Ralph McTell is one of Britain's most enduring and respected singer-songwriters, a master storyteller whose songs have become woven into the fabric of English folk music. Born in Kent and raised in Croydon, McTell developed an early love for American blues, folk and traditional British music. As a teenager he was captivated by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, influences that shaped both his fingerstyle guitar technique and his gift for narrative songwriting. After studying at art school in the early '60s, Ralph began busking and performing in London's thriving folk clubs, quickly building a reputation for his intricate guitar work and warm, conversational stage presence. He signed with a record company in the late '60s, releasing his self-titled debut album in '68. His breakthrough came in '69 with “Streets of London,” a song inspired by his travels in Paris and London, where he encountered loneliness and poverty firsthand. The song's gentle melody and compassionate lyrics struck a deep chord. Though it became a hit in the early '70s and was later re-released to even greater success, its impact went far beyond chart positions. It became one of the most covered songs in British music history, recorded by hundreds of artists worldwide and earning McTell the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. Throughout the '70s, Ralph toured extensively releasing many albums. While “Streets of London” often overshadowed his broader catalogue, McTell consistently proved himself far more than a one-song artist. In the '80s, Ralph broadened his scope. He composed music for children's tv and wrote songs for stage productions. His collaborations included projects with fellow folk legend Wizz Jones and work alongside various orchestras.A defining characteristic of Ralph McTell's career has been his longevity and consistency. Rather than chasing trends, he has remained devoted to craftsmanship. In the 2000s and beyond, McTell continued to record and tour, releasing albums that revisited his influences and explored new material. He has also been honoured for his contributions to music, including receiving an OBE in 2010 for services to folk music.Today, Ralph McTell stands as a cornerstone of British folk songwriting. His legacy rests not only on a single iconic anthem, but on decades of carefully crafted songs that chronicle ordinary lives with empathy and grace. With his distinctive fingerpicking style, warm tenor voice and unflinching eye for human stories, McTell has carved out a body of work that continues to resonate across generations.More than half a century after he first stepped onto the folk club stage, Ralph McTell remains what he has always been: a storyteller with a guitar, shining a quiet light on the corners of life others might overlook.
In this special episode of A Life in Sound from The Listening Planet, Martyn Stewart returns to England for a journey that is at once deeply personal, profoundly nostalgic, and unexpectedly historic. Fresh from receiving an OBE from King Charles at Windsor Castle for services to nature, Martyn joins Amanda for an intimate conversation about honour, homecoming, and the soundscapes that first taught him how to listen. The episode begins with the extraordinary story of the award itself: the mysterious phone calls Martyn initially dismissed as a scam, the family intervention required to convince him the honour was real, and the surreal experience of arriving at Windsor Castle to discover that it would be the King himself conducting the investiture. For Martyn — a Birmingham-born son of the council estates who built a life documenting the disappearing voices of the natural world — the moment is almost impossible to comprehend. It is moving, funny and deeply human, revealing both his humility and his enduring disbelief at being recognised in this way.But this episode is about much more than ceremony. It is also a return to origins. Together, Martyn and Amanda journey back through England's landscapes and through Martyn's own memories: to the dawn chorus of his childhood, the bluebell woods that offered refuge and solace, and the rivers, forests, marshes and moorlands that shaped his earliest recordings. With extraordinary vividness, Martyn evokes the robin before dawn, the wren, the blackbird, the song thrush, the curlew, the kingfisher and the bittern, revealing not just what these places sound like, but what they mean.At the heart of the episode is Martyn's idea of sound as a time machine. His vast archive allows him to travel back decades and hear the world as it once was — a world richer in birdsong, quieter in its human footprint, and more alive to the subtle textures of the natural world. When recordings from 50 years ago are set against contemporary returns to the same places, the contrast is both fascinating and devastating. The result is an episode that captures the beauty of England's living soundscape while also confronting the losses brought by development, habitat change and modern noise.Travelling from the bluebell woods of Birmingham to the Peak District, the Wye Valley, Thetford Forest and the Norfolk Broads, Martyn builds an auditory map of England through memory, wildlife and wonder. Along the way, he reflects on the craft of sound recording, the patience it demands, and the heightened awareness required to truly hear what nature is saying. This is not only a story of birds and places, but of perception itself — of learning to listen beyond the obvious, and of what becomes possible when we do.Rich with humour, feeling and hard-won wisdom, this is an episode about belonging, recognition, loss and reverence. It is a portrait of England as heard through one of the world's great wildlife sound recordists, and a reminder that the sounds of home can shape an entire life.
