At the turn of the 20th century, Japan was on a roll. After taking Formosa and Penghu from Qing China in 1895, Japan beat mighty Russia in 1905. Eager to show the world its newfound economic strength – and to highlight the successful development of its new colony – the Japanese parliament voted vast sums of money to sponsor the Japan-British Exhibition. It was held in London from May to October 1910. Among the most “wild” displays the Japanese brought to London was a recreated Paiwan village, with live Indigenous Paiwan Formosans! Since the very beginning, World Expos have been both markers and interpreters of history. From displaying steam trains at the London Expo in 1851 to unveiling the QWERTY keyboard at the Philadelphia World's Fair in 1876. Now, in an era where it's more important than ever to leverage technology to our advantage, Expo 2020 Dubai is tackling some of the questions surrounding how we actually do that. This podcast is by Expo 2020 Dubai and produced by Kerning Cultures Network.

A rare convention appearance from the current Doctor Matt Smith, this was recorded on 26th October 2012 in a packed hall at London Expo held at Excel London. The audio quality isn't ideal but bear in mind that I almost didn't get in due to the crowds at this event and I was stuck at the back of the hall. You can see my photos of London Expo here http://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/sets/72157631862444816/ and video of the start of Matt and Caroline's panel here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l86hqbwuLPQ End theme is Dr Who Gypsy Guitar by Thrip If you want to send me comments or feedback you can email them to tdrury2003@yahoo.co.uk or contact me on twitter where I'm @tdrury or send me a friend request and your comments to facebook where I'm Tim Drury and look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/3711029536/in/set-72157621161239599/ in case you were wondering.
A bit of convention coverage this week as I bring you the Danny Devito panel from the recent London Expo convention, Danny was mostly plugging his new film The Lorax but he also talks about other film and stage work. We take a trip back to May 2011 for the Futurama Panel at London Expo, sadly the audio quality is far from perfect due to the acoustics of the venue. Here's a video of part of the panel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crPMCtrqXdQ and here's a link to all the photos I took at the event http://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/sets/72157626834663506/ End theme this week is an 8 Bit version of the Futurama theme by ScrapBrainZone which you can find here on you tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weWHR6liKio& If you want to send me comments or feedback you can email them to tdrury2003@yahoo.co.uk or contact me on twitter where I'm @tdrury or send me a friend request and your comments to facebook where I'm Tim Drury and look like this http://www.flickr.com/photos/tdrury/3711029536/in/set-72157621161239599/ in case you were wondering.
