This week, Tommy is joined by actor, singer and songwriter Ben Barnes! On the acting side, Ben has become known as “the king of fantasy.” He starred as Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise before going on to create iconic performances in Dorian Gray, Westworld, Marvel’s The Punisher, and of course, the fan-favorite villain in the wildly popular Netflix series, Shadow and Bone. Earlier this year Ben released his debut album, “Where The Light Gets In.” Inspired by the soul and pop music he loves so much, the album is about the different stages of a relationship; beginnings, tension, sorrow, sex, love, endings, nostalgia. It’s about how our history and our scars configure to make us who we are in this moment. Today, Ben opens up about how he had to get used to feeling more exposed as he became a household name, why now was the right time in his life to put aside a wildly successful acting career to focus on his music, the fears and pressures that came with introducing a different side of himself to the world, going after his dreams at a point in his life that might feel like its too late to many, why age is just a number and shouldn’t dictate your dreams, what he was hoping to achieve with his beautiful debut album, how he reveals a much more personal side to himself for the first time through his music, if he has any interest in giving the fans what they want: a role in the Harry Potter world, his thoughts on reprising his villainous role in Shadow and Bone, how the most critical things ever said about him were said by himself, and so much more. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) lashes out against the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians at a hearing on sports betting on December 17, 2024. According to Tillis, the Eastern Band is using gaming revenues to fund lobbying efforts in Washington, D.C. He claimed the money was being used to oppose federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe, a state-recognized group in North Carolina. " Well, I just happen to be spending a lot of quality time with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, debating why they're spending all this money that they're making off of gambling, trying to prevent a tribe that has been denied recognition for 130 years from getting recognition in the state of North Carolina," Tillis said at a hearing of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. During his remarks, Tillis displayed a poster titled "The Network Working Against the Lumbee Tribe." It included the seal of the Eastern Band and the photo and name of Wilson Pipestem, a prominent lobbyist who has worked for the Eastern Band. Despite the presence of the imagery, Tillis referred to Pipestem as "William," repeating a slip-up he made on the U.S. Senate floor on November 21, 2024. The poster also featured the logo of the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma, along with the name of Ben Barnes, the chair of the organization and the chief of the Shawnee Tribe. Tillis is the sponsor of S.521, the Lumbee Fairness Act. The bill would extend federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe, whose leaders have been trying to gain acknowledgment as an Indian tribe for more than a century. The Eastern Band, the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma and numerous other tribes and tribal organizations have been calling on the Lumbees to go through the federal acknowledgment process at the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Lumbees are instead pursuing recognition through an act of Congress. The Senate hearing, titled "America's High-Stakes Bet on Legalized Sports Gambling," did not feature any tribal or Indian Country witnesses. The Rolling Stone's song ‘You Can't Always Get What You Want,' is my earworm this season. This week, I started to pick apart how wants, needs and arcs are connected. Dorian Gray is a classic cautionary tale about selling your soul. Dorian arrives in London as a beautiful but naive young man and dies with a rotten and decrepit soul - he is unredeemable. Dorian gets what he wants, but he doesn't get what he needs because there are no consequences for his actions. Understanding how wants, needs and character arcs is an essential story tool. Good exposition is invisible. Valerie highlights how exposition is masterfully delivered and where it fails. Exposition is all about information management - the what and the how. -M“Understanding wants and needs is important for story arcs because they determine the protagonist's motivations and actions.” Melanie HillRelated Story Nerd EpisodesThe Woman King (Season 8 Episode 2)The Social Network (Season 12 Episode 1) For access to writing templates and worksheets, and more than 70 hours of training (all for free), subscribe to Valerie's Inner Circle. To learn to read like a writer, visit Melanie's website.Follow Valerie on X, Instagram and Threads @valerie_francisFollow Melanie on X, Instagram and Facebook @MelanieHillAuthor

