The Lammy plan to eliminate half of U.K. criminal jury trials has provoked a rebellion among many lawmakers. Recent Palestine Action cases highlight the jury's moral role, with several “perverse verdicts” acquitting activists despite clear evidence. Yet those charged with the lesser offence of “supporting” PA have been denied a jury trial and the chance of acquittal.Compared with U.S. constitutional protections, including impartial juries, vicinage rules, challenges to biased pools, and post‑trial juror inquiry—the U.K. system appears increasingly problematic. In this lecture, Professor Clive Stafford Smith makes the case for stronger jury protections.This lecture was recorded by Clive Stafford Smith on the 17th of September 2026Clive Stafford Smith JD OBE is a dual UK-US national, the founder and director of the Justice League a non-profit human rights training centre focused on fostering the next generation of advocates. He was the Senior Prefect at Radley College, where he studied maths and science; then a Morehead Scholar at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), where he took a degree in Politics; and a Stone Merit Scholar each of his three years at Columbia Law School, graduating in 1984. He previously founded and directed the legal action charities Louisiana Capital Assistance Center (1993 in New Orleans) and Reprieve (1999 in London). Since 1984 he has tried many capital cases, and helped to represent over 400 people facing execution in the US and elsewhere. He also brought the first challenge to Guantánamo Bay, where he has secured the release of 87 detainees, and continues to assist the remaining 15. In all five of the cases he has helped bring to the U.S. Supreme Court the petitioner has prevailed. He has recently taken on the case of Aafia Siddiqui, the woman who has most suffered from the US rendition-to-torture program – abducted with her three children. He continues to work on capital cases in the US, including a Post-Mortem Project where he is investigating the claims of innocence of 184 people executed since 1977.Clive has published a number of books including Bad Men (2008, describing work in Guantánamo) and Injustice (2012, on the capital case of Kris Maharaj), both of which were short-listed for the Orwell Prize; and most recently The Far Side of the Moon (2023), deconstructing the parallel lives of his father and a client Larry Lonchar, both of whom were labelled Bipolar. He has many other publications, including manuals for the defence of capital cases, and law review articles about aspects of capital defence. He has worked on many films and documentaries, starting with Fourteen Days In May (1987), recently ranked as one of the top BBC documentaries of all time. While continuing his litigation practice, Clive teaches part time at Bristol Law School as well as running a summer programme for 35 students in Dorset, his home. He has received all kinds of awards in recognition of his work, including an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II for “services to humanity” in 2000. He has been a member of the Louisiana State Bar since 1984. Piše Tatjana Pregl Kobe, bereta Ajda Sokler in Bernard Stramič. Druga pesniška zbirka akademskega slikarja in pesnika Silvestra Plotajsa Sicoeja ima naslov moje srce je čisto umazano. Ker sem pesmi, nastale od marca 1997 do konca leta 2008 prvič prebirala v rokopisu že pred skoraj dvajsetimi leti, bi lahko zapisala, da je pred mano nova stara zbirka poezije. Besedna igra se malce nanaša na protislovnost v naslovu zbirke, s katero avtor svoje srce opiše kot čisto umazano. Že tu se kaže njegova dvojnost v načinu ustvarjanja: v nasprotju s spontanimi pesniškimi zapisi izpostavlja povsem premišljen naslov kot vrzel, skozi katero naj pride bralec do vsebinskega središča njegove pesniške zbirke. Silvester Plotajs Sicoe je predvsem priznan akademski slikar, pri čemer besede in barve v njegovem ustvarjanju izhajajo iz istega umetniškega jedra. S spontanim nanašanjem barv in oblik na belino platna pripoveduje zgodbe, ki nastajajo pred njegovimi očmi in ekspresivno preoblikovane rastejo iz njegove notranjosti, tako kot z vijuganjem črt na belini papirja piše črke in besede pesmi, ki sočasno zorijo v njem. Obe izreki, vizualna in besedna, se napajata v istem izviru: v pesmi vdihuje barve, v slike vpenja besede. Že v prvi pesniški zbirki Hiša srca, ki je izšla pred skoraj tridesetimi leti, je bila večina njegovih pesmi ljubezenskih, namenjenih Sari, ljubici, ženi, vili, angelu – njegovi muzi. V spremnem besedilu Pesemski zapisi pod lastne slike je literarna kritičarka Tea Štoka že leta 1998 zapisala, da so pesmi na slikah »sproščene, polne mladostnega zagona, svetlobe in živih, pristnih čustev, predvsem občudovanja in očaranosti nad čudežem ljubezni in pripadnosti«. Pri pripravi Plotajsovih del za razstavo Poetika v Koroški galeriji likovnih umetnosti sem leta 2008 prebirala rokopisno zbirko pesmi Kaktus, da bi razumela slike, danes imam v roki pesniško zbirko moje srce je čisto umazano, ki jo berem v atraktivno zasnovani knjižni obliki, opremljeni in oblikovani tako, da z mislimi nisem daleč od pesnikovih vizualnih podob. Za Plotajsa so značilne slike, polne pisanih barv in igrivih podob, pa tudi besed in verzov, ki jih piše na platno. Ob branju njegovih pesmi pa se zdi, da so tako otipljivo žive, kot bi zrli na njegove izslikane podobe. Njegove pesmi niso nič drugačne od slik, ki so tako silovito samosvoje, pritegnejo z močjo natrpanosti in plast za plastjo logično naloženega nereda ter so urejene po zakonih, ki si jih avtor sam določa pri načrtnem upodabljanju razbitosti, raztrganosti in navidezni naključnosti. Tako kot njegova vizualna dela ne sledijo klasičnemu modernističnemu slikarstvu, temveč vsebinsko in formalno ubirajo svojo smer – sam pravi, da je neoekspresionist oziroma pankerski kubist –, tako tudi pesmi ubirajo svojo pot. Ne lirskega ne vizualnega zapisovalca ne zanima svet, skrit pod površjem. Ne slika in ne piše o razpokah v sistemu, o širših družbenih procesih, odnosih moči kapitala in političnih igrah. Njegov svet je neizmerno subtilen, zastoje in praznine, vrzeli in razpoke išče s srcem na dlani. Ljubitelj zgodb, pesnik spontanih nagibov in občudovalec neponovljivega išče vse bolj izginjajočo individualnost, ki se utaplja v množično popularni enakosti. S pesmijo množica očitno razkriva samosvoj odnos do sveta: »čutim množico / divjih src ki se / prerivajo skozi meglo / gozdov … želijo si ljubezni / ki se jim svetlolasa / nasmiha za obzorjem.« V nasprotju s sodobno ljubezensko poezijo, ki pogosto raziskuje telesnost, strast, celo brutalno neposrednost v radikalni telesni liriki, je v Plotajsovih pesmih ljubezen sublimna. V klasičnem slovenskem intimizmu se v ljubezen pogosto prikradejo skepticizem, ironija, minljivost in bivanjska tesnoba, ta poezija pa ohranja skoraj sakralno čistost. Kjer drugi pesniki v ljubezenskem odnosu vidijo odtujenost ali nezmožnost popolnega zlitja dveh svetov, Plotajs vztraja pri veri v odrešujočo moč ljubezni. Njegov pristop ni analitičen ali globoko razumsko dvomljiv, temveč predan in občudujoč. Ljubezen razume kot edini svetli in sveti prostor v razrvanosti kriznih žarišč, vojn, ekoloških katastrof in lažnih novic, pri tem pa kot lirski subjekt ne zapada v težko filozofsko premišljevanje. Njegova metafizika je preprosta, izkušnja ljubezni pa neposredna in očiščena balasta vsakdanjega sveta, politike ali kapitala. Ženska zanj ni le telesno bitje, ampak angel in tudi muza. Ta poezija se tako bolj nagiba k tradiciji novoromantičnega idealiziranja, kjer je ljubljena oseba ideal in vir trajne svetlobe, ne le objekt trenutne strasti, kjer pesmi dišijo po resničnosti, obarvani z določenim razpoloženjem, vznemirjenjem in čustvenostjo. Medtem ko se velik del sodobne poezije odziva na kaos sveta s fragmentiranostjo, ironijo in angažiranostjo, Plotajsova lirika deluje kot prostor upora z nežnostjo, občudovanjem, pripadnostjo, ljubeznijo. Postane varno zavetje, azil: »na robu vesolja hiša / v njej moje srce / oblečeno v škrlat« (prebujenje) Osredotočenost na mikrosvet dveh ljubljenih oseb, družine in narave ni beg pred realnostjo, temveč zavestna odločitev za edino resničnost, ki je zanj pomembna – za dosledno svetost odnosov: »v rokah držim / otroka / visoko ga dvignem / proti nebu / med prsti na nogah / mi polzi potok / blizu izvira sem / polna luna / osvetljuje / krik po življenju // delam se da sem / posoda za utrip srca / a ne / jaz sem utripajoče / iztrgano srce / z dišečim / srčkom v rokah« (lunine sanje) S poetiko med seboj in svetom, sredi nenehnega informacijskega tornada, Plotajs ustvarja zid, za katerim kot sanjač skriva svojo občutljivo notranjost. Tako kot je bilo spomladi na