From growing up without access to fitness, navigating cultural expectations, and recovering from a traumatic head injury, to unintentionally becoming a source of inspiration for others, Aaliyah speaks openly about the challenges that shaped her.She reflects on hiding her early gym sessions from family, dealing with community stigma, facing online criticism, and the moment she nearly walked away from content entirely. Aaliyah also talks about influencing major brands, the growth of representation in the fitness world, and what running the London Marathon taught her about resilience and identity. This conversation is honest, grounding and full of moments that anyone on a personal journey will connect with. We've heard about the placebo effect, when belief in a treatment makes us feel better, but what do you know about the nocebo effect? It's when our negative expectations of a treatment, medicine or procedure - or even mistrust of our health care services - can actually make us feel worse. And it's a growing area of scientific research.A landmark change to the Family Courts has been announced today - the court will no longer work on the presumption that having contact with both parents is in the best interest of the child. Domestic abuse campaigners have said the move will save children's lives. Claire Throssel MBE is one of the campaigners who has driven this change. In October 2014 her two sons, Jack, who was 12 and Paul, who was nine, were deliberately killed by their father. He had been awarded five hours weekly access to the boys despite Claire's warnings that he was a danger to them. Earlier this month, for the first time, every match across England's top two tiers of women's football was photographed exclusively by female photographers. So how important is it that breakthrough moments in women's sport are captured and told through the eyes of women? Eileen Langsley is a pioneering sports photographer who has captured moments from some of the world's biggest sporting events over the last five decades, and Morgan Harlow was part of the all-female photography team for the Women's Super League.Long queues for the toilets are something women are very used to, whilst often watching the men dash in and out quickly. Amber Probyn and Hazel McShane are two women who are trying to resolve this issue, having invented flat packed ‘female urinals,' which have already been deployed at Glastonbury and the London Marathon. They've just secured almost £1m investment, enabling them to take their invention around the world.

We conclude our latest follow-up episodes on Axel Rudakubana and his darkest of deeds on a summer's day in Southport last July. In this part Antony looks at apparent ‘events' involving Rudakubana - and the media coverage of them in a world awash with rumours and agendas - since his sentencing hearing in January and the award of a 52-year minimum term life sentence.   Parallel to this is the extraordinary suffering and bravery of the victims' families and a remarkably poignant day at the London Marathon in April.  From there we move on to the ongoing government-commissioned Southport Inquiry, which seeks to clarify the precise events of July 29th and to try to shed light on how an apparently normal if withdrawn 12-year-old child could have been led to his monstrous actions   There will be at least one further update episode as the inquiry continues   We hope you enjoy the show! Plus, we really value the support!Don't forget you can also watch us on YouTube!Show notesIn this Spotlight, our news roundup begins with a look ahead to the Tokyo World Championships, via a rewind to the Diamond League finals in Zurich. Has Zurich shown the way forward for field events? We unpack whether this model can help the field events and thus sport grow, celebrate new stars and seasoned champions. We discuss how moving the World Championships to the season's end poses unique challenges for athletes, and stretches the physiological peak many can sustain. We look ahead to epic clashes, where new favourites have emerged and old stars have shown form at just the right time. From track to turf, we turn to rugby and the doping case of Asenathi Ntlabakanye. The South African prop has been provisionally suspended after a positive test for a substance SA Rugby has said was not performance-enhancing and was medically prescribed. Ross and Gareth explore what this may mean, and the broader grey areas that challenge athlete rights and fairness in sport. Then in Center Stage (53:34), the Women's Rugby World Cup takes the spotlight. The tournament is off to a fantastic start, breaking records and continuing its growth. But Ross explains why wide performance gaps between rugby's juggernauts and minnows could threaten the game's continued long-term prospects, and how targeted investment will be key to keeping the sport competitive and fair.In Ross Replies (1:09:42), Stu asks whether women experience head injuries differently from men? Ross explains that the answer is "it depends", a variation of yes and what this means for preventing head injury in women. And Finally (1:18:39), Mike asked for insight on whether children should be taught to tackle when learning rugby, and we discuss why the answer is a cautious, and qualified "yes", with some evidence and a cautionary tale about how the speed with which we introduce risk is the key.LinksStory on Ntlabakanye's doping positive and SARU's statementThe NCAA team that lost a title because of caffeineAs discussed re the NCAA, the London Marathon death attributed to a stimulant in a weight loss supplementStu's question and discussion about head injury mechanisms in women's rugby: Discourse members onlyRoss' paper describing head injury mechanisms in elite womenThe paper that documents head accelerations in players aged 13 to adult Hosted on Acast. This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we welcome Emma Wilkinson—a freelance health journalist, ultra runner, mother of three, and co-author of the empowering book Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport.  Emma's journey into ultra running didn't begin until her 40s, but once she discovered the joy of going long and slow, there was no turning back. In this honest and motivating conversation, Emma shares how she went from half marathons and road running to self-created 100K adventures in the mountains of Snowdonia. Alongside fellow runner and friend Lily Canter, she set out to research and write Ultra Women, a book that celebrates female endurance athletes and dives into the science, stories, and social constructs around women in ultra sport. Emma talks openly about what inspired the book, how she balanced full-time work, parenting, and running while writing it, and what she learned about the unique strengths women bring to endurance challenges—especially around fatigue resistance, pain management, and mental toughness. If you've ever doubted your capabilities, struggled with self-identifying as a “runner,” or wondered if your body was made for ultras—this episode is for you. Emma's message is simple and powerful: don't put limits on yourself—just give it a go.  New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries.  Do you want to support the Tough Girl Mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media in the world of adventure and physical challenges? Support via Patreon!
