Snuggled up next to Spain on the Iberian Peninsula and perched on the westernmost edge of Europe, Portugal has a long love affair with the sea. The Age of Discovery, launched in 15th-century Lisbon, carried Portuguese sailors to far-flung lands and brought sugarcane, tobacco, cotton, coffee, gold, spices, and chocolate back home. Today, the traditions of the colonies — and a Moorish invasion or two — are integrated into Portugal's cuisine, music, architecture, and the azulejos that tell stories of Portuguese life in colorful ceramic tiles. Portugal has treasures to offer every kind of traveler: the fortified wine of Madeira and the port of the Douro Valley, ancient Roman ruins and crenelated medieval castles, lush hilltop gardens and one-of-a-kind beaches, savory fried snacks and perfectly-sweet pastries — and bookish delights including a baroque library, a literary hotel, and a church-turned-bookshop. In this episode, we hit the high seas with Portuguese explorers, take a virtual visit to the world's oldest operating bookstore, and learn the multifaceted story of the Portuguese poet Pessoa. Then we recommend great books that took us there on the page, including a punch-you-in-the-feelings thriller, a charming history of Lisbon, a different kind of WWII story, a swashbuckling adventure starring a language-loving ape, and a memoir-cookbook hybrid that reads like the best kind of travel guide. Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to the creator of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, David Zucker about how he and his brother went from being class clowns in Milwaukee to launching a hit comedy troupe in a bookstore theater; how his first movie The Kentucky Fried Movie became a huge success that made its money back on opening weekend; the struggle to sell Airplane! and why they insisted on casting serious actors like Robert Stack and Peter Graves; how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar landed his role because he wanted a $30K rug; how directing required precise comedic timing; how veteran actors were skeptical of the film until the end; the real origin of The Naked Gun; why Zucker and his team decided to direct their films, how the failed Police Squad! series evolved into The Naked Gun movie; how he was able to remake serious actor Leslie Nielsen into a perfect comedian; why Ricardo Montalbán forced him to rewrite certain jokes; what it was like to work with O.J. Simpson; the original idea to reboot Naked Gun as a Mission: Impossible spoof featuring Leslie Nielsen's son; how Paramount execs initially loved the script but then gave the project to Seth MacFarlane; why Zucker wouldn't cast Liam Neeson and disagrees with the reboot's tone and CGI; why Hollywood no longer understands comedy; and much more. Burt I. Gordon was a savant when it came to giant animal attack movies, bringing live animals on a massive scale to the screen in ways not seen in Hollywood. In 1957 he directed the GIANT locust movie BEGINNING OF THE END with legendary actor Peter Graves, bringing forth what he could do in this genre. We look back at this now almost 70 year old movie wondering if it still brings the magic, or if its's a forgettable classic, if that makes any sense. “I'll say it: Chris Kattan? Best part of this movie!” - Steve On this week's episode, we're finally chatting about the “bad-ass” horror remake, House on Haunted Hill! Did any of those numerous deleted scenes maybe have more character details by any chance? Why couldn't Jeffrey Combs have played a larger role in this movie? How does Geoffrey Rush look so much like Vincent Price in this and they refused to come out and say it— the guy's named Price to boot, so c'mon! And did anybody else have the Mandela Effect bad memory that Kattan's character got it in the first fifteen minutes? PLUS: Haunted houses need companionship too! House on Haunted Hill stars Geoffrey Rush, Famke Janssen, Taye Diggs, Peter Gallagher, Chris Kattan, Ali Larter, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Max Perlich, Lisa Loeb, James Marsters, Peter Graves, and Jeffrey Combs as Dr. Vannacutt; directed by William Malone. When Jason reached out and asked me, retired and also dead crooner, Dean Martin, to say a few words about Stalag 17, I was confused, as I had nothin' to do with the picture, jack. I wasn't even in the service for very long, myself. Hernia, they told me. It was at that point that he got real hot and some words flew around and we settled things with a bottle of the good stuff. Eventually, I was able to sneak out after agreeing to write this. I'm nothing if not a man of my word. So, buddy-o, lemme set you straight: this is a heck of a picture. What ain't straight was Billy Holden's driving, which we saw to tragic effect. That ain't funny, that's just a fact, jack. So, watch it and listen to this podcast thing about it? I don't care. I did my part. I'm off to the ghost bar, baby. Next week: It's gonna get biblical! Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Dana and Tom with returning guest, Kieran B (Host of the Best Picture Cast), discuss the WW2 prison camp comedy, Stalag 17 (1953): written and directed by Billy Wilder, co-written with Edwin Blum, music by Franz Waxman, starring William Holden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Robert Strauss, and Peter Graves.Plot Summary: "Stalag 17," directed by Billy Wilder, is a gripping and darkly comedic exploration of camaraderie and suspicion within a German prisoner of war camp during World War II. The film follows the lives of American POWs, whose unity is shattered when they suspect a traitor in their midst.Wilder skillfully blends tension and humor, weaving a narrative that keeps the audience guessing until the final reveal. The film's standout performance comes from William Holden as the cynical and resourceful J.J. Sefton, a character who encapsulates the moral ambiguity of survival in the face of adversity. "Stalag 17" is a masterclass in storytelling; balancing suspense, wit, and a poignant exploration of the human condition in the crucible of war.You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/stalag-17-1953-ft-kieran-bFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios
This week in physical media, Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk up a pair of Larry McMurtry tales. Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage are in two of this week's selections and one of them together. Erik gets one of his titles from the Why-Is-This-Not-On-Blu-Ray series and Peter looks back at the time Nicolas Roeg went to Showtime with Mimi Rogers and Bryan Brown. A crowd-pleasing underdog tale gets a director's cut in 4K as does a Billy Wilder film with Peter Graves in prison (not a Turkish one.) On the Saturday October 28, 2023 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the writers and co-directors of Airplane, the the story of a washed-up pilot summoned to greatness on a potentially doomed aircraft. It spoofed the genre of airline disaster movies, made a fortune at the box office in 1980 and inspired a generation or two of filmmakers like Peter Farrelly, one of the filmmakers behind s Dumb and Dumber; There's Something About Mary and the comedy-drama Green Book, who said, “Seeing Airplane for the first time was like going to a great rock concert, like seeing Led Zeppelin or the Talking Heads.” The movie's secret weapon was the casting of serious actors, like Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges and Peter Graves, who played the comedy straight. The result was a great spoof and a comedy unlike anything else. Now you can learn the story behind the making of the film in “Surely You Can't Be Serious: The True Story of Airplane!,” the new book by David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, which is available now wherever you buy fine books. We'll get to know New York City-based stand-up comedian Tina Friml. She has performed at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, is a regular at the Comedy Cellar in New York City and has a large following on line for her unique take on her own physical disability, and fearless honesty about the social assumptions that come with living with cerebral palsy. Finally, author Ainslie Hogarth stops by. She is the author of four novels, including “Motherthing,” a darkly comedic novel about a woman who must take drastic measures to save her husband and herself from the vengeful ghost of her mother-in-law that was chosen as one of New York Times picks for best book of the year in 2022. Today we're here to talk about her new novel, “Normal Women,” a darkly comic story about how we value female labor—and how we don't. In the story a new mother becomes embroiled in a dangerous mystery when her friend, a controversial entrepreneur, goes missing.

In the 1000th edition of In Our Time, Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss arguably the most celebrated film of the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007). It begins with an image that, once seen, stays with you for the rest of your life: the figure of Death playing chess with a Crusader on the rocky Swedish shore. The release of this film in 1957 brought Bergman fame around the world. We see Antonius Block, the Crusader, realising he can't beat Death but wanting to prolong this final game for one last act, without yet knowing what that act might be. As he goes on a journey through a plague ridden world, his meeting with a family of jesters and their baby offers him some kind of epiphany. The mission is totally impossible, right? Maybe? It seemed pretty doable to me. You get a face making machine and you can fight communism like all damn day. "Airplane!" ranks sixth on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies and has more laughs per minute than any other film, but none of that matters. The real question is: Did Gene Lyons like it? In this episode commissioned by listener Kiki, the Shat Crew covers a long-overdue '80s comedy classic that mixes heavy parody, genius non-verbal jokes and delightfully offensive material. Dick Ebert explains that every time he watches "Airplane!" he discovers a new punchline. And Gene applauds performances from Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Julie Hagerty. The guys also cover the infamous Otto scene, the line that keeps giving and whether Johnny was gay. If you enjoy episodes where Big D and Gene disagree, give this one a listen. Holy moley, we've made it to 50 episodes! This time around we're checking out a pair of films that were likely the basis of television shows, even though the official story is that there's no connection. We start off with Stalag 17, directed and co-written by Billy Wilder. This 1953 film stars William Holden in an Oscar-winning performance, along with Don Taylor, Robert Strauss, Harvey Lembeck, Peter Graves, Neville Brand, Richard Erdman, Michael Moore, Sig Ruman, and Otto Preminger. Its worth noting that Strauss and Lembeck also appeared in the original Broadway production. There are numerous elements of this film which turned up in the subsequent television show, Hogan's Heroes, which ran on CBS from 1965-1971. Those would include the fact that both productions are set in a World War Two German POW camp, both have a Sergeant Schulz, and both have a stove camouflaging an escape tunnel. (Claude noted that Hogan's Heroes is also in Stalag 17 but his memory is faulty here; Hogan and Co. were being held in Stalag 13.) In Part Two, we take a look at another film that--on paper--has no connection to a TV series. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support
Regarded as one of the funniest comedy movies of all time, it's the kind of movie not made any more. Comedy from shot to shot, scene to scene. Flying High - known as Airplane around the world, stars Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Liam Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves and even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Like a sketch show with a plot this movie is a parody of another presumably serious movie but done with the intent to make you laugh, and laugh you will. Stephen knows it back to front, Trev's seen plenty of clips. So Fire up the Fetch and sit back watch it on your Hisense TV again.