pregledni razstavi Kako sanjati nazaj v ljubljanski Mestni galeriji na njegovih slikah mogoče prebirati tudi poezijo, se v knjigi pesmi pred bralcem sprehajajo njegove podobe. V zbirki je 118 tipografsko urejenih pesmi brez velikih črk in ločil, nastalih med letoma 1997 in 2009, med katere se na samostojnih straneh včasih vrinejo še štiri pesmi v rokopisu, natisnjene v različnih barvah. Pri tem nikakor ne gre za razbijanje monotonosti, saj je oblikovalka Nataša Šušteršič Plotajs poleg uporabe slikarjevih značilnih barv za tisk besedila in različnih barv papirja prek vse knjige razvrstila tudi njegove podobe: sedem celostranskih, tri prek dveh strani in še deset vinjet med besedili. Kot Plotajs od gledalca vedno zahteva nenehno pozornost, ponuja enako občutje tudi tako dinamično oblikovana knjiga. Poseben čar zgradbe pesniške zbirke sta pesmi zimska za saro v rokopisni obliki z rdečimi črkami, izpisana je na predlistu zbirke, ter na zaključni strani v modrem rokopisu pesem prihodnost: »z očmi prebadam / nebo in zemljo / diham skozi / modro žametno / tišino // … lebdim med sanjami / in prihodnostjo / nimam časa / za preteklost / moja pot vijuga / v svetlobo …« Obe pesmi sta nastali leta 2025 in simbolično napovedujeta nadaljevanje v novi zbirki, ki očitno že nastaja. Slike, ki osupnejo gledalca, saj so po neposrednosti komaj primerljive z današnjimi likovnimi svetovi drugih umetnikov, in nove pesmi Silvestra Plotajsa Sicoeja, ki s sporočilom, da je življenje užitek, slikarstvo in poezija pa strast, delujejo poživljajoče in bodo brez dvoma nov izziv za avtorja, gledalce in bralce.

Obe Arellano shares why Latino church planting and next-generation leadership represent an important opportunity for the Church in the United States. Drawing from more than 20 years of church planting experience, Obe explains the complexity of the Latino and Hispanic church and what it takes to develop culturally relevant, multiplying churches. Obe and Greg Nettle begin by unpacking terminology like Latino, Hispanic, and Brown Church, including why these communities cannot be treated as a single culture. Obe explains the differences across countries, languages, immigration generations, and cultural experiences—and why understanding those differences matters for church leaders. Obe also shares his own journey from becoming a Christian at 17 to planting his first church at 22 and eventually helping develop Exponential Español, a Latino-led multiplication ministry created to provide Spanish-speaking pastors and church planters with resources, relationships, training, and opportunities to pursue multiplication. The conversation explores one of the biggest opportunities facing the Latino church: developing second- and third-generation Latino leaders who can reach both Latino communities and the broader culture around them. Obe describes the Latino church as a "both-and" church—Latino and American, Spanish- and English-speaking, immigrant and native-born, traditional and contemporary. Greg and Obe also discuss the challenge of transitioning leadership from first-generation immigrant leaders to U.S.-born Latino leaders. Rather than preserving one particular cultural expression of church, Obe challenges pastors to remain focused on ensuring that the gospel of Jesus continues to reach the next generation. Today I’d like to share two experiences that I had years ago. While tidying up recently I found a notebook, it was half empty but there was an OBE that was dated 2nd December 2015. I thought I would share it with you today. I put on a theta CD at 5am then let myself drift off. I wake up as I am floating in the air with the familiar fizzing sensation that I enjoy. I make a request to go to the higher dimensions but instead find myself in a building. I walk around noting just how real it all appears. I look at my hands, even my hands seem really physical. (Often in OBEsmy hands change shape or even disappear) The reality of it all is actually quite shocking. I am following a man who seems to know more than I do about where I am. There is another man who seems to be sorting out vegetables, I tell him he is out-of-body and not to waste his time and put his OBE time to good use (but then maybe he is who am I to judge) He mentions the name of a book but I can't remember what he said. I turn to the man I have been following and he tells me there are certain tests you have to pass, barriers preventing entry. At which point I begin to fly, as I fly I come up against barriers made of a type of straw, it is relatively easy to get through. Then I come to a door, I know it leads to a different dimension, I open it and go through. The other side of the door is pretty dark, it is as if I am in an enormous rock concert although everyone is doing their own thing, the atmosphere is quite heavy. There is a guide with me plus a couple of other people. The guide warns us about what we will find here, it is the place of personal demons that we can come face to face with on our own. We walk around to have a look, the people there are not interacting with each other, I suppose you could say ‘they are all playing their own music'. Then suddenly the atmosphere darkens and I look up at a balcony, there I see my own personal demon. It is quite a picture. My demon is in the form of Little Red Riding Hood, a little girl in a red cape, the left side of her chest is gauged out and bare flesh with red blood is visible, then I see she is carrying the wolf exactly where her left side is gauged out. The guide's eyes change to amber to protect us from the demon, it comes towards us but keeps its distance, it tries to get us to approach it, it threw my car keys down near it thinking I will go and pick them up, but I say ‘I don’t need my keys here I’m out-of-body, my keys are in the physical'. In the end I start to speak to it, by now it has changed appearance, it is tall, a male body with a helmet. I don’t remember what I say but then suddenly the demon changes into a nice-looking young woman with long dark hair. I am a bit surprised as it is so sudden and I say ‘Oh you’re a woman.' We talk a bit more but then she gets spooked by something and changes back to the demon who wants to hurt us. I talk to the demon, I can’t remember what I say then the young woman appears again. She tells me she has had problems in her life that she had become addicted to gambling. We hug. I then find myself flying through the air to the edge of a cliff, below is a deep, deep valley with buildings. It is impossible to resist flying into such a deep and wonderful valley, I fly into it. I wake up. When I read this OBE again I did remember it as the image with Little Red Riding Hood with the wolf in her side stuck with me. I don't remember if I had any follow up OBEs or dreams after this but as the woman and I hugged I presume that particular demon has been faced and the situation resolved. It could have been another me from another life, either way the symbolism of Little Red Riding Hood is quite significant, in one explanation the symbolism of the wolf can represent the hidden temptations found in society which in this case would be the gambling. However, symbolism like this can go very deep and can be worth looking into. I don’t believe that we need to know the whole story to heal, although it can be interesting to delve into what our subconscious mind shows us. I believe OBEs can help us face our demons, I was with a guide in the experience so I was always protected, our guides know when we are ready and I don’t believe they would put us in situations which we weren't ready for. When re-reading this experience it does have a rather shamanic is feel to it. In a shamanic journey you travel into the subconscious mind where all our traumas are stored, the subconscious works with symbolism and creates stories so that the body can feel that the situation is resolved. Our so-called demons, our traumas, whatever they may be and from wherever they may come, remain in our energy body and may show up in our physical body at some point. This is why we need to feel the release, talking our way out of our issues is only half the story. In OBEs you get to be part of the story. Here’s another experience that came to mind recently while was discussing some of my experiences with a friend over a cappuccino, when I met a big insect. I personally believe we are being observed by other beings, well wouldn't you if you were an alien, for want of a better word, there's so much going on here on Earth in more ways than we could ever imagine. Who needs a Netflix subscription when you can watch Planet Earth and the Adventures of the Human Race. The reason I believe we are being observed is due to an OBE I had