On today's episode, I talk to Amelia Fletcher of the band Heavenly. Raised in Oxford, Amelia started playing in bands in the mid-1980s. Her first major group was Talulah Gosh, which she formed with Elizabeth Price, and they released a number of singles before Amelia left and formed Heavenly in 1989. Heavenly released four albums on Sarah and K Records, but after a tragic event, retired the name, and since then, Amelia has performed in a number of notable groups including Marine Research, Tender Trap and The Catenary Wires. Alongside her musical career, Amelia became a respected economist and academic, whose accolades are too numerous to mention in a short biography, though one major point is that her work has been used to curb Tech power in the UK, and due to her decades of service, she was appointed OBE in 2014 and CBE in 2020. Most recently, Heavenly has returned after their 30 year hiatus with Highway to Heavenly, which was just released last week on Skep Wax, and regardless of the intervening decades, is as good as anything they've ever done! Mary, a nurse and mother of six, had a profound near-death experience during a car accident in July 1994 when time seemed to stop just before her vehicle was hit by a semi-truck. In those few seconds, she felt enveloped in overwhelming love, sensed God's presence, and experienced a vivid life review in which she felt both the joy and pain her actions had caused others—without judgment, only love and understanding. She was shown that life's purpose is learning to love others and oneself through small acts of kindness, and she was given a choice to stay on Earth or leave. Choosing to return, Mary survived the crash with only minor injuries and was deeply transformed, losing her fear of death and living thereafter with a strong sense of purpose, compassion, and certainty that God is unconditional love.
Sue Black OBE, a legendary British computer scientist, discusses her inspirational journey into computing, why too little has changed when it comes to sexism in the tech industry and her hopes and fears for the global workforce in the age of AI. Black was the founding chair of the British Computing Society's BCSWomen group, championed the preservation of the WW2 codebreaking HQ Bletchley Park and is a professor of computer science at Durham.

No escuchó voces. No vio apariciones. Estados vibracionales previos a OBE. Episodios místicos espontáneos no inducidos. No buscó notoriedad. Andy was a joyful high-school student who nearly drowned during a lake picnic just days before graduation. As he sank helplessly, he heard a calm inner voice telling him to let go. The moment he stopped struggling, he felt himself leave his body and travel through a dark tunnel toward a brilliant, loving Light. All pain and fear vanished, replaced by warmth, peace, and overwhelming love. Andy experienced a life review without judgment and felt completely known and accepted. The Light spoke his name and told him he was loved, but then instructed him to return. He awoke back in his body on the beach, deeply saddened by the loss of the Light. Although he told others he remembered nothing, the experience remained vivid for the rest of his life and later inspired spontaneous poetry that Andy felt was flowing through him from the Light.Interview with todays experiencer.......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmZ--8WtAqc
February 2026Even amongst the distinguished ranks of WW2 codebreakers, Emily Anderson stood out. Recruited into military intelligence during WWI, her stellar career in diplomatic codebreaking lasted into the 1950s. Her greatest achievement came with the breaking of high-level Italian ciphers during the East African Campaign of 1940-41. It was called 'the perfect example of the cryptographers' war' and earned her the OBE in 1943.Anderson was also a renowned musicologist - her translations of the letters of Mozart and Beethoven are still considered authoritative. Yet until recent years, her life and intelligence work remained under the radar. This episode helps to set the record straight, and kick off a new occasional series focusing on key personalities in codebreaking and intelligence. Bletchley Park's Research Officer Dr Thomas Cheetham is joined by Jackie Uí Chionna from the University of Galway to discuss the subject of her 2023 biography Queen of Codes: The Secret Life of Emily Anderson, Britain's Greatest Female Codebreaker. Our thanks go to Sarah Langston for voicing our historical documents. The Marriage of Figaro - K. 492 CC PDM 1.0 www.classicals.de Image: © Dr. Dagmar von Bushe-Weise#BPark, #Bletchleypark, #WW2, #Enigma, #Italy, #Galway
Why does someone who has led in extreme, high-pressure environments write a book about mindfulness and resilience? In this episode, I sit down with Ash Alexander-Cooper, OBE - former elite military commander and author of Mindful Soldier, to talk about the lived experiences that shaped his leadership and the lessons earned along the way. We explore why he wrote the book, what real-world leadership under pressure taught him about responsibility and resilience, and how he now works with leaders to build steadiness from the inside out. Each chapter of Mindful Soldier includes practical tools and exercises, making this more than a story. It is a guide people can actively apply in their own lives and leadership. We also discuss the individuals and organizations this work has already impacted. Grounded. Practical. Reflective.

