Send us a textIs there a more terrifying writer in the world than Edgar Allan Poe, nor a more fun one to read with a child with than Theodore Geisel, "Dr. Seuss" ?  I don't think so. In this episode we chronicle two of the most extremely different authors of our entire series. Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the strangest and most horrifying stories ever written. "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" "The Mask of the Red Death" The Fall of the House of Usher", "Tell Tale Heart", The Pit and the Pendulum" the list goes on and on. But for all of that he is actually considered the father of the modern detective novel which is what he actually made his living doing. Though he struggled financially his entire life. His poetry is equally famous and perhaps no other poem stands out at all like "The Raven" which we will feature in this episode. The actor most closely associated with Poe is Vincent Price who made some of the best movies ever made in the 1950s and 1960s. Poe's life was as interesting as his writing and his death just as mysterious, we will tell you the story and feature his writing tips too, through the episode. Dr. Seuss, was a part of every child's life under the age of 8 in every home I have ever visited, you at least see one of his books. "The Cat in the Hat", "The Lorax", "Green Eggs and Ham," "Oh the Places we will Go" , "The Sneeches" , "One fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish", "Horton Hears a Who?" , my personal favorite "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas", and even a book found two decades after he passed away, hidden in a box at his house, titled "What Pet Should I get" What an extraordinary legacy to have had such an impact on the lives of children everywhere, with characters that never existed until he dreamed them up, mixed with timeless themes, that match perfectly with his rhymes. In this episode we introduce you to the man, his books, and his writing advice.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Pumping Up Pollution During Government Shutdowns, with Neha Khanna and Ruohao Zhang

In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Neha Khanna and Ruohao Zhang about how government shutdowns prevent active air-pollution monitoring—and end up leading to more air pollution from coal-fired power plants while monitoring is on hiatus. Professor Khanna from Binghamton University and Assistant Professor Zhang from Pennsylvania State University published a related study, with another coauthor, examining the impact of the 2018–2019 government shutdown on pollution emissions from federally regulated coal-fired power plants. The authors found that the hiatus on pollution monitoring by federal employees, who were furloughed during the shutdown, led to an increase in the types of pollutants that required manual regulation at power plants. In this podcast episode, Khanna and Zhang reflect on how these findings may likewise inform how pollution rates may have changed during the government shutdown that ended just last week. Recorded in the heart of Tilburg—a Dutch city that has transformed from one of Europe's hottest urban heat islands into a showcase of regreening—this episode explores the hidden worlds that decide whether city trees live or die. Arborist and Senior Advisor Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard joins the Internet of Nature Podcast to talk about why soils matter more than species, and how climate-adaptive growing places can turn trees into the new sewer system. We discuss why most city trees never make it past adolescence, why climate-ready trees won't save us without climate-ready soils, and how stormwater makes or breaks survival. Erwin explains why tree professionals can't afford to be “softies,” why spreadsheets might be the Lorax's greatest ally, and how making civil engineers happy is the secret to long-lived urban forests.Plus: the tragedy of cutting down trees before they reach maturity, what it takes to plant for 80 years instead of election cycles, and why, for Erwin, the city only truly comes alive when its people can sit in the shade of a tree.

That's the tough question we're asking in today's episode, and the answer might change how you see both technology and energy forever. We're diving headfirst into whether artificial intelligence is truly a tool for abundance or just another story of progress that leaves us worse off. Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "Unlock the secret to a healthier heart, increased energy levels, and transform your cardiovascular fitness like never before.": CardioMiracle.com/TBNS Think about it: the Lorax warned us about cutting down truffula trees for a quick buck, but are we repeating that story today with AI? People celebrate chatbots, automation, and algorithms, but nobody asks the deeper question—what powers it all? The servers behind ChatGPT don't run on “good vibes” or environmental slogans. They run on massive amounts of energy, and right now, that means fossil fuels. In this episode, we break down the uncomfortable truth: without fossil fuels, AI doesn't exist. As Trump's tariffs kick in, the Republican party is suddenly spouting anti-consumerist rhetoric that would make the Lorax smile. Should we cheer on this accidental experiment in economic shrinkage, or will this ham-fisted set of trade policies cause a backlash against the proponents of degrowth? As political confusion reigns, we offer eco-localism as the no-regrets way to build community resilience in the face of unprecedented ineptitude that probably won't go away anytime soon. Welcome to the last Air Health Our Health podcast of Season Five. This is a collaboration with the American Thoracic Society's Breathe Easy podcast, of which I am a new host. We produce over 450 million tons of plastic each year, the majority of which accumulates in the environment- it is vital to understand how that impacts us. For today's episode, I interview Dr Adam Soloff, PhD a researcher at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center of the University of Pittsburgh in the department of cardiothoracic surgery and immunology. He describes himself as the “Lorax of the Thorax” and walks us through research on how ever-present microplastics that we inhale can seed tissues throughout the body and what that does to our immune system. So what can you do? Look at where you are using plastic in your own life and see if you can replace it with a healthier option. Few options here.Find out what can be done to reduce plastics in your community. Look up your members of Congress and share with them your concern about dismantling important science-based support for health at the federal level, whether the NIH, EPA, CDC, VA and more. Then, look up your city councilperson and state legislator to ask what they are doing to help prevent plastic pollution and find out what you can do to help. Finally, be sure to enjoy the beautiful planet on which we all live and take at least one step to keep it beautiful and healthy. Find what you can do and do it. None of us have to do everything, but we can all do something.