years ago before the internet exploded and all sorts of information became so widely available. At the time, I thought it was an interesting OBE but at the time I really didn't give it much thought. I may even have spoken about it in a podcast episode some time. Anyway at risk of repeating myself I’m going to describe it briefly again. I can't remember the circumstances exactly but never mind, I use the present tense as this serves to remind me that there really is no past or future, it is all present. So here we go. I leave my body and I get the impression that I am on some kind of spaceship, in front of me are several screens all showing different views of the earth. There is a being behind me, it is a giant preying mantis, I don’t feel frightened in any way, Rather I feel assured, I feel safe. The being is very intelligent and wise. He tells me they are observing the Earth. This is all I remember though if I ever find where I wrote it down there may be other details. What is interesting about this experience is that it happened long before the internet exploded with videos, podcasts, blogs etc about aliens, particularly the mantis kind so I don't believe I was influenced by what I had seen or read. I remember the experience was very ‘real' which is probably why it has always stuck with me. When I heard other people on internet talking about these mantis beings well this brought my experience to mind and I realised that I could have been aboard a space ship with a mantis observing the Earth. To me he didn’t seem threatening,I didn't get the impression that he was a danger to us, however, I only met one and if their race is like the Human race they may be a mix of what we may perceive as good and bad. Meeting a giant preying mantis on a space ship does sound a bit crazy, doesn't it, but why not, why not indeed…as Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet. “There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” The important thing is to keep an open mind, closed minds cannot grow. So whatever boundaries we may have we should be ready to push beyond them and then beyond them a little more, always transcending, always transcending. Out-of-body experiences certainly force you to open your horizons to include other possibilities, that you may not have considered had you not experienced them first hand. Other possibilities also within our 3D world, maybe we all live in our own reality lol, once you start thinking about this the brain starts to go round in circles, Dire Straits once wrote this possibility into one of their best songs, in my opinion of course, ‘Brothers in Arms' There’s so many different worlds, So many different suns, And we have just one world, But we live in different ones. Last time we spoke about the battle of Hong Kong. On the night of December 18th, six Japanese battalions crossed Hong Kong harbour under cover of darkness and burning oil tanks. The Rajputs fought stubbornly but were overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Maltby fatally underestimated the assault, holding reserves against a frontal attack that never came. The breakthrough sparked a cascade of disasters. Elderly British businessmen and World War I veterans—the Hughsiliers—heroically held the North Point power station for 18 hours, delaying the entire Japanese advance. Private Geoghan, wounded but undeterred, charged a Japanese officer and killed him, incredibly surviving. The battle's focal point became Wongneichong Gap, where Brigadier Lawson died defending his headquarters. Desperate, piecemeal counter-attacks by Canadians and Scots failed amid chaos and poor coordination. Finally, a single Canadian company under Lieutenant Blackwood held the position for four days against overwhelming odds, killing over 200 enemy soldiers before surrendering. By dawn on December 20, the Japanese Army had consolidated its position across Hong Kong Island. The 1/229th and 2/228th prepared to sweep southeastward from Taitam and Saiwan toward Stanley. The 2/229th and 3/229th, positioned near Stanley Gap, readied themselves to advance toward Repulse Bay. East of Wongneichong Gap, the 1/228th poised for the push toward Deep Water Bay, while the 3/228th, one of the original reserve battalions, had just arrived on the northern shore. On Jardine's Lookout, two fresh battalions—the 1/230th and 2/230th—prepared to advance westward across the gap. The West Brigade, meanwhile, held a fragile, ill-defined line: Z Company of the 1st Middlesex and Rajput survivors at Leighton Hill in the north, the 2 Royal Scots on the northern slopes of Mount Nicholson, and the Winnipeg Grenadiers, minus D Company, still clinging to pillboxes at Wongneichong Gap. The 228th Regiment moved first, tasked with clearing Postbridge House of its remaining defenders. Simultaneously, the 229th dispatched reconnaissance teams past Violet Hill toward the cliffs overlooking Repulse Bay Hotel—that opulent five-star resort now transformed into an impromptu fortress sheltering evacuees, soldiers, and sailors. What awaited was an epic three-day siege. Despite their gains, the Japanese later confessed that British resistance proved far stiffer than anticipated. They spent much of the 20th consolidating positions and bringing up supplies rather than pressing forward. Maltby, determined not to cede the initiative, dispatched a Royal Rifles company and two HKVDC platoons to the hotel with orders to attack the Gap from the south via Violet Hill. They recaptured the garages and outhouses but lacked the artillery support necessary to advance further. Growing anxious, Maltby sent a desperately weak platoon of the 2/14 Punjab—only 25 men—to reinforce them and push along the southern coast. Colonel Kidd, commanding the Punjab regiment, personally led an assault on Shouson Hill to link up with besieged sailors. He was killed in the attempt, and the mixed force of sailors and Punjabis fell back with severe losses. By the 22nd, after pressing forward from Shouson Hill, the Japanese seized Brick Hill and systematically beheaded all survivors. Yet the Japanese conquest contained stubborn pockets that refused to crumble. The HKSRA gunners held one end of Brick Hill. A ragtag force of HKVDC, naval personnel, Canadians, and Middlesex under Major Dewar maintained Little Hong Kong's ammunition store. HMS Cicala, providing artillery support from Deep Water Bay, was struck from the air and scuttled, eventually sinking in the Lamma Channel. Colonel H. B. Rose, the HKVDC commander, assumed control of the West Brigade following Brigadier Lawson's death. He spent much of the 20th preparing an ambitious counter-attack: the 2 Royal Scots and Winnipeg Grenadiers would drive toward the Gap from the west, supported by B Company of the Grenadiers, brought up from Pokfulam on the island's western coast. The operation commenced poorly. B Company arrived late to find that the Royal Scots had already departed Mount Nicholson's eastern slopes for reasons no one could later explain. The Grenadiers attacked alone through pitch darkness and torrential rain, splitting into two groups that circled Mount Nicholson from opposite directions, meeting above the Gap at dawn. Colonel Doi's tactical instinct struck again. Observing the undefended summit of Mount Nicholson—lost through British inattention—he seized the moment. That afternoon, under cover of heavy rain, he ordered the 1/228th in a three-company formation to take the position without opposition. When B Company blundered into the Japanese, a savage close-quarters battle erupted that cost the Grenadiers all their officers, seven NCOs, and 29 men. Overwhelmed, B Company retreated to Mount Nicholson's western slope as Doi prepared to exploit his success and assault Mount Cameron. At dawn on the 21st, Wallis proposed a new coordinated attack on the Gap. Major T. G. MacAuley of the Royal Rifles led a combined force of Canadian and HKVDC troops from Stanley Mount at 0915 hours. Accurate mortar fire from Red Hill met them immediately. Hand-to-hand combat erupted at Bridge Hill and Notting Hill before the force could push toward the Gap via Violet Hill. By 1700 hours, MacAuley and all HKVDC officers were wounded. Wallis ordered withdrawal. That same morning at 1030 hours, the Japanese launched a second amphibious assault, driving toward Victoria City itself and reaching the east side of what is now Victoria Park. The anti-aircraft gun at Watson's factory in Causeway Bay was silenced. The naval yard suffered devastating mortar bombardment; all its guns fell silent. Major C. R. Templer, assigned to command at Repulse Bay, had successfully repulsed numerous probing attacks. When ordered to assault the Gap with two platoons of Canadian