This episode I am reading from Admir Serrano's book 'Nights on the Other Side: How I Discovered My Immortality' Nights on the Other Side” is a book that invites us to look at life from a different perspective: more lucid, more open, and less fearful. Admir describes out-of-body experiences with clarity, combining his personal testimony with scientific references. But above all, he conveys the sense that we are not alone and that we are something more than we believe. Bio I am a Brazilian-American researcher, writer and lecturer on paranormal phenomena such as out-of-body experiences (OBEs), near-death experiences (NDEs), deathbed visions (DBVs), after- death communication (ADC), reincarnation, mediumship and the afterlife. And an unabashed believer in our survival of physical death and the immortality of the spirit. My interest in these subjects was triggered after I began having spontaneous OBEs, back in the year 2000, and I wanted to understand the phenomenon. Since then, I have had hundreds of lucid and amazing experiences which have proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are immortal beings. Aware of the sadness that death of a loved one can cause – and I have experienced it myself – I have made it my life's mission to spread the notion that there is no death, that only the body dies, and since we are not our body, we survive death – unscathed. For my own edification regarding the dynamics of physical death, I have worked as a hospice volunteer providing spiritual support to terminally ill patients as they waited for their time to cross over to the other side of life. And this is what death is, a change of worlds, the end of one mode of living, the physical, to the beginning of a spiritual existence. I have bachelor's degrees in psychology and liberal studies, and a master's in theology. I am an avid reader with a broad interest in world and religious history, anthropology, geography, world affairs, and the humanities. I have written five books in my native Portuguese language on death, dying and the afterlife, and two in English on related topics. I write and lecture in both languages, as well as Spanish, the third language I speak. I live in Homestead, Florida, with my wife, two daughters and my lovely grandson. https://www.admirserrano.com/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/ourparanormalafterlifeMy book 'Verified Near Death Experiences' https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DXKRGDFP Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In this transformative episode, host Eric Bennett sits down with Liane Marie Lambert, who experienced an NDE after being hit by a double-decker bus in London over 20 years ago. What started as a traumatic accident that cracked her skull in two became the catalyst for a profound spiritual awakening and life mission.Liane shares her unique NDE (near death experience) perspective, where she experienced herself outside her body (OBE), witnessing both herself on the ground and the frightened bus driver. Though brief, this NDE experience opened a floodgate of spiritual exploration that led her to become an ascension coach and author. The conversation explores consciousness, multi-dimensional existence, karma, and what it means to "ascend from 3D to 5D," with a little woo woo thrown in. Leanne offers practical wisdom on shadow work, releasing karmic entanglements, and living as "walking karma" - a state where negative projections bounce back to their source rather than affecting you. This episode bridges spirituality and traditional religious concepts, showing how different languages describe the same profound truths about human existence and our connection to the divine. Exploring Astral Projection & The Infinite MindIn this deep-dive interview, we explore the extraordinary journey of Nathaniel Solace, who shares a shocking account of how an encounter with what he perceived as "evil itself" actually triggered his first profound astral projection experience. We deconstruct the mechanics of an out-of-body experience (OBE), moving beyond "love and light" to understand the raw energetic shifts that can launch consciousness out of the physical form. From lucid dreaming at age eight to mastering astral travel and navigating the astral plane, Nathaniel discusses the "Gnostic" insights he gained while watching his own body from a third-person perspective. We dive into the vibrational stage, the Kundalini energy rising through the spine, and the thought-responsive environment of the non-physical realms. Whether you are a beginner looking for astral projection techniques or a seasoned explorer of consciousness, this conversation provides a unique look at spiritual warfare, oneness, and the power of the human psyche.
"Marketing's got this incredibly important role to play in generating meaning around the things that matter." Following in the theme of sharing ‘good news' and inspiration… in this episode of Can Marketing Save the Planet, we are joined by Ivo Gormley, OBE, Founder and CEO of GoodGym. Ivo shares the story of how a simple act of running to deliver a newspaper to an older, housebound neighbour evolved into an inspiring movement that is redefining exercise, tackling social isolation and building greener, more connected communities. GoodGym's model is beautifully simple, members walk, run, or cycle to collabortively undertake physical tasks within their local community. Now active in over 65 UK locations, it transforms solitary fitness into meaningful social action which is both fun and rewarding. A pivotal insight from their work highlights a pressing modern issue: "16 to 25 year olds are the most likely to be lonely... It's a fantastic evaluation showing that our activity is particularly powerful for giving people that sense of belonging and identity." The organisation's success is backed by rigorous research from the London School of Economics, which shows that participation leads to “a 27% increase in belonging, a 12% reduction in loneliness, and a 21% increase in life satisfaction.” Ivo sees a major opportunity for Marketers in this space to reposition civic contribution not as a worthy chore, but as a desirable, identity-building activity. "Marketing's got this incredibly important role to play in generating meaning around the things that matter," he