Lynda La Plante joins Clare McDonnell to discuss her latest novel, The Scene of the Crime, which follows CSI Jessica Russell and her team as they investigate a high-profile robbery and assault in East London. Now in her eighties, the prolific author talks about the in-depth research behind her writing and what keeps her motivated to write. The family and friends of Simone White who died from alcohol poisoning, along with five others, after drinking shots at a hostel in Laos last year, have launched a successful campaign to introduce alcohol safety classes in schools. Clare speaks to Simone's friend, Bethany Clarke, who was travelling with her, drank the same drinks and has been involved in the campaign. The Women's Rugby World Cup is kicking off in just three weeks' time. The tournament will be hosted in England, and there's growing excitement across all four home nations. Clare finds out more from Katy Daley-McLean, who captained the Red Roses to World Cup victory in 2014.Grace Wolstenholme, a 22-year-old online content creator with cerebral palsy, had her own death faked on TikTok. In May, one of her videos was re-used without her consent in a gruesome 'death hoax'. Clare discusses with journalist Elliot Deady from BBC Essex, who has been following the story, and we hear from Grace herself about the deep impact this incident has had on her.Sara Pascoe is a comedian, and her children don't sleep, her kitchen won't clean itself and her husband “doesn't want to be in it”. Sara's new show - I am a Strange Gloop – is on a UK tour. She stumbles stunned to the stage from the soft play area, with battle-hardened tales to tell on the front line of motherhood.Presented by Clare McDonnell Producer: Louise Corley
Welcome back to a new very special episode of the Pick and Go podcast. A few weeks ago, Piri told the story of meeting some fellas after winning the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and we managed to track them down. So, we reunite Piri and hear from Jordon and Evan about their experience and what it was like for them to meet Piri and drink from the trophy. The Lions have sealed the series against Australia, meaning that the third test is a dead rubber, so we ask the question: What can be done to still add some drama to a dead rubber game. NPC is also kicking off this week and we look at who is looking good to take out the title this year and who might be the surprise package of the season ahead.
We catch up with the Black Ferns Sevens star ahead of the Women's Rugby World Cup.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Black Ferns co-captain Ruahei Demant is promising they'll peak at the right time in their Rugby World Cup title defence. A 33-player squad has been confirmed for the tournament starting in England next month. The hosts are hot favourites - but Demant says they'll be up for it. I was delighted to be joined by Springbok Women head coach Swys de Bruin! Having worked at academy, Franchise & Men's international level as well as being an analyst for SuperSports, there perhaps no one in South Africa more qualified as a rugby educator as Swys. In this podcast I was lucky enough to be able to pick his brains for nearly an hour, covering a wide variety of rugby topics. Swys is of course deep in his preparations with the Springbok women for the Rugby World Cup in England later in 2025. I ask him all about how he has adjusted to coaching in women's rugby and how the women's game is progressing in South Africa. He talked passionately about the diversity in South African rugby and how important it is to draw on the strength that gives the country. He then gave me a fascinating insight into his approach to coaching and how he views himself as a rugby teacher. He tells me how he communicates with his players and how he gets them playing rugby to his vision for the game. He also gave me some brilliant analysis on where rugby is headed and the trends he is seeing across the game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The Black Ferns squad charged with defending the Rugby World Cup title is being named in Wellington today. Thirty-two players will head to England for the tournament which kicks off next month with the aim of lifting the trophy for a third time in a row. Sports reporter Felicity Reid spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.