infantry and two HKVDC machine-gun sections, he encountered such overwhelming Japanese force that he abandoned the operation and withdrew beyond Middle Ridge. By dawn on the 22nd, the Japanese finally established heavy artillery on Hong Kong Island. Two battalions of the 229th concentrated on Repulse Bay Hotel. The divisional reserves—1/229th and 1/230th—deployed against the East Brigade as it fell back to its last bastion: Stanley Peninsula. Stanley's defenses were organized in three concentric zones. The forward area, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Home, comprised elements of the 1st Middlesex, Royal Rifles companies, and HKVDC troops, supported by a single 2-pounder gun. Stanley village, under Lieutenant Colonel Wilcox, held the second line with artillery pieces and mixed infantry. A final reserve at Stanley Hill and Fort, under Lieutenant Colonel Shaw, contained the last of the artillery and the 1st and 2nd HKVDC batteries. To the west, British forces barely held their positions. The 2/14 Punjab, 1st Middlesex, 4/7 Rajputs, Royal Scots, and Winnipeg Grenadiers stretched along Mount Cameron and the northern heights—a thin, exhausted line facing Japanese battalions concentrated along a kilometer-long front. At noon on the 22nd, Japanese forces attacked Stanley Mound and Sugarloaf, held by B Company of the Royal Rifles augmented with platoons from HQ and D Companies. Despite multiple repulses, ammunition shortages forced the Canadians to retire to the southern slopes. The situation at Repulse Bay Hotel deteriorated daily, yet Major Templer continued to hold against repeated assaults. As Christmas Eve dawned, all defenders faced grim circumstances. The Royal Rifles of Canada, shattered from bearing the brunt of Japanese attacks, withdrew into Stanley Fort—but not before a heated confrontation between Lieutenant Colonel Home and Brigadier Wallis in which the Canadians bitterly accused their comrades of not "pulling their weight." In the evening of december 21st, Lt Colonel Home, now the senior surviving Canadian officer, spoke to Lt Colonel Sutcliffe, learning about the plight of the Winnipeg grenadiers trying to hold the crest of Mount Cameron. Sutcliffe reported that "his battalion was decimated and yet the high command was ordering his men to make counter attacks. So he asked Home if he could not do something to stop what he considered a useless waste of lives." Home took this to heart and began to inform Brigadier Wallis that he wanted to see the Governor. He said to Wallis "his battalion was exhausted; further resistance would only result in the waste of valuable Canadian lives; as senior Canadian officer he felt a grave responsibility" Wallis persuaded Home to wait until morning. Home the next morning was more than ever convinced of the futility of resistance. Its important to note the relationship between senior Canadians and British officers were all but poisoned in Hong Kong, let alone imagine how the Indian or Chinese volunteer forces felt. The Canadians distrusted the British commanders who for the most part got everything wrong in the whole damn operation. Home was threatening a separate Canadian surrender as they had lost confidence in Brigadier Wallis of the east brigade, Maltby and other British staff officers. It seemed to the Canadians they were being sacrificed to ensure the honor of the garrison. As Royal Rifles Major John H price put it " There were plenty of Canadian officers who had battle experience in the first war who were competent to judge as to the possibility of a successful outcome of the defence of the island. Consider the facts - The Island had been split in two by vastly superior Japanese forces. On the eastern brigade front, which included the Stanley Peninsula, the Royal Rifles and one company of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Force were the only troops who had fought continuously day and night, without rest, since the landing on the 17th and were still carrying all the fighting. By the 21st they had been greatly reduced in fighting strength and by the 23rd to a strength of around 500 all ranks. (It might be interesting to note that when troops in this sector were marched out of Stanley fort as Prisoners of War, they numbered over 2000). It required no great military genius to predict the outcome of the battle once the Japanese had landed on the island with their control of sea and air and great superiority in weapons and men. He felt, I think rightly, that he would be derelict in his duty to his men and to the Canadian Government if he did not communicate his conclusions to the highest authority. Also neither Home nor his officers had any faith in Brig. Wallis' judgement or in his conduct of operations. And who had better right than he had? He and his men were bearing the brunt of the fighting and knew from first hand knowledge the strength and armament of the forces against them. The Higher Command had consistently shown an inability to grasp realities of the situation and to pursue tactics which might have prolonged the struggle but could not have altered the final result." Stanley's defenses were reorganized into multiple lines. HKVDC companies held scattered positions at Chung Honkok, near the police station, and throughout the village. The 1st Middlesex manned pillboxes with medium machine guns. The second defensive line crossed Stanley Peninsula near St Stephen's College, defended by British, Chinese, and Indian policemen alongside HKVDC troops under Corporal E. C. Drown—all senior officers and NCOs having fallen. The final reserve stretched across St Stephen's Prep School north of the prison, held by Sergeant Murphy's HKVDC section and Captain F. G. Rees's 1st Battery HKVDC. By this stage, prison staff, wardens, and inmates had been pressed into the HKVDC. Among them was "Crumb" Chattey, a former captain of the 1st Middlesex serving a court-martial sentence for homosexual offences under the law of the time. Chattey assumed command of forty jailers and assorted men, including the colony executioner, who mounted a spirited defense. Japanese forces massed on Taitam Road with obvious intent to crush Stanley's remaining defense. Their first assault failed but destroyed two 18-pounders and two 2-pounder guns. Shortly before 2100 hours, a second attack commenced, this time supported by three tankettes. Two were destroyed by 2-pounders, yet No. 2 HKVDC Company was forced back to Stanley village with most of its men lost. Major H. R. Forsyth, the company commander, was recommended for a Victoria Cross for his stubborn defense against overwhelming odds. After midnight, a pillbox manned by C Company of the 1st Middlesex was overrun; Sergeant Sheehan and most of his crew were killed. The HKVDC line fractured. During all of this chaos, at midnight of the the Japanese made it to the field hospital at St Stephens College and this is where our story is going to take one of its darkest turns. In the early hours of Christmas day, the Japanese approached St Stephen's hospital which held approximately 96 wounded soldiers. Doctors and nurses stepped forward to surrender. Two doctors in charge, Lt Dr Colonel Black and his second in command Captain Dr Witney Barred the front door and Black called out 'You can't come in here' 'this is a hospital'. With deliberate aim, one of the Japanese soldiers raised his rifle and shot the doctor through the head.The Japanese mob then surged into the hospital ward, the body of Dr Black was repeatedly bayoneted as he lay at the door. The Japanese proceeded to enter the building and a massacre of unprecedented ferocity took place. The Japanese ripped the bandages off the wounded patients and plunged their bayonets into the amputated arms and legs before finishing them off with a bullet. In half an hour fifty-six wounded soldiers had been massacred while the nursing staff looked on helplessly. They cut off ears, gouged out eyes, beat and raped the nurses. I want to read to you some testimony made by Sister Miss Amelia Fleming Gordon who witnessed what we now call the St Stephens College Massacre, something probably unknown to many outside Canada or Hong Kong. "Just before dawn there was a terrific howl and shortly afterwards Japanese arrived in large numbers at the front entrance. Captain Scotcher was pulled out and shortly afterwards he instructed me to come out and put my hands above my head. They took my steel helmet and cracked me over the head with it, searched my pockets, took off my red cross band and removed my watch that I had. They shouted for everyone to come out and everyone did except Sgt Parkin, who attempted to run past but was shot dead. We were marched single file into one of the adjacent