One World in a New World with Victor Vorski - Imagineer, Regenerative Real Estate Producer As a preface to our in-depth conversation we clarify what 'regenerative' means in the efforts of people desiring to co-create community around the concept. He quotes Jenny Anderson, "Regeneration is about healing the story of separation between men and nature and men and men." Are we really separate? What evidence might you cite? Victor talks about being passionate about questions; exploring them allowing divergent perspectives in conversation regarding the question. Curiosity opens participants to creativity and exploration in more psychologically safe and intellectually humble environments as a result. His perspective on questions is quite valuable. Reflecting his youth, he shares he didn't quite have as dramatic an awakening as Zen. His was a bit slower, spending time in nature with his grandmother talking walks in the forest. It developed his appreciating and early fascination with nature and a sense of deeper connection with life. His reflection on living in Poland as a boy, and a realization he had, speaks to early self-awareness. Further in the conversation, and in sharp contrast, he asserts that things are possibly much different than some great cabal reaping rewards while others are miserable. His perspective is eye-opening. How do we develop good or better questions? What are the problems we are trying to solve? How do we have integrative conversations across differences? Victor speaks about the development of villages, which is his passion, and the research that lead him to studying education. Peter Graves caught his attention regarding his findings on 'free play' with children. What he shares speaks to the nature of anarchy, self-rule, and that it leads to more natural order of agreement on the rules of their engagement. Speaking to the expansion of opportunity within the 'global village' Victor shares that Live and Let Live Foundation is an example of a small organization being global through the access and availability of the Internet. It's organic growth is magnified by accessibility. He shares the Internet is becoming the neural network of the global brain. In closing, he shares a profound piece of advice for living today. He nearly died twice, once from a bleeding ulcer and once from a stroke. His advice is priceless and timely for today. “BIKE SHORTS” PILOT EPISODE - NEMBAFEST 2022 I often chat with fellow cyclists that say they don't have enough bike-related stories to fill a full episode, so the idea of BIKE SHORTS was born! This pilot episode was recorded as a test at NEMBAfest 2022, and overall, I'm happy with the direction! Initially I was going to release each interview as a single episode, but decided for this first one, I'd just drop them into one chronological mashup as it happened on August 6, 2022. I hope you find it interesting and follow along as I work through the process. During one of the hottest days of the summer, I was able to grab 7 different people — each with their own background, voice and take on what it is to ride a bike. Listen in as I chat with John Aldrich who shares a story about the 6th time he was hit by a car, Melinda Martens talks about getting the biking bug after trying her brothers BMX when she was 7, and Lindsay Currier shares her full-circle story about starting mountain biking in Maine, her path to riding out west and how 20 years later she's stoked to call Maine her home again. I then sat with Emily Elswick who at 28yrs old learned to ride a bike for the first time and now can't imagine a life without riding, Peter Graves who's known throughout the cycling world for his work as an announcer at 13 Olympic Games, Justin Nardella reminisces about getting into riding mountain bikes as a kid on a golf course, and finally Josh Brown shares some stoke on coming to Maine for the first time and how lucky he feels to be working with Transition. -- Included in the "Best 40 Cycling Podcasts" on Feedspot: https://blog.feedspot.com/cycling_podcasts/ Follow on INSTAGRAM Follow on FACEBOOK Visit iRIDEaBIKE.com -- A Production of I RIDE, LLC Theme Song by Spencer Albee. In today's conversation, we catch up with Women's Rowing Head Coach Peter Graves. Peter shares his own family history with Trinity Rowing, his decision to chase the Olympic dream after college, and his goals for the women's rowing team under his tenure.

