Four weeks on from the London Marathon, and at least two more injuries down. I have finally asked for help and received it. The source of all my pain is NOT what I expected, which is a good reminder as to why we must all seek professional help when we need it, rather than crying into our cornflakes or seeking out the help of Dr Google, who is – let's face it – a bit shit.PB timeHolly's update is cause for celebration; she's got herself a whacking great PB without even really trying, and we are both thrilled for her. Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2025 63:56

Steven is joined by former Premier League footballer Steve Sidwell, who shares his journey from the pitch to the podcast studio, reflecting on his career and the transition to life after football. He discusses the challenges of retirement, the void left by the game, and his current training for the London Marathon, motivated by personal connections to health issues. The conversation delves into the art world, the culture of football dressing rooms, and the evolution of player dynamics in the modern game, highlighting the balance between natural talent and hard work Key Takeaways Reflecting on a career as a premiership footballer, there is a deep sense of nostalgia for the experiences of playing, training, and the camaraderie within the team. The emotional connection to the sport and the memories of specific moments, such as victories and the atmosphere of match days, are profoundly cherished. The transition from professional football to training for events like the London Marathon illustrates the importance of routine, commitment, and sacrifice. The discipline required in both football and marathon training highlights the parallels between athletic dedication and personal goals. Effective leadership within a team is crucial, with examples of strong leaders like John Terry and Didier Drogba demonstrating how their presence and work ethic inspired their teammates. The shift towards a more diverse and sensitive environment in dressing rooms reflects broader societal changes, with a noted difference in how criticism and accountability are handled compared to previous generations. BEST MOMENTS "I miss it badly. I'm talking everything, not just playing... the smell of cut grass, all the silly things like that that you just can't replicate." "When you get back into training, the commitment, the dedication... you've got to sacrifice stuff." "I knew my role, I knew what I had to do and I worked it... I had to give 100% and really, really work all the time." "There's no loyalty in football. You think you're going to be loyal to this football club and that football club will do the dirty on you just as quick as you would if you wanted to leave." VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14/?hl=en ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should have multiple focuses to be a well-rounded individual. Success shouldn’t be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships. As a person who has made successes in life, and also made huge cock-ups, I feel I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful, or at least start your pursuit. My ‘Study’ has taken resources from reading and education plus being around, my perception of, successful people - and I know a lot of successful people from all walks of life. My ‘Study’ coming from my experiences in business, investing, sales (my core background), training, boxing and education has enabled me to become well-rounded and successful and I will help you in these key areas too. ‘I wouldn't change a thing. I'd go through all that suffering again and again knowing that what I've got now is what I'll have at the end of it.' In this engaging icebreaker with Karl Hinett, the discussion centres around a H-Hour patron Q&A held before the London Marathon. The episode dives into deep questions on politics, military life, and personal experiences. Karl reflects on his entry into the military, the moral complexities of war, and the impact it has had on his life and outlook. He argues that his time in the military has given him resilience, a positive frame of mind, and a unique set of skills that aid in problem-solving and personal growth. He also discusses how his severe injuries led to self-improvement, emphasising the value of time and community support. The session closes with plans to explore Karl's journey as a motivational speaker and endurance athlete in the forthcoming podcast. Karl Hinett is a British military veteran and adventurer who has raised significant funds through various challenges. He served in the Staffordshire Regiment and was severely injured during a petrol bomb attack in Iraq in 2005, suffering 37% burns to his face, hands, arms, legs, and stomach. Following his injuries, he underwent 16 operations over five years to recover. Since 2005, he has participated in numerous marathons and ultra-marathons, including running a total of 100 marathons in 2011 and 2012. In March 2025, he and other veterans raised £90,000 through an Arctic challenge, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and friendship. Karl is also a motivational speaker and a member of the CASEVAC Club, an organization for military veterans.