classrooms, the patients also being brought in. Here we remained for about an hour or two, crowded and huddled together with no room to lie or sit down. Several of our patients between 50 to 60 I imagine were killed during the day. After 2 hours we were marched in single file upstairs and saw dead bodies and blood covering the stairs. We were then put into different classrooms, I went into a small room with four VADS (Mrs smith, Mrs Begg, Mrs Buxton and Mrs Simmons) where there were 5 chinese women. At 4:30m some Japanese soldiers came in and removed Mrs Smith, Begg and Buxton, I never saw them again. One of the Chinese girls told Mrs Simmons they had taken out the 3 women to kill them and would return for us. We were later ordered to bandage wounded Japanese soldiers. They took us to another room overlooking the tennis court, where there were five dead bodies of Red Cross personnel. We were made to sit on these dead bodies. I and Mrs Fideo were taken to other rooms. In my room there were two dead bodies, and I was made to take off all my clothes whilst they removed theirs. Before touching me they apparently became afraid someone was coming and made me put my clothes on again and I was returned to the room where Mrs Simmons and Mrs Andrews-Levinge still were. Mrs Fideo joined us almost immediately in a weeping state and told us she had been raped. We were left in peace for a short time only, 3 soldiers came in and took me in a small adjacent bathroom, knocked me down and all raped me one after the other, and then let me return. Mrs Fideo was then taken and underwent a similar experience. Both Mrs Fideo and I were then taken out a second time and raped as before Mrs Simmons and Mrs Andrews-levigne remained untouched. We were all now desperate and discovering there was a Yale lock on the door we pulled it locking ourselves in. They returned several times during the night but did not force an entrance." Rifle man Sydney Skelton of "D" company of the Royal Rifles had this to say. ""The Japs stormed the hospital throwing grenades and bayoneting the wounded. I had rolled under a bed and lay as still as I could. A Jap turned me over, kicked me in the face, and tore off my bandages. I didn't move, or make a sound. The guy must have thought I was dead and took off. I heard screams coming from outside, terrible screams I can still hear in my head twenty years later. I saw a Jap coming into the hospital and take men outside at random. One of the wounded they dragged from his bed, cut off his ears, and ripped out his tongue. Then they took him outside and shot him. There was a lull in the din and he heard a British officer shout: "If you can walk or crawl to the door you may be allowed to live." At this point Skelton tried to crawl to the door: "I was really confused from the anesthetic and I started to crawl, dragging my blanket, towards the door. A guy just ahead of me, a Hong Kong Volunteer, with a clasp knife in his belt, but his hands raised, was bayoneted as soon as he went out the door. The Padre grabbed me and slapped me to my senses. I'm alive today, thanks to him." A Japanese officer entered the hospital, saw Skelton with his wounds bleeding. He tore off Skelton's watch, hit him with the flat side of his sword and ordered him to go upstairs. Though badly wounded, Skelton crawled up the stairs and into a room that would be his prison for the next two days. Skelton spent nearly four years as a captive, first in Hong Kong and later in Japan where he worked as a slave labourer in a coal mine. Somehow, he made it home, where he lived in Scarsboro, Ontario. In a 1961 interview, he said: "Twenty years have passed, but I can never forget Christmas, 1941." On Christmas morning, Brigadier Wallis ordered C Company of the Royal Rifles of Canada to lead a counter-attack retaking the bungalows on Stanley village's ridge. Lieutenant Colonel Home refused. Wallis deployed D Company of the Winnipeg Grenadiers under Major Parker instead. At 1300 hours, the attack went in without artillery support. The 18th Platoon under Sergeant McDonnell penetrated to Stanley village, inflicting heavy casualties in savage hand-to-hand combat, but was eventually driven back to the fort. Of 148 men who attacked, only 44 answered roll call at day's end. Urban defense collapsed in stages. Using mines and a Bofors 40-millimeter gun in an anti-personnel role, the 230th Regiment pushed into Wanchai, held up briefly at the China Fleet Club. At Wanchai Market, an 18-pounder was destroyed. Japanese forces reached the Naval Dockyard's western boundary. The Rajputs fell back west of the racecourse. Mount Parish fell, opening the final approach to Victoria City. Back on December 21st, General Maltby sent a communique to the war office indicated that resistance was almost at an end. According to Sir John Kennedy, the director of Military operations in London "We had to decide whether to order the troops to fight it out or give the Governor permission to surrender as he wished to do... the psychological aspect was of overriding importance, particularly with an Oriental enemy. If we fought to the last round and the last man at Hong Kong, we should gain an indirect military advantage, in that the Japanese would judge our powers of resistance elsewhere by the same standard. Therefore my opinion was that, although it was an unpleasant decision, the garrison should be told to fight it out.". When Prime Minister Churchill was informed he sent a typical churchillian message "there must be no thought of surrender..the enemy must be compelled to expend the utmost life and equipment. There must be vigorous fighting in the inner defenses, and, if need be, from house to house. Every day that you are able to maintain your resistance will help the allied cause". Both the Governor and General had little choice but to agree, on Christmas the governors message was "fight on. Hold fast for king and empire". By the afternoon it was clear further resistance was futile. At 1530 hours on December 25, Governor Young officially surrendered. A white flag rose over the colony. Young and Major General Maltby crossed Victoria Harbour from Queen's Pier to meet General Sakai at the Peninsula Hotel, renamed "Toa" by its new occupants. It was the first occasion on which a British Crown Colony had surrendered to an invading force. The garrison had held out for 17 days, the day is known in Hong Kong as "black christmas". Lieutenant Colonel R. G. Lamb and Lieutenant J. T. Prior descended from Fortress Headquarters to Stanley to order Brigadier Wallis to lay down arms. Wallis refused without written confirmation. When Major Harland arrived with official orders, Wallis finally capitulated. At 0230 hours on December 26, 1941, he and 2,000 men crossed the lines in surrender. Two days later, on the 28th, the Japanese staged a 2,000-man victory parade led by Lieutenant General Sano on a white horse. While the general paraded, his troops—officially granted three days of "rest and recreation"—embarked on systematic rape and pillage across the fallen colony. Rear-Admiral Chan Chak arrived in Hong Kong in 1938 as an unlikely businessman—General Manager of a stockbroker's firm—but his true role was far more consequential. The one-legged Chinese admiral commanded the Military Mission tasked with coordinating China's war effort with British operations. Working seamlessly with the police special branch and intelligence services, Chan orchestrated a shadow campaign against Japanese sympathizers and traitors, drawing on a network of Nationalist agents, many of whom carried Triad connections. His inner circle included Col. Yee Shiu Kee of Chinese intelligence (posing as an insurance salesman), Lt. Cdr. Henry Hsu as aide-de-camp, and Coxswain Yeung Chuen as bodyguard. As Governor Young prepared to sign the unconditional surrender on Christmas afternoon 1941, Chan received permission to lead an escape attempt. The 2nd MTB Flotilla—vessels MTBs 7, 9, 10, 11 and 27—waited in hiding near Aberdeen Island, but Chan's perilous journey through Victoria's ruins delayed his arrival. Finding the MTBs absent, he boarded HMS Cornflower II instead, only to come under withering machine-gun fire as the launch attempted to reach open water. Abandon ship was called. Chan removed his wooden leg and surrendered his lifebuoy to his non-swimming bodyguard, diving into the chaos with Lt. Cdr. Hsu. Almost immediately, a Japanese bullet tore through Chan's wrist—a crippling wound for a one-armed, one-legged swimmer fighting through hostile fire. The Japanese, sensing they had their quarry, ignited the hillside grass with tracer rounds to drive the men back into the sea. Col. Yee remained aboard the bullet-riddled vessel