Plus, we really value the support!Don't forget you can also watch us on YouTube!Show notesIn this Spotlight, our news roundup begins with a look ahead to the Tokyo World Championships, via a rewind to the Diamond League finals in Zurich. Has Zurich shown the way forward for field events? We unpack whether this model can help the field events and thus sport grow, celebrate new stars and seasoned champions. We discuss how moving the World Championships to the season's end poses unique challenges for athletes, and stretches the physiological peak many can sustain. We look ahead to epic clashes, where new favourites have emerged and old stars have shown form at just the right time. From track to turf, we turn to rugby and the doping case of Asenathi Ntlabakanye. The South African prop has been provisionally suspended after a positive test for a substance SA Rugby has said was not performance-enhancing and was medically prescribed. Ross and Gareth explore what this may mean, and the broader grey areas that challenge athlete rights and fairness in sport. Then in Center Stage (53:34), the Women's Rugby World Cup takes the spotlight. The tournament is off to a fantastic start, breaking records and continuing its growth. But Ross explains why wide performance gaps between rugby's juggernauts and minnows could threaten the game's continued long-term prospects, and how targeted investment will be key to keeping the sport competitive and fair.In Ross Replies (1:09:42), Stu asks whether women experience head injuries differently from men? Ross explains that the answer is "it depends", a variation of yes and what this means for preventing head injury in women. And Finally (1:18:39), Mike asked for insight on whether children should be taught to tackle when learning rugby, and we discuss why the answer is a cautious, and qualified "yes", with some evidence and a cautionary tale about how the speed with which we introduce risk is the key.LinksStory on Ntlabakanye's doping positive and SARU's statementThe NCAA team that lost a title because of caffeineAs discussed re the NCAA, the London Marathon death attributed to a stimulant in a weight loss supplementStu's question and discussion about head injury mechanisms in women's rugby: Discourse members onlyRoss' paper describing head injury mechanisms in elite womenThe paper that documents head accelerations in players aged 13 to adult Hosted on Acast. This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we welcome Emma Wilkinson—a freelance health journalist, ultra runner, mother of three, and co-author of the empowering book Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport. Emma's journey into ultra running didn't begin until her 40s, but once she discovered the joy of going long and slow, there was no turning back. In this honest and motivating conversation, Emma shares how she went from half marathons and road running to self-created 100K adventures in the mountains of Snowdonia. Alongside fellow runner and friend Lily Canter, she set out to research and write Ultra Women, a book that celebrates female endurance athletes and dives into the science, stories, and social constructs around women in ultra sport. Emma talks openly about what inspired the book, how she balanced full-time work, parenting, and running while writing it, and what she learned about the unique strengths women bring to endurance challenges—especially around fatigue resistance, pain management, and mental toughness. If you've ever doubted your capabilities, struggled with self-identifying as a “runner,” or wondered if your body was made for ultras—this episode is for you. Emma's message is simple and powerful: don't put limits on yourself—just give it a go. New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Kia ora e te whānau. This week, Ali Pottinger and Matt Rayment speak to Sean Conway, the Zimbabwe-born, UK-based endurance adventurer whose life has been one long refusal to do things by halves. Sean's palmarès reads like a dare whispered at closing time: cycling around the world, swimming the length of Great Britain, running across it, and then becoming the first person to complete a length-of-Britain triathlon. He's broken the world record for the most Ironman triathlons completed on consecutive days, and carved out a niche as one of the great eccentrics of adventure sport— with his signature beard and being, as he puts it, part-terrier part-monkey. Whether he's towing logs up mountains, riding Penny Farthings for charity, running the London Marathon dressed as Big Ben or pushing the boundaries of human endurance, Sean's mission has always been the same: inspire others to dream bigger, be braver, and live a little wilderDirt Church Radio – Best Enjoyed Running.--- --- ---Episode LinksSean Conway HomeSean Conway Instagram Sign up for the DCR AidStation newsletterThe Squadrun 4-Week Training Trial for DCR Listeners!Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on FacebookFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake

He opens up about his late wife Ruth, their shared love of running, and how he honoured her memory at this year's London Marathon while raising vital funds for pancreatic cancer research. From the camaraderie of running clubs to the quiet strength found on Peak District trails, Tony reflects on resilience, ageing, injury, and the simple magic of putting one foot in front of the other.Whether you're chasing PBs, starting Couch to 5K, or just need a reminder of the joy running can bring, this is an uplifting conversation about community, perseverance, and the miles that shape us.

