions formed and how has it shaped the most unique team in rugby, maybe even in sport? What does it mean to be a part of the Lions; from inclusion as player to the coaching staff taking on the challenge. Who has the advantage? The balance between putting together the strongest team from four great rugby nations and playing away from home. Why has success been so hard to come by and what have winning teams been able to harness? Business of The Lions: Behind the history, legacy and honour lies a business that needs to be delivering more than once every four years. How does the organisation make money? From broadcast to sponsorship to ticketing; the numbers behind the Lions. Can The Lions make themselves less financially dependent on the tour and diversify their risk profile to ensure the business is not over exposed? How do sponsorships work and why does Ben think their partners are so keen to align themselves with the team? This is a profitable organisation! What could other sports organisations pick up from the value created around the team? The Future: A historic organisation must leverage its legacy while continuing to innovate. What are the Lions doing to ensure they remain at the front of the attention economy? The introduction of the Women's Tour and what that does for both rugby and the brand. Would the team ever play a series in a location other than Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa? The modern media environment has created an era of sports documentaries, but how were the Lions at the front of this movement? Creating an event out of the squad announcement; how a day at the O2 will create an F1 car launch style buzz around one of the most exciting aspects of any Lions tour.
Today's conversation is with Huw Jones, Glasgow Warriors & Scottish international rugby star. You may know him nowadays as one of the most exciting outside centres in world rugby, but we go back way before that to understand his journey from gap year teacher in Cape Town to Test match try-scorer. This week on The KOKO Show the boys regroup after a big ANZAC Weekend and they reflect on all the magnificent footy that was played in round 11 of the Superb Rugby, whilst also looking forward to the final five weeks of the season and predicting which team will come out on top. In a weekend where the Brumbies had a stumble, the Reds caught fire, the Savea brothers kicked ass and the Chiefs still reigned supreme, the lads had their work cut out for them, as they tried to make sense of this topsy turvy 2025 season. To round out this robust rugby recap the lads debuted a new segment called ‘The Transfer Tracker', where the boys gave their immediate reactions and dissections to all of the big player moves both in Australian Rugby and around the world. That's right the KOKO Crew is giving you a big old ‘RA RA' wrap to fill up your Ozempic tainted tummies and of course, we always wash it down with a pint of our finest ice cold shit talk. Plus, Ladies and Gents that is not all, to add some much needed credibility to this rumbling bumbling poor excuse of a podcast, the lads enlisted the help of the best number 10 in Australia. No, it isn't Noah Lolesio, nor is it Lawson Creighton and we couldn't make Tommy Lynagh's monetary deal, so in reflection we got what we got. Nonetheless please welcome the hairiest handler of balls in the business, it is the one and only Mr Ben Donaldson. Moreover, Benny takes us through why the Force are fighting for every inch in 2025, what he really thinks of Carlo Tizzano and how excited he is about hopefully taking on the British and Irish Lions this year. So sit back, relax, elevate your gout riddled feet, peel a couple of leftover choccy eggs and suck back on an ice cold Crown Lager. As any Statistician on a juicy consulting wage from the NRL will tell you, records are made to be invented, and it's with this gusto that our heroes grapple with yet another glorious 'crowd record' declaration issued from Pyongyang. That, alongside the scheduling of a double header to take on the British and Irish Lions tour opener, assures us all the leadership coming from HQ remains- as ever- supreme. The game is feeling a bit 1998 at the moment, with unlimited tackles AND the reinstated presence of the Bears. A reverent look at Bears past unfolds, as our grizzled heroes pontificate their wisdom, while subtly referencing Wikipedia articles.Expansion is on the mind and in the gullet, from PNG to Perth, and next (we're pretty sure) the announcement of a team for the league loving province of Daugavpils in Latvia.Forward passes, high tackles, sin bins and tipping shit shows. Some harsh but fair calls on QLD Origin selections, while Johnny invites fellow male model James O'Connor back into the Wallaby fold- only to be met by a wall of disinterest from Joel, who is pretty sure no one would really bat an eyelid if he became an All Black. Our heroes also briefly mention a few Super rugby scores, amid wide eyed realisations they probably need to watch the games before talking about them. And so, we leave you with an ode to the game:As the whistle blows, and blows and blows and blowsThe spectacle known as rugby league gets more on the nose nose noseBut lets not stop PVL and co from making it grow grow growFrom Perth to Port Moresby...soon we'll have more teams than players to put on a show show show

He's known for focus, discipline, and making "the main thing the main thing."Dublin Test Match Logistics:Coordinated calendar adjustments across rugby unions made it possible. The match will help fans who can't travel see the Lions live, offer commercial benefits, and serve as a critical pre-tour performance fixture.Roadmap to the 2025 Tour:Key milestones include announcing assistant coaches, selecting the squad, and gradually building public engagement. The Lions aim to keep momentum going across a full two-year lead-up to the tour.Overall, the episode offers a mix of nostalgia, strategic insight, and excitement for the Lions' future—blending tradition with modern sports business savvy. This week on The Rugby Pod, we've got a very special guest – we're joined by one of the most decorated and toughest coaches in either code of rugby, the legendary Shaun Edwards OBE. From his Wales Grand Slam-winning years to building France's defensive juggernaut, Shaun gives us an insight into what makes him one of the sharpest minds in the game. Dan Biggar gets stuck in with his old coach, reminiscing about their first meeting in Wales camp, Shaun's no-nonsense approach, and his famous defence from his 12 years with Wales. The lads also dive into his move to France, the World Cup heartbreak, and what's next for Les Bleus heading into the Six Nations. Plus, we get Shaun's take on Antoine Dupont, his coaching philosophy, and whether he fancies another shot at international head coaching… or even a return to the British & Irish Lions.