The 33 have been named. Last night in Upper Hutt the athletes charged with winning the World Cup were announced. 33 wāhine from across our fine motu were named as the Black Ferns to carry on New Zealand's outstanding record at the Women's Rugby World Cup. There were disappointments, notably the omission of one of the stars of the last tournament, the irrepressible Ruby Tui. I'm told Ruby was celebrating the loudest, cheering on the women picked, not sulking over her non selection. This says a lot to me about the sisterhood, the whanau, the strong bond between these women. And they'll need it. Back in the halcyon days, the Ferns were the gold standard. They dominated the game, winning six titles. The first two world tournaments, won by the USA and England, didn't have official recognition from the IRB (now World Rugby), but they have since been retrospectively given official status. In 1998 the Ferns became champions of the world. They have only been beaten once in the comp since then, and that was at the hands of England in 2014. Last time out they shook up the world at home, riding their luck past France in the semi then beating the English in a pulsating final at a chocka Eden Park. Joanah Ngan Woo was the hero that day, swiping a line out ball on her own line to stop the English surge in its tracks. An astonishing end to a spectacular tournament. The energy in the stadium was like nothing I have experienced in a big international rugby fixture. The testosterone that dominates All Black matches, the collective fear of defeat, the barely contained masculine rage didn't exist. It was pure joy. It was a rugby crowd as it should be. Let's hope that continues in England as New Zealand strut their stuff and win again. Not defend their title, win it all over again. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep. 160 : Les Mains Vides ! In this intimate and inspiring episode, Ffion sits down with Welsh and Olympic rugby stars Alisha and Jasmine Joyce-Butchers to talk about their shared IVF journey, navigating fertility while being full-time professional athletes—and a married couple. With the Rugby World Cup looming, Alisha made the emotional decision to put family first, stepping away from the opportunity to compete this year and to focus on starting a family. The couple opens up about the physical and emotional toll of IVF, how they supported each other while training and competing at the highest level, and what it means to prioritize motherhood in the peak of a sporting career. It's a rare and powerful glimpse into the personal lives behind the public profiles—about sacrifice, strength, and redefining what success looks like.Click the follow button to stay up to date on the latest episodes, and leave us a 5 star review! And remember… to keep saying it how it is!Instagram:@sayithowitisspodcast - https://instagram.com/sayithowitisspodcast?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==@ffionalicelewis - https://instagram.com/ffionalicelewis?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==@jasminejoycee - https://www.instagram.com/jasminejoycee/?hl=en@alishabutchers - https://www.instagram.com/alishabutchers/?hl=enTikTok:sayithowitiss - https://www.tiktok.com/@sayithowitisss?_t=8gcJlLFHuPg&_r=1ffionalicelewis - https://www.tiktok.com/@ffionalicelewis?_t=8gcJsxoYsAi&_r=1 Hosted on Acast. An iconic New Zealand rugby coach has released a new book. Stephen Donald has had an iconic, if not turbulent rugby career. He was an All Black for four years, playing from 2008 to 2011, and capped it off by kicking the winning penalty in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Donald joined Piney to discuss that moment, what he's been up to in the years after retiring from the game, and what he makes of the current All Blacks performances. The lads are dressed to impress with some silky threads that lift the spirits and allow the human form to podcast like they have never podcasted before, all thanks to MJ Bale. We have arrived ladies and gentlemen, the first Test Match between the Lions and the Wallabies is soon upon us and the KOKO Crew couldn't be more up and about at the prospect of two great teams doing battle at Suncorp Stadium. To help us along this joyous journey, we have enlisted the help of two very special guests. The first has played over 90 caps for Wales and he was one of the brave men that took down the Wallabies in 2013, it is none other than Dr Jamie Roberts and the other is triple international, cross-code footy legend and rugby media's leading lady Allana Ferguson. Jamie joins the lads for the first half of the show to muse and discuss how both sides will shape up and prepare this week leading into the first Test. We discuss potential tactics, predicted sides and what the Lions will do to navigate this growing laundry list of injured players. Plus, ‘The King' sticks around to give us his ‘Perfect Pour' from the weekend just gone, all thanks to our headline sponsor Guinness, as well as playing a little game of ‘Which Lion Was it Anyway?'We have always said, when one guest leaves you replace them with someone better. Step to the fore Allana Ferguson. All thanks to our great friends at TAB, Allana joined the show to crunch the odds heading into the first Test Match this Saturday in Brisbane. Plus, she unleashes her depth of knowledge