Following Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s widely publicized and false claims about autism, writer Jodie Hare joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V Ganeshananthan to talk about the politics of neurodiversity and the importance of autistic communities. Hare, who was diagnosed as autistic in adulthood, explains how the pathologization of the autistic population is historically connected to industrialization and capitalism. She also discusses the discriminatory and criminal history of searching for a “cure” for autism through a series of cruel methods, which have all failed. She challenges the idea that there are normal and abnormal ways of living, and reads from her book, Autism Is Not a Disease: The Politics of Neurodiversity.  To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching).

Maybe it's the lousy Smarch weather, but we're in a bit of a mood to start of this month. Not because our special guests aren't awesome. We had so much fun learning about qualitative analyses in exploring RBT burnout with Dr. Nicole Gravina and how to be more ethically responsible in creating meaningful goals for autistic adolescents and adults with Dr. Shanna Bahry. And not because we're not reviewing tough issues like turnover in human services, deconstructing ableist practices in the medical model, and respectfully disagreeing with the abolitionist neurodiversity critique. Now that I'm writing about all the awesome episodes coming out this month, I can't even remember why we sound so crabby. Oh, right…the state of the United States political system. And rude emails. The lengths that I covered last week that the Nazis went to in order to keep the people happy were not done for the love of leisure. The demands of the Third Reich and its rearmament drive were all-consuming and behind the facade of a happy, prosperous Germany was a reality of unrelenting labor.    Bibliography for this episode:  Kershaw, Ian Popular Opinion & Political Dissent in the Third Reich: Bavaria 1933-1945 Oxford University Press 1983 Gellately, Robert Hitler's True Believers: How Ordinary People Became Nazis Oxford University Press 2020 Tooze, Adam Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy Penguin Books 2006 Evans, Richard J. The Third Reich in Power Penguin Press 2005 Kershaw, Ian Hitler 1936-1945: Nemesis W.W. The aggression and militarization of society in Nazi Germany may have been most openly expressed in its rearmament and bellicose foreign policy, but a critical element too was in how that state engaged with its own people. Getting everyone onboard with a general war was no small task for a state in its infancy, and this week I start taking a look at how Nazism engaged with people on the street.    Bibliography for this episode:  Gellately, Robert Hitler's True Believers: How Ordinary People Became Nazis Oxford University Press 2020 Tooze, Adam Wages of Destruction: The Making and Breaking of the Nazi Economy Penguin Books 2006 Evans, Richard J. The Third Reich in Power Penguin Press 2005 Emondson, C. The HR-ification of the Democratic Party, https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/11/democrats-are-the-hr-department-of-political-parties/680634/ Kamala Harris and the Democrats sold themselves as the party of change, freedom, and not being weird. But many American voters saw them instead as prigs, Stepford wives, morons, and condescending smarty-pants. The Democrats didn't actually embody all of these shortcomings, separately or simultaneously—it's difficult to be both smart and dumb, seductive and prudish. I've been thinking this past week about how the Democratic Party is seen, and it hit me: The Democratic Party resembles that most American of institutions: the HR department. Like human resources, the Democrats are a party of norms, procedure, bureaucracy, DEI initiatives, rule following, language policing, and compliance. It is in this way that the Democratic Party feels not so much infuriating and threatening, but just kind of an annoying bummer. In the same way that an HR manager might respond when asked for clarity, Kamala Harris frequently speaks in the lexicon of lawyerly avoidance. https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://rumble.com/lukeford, https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/ Soundcloud MP3s: https://soundcloud.com/luke-ford-666431593 Code of Conduct: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=125692 http://lukeford.net Email me: lukeisback@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter.com/lukeford, Best videos: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=143746 Support the show | https://www.streamlabs.com/lukeford, https://patreon.com/lukeford, https://PayPal.Me/lukeisback Facebook: http://facebook.com/lukecford Book an online Alexander Technique lesson with Luke: https://alexander90210.com Feel free to clip my videos. Yesterday's US consumer price data was less weird—no 4% monthly increases in rent in Detroit (as in March). The detail showed for almost every business sector, there is deflation somewhere in the United States. For the benefit of non-economists (like the Chair of the Federal Reserve) this is not remotely consistent with sticky prices.

Markets came off support at the 100-DMA, rallied to the 50-DMA and failed in a first test of resistance. No dramatic surprise. The important thing now is to hold support at the 100-DMA. The month of April was somewhat weak, and historically, that leads to a stronger May; we'll see if that plays out because May tends to be a weaker-performing month, particularly during Presidential Election Years. There is potential for this correction to drag out, and the risk is the extreme deviation which remains at the 200-DMA at around 4,700. There is another 5% decline needed to get down to that level. Peak-to-trough, that would encompass a 10% correction that we've been talking about. And that would be completely normal. What a normal life is like for the rest of the world does not apply in Gaza, and it almost never has. Even before October 7, electricity only came on for an average of four to six hours a day and nearly 98 per cent of water was undrinkable. Transportation options were always limited and housing was a challenge in one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Now, after more than six months of war, around 50 to 70 percent of housing has been destroyed. The cost of damage between October and January alone is estimated by the World Bank at $18.5 billion. In this week's Beyond The Headlines, host Nada AlTaher explores whether life in Gaza can ever go back to any kind of normality, looking at the path to rebuilding the strip and the mammoth task at hand. She speaks to Rami Al Azzeh, economist with the Assistance to the Palestinian People Unit at UNCTAD, and Amira Aker, a postdoctoral fellow at Canada's Universite Laval who specialises in epidemiology and environmental health.