This episode begins our series on "What you may have missed at ATS 2025."We produce over 450 million tons of plastics each year, the vast majority of which has accumulated in the environment. Increasing evidence suggests that microplastics can accumulate in a number of different organs such as the brain, but what of the lungs? In this episode, Adam Soloff, PhD (self-described "Lorax of the Thorax"), associate professor, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, walks us through his research to find out what these ever-present microplastics do to the lungs and the pulmonary immune system in particular. Spoiler alert: once inhaled, microplastics pass through the lung seeding many tissues of the body including the heart, brain, gut, liver, and spleen. "We found it everywhere we looked," said Dr. Soloff whose team's work begins to shed light on how microplastics damage lung immunity and may predispose us to lung disease in the future.4:16 What is a microplastic?6:19 Where is the most established evidence of how microplastics affects our health?

From butterflies to birds, experts and citizen scientists unit in a shared mission to monitor and protect nature's habitats. On my show this week, we zoom in on the declining richness of Luxembourg's biodiversity and why it matters. From powerful EU projects to local volunteers counting butterflies, my guests show how citizen science can be crucial to help collect data in a clear and scientific manner. Dr. Youri Martin, Senior R&T Engineer in biodiversity at LIST, is at the heart of Luxembourg's monitoring systems. As principal investigator of the BIODIV project, Youri and his team track protected species using standardised data methods. He coordinates the Luxembourg Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, where volunteers conduct pollinator transect walks and pan trapping to observe bees, butterflies and other insects. “Consistency in data is everything. It allows us to see real trends,  and the picture is concerning.” Over 60% of butterfly mass abundance has declined in just over a decade. Citizen science has gripped John Park, who created Bee Together.  From identifying butterflies to pan-trapping pollinators, John works hands-on with LIST and is cited among contributors to the new Butterfly Atlas of Luxembourg. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not,” he quotes from The Lorax. John's work has even contributed to published research on genetic drift in insects . Joining us from Austria was Gerid Hager, a research scholar at IIASA and a key figure in the EU's FRAMEwork project and Urban ReLeaf initiative. Gerid emphasised the strength of collaborative data collection from farmers and citizens alike. “This isn't just about data, it's about community, ownership, and the cultural shift towards biodiversity-friendly agriculture.” On the birding front, Patric Lorgé, field ornithologist at natur&ëmwelt, has spent decades building Luxembourg's bird monitoring network. With over 120 volunteers, he has standardised the national tracking of bird populations and authored Vögel Luxemburgs. Patric has personally observed 283 of the 336 bird species in Luxembourg, contributing vital knowledge to EU conservation frameworks like Natura 2000. Digitally documenting this natural world is Paul Braun, Digital Curator at the National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg (MNHNL). As the Luxembourg node manager for GBIF and site manager of iNaturalist.lu, Paul promotes citizen science through technology. The iNaturalist app, he explains, allows users to photograph and identify wild species globally. "The data doesn't just sit there—it feeds into research, policy, and international conservation." The show also highlighted the upcoming City Nature Challenge, a global bioblitz encouraging everyone to document as many species as possible in their city using iNaturalist. Last year Luxembourg contributed over 9,000 observations. “This is where science becomes personal and powerful,” says Paul. So, whether you're walking transects, installing pan traps, identifying birds or just using an app in your garden, you are a vital part of Luxembourg's biodiversity mission. The data you collect today could shape conservation policy tomorrow. As Youri said, “We can't protect what we don't understand. From butterflies to birds, experts and citizen scientists unite in a shared mission to monitor and protect nature's habitats. I feel like I should just get out of the way and let my guest, Scott Grace, write this introduction, because honestly? I could barely keep up with him during our conversation! He was so funny, so irreverent, and so ridiculously talented...I was left in the dust! As Scott's bio says, he's a bit of a cross of John Denver, Robin Williams and Dr. Seuss all rolled into one! And channeling all that greatness has been part of Scott's work in this world, even from a young age. This great work of his is in service to inspire us, to urge us to greater and greater things...and to remind us, that humor, and intelligence and kindness, will get us far. To check out Scott's website click here. To check out his YouTube click here! Thanks to all of you who listen, and REMEMBER, ratings and reviews are where it's at! Please do consider doing either, or both!! I will love you forever! Your bit of beauty is this video from the 70's, the original "The Lorax." I loved this film...and this is just a bit of it...because the topic it talked about, the destruction of our natural world, hit hard as a kid. I was changed forever, and perhaps, it still shapes me. Yes, Dr. Seuss is a controversial figure...and has a darker reputation than when I was a kid, but this movie is relevant still, and urges us all to be better stewards of our environment. And that, we should be grateful to Dr. Seuss for, because honestly? We need the reminder!

This week Dave and Jeff are back to Ovid for a couple more vignettes! The guys start with the bizarre tale of Erysichthon (the "Earth-Ripper") who lives up to his name by lumberjacking a sacred grove of Ceres. But why? Is this a prescient Lorax pre-boot? A morality play about late-stage capitalism? Or ust a guy who desperately wanted that Rumpus Room house addition? We're starving for answers. Then it's on to Cycnus ("Swany") and his fateful encounter with Achilles on the plains of Troy. Has Achilles met his match with someone as nearly "invincible" as he is, and who talks as much smack? How does this "win" of Achilles set the stage for his own demise? Of the three Cynci known in myth, why is this li'l cygnet the only who gets the full-fledged Metamorphoses treatment? Also, don't miss guest spots by Swan Carlos, Mr. T, and Stuart Little. I pity the fool who doesn't tune in!
