This episode takes us to a graveyard for Halloween and explores one of the most canonical poems in the English language, poised between two huge eras of poetry as it meditates on how "the paths of glory lead but to the grave." The whole poem can be found below. The image is of Thomas Gray's monument in Stoke Poges, inscribed with his elegy. Photo by UKgeofan at English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10552507 For more on Thomas Gray, see The Poetry Foundation (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/thomas-gray). Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard By Thomas Gray The curfew tolls the knell of parting day, The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea, The plowman homeward plods his weary way, And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Now fades the glimm'ring landscape on the sight, And all the air a solemn stillness holds, Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight, And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds; Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tow'r The moping owl does to the moon complain Of such, as wand'ring near her secret bow'r, Molest her ancient solitary reign. Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade, Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap, Each in his narrow cell for ever laid, The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep. The breezy call of incense-breathing Morn, The swallow twitt'ring from the straw-built shed, The cock's shrill clarion, or the echoing horn, No more shall rouse them from their lowly bed. For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn, Or busy housewife ply her evening care: No children run to lisp their sire's return, Or climb his knees the envied kiss to share. Oft did the harvest to their sickle yield, Their furrow oft the stubborn glebe has broke; How jocund did they drive their team afield! How bow'd the woods beneath their sturdy stroke! Let not Ambition mock their useful toil, Their homely joys, and destiny obscure; Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful smile The short and simple annals of the poor. The boast of heraldry, the pomp of pow'r, And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave, Awaits alike th' inevitable hour. The paths of glory lead but to the grave. Nor you, ye proud, impute to these the fault, If Mem'ry o'er their tomb no trophies raise, Where thro' the long-drawn aisle and fretted vault The pealing anthem swells the note of praise. Can storied urn or animated bust Back to its mansion call the fleeting breath? Can Honour's voice provoke the silent dust, Or Flatt'ry soothe the dull cold ear of Death? Perhaps in this neglected spot is laid Some heart once pregnant with celestial fire; Hands, that the rod of empire might have sway'd, Or wak'd to ecstasy the living lyre. But Knowledge to their eyes her ample page Rich with the spoils of time did ne'er unroll; Chill Penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul. Full many a gem of purest ray serene, The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flow'r is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air. Some village-Hampden, that with dauntless breast The little tyrant of his fields withstood; Some mute inglorious Milton here may rest, Some Cromwell guiltless of his country's blood. Th' applause of list'ning senates to command, The threats of pain and ruin to despise, To scatter plenty o'er a smiling land, And read their hist'ry in a nation's eyes, Their lot forbade: nor circumscrib'd alone Their growing virtues, but their crimes confin'd; Forbade to wade through slaughter to a throne, And shut the gates of mercy on mankind, The struggling pangs of conscious truth to hide, To quench the blushes of ingenuous shame, Or heap the shrine of Luxury and Pride With incense kindled at the Muse's flame. Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife, Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray; Along the cool sequester'd vale of life They kept the noiseless tenor of their way. Yet ev'n these bones from insult to protect, Some frail memorial still erected nigh, With uncouth rhymes and shapeless sculpture deck'd, Implores the passing tribute of a sigh. Their name, their years, spelt by th' unletter'd muse, The place of fame and elegy supply: And many a holy text around she strews, That teach the rustic moralist to die. For who to dumb Forgetfulness a prey, This pleasing anxious being e'er resign'd, Left the warm precincts of the cheerful day, Nor cast one longing, ling'ring look behind? On some fond breast the parting soul relies, Some pious drops the closing eye requires; Ev'n from the tomb the voice of Nature cries, Ev'n in our ashes live their wonted fires. For thee, who mindful of th' unhonour'd Dead Dost in these lines their artless tale relate; If chance, by lonely contemplation led, Some kindred spirit shall inquire thy fate, Haply some hoary-headed swain may say, "Oft have we seen him at the peep of dawn Brushing with hasty steps the dews away To meet the sun upon the upland lawn. "There at the foot of yonder nodding beech That wreathes its old fantastic roots so high, His listless length at noontide would he stretch, And pore upon the brook that babbles by. "Hard by yon wood, now smiling as in scorn, Mutt'ring his wayward fancies he would rove, Now drooping, woeful wan, like one forlorn, Or craz'd with care, or cross'd in hopeless love. "One morn I miss'd him on the custom'd hill, Along the heath and near his fav'rite tree; Another came; nor yet beside the rill, Nor up the lawn, nor at the wood was he; "The next with dirges due in sad array Slow thro' the church-way path we saw him borne. Approach and read (for thou canst read) the lay, Grav'd on the stone beneath yon aged thorn." THE EPITAPH Here rests his head upon the lap of Earth A youth to Fortune and to Fame unknown. Fair Science frown'd not on his humble birth, And Melancholy mark'd him for her own. Large was his bounty, and his soul sincere, Heav'n did a recompense as largely send: He gave to Mis'ry all he had, a tear, He gain'd from Heav'n ('twas all he wish'd) a friend. No farther seek his merits to disclose, Or draw his frailties from their dread abode, (There they alike in trembling hope repose) The bosom of his Father and his God.