argues, emphasising the need to make social progress a core part of an attractive, fun social life. Looking ahead, GoodGym is focusing on engaging younger demographics and scaling its impact, supported by a major media partnership. Ivo's vision is for GoodGym to become a mainstream, default option for exercise and a natural step towards a happier, healthier, and better-connected society. This episode will make you want to get out there and get involved! Tune in as we talk to Ivo about: How turning exercise into community service can create a “triple win” for individuals, neighbours, and local spaces. Why young people are most at risk, and how purposeful, collective action can build powerful belonging and life satisfaction. Why fun and collaborative experiences are key to driving sustained participation and behaviour change. The compelling social impact data from the LSE that proves combining fitness with volunteering is a highly effective. We delve into the stark realities of learning inequality, the crucial role of the science of teaching, and the transformative power of education, even in the face of conflict. Dr. Asyia Kazmi, CEO of WISE (World Innovation Summit for Education), an organization that is part of the Qatar Foundation, helps us explore the challenges and solutions in global education. As a former math teacher, Dr. Kazmi offers specific, evidence-based strategies for improving learning outcomes — including the concept of structured pedagogy — and discusses the nuances of AI and education, urging caution and the need for region-specific, full-stack solutions. Dr. Kazmi emphasizes that improving learning (not just access to schooling) must be the primary goal for policy. She confronts the notion that poverty is an insurmountable barrier to educational success, asserting that educators have a deep responsibility to provide a pathway out of poverty for low-income students. The conversation also delves into the unique challenges of the Arab world, highlighting the 60% learning poverty rate in our region. This episode was produced in collaboration with Qatar Foundation.Find out more about WISE

This weeks guest is Gareth Owen OBE — Former Humanitarian Director at Save the Children UK (2007-2024). Gareth spent over three decades in the humanitarian sector, beginning his career in Somalia in 1993. He co-founded the START Network and served as Chair of the Humanitarian Leadership Academy. Awarded an OBE in 2013 for services to emergency crisis response abroad and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Bath. The End of an Era The conversation explores what Gareth calls the "post-industrial phase" of humanitarianism—a sector that expanded dramatically in the first decades of the 21st century (peaking at $43 billion in 2022) and is now in managed decline. The discussion traces how the business model of big INGOs began failing years before the 2025 funding crisis, with the UK aid budget cuts from 0.7% to 0.3% forcing organizations to retool their approaches.Loss of the Humanitarian Soul A central theme is the perceived loss of what Gareth calls the "humanitarian soul"—the culture, spirit, and sense of something essential being enacted in a courageous and ethical way. External trauma psychologists visiting Save the Children asked "where's the humanitarian soul?" in corporate headquarters, highlighting how institutional survival has often displaced the cause itself.First We Lost Our Soul, Then We Lost the Money The conversation challenges the narrative that 2025's funding cuts created the crisis. Instead, it argues that institutional drift, creeping managerialism, and the "tyranny of being busy" had already hollowed out the sector's capacity for deep thought, debate, and disagreement long before the financial reckoning.Being Human in the Age of AI Referencing the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, Gareth notes that more than half of the top 10 core skills needed for the future are about humanness: resilience, flexibility, leadership, creative thinking, empathy, active listening, and curiosity. In a world dominated by AI, "humans are going to have to be brilliant at being human again."Gareth Owen on DevexPrevious Trumanitarian episode with Gareth (Episode 51 - "Panopticon")Substack: The Humanitarian ApeBooks by Gareth OwenWhen the Music's Over: Intervention, Aid and Somalia(2022) —Repeater BooksUnhealed Wounds: Trauma, Aid and Angola— forthcoming (28 March 2025)Chapter inAmidst the Debris: Humanitarianism and the End of Liberal OrderTopics DiscussedThe Humanitarian Society— A new alumni-style gathering space for sense-making about the state of humanitarianism, launching in early 2025

In this episode of Crossing Faiths, John Pinna speaks with Mandana Hendessi about her career in human rights advocacy and international development across Iraq and Afghanistan, with a particular focus on her novel, The Almond Garden of Kabul (https://www.afsana-press.com/the-almond-garden-of-kabul). Drawing from her real-life experiences providing legal aid and counseling at the Badam Bagh women's prison, Hendessi explores the systemic oppression of women through the lens of "moral crimes" and the contradictions between national law and conservative judicial interpretations. The interview delves into the harrowing realities of sexual abuse and trafficking within the prison system, while also highlighting the profound sense of sisterhood and resilience found among a diverse group of incarcerated women. Ultimately, the conversation examines themes of trauma, institutionalization, and the complexities of translating Western concepts of mental health and empowerment into the cultural and linguistic nuances of Afghan society. Mandana Hendessi (https://www.afsana-press.com/mandana-hendessi) (OBE) is a writer and women's rights advocate whose thirty years in gender equality and humanitarian work have taken her from the corridors of Westminster to the crowded refugee camps of the Middle East and the dimly lit cells of Afghan prisons. These encounters – layered with resilience, grief, and defiance – have given her a rare insight into the human cost of injustice, an insight that continues to infuse her fiction. Lived at the intersection of politics, war, and survival, these experiences shape her writing, which seeks to give voice to those too often silenced.