and was last seen attempting to hide; he would eventually make his way to unoccupied China after several harrowing days. The other escapees scattered across Aberdeen Island in desperation. Hearing the gunfire from their concealment on the far side of the island, the MTBs approached cautiously, rescuing survivors as they went. By 2130 hours on Christmas Day, sixty-eight survivors were racing toward Mirs Bay to rendezvous with Communist guerrillas. There the MTBs were scuttled after valuables were salvaged, and the escape party was welcomed as heroes and guided safely to Huizhou in unoccupied China. This dramatic flight marked the first of many escapes and signaled the beginning of Allied cooperation with the Chinese Communist forces. As British forces withdrew from Kowloon, a new force emerged from the shadows. The Guangdong People's Anti-Japanese Guerrillas East River Column (ERC)—a battle-hardened Communist organization founded in 1938—took up the struggle against the Japanese invaders. The ERC had consolidated various local anti-Japanese forces that sprang up after Guangzhou fell to Japan, anchoring itself on two formidable core units: Zeng Sheng's Baoan People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Main Force and Wang Zuorao's East Baoan regiment. By the eve of Hong Kong's invasion, the Third and Fifth Column fielded fifteen hundred fighters—seasoned veterans who had waged three years of resistance across Guangdong Province. Even as the British capitulated, Chinese Hongkongers—farmers and fishermen mostly—took up arms alongside their Communist allies. By year's end, over one hundred ERC members operated clandestinely in Hong Kong. In February 1942, to better organize this growing force, the HKKIB was formally established under Cai Guoliang's command, with Political Commissar Chen Daming answering to Zeng Sheng as overall commander of the ERC. The ERC's first mission was audacious in scope: rescue prominent Chinese and foreign VIPs trapped in Hong Kong. While China burned, the colony had remained a haven for industrialists, politicians, authors and dignitaries fleeing the war—now all vulnerable to Japanese occupation. Between December 1941 and June 1942, the ERC spirited over eight hundred key figures past Japanese lines to safety, while simultaneously escorting more than two thousand overseas Chinese volunteers eager to join the anti-Japanese war effort. The guerrillas also became architects of POW liberation. In March 1942, when British prisoners were forced to labor at Kai Tak Airport, the ERC deployed English-speaking operatives disguised as street vendors to infiltrate the airfield and extract Captain Thompson and four comrades through the rainwater culvert system. Among notable rescues were Lt. Col. Ride of the HKVDC (who would establish the British Army Aid Group), naval officers including Lt. J. W. Hurston of the Royal Navy, artillery officer Lt. G. D. Clagne, Indian soldiers such as Lashkar Singh and Mehnga Singh, and key civilians: the HSBC banker T. J. J. Fenwick, Police Superintendent W. P. Thompson, and foreign nationals—Russians, Danes, Norwegians—who found sanctuary in the unoccupied interior. Most were escorted to safety in China, but two Royal Scots soldiers—Joseph Gallaher and Daniel Hodges—remained with the ERC for six weeks, training guerrilla fighters in the use of British weapons and medium machine guns. These two Scottish soldiers became among the few Westerners to fight alongside Chinese Communist forces, a testament to the bonds forged in shared struggle against the Japanese occupier. The casualty figures for Hong Kong remain contested. General Maltby's immediate post-war reports claimed 2,123 defenders dead or missing with 1,332 wounded, but these were later deemed inflated. The Chief Signal Officer, imprisoned after the surrender, compiled a more credible tally: 2,721 dead and missing. Modern estimates place military casualties around 1,600, including medical personnel from St John Ambulance. Civilian losses proved far grimmer—estimates suggest approximately 7,000 killed. Japanese records tell a different story. The Defence Agency historical section documented 1,720 Japanese deaths, while the Japanese occupation authority's own newspaper, Hong Kong News, reported 1,966 dead and 6,000 wounded on 29 December 1941. On 20 February 1942, Major-General Isogai Rensuke took office as Governor, commanding occupation forces under Brigadier Okada Umekichi. Three independent infantry regiments and supporting artillery maintained control of the colony. The occupiers' brutality would not escape Allied judgment. Major-General Ito, commander of the division's infantry, faced war crimes convictions. More prominently, Lieutenant-General Sakai, the 38th Army's commander and temporary governor, was tried, convicted, and executed by firing squad in 1946. Major-General Isogai received life imprisonment for war crimes but was released in 1967. Lieutenant-General Tanaka, final Japanese Governor and commander of the 23rd Army, was executed in 1947. Of the senior commanders, only Vice-Admiral Niimi survived the war, living to age 106. General Maltby endured captivity throughout the East, moving from Hong Kong to Shanghai and Taiwan, finally reaching a camp near the Chinese-Mongolian border before repatriation from Shenyang (Mukden). His tenure received no official recognition despite the stubborn defense he had mounted. Lieutenant-Colonel White of the 2 Royal Scots survived internment but died shortly after returning to Britain, his health shattered by cancer. Governor Young resumed office in late 1946, attributing the colony's rapid loss to insufficient Chinese support for the British war effort. His attempts to introduce representative government alarmed London, which promptly replaced him with Sir Robert Black. Young retired in 1947. Maltby, too, retired from the Army soon afterward, also without honor. Not all were forgotten. Rear-Admiral Chan received an honorary KBE from British Ambassador Sir Horace Seymour. Colonel Yee was granted an honorary CBE, and Lieutenant-Commander Henry Hsu an honorary OBE. Hsu, a gifted athlete, became a member of the International Olympic Committee representing Chinese Taipei. Lieutenant-Colonel Stewart of 1 Middlesex died from illness in 1942. Three HKRNVR men—Petty Officer J. W. Fallace, W. C. Johnstone, and civilian Arthur Evans—escaped from the Lisbon Maru and reached Chongqing (Chunking). Of 1,834 POWs aboard that transport, only 716 returned home. Lieutenant Walda, responsible for brutal treatment of prisoners, died before sentencing; Captain Koyda, the Lisbon Maru's commander, received seven years' imprisonment. The British authorities formally acknowledged the East River Column's role—without its aid, no escapee would have survived the treacherous journey to freedom. When future Prime Minister James Callaghan raised questions in Parliament, the government responded with generous monetary awards, free medical care, and employment opportunities for survivors and their families. Many settled in the United Kingdom; others remained to serve in public and private sectors until Hong Kong's return to China in 1997, when the ERC liaison office became the local branch of the New China News Agency. Zeng Sheng, the ERC commander, rose to become Deputy Chief of Staff of the South China Military Region, then Deputy Provincial Governor and Mayor of Guangzhou. Purged during the Cultural Revolution, he was rehabilitated and became Minister of Communication in 1979. He died in Guangzhou in November 1995. One hundred twenty-eight HKVDC members, forty-nine soldiers of the British Army, and fifty personnel from transport and civil defense units escaped to Free China. The RAF transported them to Assam, then Calcutta, via the British Army Aid Group. The first groups joined the 9th Battalion of the Border Regiment at Fort William; the third and fourth joined the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Initially relegated to non-combatant roles, their fortunes changed when Brigadier Michael Calvert—who had served in pre-war Hong Kong commanding the Chinese Sappers—called for volunteers to fight the Japanese in Burma. All stepped forward. After months of intensive training, they were formally enrolled on 14 February 1943 as the Hong Kong Volunteer Company, integrated into Wingate's legendary Chindits, where they would see action deep behind Japanese lines in the jungles of Burma. Foreword (Ali)This is the second edition of Astral Dancer. The dreams and astral adventures remain the same, apart from a little editing. I have only added this foreword and added a new chapter at the end discussing the implications of my experiences. After rereading this