Welcome dear listener to First State Kopites. The podcast of the Premier League Champions. We are going to review Chelsea last Saturday, with the benefit of few days distance. I'm Paul and today I am joined by Daz and Sean. Away at Chelsea - xG 1.0 (0.11 first half) to 1.95 (0.64). 4 big chances to their 2.Immediate reaction vs. the chance to watch it again. How different were the narratives versus what actually happened:Start well - Gakpo, Bradley, Kerkez, Isak, Szobo, Salah all look brightGoal 15th - VVD covering Malo Gusto, after Macca has been tricked by Caicedo. Fluidity was affected by the goal. Also, just an incredible strike by CaicedoWe need to realize that Georgi is left footed! Ball gets turned over after he tries to kick with his right.Big chance for Szobo from Cody at 19; Isak header from Salah at 44, 46 big chance for Salah, after Gakpo, Wirtz combo. 53 - Salah blazes over in 4 on 4 - Isak and Gakpo in space. 65 - Isak is free when Salah shoots over.First really dangerous moment from Chelsea - Fernandes header on 80. 84 - 2 shots and decent saves from Marmadashvili. A pummelling someone said. 91 Fernandez header. Robbo less solid defensively?Last 10, more chaotic, though the main danger came from the one chance where Endo and Robbo could have done much better. We also have a couple of chances at the end (Szobo and Jones). Some players seemed focused on winning others not sure - Endo left wingThemes from elsewhere:Much chat about an overload on the left - not much evidence of it, save the Bradley yellow. Gakpo makes us look relatively solid on the left.Subs - Curtis, Andy Robbo. Help moving forward. We also moved Szobbo to RB and Grav to CB. But their subs gave them some energy especially in the last 10VVD brought up the challenge they are facing managing the grief of Diogo's passing.Chelsea hate segment:Cole Palmer in a space suit? He is typical Chelsea, just the worstCucurella - what a Sh*tLavia (who has played about 3 games) tries to whip up the crowdAnthony Taylor watch - loves to kill our momentum8th minute - imagined foul by Konate kills our momentum24 - Garnacho goes down without contact 26 - Salah non-foul30 - Caicedo challenge on Dom, nasty, no card of course34 - Bradley - yellow for Cucurella goes down with some contact39 - Garnacho dive…. 45 goes down again without contact73 - hands in Isak's face 79 - Diabolical yellow on Szobo for more Cucurella nonsense82 - Foul by Malo Gusto on Gakpo - not given87 - gives a soft foul against Salah - guess who goes down (clue Garnacho has already gone off)5th best team in the league? We'll be back with a preview of the Manchester United game in quite short order. But no need for a last minute winner.Grealish - under appreciated genius or the most professional diver of allRyan Gravenberch… Macca, Kerkez10 - Ryan great finish just after Ndiaye falls over16 - Salah almost24 - Gakpo/Salah break27 - Dewsbury-Hall - big chance?29 - Macca - Grav - Ekitike - awesome goal36 - Beto - big chance?46 - Guehye - big chance56 - chance for Mo58 - slow to pick up Gueye for the goal70 - Wirtz almost72 - Konate header blocked74 - Szobo free kickBottom line we beat the Blues and we pissed off Jack GrealishFinal thought - Southampton Carabao Cup rotationWon't be seeing VVD, Ryan, Dominic and Ibou….Boring (Incorrect) football narratives #neededWhy did they sign Hugo Ekitike?Always talk about Liverpool's spendingArsenal have the best depth in the leagueWe will be back with a Palace and Galatasaray preview. In this episode of "Global Communicator," we speak about North Macedonia, a country in the Western Balkans characterized by its rich cultural, historical, and natural assets. Hosted by Marco, the episode features guests Alexander Bogojevski, a local expert in tourism, and Matthias, an Austrian Embassy representative and expatriate living in Skopje. They delve into what makes North Macedonia an attractive destination and an amazing place to live.Key Points:Geographical and Historical Context:North Macedonia, previously part of the former Yugoslavia, gained independence in 1991. The name North Macedonia was adopted after a diplomatic agreement with Greece in 2018 due to historical and geographical claims.Tourism Potential and Attractions:The country is