In her work, Argentine author Samanta Schweblin explores the feeling of eeriness that accompanied her childhood. Samanta was born in Buenos Aires in 1978, just after the start of a violent dictatorship. But, while violence surrounded her growing up, there was also art: her grandfather was a famous artist who began to train her as a writer when she was six years old. Together they took trips, stole books, rode the train without tickets and went to plays and museums—all in the name of artistic training. It worked. Samanta's work has been translated into 25 languages and long-listed for the International Booker Prize. In this episode, Samanta shares the origins of her fascination with the blurry lines between our perceptions of what's normal and what's strange.

Beyond simplistic narratives of normativity and difference, this groundbreaking book exposes the very myth of the 'normal' brain as a product of intensified capitalism.Exploring the rich histories of the neurodiversity and disability movements, Robert Chapman shows how the rise of capitalism created an 'empire of normality' that transformed our understanding of the body into that of a productivity machine.Neurodivergent liberation is possible - but only by challenging the deepest logics of capitalism. Awareness around and diagnoses of neurodiversity have exploded in recent years, but as Robert argues, we are still missing a wider understanding of how we got here and why. In today's episode we discuss the rich histories of the neurodiversity and disability movements, as well as how our understanding of mental and physical health and disability has been profoundly shaped by the development of capitalism. Hello Music fans, Welcome to a special presentation podcast by the hosts of the Monthly Music Challenge, Cosmic Bos (one S). Although this is the podcast feed for the MMC, it is also the place that Cosmic Bos put their special presentations and some other guff, like, if they want to chat about something for some reason. Cosmic Bos are Nick and Andy Jackson, brothers from the South of the UK, making music and music videos and sharing them with the world. Virtual Normality 3 is our third EP in the Virtual Normality series (you can tell by the 3 after the words Virtual and Normality), with the first one having come out way back in 2021 before the Monthly Music Challenge even existed, the second one hit internet shelves in 2022 mere months before the MMC was launched, and then this third one slipped onto the intershelves on the final day of 2023 (so we can still claim it came out in '23). https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-normality-3 A little Cosmic Bos history on this subject: Virtual Normality started life as a showcase for Nick and Andy of their songwriting skills, at the time, Cosmic Bos were making an improvised music podcast, with Nick and Andy working with Joe Philogene and producing 4 epic Full album improv sessions in 2021. 'Space Babies' was born from the improv sessions and was given a coat of production paint to open the EP, with 'Take it Easier', 'It's Always You' and 'Ride Another Wave' being used from the songbooks. 'Stay Inside' was a new song made with TexMex Shaman and loving placed on the EP. Flash forward a year and Cosmic Bos release Virtual Normality 2, having won a 'Judge's Choice' Award for their album '2 A.M it's Mission Time' it was decided that Nick and Andy would give the songwriting their full focus. VN2 contained 4 songs that had been born from the Music Weeklies challenge on X (formerly Twitter) as well as a Cosmic Bos remix of a song by Andrew Hartshorn and Natalie Williams Calhoun. It also served as the blueprint for the Monthly Music Challenge. At the end of the first year of the Monthly Music Challenge, Cosmic Bos turned their attention to Virtual Normality 3, knowing that they wanted it to showcase what the future may hold, just as the previous two VN EP's had. And that is what this podcast is about. Come on a journey with Nick Jackson and Andy Jackson of Cosmic Bos as they discuss their new 5 track EP Virtual Normality 3, which you can buy on bandcamp right now here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/virtual-normality-3 Also, if you fancy a free copy of the EP, then all you need to do is purchase our CD from Monochrome Motif Records here https://cosmicbos.bandcamp.com/album/mmc-1-2023-album - Containing our 10 songs for the first year of the Monthly Music Challenge, and a bonus free digital download of Virtual Normality 3. Ep. 110 (Part 1 of 2) | Colette Baron-Reid and Dr. Bob Weathers shine a bright light on the big picture state of addiction in our fragmented culture today—how people have become addicted to disconnection, dissociation, and identifying as victims in addition to substance use and other more traditional addictions—as well as sharing the essential elements and practices that have made their sustained long-term recovery possible. Dr. Bob explains that the first step in addressing addiction is to humanize the conversation around it and why. Our tendency toward addiction is universal, embedded in human nature itself, for one. And research shows that people who have suffered childhood trauma are five to ten times more susceptible to becoming addicts—their stress threshold five to ten times lower than other people's, their stress hormones five to ten times higher. Studies also show that addiction is the most highly stigmatized mental disorder of all. It is humbling to realize what addicts are up against, calling us to compassion, understanding, and action. Both Colette and Bob are solidly grounded in long-term sobriety and deeply dedicated to helping others out of their suffering. Top down, intellectual information is clearly not adequate to sustain recovery—so what is? Spiritual connection, social connection, shadow work, healing shame, surrendering. As Colette says, “In recovery, you discover there is something greater than yourself, your pain, your story, and your limitations—this is the solace.” There comes a turning point when it stops being all about us, and the desire to serve arises. With service comes the all-important experience of belonging. As Bob relates, “It's not just about not drugging or drinking—I want a vital life.” And what is missing on a global, universal level? Again, connection and community. Guy is in the hosting seat for the cups as usual and he is joined by Dave & Trev to take a deep dive into the League Cup quarter final against West Ham. The trio discuss the game in great detail as the reds dismantled David Moyes' side 5-1. They also analyse some of the performances and the roles played in the game with Darwin impressing on the left hand side, Elliott performing really well on the right, Jones answering many a critic, and the lack of overly complex "galaxy brain" tactics perhaps allowing the beautiful free flowing football.
