Former Ireland and Leinster Rugby legend Devin Toner joins me for a conversation about life pre, during and post professional rugby.   Devin gives great insights into the highs and lows of an impressive career that seen him become the all time record caps holder with Leinster rugby, with an impressive 280 caps.  With the highs including a Grand Slam win, 2 additional Six Nations titles and 4 European Champions Cups (formerly The Heineken Cup). And the lows including being left out of Ireland's World Cup squad in 2019, only a year after his best ever season winning both the Grand Slam with Ireland and the European Champions Cup with Leinster.  Devin also discusses life after rugby and the reality of having to start a completely new career in your mid 30's. And the exciting food & beverage businesses he is now involved with as an investor.  If you are a rugby fan or have an interest in entrepreneurship + investing this episode will have you engaged from start to finish.

Dave Kearney, a product of the highly regarded Leinster academy, came through the rigorous selection process and made his debut for Leinster in 2009 having starred for the Ireland U20s that season. With the family having a strong history in Irish sport Dave credits an early Gaelic football career with Cooley Kickhams in Louth as contributing factor for his undoubted skill set within rugby. He went on to establish himself as a pivotal member of the Leinster squad and has gone on to make over 100 caps for his native province. Fearless under the high ball and the finishers instinct, Dave was first called into the Ireland squad in 2013, making his debut v Samoa and scored 2 tries. His decision making under pressure saw him bypass alot of Irish wings and he quickly became a permanent fixture at both club and country. Highly regarded by Joe Schmidt, he was an ever present in the 2014 Six nations Championship winning team, playing every minute alongside his brother Rob and Jamie Heaslip. He was also member of the Ireland World Cup squad in 2015.His consistency and ability to play anywhere across the back three, has been a key attribute to his success as a rugby player as well as his unselfish team first attitude. He has scored over 25 tries for Leinster and 4 for Ireland in a 17 cap career to date with his last cap coming in November 2017 v Fiji. With success breeding success breeding success he has won the Pro 14 on 3 occasions as well as the Heineken Cup and Six Nations Championship, where he had made a significant impact with his consistent fielding and ability to read defences and capitalise on any errors with his attacking acumen. A diligent and disciplined trainer and popular squad member, Dave has a lot to offer both on and off the pitch and has also concluded a degree in Sponsorship and Brand Management. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/portraitsofclongowes/message

What does it mean to be an explorer? What are the sacrifices one must take? What are the benefits of putting yourself through such hard physical challenges? This week we speak to Damian Browne, an extreme adventurer, peak performance athlete and International keynote speaker from Galway, Ireland. For the last 25 years Damian has pursued his human potential, relentlessly pushing his body & mind to their perceived limits; forging himself & his character in what he deems “a crucible life”. During a 16-year career as a professional rugby player, Damian donned the colours of some of rugby's European elite, including Northampton Saints & Leinster; where he won club rugby's biggest prize, The Heineken Cup. Since retirement from professional rugby, Damian has become one of the World's foremost extreme adventurers; undertaking some of the most demanding physical and mental challenges on the planet, including the 257km Sahara Desert ultra marathon, The Marathon des Sables, climbed 5 of the 7 Summits, a renowned mountaineering feat & most recently created history by becoming the first person ever to row from New York City to Galway, taking 112 days and in the process become one of only a handful of people to have rowed the Atlantic in both directions.Damian's drive to explore his physical & mental limits is not exclusive to ultra endurance events and he is a multi-time Irish indoor rowing champion, holding all-time, all-category records for the 500m and 1000m distance. We were lucky to have had Damian in the studio with us for this episode, a brilliant and deep character, we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did.Lots of love,Dave & Steve Hosted on Acast. Tim Stimpson, former England and British & Irish Lions rugby player, has been described as one of the most successful players of his generation. He was instrumental in helping the Leicester Tigers win the Premiership 4 times in a row, as well as back-to-back Heineken Cup's, and at the time, became the Premierships leading points scorer. What is evident when talking with Tim is his obvious passion for the game of rugby and his love of team. So, it was fascinating to chat with him about the transition out of the game into 'normal life' and the journey he has been on for the past 15 years as he has had to learn to pay attention to his own happiness and find new ways of being a husband, father and man. Thanks Tim for your honesty and willingness to share the ups and downs of life with me!Photo Credit: ESPN

Today we're joined by Damian Browne, a man who had an incredible rugby career including winning the Heineken Cup with Leinster, but has made a name for himself as an extreme adventurer. We talk to him merely a couple weeks after completing his most incredible expedition to date, when he became the first man in history to row the Atlantic Ocean solo from New York to Ireland. After losing his partner at sea with a suspected blood clot only 2 weeks into the row, Damian decided to complete the task by himself and therefore spent the next 95 days all alone at sea, with no human company, no one to talk to, just the storms of the ocean and his mind to keep him company. Rowing for over 12 hours a day non stop and having no human company for that long can break the strongest of men and when he had to spend 3 days locked into his capsized row boat in a deadly storm and his cabin started to flood, he thought it could be the end of his life.