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Julie Nimoy and husband David Knight about Julie's dad, actor and raconteur Leonard Nimoy. It was great to connect with Julie about her father and what it was like being the daughter of a pop culture icon. The thing is, Leonard Nimoy was so much more than just Mr. Spock. He was a photographer, a poet, a singer, a director, a voice over artist, a pitchman and more. Did you know he directed the top grossing movie of 1987 which was NOT a Star Trek film? Did you know he was such a fan of Vincent Van Gogh that he wrote a one man show, starred in it and had it taped for PBS? Nimoy was also the host of In Search of….where he showed off his amazing collection of houndstooth jackets and turtleneck shirts. He replaced Peter Graves in Mission Impossible. He stared inNight Gallery, Deathwatch, an independent film directed by pal Vic Morrow, a TV movie A Woman Called Golda which got him an Emmy nomination, The Outer Limits and much more. Nimoy was also interested in the paranormal, science (and cars) which led him to Baffled!which is synonymous for our host Josh Mills with Afrin and fever dreams, he recorded albums for Dot Records such as The Touch of Leonard Nimoy, did summer stock, owned a single engine plane he flew, a boat at Lake Mead…it's like they based the film The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across The 8th Dimension on Leonard Nimoy the man. So it was great talk to Julie and David about their PBS documentary Remembering LeonardNimoy about his battle with COPD as well as their upcoming documentary Wilder! on comedian Gene Wilder & his battle with Alzheimer's. Did you know who directed Wilder in the film Funny About Love? You guessed it. And yes, we talk more about University High School, LA restaurants, the Century City Mall and much more on the next episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Take a Listen.
We're happy to debut a new podcast series in conjuction with the When It Was Cool network with the first episode of The Plot. What's that, you ask? It's going to be an examination of the spy/heist genre. It will look at film, television, comics, cartoons and whatever else that can fall under that umbrella. First up, we go to the very top of the genre for me, the original Mission Impossible TV show, which ran on CBS from 1966 to 1975. Naturally, we start with the Pilot, which starred Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, the team leader, along with regulars Barbara Bain, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, Martin Landau and guest star Wally Cox. We look at the background on the show and then some brief chat about the episode itself, where the team goes to a Caribbean country to stop a dictator from using newly-acquired nuclear warheads against the United States. We also look at arguably the most-remembered episode of the show, Season 3's The Execution. We have Peter Graves in his second year as Jim Phelps, the regular team and guest villains Vincent Gardenia, Val Avery and Lew Askew. The team needs to get the goods on a mobster trying to control food prices and must get a hitman to rat out his boss by making him believe he is days away from being killed in the gas chamber. This episode was a little shorter than we planned, but didnt want to just add filler. It was the demo episode, so please forgive any hiccups or glitches. We'll be back soon with another episode. Thanks to Karl for the invitation. Make sure you sample the other shows on the When It Was Cool Network.
After an unplanned hiatus, we're back with more Shaw Brothers and Spaghetti Western goodness!!! On this episode, Patsy the Angry Nerd and I discuss the films 10 Tigers of Kwangtung from 1980, and The 5-Man Army from 1969. In 10 Tigers, the Venoms are back in a complicated story that moves between past and present and details the origins of the Chinese legend of the 10 Tigers from Kwangtung! Great cinematography and fighting as always, and we had a hilarious time dissecting this film! In the 5-Man Army, Peter Graves stars as a man who puts a team together for an almost impossible mission of robbing gold from a heavily guarded train. Bud Spencer co-stars and it's great seeing these guys team up!! So check out these great films and come back for our discussion! The 1950's were a very black and white time, both literally and figuratively. Everything was black and white - our films, our TV shows, our newspapers, our restrooms and lunch counters, heck even our world view was black and white. It was a simpler time, well, until we decided that we would try to use our new fangled technology to try and communicate with the good people of Mars. In this month's movie, Peter Graves, aka Mister Phelps from Mission Impossible, is our Martian correspondent, and let's just say that maybe talking to Mars was NOT a good idea. At all. After last week's disturbing pick, The Vanishing, John has decided to go in a completely different direction with this week's choice. He has chosen the comedy classic, Airplane! Released in 1980 and written & directed by ZAZ (Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker). It's the joke a minute movie that took spoofs (Like Mel Brooks) and brought them to another level. Don't blink or you may miss a joke. It starred actors like Leslie Neilsen, Peter Graves. Lloyd Bridges and Robert Stack who were known for serious roles. Their deadpan delivery is what makes it so funny. All the iconic lines are there: "Don't call me Shirley", "Looks like I picked a bad week to stop...", Excuse me stewardess, I speak Jive". Still holds up and we had fun talking about it.