For the first time, the United States is owning up to its role in the deplorable treatment of Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian children at Indian Boarding Schools over more than a century. The report from the U.S. Department of Interior documents the deaths of nearly 1,000 children at boarding schools—many in collaboration with Catholic and other Christian institutions. The report includes distressing testimony collected at public meetings around the country from boarding school survivors and their relatives, detailing the personal costs of the government's attempts to eradicate Native cultures and languages. It recommends the federal government not only formally apologize, but also establish a path and funding to account for the wrongs and the continuing harm resulting from it. In today's episode we're chatting with Ben Barnes. This British actor (and skilled musician) has charmed audiences as the heroic prince in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and surprised them as the enigmatic Logan Delos in HBO's science fiction thriller Westworld. His love for storytelling began early: on stage performing with the National Youth Music Theatre. Since then his career has told the story of an artist who possesses true grit, a love for craft, and a desire to explore whatever he hasn't done. He shares how blind persistence landed him his first agent, and how a secret injury helped him create one of his most recognizable roles. For Ben, perspective and perseverance is key. Moving through the peaks and valleys of this industry requires trusting what you have to offer and choosing to be empowered regardless of circumstance. And that's exactly what Ben continues to do. His work includes an array of diverse film and TV credits such as Easy Virtue, By The Gun, Seventh Son, Big Wedding, Sons of Liberty, The Punisher, Gold Digger and a lead role on Netflix's soon to be series Shadow and Bone. Watching the first season is highly recommended to give context for this season's shenanigans with Alina/Mal and the Crows. A few important things are discussed including: Are all pirates just privateers, is Mal afraid of the power of women, and is Ben Barnes actually evil in real life?! Stay tuned until the end for some honest reviews of Daisy Jones and the Six and the new Chris Rock special...

COUNT(Y) THE VOTE w SCRUTINEERS; SAVE THE COURT IN WISCONSIN; JAIL THE TRAITORS FROM 1980   Our GREEGREE #130 begins with the great EMILY LEVY and the new county-based rapid result vote count program she has just unveiled.   With new computer software aiming to quickly and accurately count votes on the county level Emily hopes to avoid the impact of inevitable election inaccuracies.   We then visit the all-important April 4 Wisconsin state Supreme Court race could hold the key to the 2024 presidential and Congressional elections.   Abortion rights, gun laws, gerrymandering and voting right are all at stake in a race where in many cases over 90% of the electorate is unaware of the upcoming vote.   Emily emphasizes the need to join with the Center for Common Ground to do phone banking and other grassroots work to up the turnout.        With TATANKA BRICCA, LARRY BENSKY and more we then plunge into the newly confirmed 1980 OCTOBER SURPRISE treason by which Ronald Reagan took the White House.   Long considered a fringe “conspiracy theory,” Texas pol Ben Barnes has recently underscored that Team Reagan did in fact promise the Iranians that if they kept American hostages until after the voting, Reagan would give them a “better deal.”   The hostages were in fact released precisely as Reagan was inaugurated, and there is no longer any doubt how that happened.   Larry then reveals hard evidence that Ron DeSantis participated in actual torture during his “service” at Guantanamo Bay.   WENDI LEDERMAN and CAROLINA AMPUDIA follow with a laundry list of the increasingly fascistic policies of DeSantis's Florida regime.   We will follow next week with more on this crucial Wisconsin election….and with the far right shift of the DeSantis juggernaut.      For the second hour of today's show we take off from HEIDI HUTNER's new WOMEN OF THREE MILE ISLAND and go deep into the nuclear power issue in anticipation of the March 28 anniversary of the 1979 accident.   To hear that presentation, check out www.electionprotection2024.org.  And we'll see you next week!!!

On this episode we're neck deep in the murky waters of American identity - we're peering into the life of the Shawnee leader, Tecumseh. I want to understand his social and political context, the foundations of what built him, while trying to understand the extraordinary leadership of the man whose name means “a panther crossing the sky.” He was a hunter, a warrior, and an exceptional orator. He was a revolutionary leader who was a genius. Though he was considered an enemy of the United States, his legacy was grafted into our national character, and I believe he's an American hero. In this series we're going to hear from the current Chief of the Shawnee Nation, Ben Barnes, New York Times Best Selling author, Robert Morgan, acclaimed historian and author, Peter Cozzens, and Native American historian, Dr. Dave Edmunds. In all my work on this-here Bear Grease podcast, I don't think I've ever had to dig as deep into American's boneyard to get the goods. I really doubt, you're going to want to miss this one...