The full marathon is almost 80 per cent sold, so sign up today at sunshinecoastmarathon.com.au to secure your spot at the start line. Malcolm takes it back to the beginnings at schoolyard rivalries in Albury, starting at sprints and winning the 800m, and how his love of running helped channel his hyperactivity. The first half of this interview concludes with how he joined Nike in the early 80s through Raylene Boyle and heading to AIS under pressure, not knowing who Pat Clohessy was and setting the record for the longest suspension at the AIS. Brady's chat with Malcolm Norwood resumes starting from his suspension from the AIS leading to a 3rd place in the State 10k and then taking a break from the sport, then coming back to racing in Europe under the mentorship of Ron Clarke and dealing with emotions. Mal then talks about coming home and running the 3-day Otway Classic, recounting the process for picking the team, employing tactics and strategy and duelling Sean Quilty. With his career transitioning from track to road, Mal talks about running the London Marathon to supplement his Twin Cities performance to qualify for the Barcelona Olympics and the complicated selection process involved as well as an incident that happened just before the London Marathon before going into the lasting impact of the injury through the Tokyo Marathon, World Championships in Germany to his final marathon at Gold Coast and how his retirement came about. What if injuries aren't inevitable, but predictable events with upstream warning signs we can actually address? Henry Abbott, award-winning journalist and founder of True Hoop, joins us to discuss his groundbreaking book "Ballistic: The New Science of Injury-Free Athletic Performance" that challenges everything we thought we knew about athletic durability.Abbott shares fascinating insights from his research at P3 (Peak Performance Project), where cutting-edge biomechanics analysis is revolutionizing how athletes train. Most surprisingly, he reveals how mental limitations often precede physical ones. Through a remarkable personal anecdote about holding his breath for over four minutes after minimal instruction, Abbott demonstrates how our brains frequently create barriers our bodies haven't actually reached. For runners specifically, Abbott provides practical wisdom on proper landing mechanics, identifying injury risk factors, and strengthening the often-neglected muscles beneath the knee that create efficient "bouncy" movement. Rather than obsessing over form while running, he suggests building capability through targeted training, then allowing your body to naturally implement improvements. In the Race Report Spotlight, we hear from 11 runners across four countries who completed the London Marathon. They share their experiences with punishing heat and incredible crowd support. They also describe the emotional highs of crossing Tower Bridge and finishing near Buckingham Palace. Their stories capture both the challenge and the magic of completing a World Major Marathon. Whether you're battling recurring injuries, seeking performance improvements, or simply wanting to run with less pain, this episode offers invaluable insights that might just transform your relationship with running. This week's show brought to you by: MAS Iron Outside of training deficiencies, low iron is one of the most common reasons for poor results during workouts and races.  Recent research indicates that almost 56% of male runners and 86% of female runners suffer from an iron deficiency that severely hampers performance. The problem with eating iron-rich foods or supplementing with traditional iron supplements is that iron is notoriously difficult for the body to absorb and utilize. In fact, only about 25% of dietary iron found in animal sources is absorbed while 17% or less of the iron from plant sources is absorbed. But MAS Iron has found a way to combat these absorption issues to ensure you can get the iron you need for health and performance. By combining the most efficiently absorbed form of elemental iron with clinically proven ingredients to aid in absorption, MAS Iron performs like no other iron product on the market. In fact, clinical research has shown the combination of ingredients in MAS Iron can quadruple absorption and increase bioavailability by 30%, all while reducing GI issues by 50%. Dr. Michelle Quirk, pediatrician and running coach, sets the record straight in this episode, sharing why walk intervals are not only acceptable but beneficial for all runners. Her thoughtful advice for beginners—remember your "why," start slow, and focus on effort rather than pace—offers a refreshing foundation for anyone lacing up for the first time. The conversation with Dr. Quirk delves into practical wisdom that both novice and experienced runners will appreciate. She explains how to distinguish between normal muscle soreness and potential injuries through timing, location, and relieving factors—information that could save you from sidelining yourself unnecessarily or pushing through a genuine problem. For parents, Michelle offers sage advice on introducing children to running in a healthy, sustainable way that keeps the focus on fun rather than competition.Following our expert interview, we're treated to emotional firsthand accounts from three Boston Marathon finishers, including two who completed their Six Star journey at this iconic race.