The American Birkebeiner is so much more than a ski race—it provides an opportunity for Nordic skiers of all ages and abilities to unite as a community and celebrate our sport. Cross Country Skier podcast host Peter Graves talks with Birkie Executive Director Ben Popp about what it takes to put on the most iconic cross country ski race in the U.S. They also discuss race founder Tony Wise's legacy, which included building and operating the Telemark Lodge and its associated alpine and Nordic ski trails. Following the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation's purchase of the historic property last year, Popp fills us in about the exciting plans for its revival, including the possibility of a World Cup race in 2024. Veteran sportscaster Peter Graves has been the host of the Cross Country Skier Podcast, but this time we turn the tables on him for a behind-the-scenes look at what's it like to communicate the action at some of sporting's biggest events to a worldwide audience. New editor-in-chief Cindy Hirschfeld interviews Graves about his Olympic memories—he's worked at 13 Winter and Summer Games in both the broadcast booth and in the stadium—plus what attending an Olympics during the pandemic entails and whom we should keep an eye on at the upcoming Beijing Games. We also hear about Graves's longtime experience announcing another signature event, the American Birkebeiner, and his recent election to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. Will Rogers is known for saying, “It isn't what we don't know that gives us trouble, it's what we know that ain't so!” This quote is one of Bill Esteb's favorites. The special guest on this episode of The Mile High Podcast is the founder of Patient Media and Perfect Patients. He's created some of the Chiropractic profession's legendary media material, approaching patient education with a beginner's mind, to grow better long-term practice members. Bill enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up in Olympia, Washington. A college communication class landed him an internship at a local radio station, and he found a mentor in the station newsman, who taught him about how to ask questions, conduct interviews with newsmakers, and how to write for clarity. Because of him, Bill found radio so stimulating he dropped out of college to work full time at the station. Later, he worked at advertising jobs at two Colorado agencies and then in film production. Soon after, he was introduced to chiropractic. As part of his job duties, he flew to Spokane, Washington for a three-day chiropractic seminar co-taught by two incredible speakers and chiropractic visionaries. What he heard "connected the dots" and he fell in love with the principles of chiropractic. He began his own chiropractic care about a month later, mostly as a research project. Non-symptomatic, he could tell after a month or two that his health had improved. He went on to write the Peter Graves, Russell Erhardt and Jayne Kennedy Chiropractic videos for Renaissance In 1987 he met Dr. Michael Parrish, a Colorado Springs chiropractor who owned seven, associate-run chiropractic practices. Soon after, he and Dr. Parrish joined with another chiropractor and launched Back Talk Systems. That's when the Report of Findings Magazette was invented. One of the highlights of his career was addressing the February 1995 centennial graduating class at Palmer College. In April 1999 he sold his half of the old company and started Patient Media. Most recently he's become interested in how to best use the Internet to spread the Chiropractic message. That has resulted in a collaboration with his Perfect Patients digital marketing business partner, Steve Anson, in Perth, Australia. He's written 12 Chiropractic books, documenting the many facets of the doctor/patient relationship. He writes Chiropractic practice blog posts and each week he sends Monday Moring Motivation messages. On this podcast you'll discover: How Bill found his way into the world of chiropractic The keys to your digital and offline marketing strategy The difference between having a web site and having a digital marketing strategy How to communicate from the patient's point of view And so much more. Time spent with Bill Esteb discussing chiropractic is time well spent, and listening to this podcast will be time well spent as well. Enjoy. Welcome back! It's the third match of season three! We've got Eric, Guy, and Joel to face some games that deal with extra letters and alternate perspectives! Round one asks how movies would change if you added a letter to the front of one of the words, and things get a little kooky. Then, round two keeps those titles the same but asks our players to name the movie based on a plot summary from the point of view of a supporting character. Still, our players parse it all out and soldier on to the lightning round. Support Us On Patreon