Anna Troup is a powerhouse in British ultrarunning, and her story is nothing short of epic. After dominating the Montane Summer Spine Race in 2021 and 2022, she suffered a serious foot injury that kept her sidelined for nearly three years. But in June 2025, at age 55, she made a jaw-dropping comeback: winning the 268-mile race outright in 84 hours, 56 minutes, and 37 seconds, finishing more than six hours ahead of the next competitor.XMILES UK - Listeners now receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link below.https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRRunderwear - Use code TEATRAILS15 for 15% off your orderhttps://runderwear.avln.me/c/GPVNMgMfYfLPSHOKZ - Use code TEA102025 to receive £10 off.https://uk.shokz.com?sca_ref=7394994.MfsDQZBAeLQihiPrecision Fuel & Hydration https://visit.pfandh.com/3GKxHjUPrecision Fuel & Hydration Planner https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zHarrier - Use code TEA10 for 10% off. https://harrierrunfree.co.uk/Fenixlight Limited - Use code T&T5 for 5% off your order.https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/Protein Rebel - Use code Tea15 for 15% off your first order. https://proteinrebel.com/Centurion Running - Use code TEAANDTRAILS10 to receive 10% off *Excluding Sale Items.https://centurionrunning.com/GOODR - Use code GOTEAANDTRAILS to reveive 10% off your order.https://goodr.avln.me/c/VLEmsAIZCDtmLIFE JACKET SKIN PROTECTION - Use code GOTYOURBACK for 10% off your first order.https://lifejacketskin.com/PRIMUS UK - Use code TT-PRIMUS-20 for 20& off.https://primusuk.avln.me/c/kBWmOJaEiByDContent may contain affiliate links which can help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you. After graduating from the University of Tulsa, Ben Preisner took his years of track and cross-country training and started testing them out on the roads. Following a couple of progressively faster half marathons, he set his sights on the full. When COVID derailed his original plan to debut at the London Marathon, Ben applied for and ran The Marathon Project in 2020, where he ran a remarkable 2:10:17. In this episode, we discuss qualifying for and racing at the Tokyo Olympics, his rise from being the fifth fastest Canadian marathoner to now being the second fastest, and his gutsy run at scoring a spot on the Paris Olympic team. Ben is ridiculously smart and I think you will really enjoy hearing how his logical mindset and calm, steady approach to life shows up in both his training and racing. Racing IQWe all know training matters—but what separates good races from great ones? It's how you respond when you had to face the harsh realities of race. Think Sifan Hasan's London Marathon debut: hamstring issues mid-race, but still a win. That's Racing IQ.In this episode, we unpack the art of staying calm and smart when race-day chaos strikes. Because on race day, it's not just about the body, your brain better show up too.Pacing IQ: The mind game of knowing when to hold pace or chase.Race-day decisions: How to adapt in real-time such as dropped gels, hydration mishaps, and the mental reset process. The metrics that matter: What data to track (and what to ignore) when racing.Training RacingIQ: Workouts, simulations, and post-race audits to build smarter instincts.Expect the unexpected—and have a plan for your plan falling apart. What could be a decision tree to manage mid-race pacing.Conditions (heat, hills, headwind) demand adaptation—not stubbornness.RacingIQ can be trained like any other skill.Host: Aditi PandyaAditi is a seasoned endurance runner and the host of The World of Running podcast. In this special Bonus Interview, Zacca sits down with Run2PB Coach Andy Buchanan to break down his big weekend where . celebrated back-to-back Gold Coast Half Marathon titles, and now holds the record for the fastest half marathon on Australian soil (1:01:08)(0:00 - 3:10) Introduction Andy candidly reflects on a challenging period post-London Marathon and a disappointing 8th-place finish at Launceston, admitting a loss of confidence. His coach, Scotty Westcott, provided crucial perspective, reminding Andy of his recent marathon volume (4 marathons in 12 months) and confirming that the dip in form was explainable, not a fundamental decline. This period served as motivation, with Andy trusting the process and his coach to rebuild. He even used a strong K. rep session posted on Strava as a "flex" to remind competitors he was "still here" after Launceston.