book recently, I have realised it goes deeper than I originally thought, with connections on many levels. Previously I had written a novel though it was never published, one day about 20 years ago I sat at the kitchen table and started writing what came into my head. Around the same time, I started having a lot of dreams and astral adventures, some of which are described in ‘Astral Dancer'. It was as if the novel, called ‘The Photograph', were the catalyst for an incredible adventure into self, crossing time and space. In ‘The Photograph', the protagonist, Toni, is a teenager who wants to make a difference and help troubled children in difficult situations. She also had a difficult childhood, but I won't go into details and spoil the story in case you wish to read it. Can a fictional character make a difference? At first I thought it would be by donating money from the sale of the book to a children's charity but I realise now it went a lot deeper than that. It is interesting that while writing this in a bar with a coffee, ‘Killing Me Softly' by Roberta Flack comes on the radio, I havealways loved this song and often in my mind when listening to this song I would see Toni, a synchronicity which has sent shivers up and down my spine. I digress slightly but I just had to mention it as the synchronicities have been many. Toni has made, and continues to make, a difference, but how is this possible? How can a character born from my imagination effect so deeply the lives of other children who have suffered? It is difficult to explain but I will try. ‘Astral Dancer' and ‘The Photograph' are in a sort of time loop. Originally in the latter book, in one particular chapter, I had written in a lot about the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, then I was a little concerned with copyright laws so in the end I changed this part to include ‘Astral Dancer' to avoid any possible complications. Maybe it was always meant to have been this way but it could never have happened until both books had been completed. Toni reads ‘Astral Dancer' and it gives her the courage to face her fears. But without Toni, the book would never have happened in the first place hence the time loop, all made possible as everything is NOW, there is no past nor future. We live in an apparent linear fashion to make sense of our lives. However, all is in the NOW and is accessible to us. It is difficult to get our physical minds round this concept as we want beginnings and endings, we want everything in a linear fashion. Toni made a difference as she put things in motion. On some level, she was a part of me, helping me free myself from fears I was carrying from other selves and other lives. So without her courage, all the healing astral adventures I have had since would not have been possible, the healing of children that I have done in the astral would never have happened. Therefore, Toni is making a difference in a way that I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams. When I wrote the first words of ‘The Photograph', who would have thought where those words would have taken me. “If you will practice being fictional for a while, you will understand that fictional characters are sometimes more real than people with bodies and heartbeats.” Richard Bach, Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah There is another twist to all this – there was another parallel happening in the physical. I cannot tell this story as it is not mine to tell but ‘The Photograph' is also symbolic of the experiences of someone I met after finishing the book. I no longer have contact with this person but, in some way, it was all connected. You will have to trust me on this one as I cannot go into detail. It was an incredible time with so many different levels interacting with each other.A significant outcome of ‘The Photograph'/‘Astral Dancer' link is how it shows the importance of healing our inner child, our joy within. Fear stifles our joy. We can choose to heal our inner child whenever we want to though it may not be an easy journey. It is, however, a continual process, our inner child needs nurturing, it needs space. You can't simply make the connection and then let it go, it needs to be constantly nourished. Only now, having reread both books, have the implications of my adventures started to surface in my mind, how much they are interconnected. It is possible I will never fully understand, at least while I am focused in my human brain. However, maybe one day, with expanded consciousness, I will be able to see the whole picture. Introduction (Ali)About me…… I am a housewife and mother. I would describe myself as quite normal, although there are some members of my family who might disagree! I have simply trained myself to be consciously present during some of what I do while sleeping. We are all capable of the same and much more. This book is about my experiences in the Astral, it is not about technique or explanations concerning the structure of the astral planes, I'm not interested in technicalities. I go with the flow and rely on intuition, which never fails me. ‘In-tuition' comes from a higher source, a source deep within our being. What is important for me is being in the right astral place at the right astral time, from this inner space, so much is possible. I can assist both people incarnated on Earth, and those having difficulty crossing over from physical to spiritual life – “Take me where I need to be” is the phrase I often use when I find myself out-of-body. It is not possible for me to write a book about my astral adventures without a brief history of how it all started. My first conscious out-of-body experience (OBE for short) was spontaneous. This means I wasn't actually trying to do it, though I was trying to lucid dream. In an OBE, a part of you appears to exit the physical body. You are consciously aware of the situation and you may also wake up already in the astral. A lucid dream, on the other hand, is a dream in which your mind is fully awake and you know that you are dreaming. This is not a book about the technical side of OBEs so we'll leave it there. My first exit was very simple; I didn't even leave the room. I had read about OBEs so, when I found myself floating above my body, I knew exactly what was happening. The morning after this experience I was ecstatic; I wanted to shout from the rooftops, but who would have listened? Who would have taken me seriously? Some time after this first experience I went to a bookshop and found ‘Adventures Beyond the Body' by William Buhlman, I discovered that the author had an OBE forum on the Internet, so I logged in. There I found kind, understanding people who listened and gave me advice and insights into my experiences. To have OBEs and not share them is like making a birthday cake, lighting the candles and not inviting anyone else to celebrate with you. Out-of-body experiences can, occasionally, be scary if you are not aware of what's happening, sharing helps us realise that what happens is normal and we are in fact not crazy. When the William Buhlman discussion arena closed a group of us didn't want to give up what we had found so precious and, thanks to a great guy called Rick, we stayed together. Our forum was called ‘Project Radiant Light', PRL. PRL was not just concerned with OBEs, we considered ourselves a spiritual community, ready to hold out a hand to all who needed it. PRL was about spiritual support; it was about laughing and, at times, crying together, sharing and ‘having someone to talk to'. Our forum was based on respect for fellow members, in the knowledge that we are all part of the great human family. When social media exploded there were the inevitable changes as internet communication started to move away from the forum set up, however some of us remained in touch. Sometimes our world seems full of darkness, of destruction, of so much we don't want. The news bombards us with all the terrible events that happen around the world. This is only the surface, there is so much good that we don't hear about. There are many spiritual groups around the globe – good things ARE happening. Maybe it is time, as individuals, to focus more on the positive. I'm not saying ignore the suffering, instead to try to hold in our minds what is good in our lives and in the world. There are also many astral projection/out-of-body experience groups on the internet and a lot of people have started teaching it. In my opinion, care should be taken when choosing a teacher to help you, there is a lot of misinformation around concerning this subject and it is not something to be taken lightly. If a person suffers from depression or is not of a ‘stable' state of mind, I