to give us a full wrap of the Wallaroos' encouraging loss to the Black Ferns in Wellington and how the ladies are shaping up with the Rugby World Cup on the horizon this August. So in summation, it is time to bloody lock in. We have waited 12 long years to get our chance at revenge against this crimson clad gaggle of geezers and let's not let this one slide. On June 24 1995, the Men's Rugby World Cup saw the Springboks secure a historic 15-12 win against New Zealand in an emotionally charged final at a packed Ellis Park in Johannesburg. As the All Blacks took to the field at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin last night to stagger over the line against the French, I thought about the calls I had on Marcus Lush Nights on Friday, talking about the future of our large stadiums - and in particular of Forsyth Barr Stadium and Wellington's Sky Stadium. It doesn't seem to matter which city you're in across the country, stadiums are problematic. Auckland continues its decade-old debate about whether we need a new multipurpose waterfront stadium and now, what to do with Western Springs. Christchurch rate payers are unhappy about the cost blowouts for their new stadium, Te Kaha - although when it opens I reckon they'll be won over and pretty happy. Wellington has a stadium that's not well designed for rectangle sports - rugby or football - suffers for the city's inclement weather and rarely looks full. Te Kaha has them all spooked. As fans took their seat at Forsyth Barr last night they may have wondered how likely, after Christchurch's shiny new stadium opens next year, they will be to see concerts from artists such as Pink and Ed Sheeran, or All Black tests, in their city again. And they are right to be worried. There is only so much sport to go around, and with more global acts skipping New Zealand, competition is only going to get tougher. We tend to think of large outdoors stadium as a must for a city of a certain size - a required piece of civic infrastructure like a library, theatre or art gallery - but perhaps we're more ambitious than we need to be. Does the South Island really need two covered stadiums? Perhaps not. But if you live in Christchurch you're thinking about Christchurch, not contemplating what it means for the stadium down the road. Forsyth Barr was conceived before the Christchurch Earthquake, opening in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. So Forsyth Barr always expected to compete with Christchurch, and obviously there was confidence it could. You could say Dunedin has had an unexpected advantage over the last 14 years. But now with competing stadiums, it's on the council and stadium management to step up and find a way to ensure the stadium remains an asset for the city and not a white elephant. The saying ‘built it and people will come' doesn't apply to stadiums. You need to convince people to choose your stadium and your city to perform in, and then convince the locals to attend. Everyone has a role in making stadiums work. Look at Eden Park. The recent change to allow up to 12 concerts a year to be held there has seen a surge in fondness for the place - even if it's mind-blowing how long it's taken to happen. The benefit are obvious on show weekends. Last night looked like a great night in Dunedin. The crowd in full voice, clearly enjoying the entertainment - both the stadium and the All Blacks got the job done. Gee, I hope it lasts. It's going to be really difficult, but hopefully Dunedin will find a way to make sure Forsyth Barr remains a source of pride. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ep. 158 : INEXORABLE ! Today on the radio show, we caught up with Ian Foster. Appointed as head coach 2019, Ian Foster led the All Blacks through one of the most tumultuous periods of the team's 120-year history. His new book Leading Under Pressure is a fascinating look into the pressure cooker inner-sanctum of the world's most famous rugby team. With revelations about Foster's time in the job, it also delves into the politics of rugby, and the events preceding the dramatic 2023 Rugby World Cup. You can grab his book here https://www.harpercollins.co.nz/9781775542858/leading-under-pressure/ Cheers, Fozzy - We bloody appreciate ya!
Ian Foster was one of the more polarising All Blacks coaches in recent memory. He took the helm after the superb record of Sir Steve Hansen, and during his time there were constant discussions surrounding his job security. During his tenure he had a win rate of 70% and lost New Zealand the number one world ranking, but at the same time, he won 4 Bledisloe Cups, 4 Freedom Cups, and 3 Rugby Championships, as well as coming within a point of winning the Rugby World Cup. Foster is still in the coaching game over in Japan, but in the meantime, he's written a book called ‘Leading Under Pressure', that tells the story of his time with the All Blacks. He told Mike Hosking he had never intended to write a book, but felt it was an important story to tell. “A lot of the feedback we got is that people actually saw a team go through a journey over those four years,” he said. “I just felt that I almost owed it to my management team and a lot of my leading players to actually tell the story of the journey of that particular team.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