(3:11 - 11:59) Reflecting on Recent Form & MotivationRace morning at Gold Coast saw nerves, "definitely more than the year before", but also unique dynamics. Andy arrived early at 4:45 AM, experiencing minimal banter among the elite field. He describes Brett Robinson's aggressive early lead as a "big move," which he strategically chose not to cover immediately, saving energy. During the middle section, self-doubt crept in, with thoughts of "maybe today isn't my day" flashing back to Launceston. He combated this by distracting himself with crowd support, which was "unbelievable" this year, and focusing on other runners coming the opposite way.(12:00 - 32:50) How the race unfoldedAndy's decisive move came around 19.5K, catching the leaders and using smart course navigation. He exploited a "laughable" strategic advantage on a sharp left-hand bend by taking the inside line while his competitors ran wider, putting him suddenly in the lead. This "second chance" mindset, knowing he'd nearly lost the race earlier, fueled his final surge. He attempted a big push around 500m to go, which left him "so cooked" , but then employed a "bluff" to secure the win, subtly pushing to make others consolidate their positions.(32:51 - 42:01) The Decisive Move & The FinishCrossing the line, Andy didn't immediately know his record-breaking time or that he had won. The moments directly after finishing were among the "best I've felt in the finish line" and "proudest I've been of myself" recently. He greatly appreciated Pat Carroll's personal congratulations on breaking his 33-year-old record, making the morning even more special. Looking ahead, Andy is embarking on heat training in Cairns as part of his preparation for World Champs in Japan, planning his travel and training blocks with Athletics Australia's support. He continues to benefit from the supportive "group chat" among Australian marathoners for advice.(42:02 - End) Post-Race Emotions & Future Plans
Luke Grenfell-Shaw is a remarkable endurance athlete, and cancer advocate whose story reads like a masterclass in resilience. Diagnosed with stage 4 sarcoma at just 24, he refused to let the label “incurable” define him. Instead, he coined the term “CanLiver”.He's cycled 30,000 km from Bristol to Beijing on a tandem bike, inviting hundreds of others, including fellow CanLivers, to join him along the way. He's since become a professional trail runner for Brooks, and he casually ran an 80-minute half marathon during chemotherapy.https://www.alifeintandemfilm.com/https://www.instagram.com/lukegshaw/ XMILES UK - Listeners now receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link below.https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRRunderwear - Use code TEATRAILS15 for 15% off your orderhttps://runderwear.avln.me/c/GPVNMgMfYfLPSHOKZ - Use code TEA102025 to receive £10 off.https://uk.shokz.com?sca_ref=7394994.MfsDQZBAeLQihiPrecision Fuel & Hydration https://visit.pfandh.com/3GKxHjUPrecision Fuel & Hydration Planner https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zHarrier - Use code TEA10 for 10% off. https://harrierrunfree.co.uk/Fenixlight Limited - Use code T&T5 for 5% off your order.https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/Protein Rebel - Use code Tea15 for 15% off your first order. https://proteinrebel.com/Centurion Running - Use code TEAANDTRAILS10 to receive 10% off *Excluding Sale Items.https://centurionrunning.com/GOODR - Use code GOTEAANDTRAILS to reveive 10% off your order.https://goodr.avln.me/c/VLEmsAIZCDtmLIFE JACKET SKIN PROTECTION - Use code GOTYOURBACK for 10% off your first order.https://lifejacketskin.com/PRIMUS UK - Use code TT-PRIMUS-20 for 20& off.https://primusuk.avln.me/c/kBWmOJaEiByDContent may contain affiliate links which can help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you. When life doesn't unfold the way we hoped, it can be tempting to see that as failure. But what if it was those moments that actually shape us the most? This week, I'm delighted to welcome Eliud Kipchoge back to the show for a second incredible conversation - recorded just days after he completed the 2025 London Marathon. Eliud is a Kenyan athlete who is widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time. He