advise against it. This is because the astral is thought and feeling sensitive, this means that what you think or what you feel are reflected back at you, like attracts like. My advice is to approach astral projection and out-of-body experiences with personal growth in mind, the desire to grow spiritually. OBEs can be fun of course and there are times when you need a holiday from the physical, however, in my opinion, making the decision to follow this path is a decision not to be made flippantly. A Special Dedication I would like to express my thanks to a kind and generous lady who always supported myself and many others in our journeys. Her name was Sandy and I met her on what was the William Buhlman discussion forum, she has now made her journey into the beyond and is greatly missed. She was always ready with words of wisdom, reassurance and encouragement; she made a difference in so many lives. About the Book…. ‘Astral Dancer' is divided into two parts. The first describes my contact with a past life through dreams and out-of-body experiences, and the second, further dream scenarios and astral adventures. I use various terms that the reader may or may not be familiar with, these are defined below, some from a personal viewpoint. Astral Projection – is often used as a general term to describe these experiences though it literally means projecting in the astral plane as opposed to the etheric plane, the mental plane etc. OBE – Out-of-body experience, many people define this term in different ways. For simplicity, I have used it in the general sense to describe all experiences where there is a detachment of consciousness from the physical body. Where the consciousness is focused away from the physical body. To OBE – the expression OBE is often used as a verb. Mind Awake/Body Asleep – a condition where the physical body is asleep but the mind is awake and aware. The physical eyes are closed yet vision is possible as you are not actually seeing through them. At this point, you still feel as if you are inside the body. Neg – used to describe negative energy, used as a noun. Higher Self (HS) – An inner infinite source of wisdom. A part of us that appears separate from the physical, though it is not, we have constant access to this source of strength and wisdom, and we are often guided by our Higher Self through feelings and intuitions. Our Higher Selves appear in dreams and astral experiences as either male or female, regardless of our own gender. My Sacred Garden – When I leave my body I often find myself in my parents' garden. As a child, I spent many wonderful hours here. My parents' house and the garden represent my whole self, all of me, from here I can reach past, present and future selves. I love this place. It has come to symbolise my inner being, the lush green grass, the roses and the apple tree at the bottom, I consider it the garden of my soul. I try as much as I can to use the present tense. Our minds spend so much time wandering in the past and in the future, yet we really only know the present. The dreams and OBEs are expressed in the present (as much as they can be) because this is how they were lived and experienced, in that present, in that ‘now'. They generally have a title and/or date and are indicated by an asterisk at the beginning and end.The first part of this book is narrated by two people, myself (Ali) and another me, his name is Danny. I have been absent for a while, every now and again I take a timeout from ‘internet life’ I focus on other things like the importance of sound in our lives, how different frequencies may affect us, lately I have also be looking into the power of our own voices and the healing capacity our voices may hold. In the end all comes back to the fact that we are energy, everything is energy, I was shown this in an OBE back in my early days as an interdimensional traveller, I was out of body and I wondered what the inside of the wooden window frame felt like so I flew into it. It was like globules of moving energy going up and down a bit like one of those 1970s lamps. It was so fascinating being there in the window frame. Anyway I wanted to begin my internet re-emergence by describing an experience I had recently, it was kind of a dream but not really a dream, more like a flash of understanding received in the form of a scene of which I was an observer and experiencer. I’ll use the present tense. I am observing a kind of wave in constant movement, it isn’t one or another colour but a mix, it is forever present, it is Eternity. Riding the wave is our physical reality, happening within Eternity, in the experience I feel that our construct of time is simply that, a construct happening in a moment of Eternity, our time is a perspective, an unfolding of events within the present. I feel the wave it is profound. I wake up. A simple scene but a deep significance, these are types of messages that stay with you, I could never truly describe the Eternity wave, some things beyond the physical are impossible to be put into words. In many OBEs and various experiences you bring things back, information, feelings about how things are, you have no solid physical proof, but in your heart you know them to be true. I should add as well that I had woken up during the night and played Holy Harmony by Jonathan Goldman while I went back to sleep. This is no way an ad for the album everyone has different tastes in music but I do find listening to this is relaxing, it does help me calm my mind. I often listen to music while going to sleep, particularly theta frequencies. This particular night I chose Holy Harmony. One of my favourite phrases has always been, ‘we are Life living in Eternity’ , I feel it is good to remind ourselves often that we are spiritual beings in a physical body, the physical body being an energetic expression and something we can work with for the betterment of our world, it is not something to escape from. Out-of-Body experiences can truly help with understanding the hows and whys of this world and why we are here, they can help us understand the complexities of life on Earth for ourselves without taking someone else’s world for it including mine lol. I used to have a little community on internet but I had to close it as it was no longer free. I like to have a corner of internet that feels more chill than the social media platforms. Anyway I have set up a new corner on Patreon, I’m not selling anything, I wanted to get away from using social media as the main base, there seems to be so much advertising now it’s so easy to get distracted. Intervention rates have climbed so fast in UK maternity care that it is hard not to ask a blunt question: is all this doing what it promised to do? Professor Liz Morris is a glaciologist whose work in some of the earth's most inhospitable environments has broadened humanity's understanding of climate change and polar science. Her accolades include the prestigious Polar Medal and an OBE for services to Polar Science.Liz was born in London in 1946 and family legend has it that she fell in love with snow and ice the following year during what was known as the Big Freeze - one of the most severe and punishing winters in British history. She studied physics at Bristol University and applied for a role at the British Antarctic Survey in the early Seventies. At that time the institute did not have any female scientists working in the field and her application was rejected.Liz bided her time and eventually did get to work at the BAS, becoming head of the Ice and Climate Division in 1986. The following year she became the first British woman to undertake tent-based research in Antarctica, arriving just as the ozone hole discovery was breaking. Liz completed her last field trip in 2014. In 2020 the Antarctic Place-Names Committee named a glacier in her honour. Liz divides her time between the Cotswolds and Scotland. Originally recorded at the Intensive Care Society State of the Art Meeting in London, Desiree Chappell and Monty Mythen speak with Dan Martin, OBE, now Professor at the University of Plymouth and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, about the critical care management of Ebola and other viral haemorrhagic fevers. Dan Martin describes the Royal Free Hospital's role as the UK designated centre, using a Trexler isolator system to protect staff (rather than full PPE) and rehearsed RAF-supported repatriation and hospital drills, including simulations for intubation, lines and CPR. He explains that Ebola is not inevitably fatal and that outcomes improve with safe, good basic intensive care—fluids, electrolytes and preventing secondary infection—while evidence for expensive experimental therapies is limited.