highlighted for its natural beauty and potential in adventure tourism. It boasts numerous national parks, mountainous terrain ideal for hiking and winter sports, and opportunities for paragliding over its diverse landscape.Ohrid and Prespa lakes, noted for their serene natural settings and pristine waters, are key attractions. Ohrid is known for its cultural heritage and as a site for quiet exploration devoid of mass tourism.Cultural Richness:Skopje, the capital, offers a mix of history and modernity with its ancient bazaars, unique architecture, and the renowned statues like that of Alexander the Great. The city is a hub of cultural and social activity, with varied dining options reflecting the rich culinary heritage of the region.Hospitality and Local Interactions:Macedonians are described as hospitable and friendly, advocating for visitors to explore freely and seek assistance without hesitation. The warmth of the people adds significantly to the travel experience.Cuisine and Dining:The local cuisine is emphasized, with recommendations to try traditional dishes such as Tavče Gravče, Shopska salad, and various flavors of Rakija (a regional brandy). The dining experience in North Macedonia is enhanced by the affordability and quality of local food and wine.Challenges and Safety:Safety is generally not a concern, with North Macedonia being a welcoming place despite its past political and ethnic tensions. Visitors are cautioned about standard precautions like watching out for pickpockets and navigating local transport fare fairly.Undiscovered Treasures and Future Prospects:The country holds numerous secret spots like deserted beaches on Ohrid Lake and historical sites such as Roman spas, offering unique and less crowded experiences.Alexander and Matthias convey an optimistic vision for North Macedonia, noting its untapped potential in tourism and the ongoing efforts for development. Listeners are encouraged to visit soon, with the understanding that the current unspoiled and secluded nature of many attractions may not remain as tourism progresses. The episode concludes with a local goodbye from Alexander, signifying the cultural authenticity and personal touch characteristic of the podcast.

Increasingly in demand as a soloist with orchestras and brass bands alike, Brittany balances an intensive performance career with her role as a sought-after educator and newly appointed Assistant Professor of Trombone at the renowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. As a serial collaborator and commissioner of composers, Brittany is a musical explorer creating new repertoire for her instrument from some of today's most compelling voices, and true ambassador in expanding recognition for the trombone as a powerful solo voice for today. A prizewinner in numerous other competitions, she received the coveted John Clark Award upon graduation from the Manhattan School of Music for outstanding accomplishment in brass performance. For six seasons, Brittany was the Principal Trombone of the Detroit Opera Orchestra at the Detroit Opera House. An active presence in the global trombone community, Brittany's performances for the current and past seasons include Argentina's Trombonanza, Portugal's Gravíssimo Festival, as well as appearances in Japan and Korea. As an advocate for new music, Brittany has commissioned and performed several new pieces for the trombone, including acclaimed composer Reena Esmail's major Sonata for Trombone and Piano, which she commissioned for her Astral Artists recital in Philadelphia. Brittany gave the premiere of the orchestrated version of Martin Kennedy's Theme and Variations for Trombone and Orchestra with the BGSU Philharmonia under the direction of Dr. Emily Brown. She also recorded the work with the BGSU Philharmonia, which was recently released on the Albany Records label. Other recent projects include collaborations with composers Inez McComas, Adam Har-zvi, and David Miller. Her debut solo album Dark Horse features works by Samuel Adler, Tony Plog, Reena Esmail, Shawn Davern, and the album's pianist, Thomas Weaver. A native of Park Ridge, Illinois, Brittany earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University, where she received the Brass Department Award.