has won two successive Olympic marathons and 10 major titles. And of course, he's the only athlete to have ever run a marathon in under two hours, which he did back in 2019 in Vienna as part of the 1:59 challenge. But as you'll hear in this conversation, his wisdom goes far beyond running as Eliud shares the life lessons that have shaped his journey - not just as an athlete, but as a human being. You'll also hear: Why Eliud believes discipline is what creates freedom - and how keeping promises to yourself builds the self-trust needed to face life's hardest moments Why failure is not the opposite of success, but, instead, the soil where wisdom grows How running has become a metaphor for life - with its highs, lows, unexpected challenges and the need to keep moving forward How Eliud not being able to finish his last Olympic marathon taught him more than any victory ever could The true power of community, humility, and purpose - and why Eliud still cleans toilets at his training camp despite being a global icon How planning, consistency and positive thinking guide his life - and why he believes ego is something we must all learn to let go of Throughout our conversation, Eliud speaks with warmth, humility and compassion. He challenges the idea that goals alone define success - reminding us that it's the process, the discipline and the way we show up every day that truly counts. Whether you're a runner or not, this episode is an invitation to reflect on your own mindset, your values, and your relationship with setbacks. Eliud shows us that progress isn't always linear - and that real growth often happens in the moments we never planned for. I hope you enjoy listening. Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Lowri Morgan is a remarkable Welsh television presenter, adventurer, and runner. She's one of the very few people to have completed both the grueling 350 mile 6633 Ultra in the Arctic and the Amazon Jungle Ultra Marathon.Beyond her athletic feats, she's a BAFTA winning broadcaster who's presented shows like Scrum V on the BBC and Uned 5 on S4C. She's also dived to the wreck of the Titanic and produced award-winning documentaries about her adventures. What's even more inspiring is that she overcame serious injuries, only to go on and conquer some of the world's toughest races.XMILES UK - Listeners now receive 10% of their order value back as store credit via the link below.https://xmiles.avln.me/c/RiwxnARvfHeRRunderwear - Use code TEATRAILS15 for 15% off your orderhttps://runderwear.avln.me/c/GPVNMgMfYfLPSHOKZ - Use code TEA102025 to receive £10 off.https://uk.shokz.com?sca_ref=7394994.MfsDQZBAeLQihiPrecision Fuel & Hydration https://visit.pfandh.com/3GKxHjUPrecision Fuel & Hydration Planner https://visit.pfandh.com/3RuP25zHarrier - Use code TEA10 for 10% off. https://harrierrunfree.co.uk/Fenixlight Limited - Use code T&T5 for 5% off your order.https://www.fenixlight.co.uk/Protein Rebel - Use code Tea15 for 15% off your first order. https://proteinrebel.com/Centurion Running - Use code TEAANDTRAILS10 to receive 10% off *Excluding Sale Items.https://centurionrunning.com/GOODR - Use code GOTEAANDTRAILS to reveive 10% off your order.https://goodr.avln.me/c/VLEmsAIZCDtmLIFE JACKET SKIN PROTECTION - Use code GOTYOURBACK for 10% off your first order.https://lifejacketskin.com/PRIMUS UK - Use code TT-PRIMUS-20 for 20& off.https://primusuk.avln.me/c/kBWmOJaEiByDContent may contain affiliate links which can help support and grow this channel at no extra cost to you. This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races. Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. "It's just this phase of life I'm in right now where I just can't get enough of going out and having fun. Within reason. In sweatpants." I had the absolute privilege of getting to attend the London Marathon with New Balance (a sponsor of the race). I attended a New Balance Women's Summit, hosted a panel the night before the race, and spent a ton of time exploring as much of London as I could. On race day, I was at the finish line cheering for the runners as they made their way from Buckingham Palace down the chute. (Congratulations, runners! Not an easy day out there!) The entire experience was incredible. I loved the city of London, the people, the architecture, the pub scene (!!!). I already can't wait to go back.
